00:00One, one day away from the Knicks playing to clinch their first championship since 1973.
00:08And the biggest party New York City will ever see.
00:13Knicks gotta make OG and Game 4 stick.
00:18Shine Time starts right now.
00:20It's gonna stop.
00:22It's gonna come in, baby.
00:24Don't stop.
00:26The mentality has to be 0-0. The way it's been, there's, it has to be that way.
00:33And I feel like us moving forward with that mindset can really benefit us.
00:38But it just, there's nothing, there's nothing to celebrate because it's not over yet.
00:44Not even close.
00:47Wow. One day away. One win away.
00:50That's the right mentality from the captain.
00:52They haven't won anything yet.
00:55But my New York Knicks, your New York Knicks, our New York Knicks, have the chance to finally end their
01:0253-year NBA championship drought tomorrow night on the road in San Antonio.
01:09But that's not the only droughts on the verge of being broken.
01:14Do you realize it has been 5,241 days since New York last won a championship in the Big Four?
01:26Yes, the Liberty did win a title, of course.
01:29We were there for it in 2024.
01:31But when it comes to the NBA, NFL, Major League Baseball, National Hockey League,
01:37it has been this long since the Giants won the Super Bowl February 12, 2012.
01:45My goodness.
01:46But I want to stress it, just like Jalen Brunson did to start the show, this thing is not over
01:52yet.
01:53And I want you to keep in mind, according to our good friends over at DraftKings,
01:56the Spurs are favored tomorrow night by five and a half points.
02:05Knicks' money line bet plus money tomorrow night at plus 164.
02:13And I get it, right?
02:14Because when you look at it, the San Antonio Spurs have outplayed New York in terms of vast majority of
02:23game minutes
02:24during the course of these NBA Finals.
02:26The Spurs have had the lead in all four games in the final two minutes at some point.
02:32The Spurs had a lead of 29 points in game number four.
02:37We all know what transpired.
02:39And my goodness, this finish was one for the ages.
02:43I've seen it a million times.
02:46Every time I watch it, I can't get enough.
02:48Watch OG fly through the air.
02:51And I love how we start with the block and OG and De'Aaron Fox losing his mind.
02:55And I can't stress this enough about the moment.
03:00Brunson missed the shot.
03:01That's not in the cards.
03:03And look at this angle, right?
03:05The improbability, the athleticism, the poise, the intelligence.
03:11That is as majestic a play as you will ever see in the history of sports.
03:19What it takes to execute something like that on the highest level, it's, as Mike Brown said after the game,
03:26that is the signature moment without question of the NBA Finals.
03:31Now, again, Knicks have to win for this all to stick.
03:35And one of the reasons why Knicks fans are so confident, it's because of Jalen Brunson.
03:41You saw that clip to start the show.
03:43They haven't won anything yet.
03:45Now, we as fans can start getting hyped.
03:47We can get amped.
03:49We can start daydreaming.
03:51I think it's healthy to start talking about, hey, this is what it would feel like.
03:55This is what it would look like.
03:57And we got a great glimpse of that when you saw the pure joy and jubilation and celebration.
04:02And listen, Jalen Brunson has been terrific in terms of being vintage Brunson during the course of these NBA Finals,
04:11right?
04:11And that means the Brunson burner and being great when it matters the most.
04:15And he pumped in a ton of points when you look at it down the stretch.
04:20Jalen Brunson's first quarter in game four was terrible.
04:23Jalen Brunson has been, you know, vintage Brunson when it matters the most.
04:28I think that Jalen Brunson can play even better.
04:33We haven't seen that vintage Jalen Brunson game quite yet when you look at it here from the best player
04:42on the Knicks.
04:43I think the Knicks have to get off to a hot start.
04:45I think that is paramount in every possible way.
04:49And I think that you're going to see the Knicks make what happened at the end of game four stick.
04:55Because I understand why the Spurs are relatively heavy favorites to win on Saturday night.
05:02Like, I'm not offended by that.
05:04That's not bulletin board material.
05:06I mean, I disagree with Mitch Johnson saying that all these results have been induced by the Spurs,
05:11not giving the Knicks credit.
05:12I mean, you know, Mitch Johnson, Mitch, please, he's coached a horrendous NBA Finals.
05:18I mean, game two was terrible.
05:19Game four was terrible in every possible way.
05:23The Aaron Fox has been mind-numbingly awful.
05:26All those sloppy mistakes and bad ball and dribbling off of his feet.
05:31And, you know, obviously what transpired with the Aaron Fox late.
05:34And even trying for that layup where he needed to bring it out and control the clock.
05:39And the clock and the score is your friend.
05:41And then OG with the block.
05:42And then everything that transpires.
05:44We all know how bad that was in terms of basketball.
05:47And this, to me, all relates.
05:50It's not just, well, you guys in New York can't get over game four.
05:54No, game four is historic, not only in terms of a comeback, but a collapse.
06:01And when you're going back to San Antonio, and the Knicks have won two games in San Antonio,
06:06the vibes matter.
06:07The energy from game four on the court, after the game, the celebration, the ultra shock and
06:14awe and jubilation, that all matters here when you look at it from game four to game five.
06:21Which is why it's paramount to me that the Knicks have to get off to a good start to make
06:26a stick.
06:26And the Knicks have been awful this series in terms of good starts.
06:31Let's be clear about it.
06:32Which is why, to me, in so many ways, it comes back to Karl-Anthony Towns.
06:36And Karl-Anthony Towns was so great in game four in the fourth quarter.
06:41And you almost have to jog the mental Rolodex when you start talking about ebb and flow of
06:45this series.
