Welcome back to our vintage cinema archive, your premier online destination for premium restorations of golden age international cinema and essential art-house landmarks. Today, we invite you to experience the explosive, feverish energy of one of the most legendary and volatile creative partnerships in film history: the 1987 historical epic, Cobra Verde.
Directed with an uncompromising eye for scale by the visionary Werner Herzog and starring the intensely mercurial Klaus Kinski, this profound drama serves as the fifth and final collaboration between the iconic director and actor. Based on Bruce Chatwin's celebrated historical novel The Viceroy of Ouidah, the narrative follows Francisco Manoel da Silva (Kinski), a debauched, hot-tempered Brazilian bandit who loses everything to a devastating drought. Stripped of his land, he transforms into a ruthless slave trader, earning the feared moniker "Cobra Verde." Desperate to rid themselves of his volatile presence, a group of wealthy sugar barons trick Da Silva into accepting a suicidal mission to West Africa to re-open a long-abandoned slave trade outpost. Against all mathematical odds, Da Silva navigates the complex, treacherous political landscape of the Kingdom of Dahomey. He eventually overthrows the local mad king by training an immense, fiercely loyal army of native women warriors, declaring himself the Viceroy. However, as the global political tides turn and the abolition of the slave trade looms, his newly built empire begins to fracture, driving him into a desperate, isolated descent into madness on the African coast.
Boasting hypnotic, expansive widescreen cinematography, a raw historical atmosphere, and a hauntingly beautiful choral score by regular Herzog collaborators Popol Vuh, Cobra Verde is a demanding, visually spectacular examination of human ambition. Our channel is fiercely dedicated to preserving historic film treasures, offering a curated library of international art-house masterpieces, rare B-movies, vintage action epics, and gritty film noir thrillers.
