Welcome back to our vintage cinema archive, your premier online destination for high-quality restorations of golden age Hollywood, rare international adventures, and essential literary landmarks. Today, we step into the grand coliseums of ancient Rome for a wonderfully witty, charmingly satiric take on history: the 1952 RKO masterpiece, Androcles and the Lion.

Produced by Howard Hughes and based on the celebrated stage play by George Bernard Shaw, this unique historical feature stars Alan Young as Androcles, a gentle, animal-loving Christian tailor fleeing Roman persecution. While hiding out in the deep woods, Androcles crosses paths with a wild lion roaring in agony from a massive thorn embedded in its paw. Rather than running, the brave tailor helps the beast, forging an unbreakable, magical bond of friendship before they are separated. Soon after, Androcles and a group of fellow believers—including the beautiful, unyielding noblewoman Lavinia (Jean Simmons) and the physically imposing, hot-tempered warrior Ferrovius (Robert Newton)—are captured by imperial forces. As they are marched toward the capital under the watchful eye of a sympathetic Roman captain (Victor Mature), they face a grim ultimate fate: to be thrown to the wild beasts in the Colosseum for the amusement of the eccentric Emperor Caesar (Maurice Evans). However, when Androcles is selected to step into the arena to face a ferocious, starving lion, the spectacular reunion that follows completely turns the imperial games upside down, sparking a joyous, chaotic spectacle that shocks the entire Roman court.

Boasting sharp, intellectual dialogue, elegant mid-century production design, and a wonderful musical score by Frederick Hollander, Androcles and the Lion balances historical scale with genuine theatrical humor.
