Welcome back to our vintage cinema archive, your ultimate digital space for premium restorations of golden age Hollywood, rare B-movies, and essential British comedy classics. Today, we step back onto the marble floors of the ancient world for the undisputed crown jewel of British cinematic satire: the brilliant 1964 historical spoof, Carry on Cleo.

Masterfully directed by Gerald Thomas, this hilarious feature acts as a direct, lavishly staged parody of Hollywood's big-budget Roman epics. The chaotic story kicks off in ancient Britain, where two mismatched locals—Hengist Pod (Kenneth Connor), a cowardly square-wheel inventor, and Horsa (Jim Dale), a brave warrior—are captured by invading Roman forces led by Marcus Antonius (Sid James). Transported to Rome as slaves, a bizarre series of temple accidents leads to Hengist being mistakenly hailed as a lethal, elite fighter. Through a stroke of sheer luck, he is appointed as the personal bodyguard to the famously paranoid Julius Caesar (Kenneth Williams), who is constantly trying to dodge backstabbing assassins. The political intrigue deepens when Caesar dispatches Mark Antony to Egypt to depose the enchanting Queen Cleopatra (Amanda Barrie) and install a puppet ruler. Instead, Antony falls completely under her spell, plotting a treacherous coup against Caesar. Caught right in the middle of this imperial power struggle, the bumbling Hengist must somehow fake his way through palace revolutions, gladiator arenas, and naval battles to survive.

Utilizing the actual, discarded sets and costumes from Hollywood's Cleopatra, the film boasts an unusually rich visual style alongside Eric Rogers' wonderfully jaunty orchestral score. Our channel is proudly dedicated to preserving historic film treasures, offering a curated library of vintage comedy features, rare international adventures, gritty film noir thrillers, and retro horror.