06:46Game one, game two, and it feels like a lifetime ago, and Karl-Anthony Towns was the best player
06:52on the floor for either team.
06:53Game one, game two.
06:54And when you look at what Cat was able to do in game number four in the fourth quarter,
06:59and the fact that he didn't go into a ball after those two early fouls, and, you know,
07:04listen, when Wemby elbowed him in the face and got that flagrant foul, I think that hyped
07:09him up without question.
07:10Now, the foul trouble was awful.
07:12Foul trouble was problematic.
07:14Obviously, he should have never been, at the end of the day, overturned.
07:18You know, and the fact that Wemby got that call was just, in the sports context, it was
07:23tragic, right?
07:23I mean, just as bad as it gets.
07:25But Cat stayed with it.
07:27And Cat was able to get a double-double.
07:30And Karl-Anthony Towns' fourth quarter was remarkable.
07:34Inside, outside, and then, obviously, this at the end, and getting that hand on the ball
07:41and making sure that the ultra-clutch, Stephon Castle, that play was drawn up for him,
07:46the fact that he was never able to get it in time and couldn't field it cleanly,
07:50that counts when you start talking about Karl-Anthony Towns and what he's able to do when it matters
07:56the most.
07:57I'll also be curious, from a game perspective, and listen, I think Cat is a huge key.
08:02Mikkel Bridges has to play much better and be a factor and be the game two version of Mikkel
08:08Bridges than what we saw, obviously, in game number four.
08:11Listen, Jose Alvarado was breathtaking and brilliant.
08:13I don't think you bank on that again.
08:15I'll be curious to see De'Aaron Fox, and we reference, obviously, the slop and, you know,
08:20the stupidity, how that ultimately, at the end of the day, Fox versus Harper in those minutes,
08:26how that's juxtaposed here when you look at it from a Mitch Johnson perspective.
08:31Because, you know, I know they all like De'Aaron Fox and Mitch Johnson likes him.
08:35You can't mess around and find out with De'Aaron Fox.
08:39And Dylan Harper, man, this cat is special.
08:42I mean, he's unbelievable.
08:44And watching him play and do his thing, it is incredible to watch.
08:48And Harper has such range and such touch.
08:51And, you know, he's so tough.
08:52And he's a great ball handler.
08:54And he's a great defender.
08:55And I know it says rookie on the back of the bubblegum card.
08:59I, he has the, and it's, you know, his dad played in the NBA and won championship after
09:03championship.
09:04This guy has the moxie of a 10-year vet.
09:08It's amazing to watch.
09:09So, look, it's so incumbent on the Knicks to make sure in the early stages of game five
09:17on Saturday night that game four sticks.
09:19Because the Spurs, they are, and I mean this as a compliment to San Antonio, they're delusional.
09:26And I mean that in a good way because they just don't even understand what's going on.
09:32They're young.
09:33They're cocky.
09:34They're arrogant.
09:36They're unlikable.
09:37And they also came back.
09:39And I want to stress this here from a Knicks perspective.
09:42The Spurs just came back against the defending champs, down 3-2 in one game six and one game
09:49seven.
09:50So, listen, it's only plus 360 right now to bet the Spurs to win a championship.
09:57Only once in NBA history.
09:58That, of course, Cleveland against the Golden State Warriors.
10:01Have we seen a team down 3-1 come back and win?
10:04Spurs are a terrific team.
10:07Knicks are better.
10:08Spurs have terrific talent.
10:10The Knicks are the ultimate team.
10:12So, we're one day away.
10:15One game away.
10:17One win away.
10:19And because of Jalen Brunson and how we started the show and that mindset and that mentality,
10:24I have so much trust in New York to be able to handle the weights and the angst of a
10:32city
10:33and a fan base and what that would look like.
10:36Because the players all got a glimpse, right?
10:38Game four felt like you were celebrating a championship.
10:43You celebrated an unbelievable moment in time.
10:46The players and Jalen Brunson understand that.
10:49Now, I think it's so important.
10:51Like the Knicks have done in prior series against inferior teams comparing Contrast to San Antonio.
10:57Let's be clear.
10:57But deliver that knockout punch Mike Tyson-esque early.
11:02That is everything to me for game number five on Saturday nights.
11:06And as the Knicks move closer to capturing this title, debate has begun on the finals MVP at this point.
11:12One reporter had a very interesting question for Jalen Brunson and how important it is for him to win the
11:18MVP.
11:20Your coach said you are the MVP candidate.
11:23So which one is most important for you?
11:26Championship, being MVP, or peaceful celebration and peace entire world?
11:32Or all of them?
11:41The most important thing for me is just over these next 48 hours, just focusing on what we've got to
11:48do to win game five.
11:51You've got to love a great Q&A like that.
11:53So Jalen Brunson is not worried today about MVP or a championship or world peace or what coffee he's going
12:02to order when he goes to Cherry Lawn, his favorite place in Westchester.
12:06And I had a Cherry Lawn coffee in honor of our guy Jalen Brunson today.
12:10And by the way, their Caesar wrap, fantastic.
12:13The turkey wrap, unbelievable.
12:15But the tuna, that is next level fantastic.
12:18Jalen Brunson is currently the favorite right now as we speak when it comes to the finals MVP.
12:25And it goes noted that that's where it is if you go to draft kicks.
12:30To me, the finals MVP, when I look at it, is OG and Anobi.
12:37And if I had a vote today, OG would be the guy.
12:42And I think that if you start talking about a feel of the team and the play and the points
12:47per game and things that matter, OG and Anobi absolutely, right now, today on Friday, would be the finals MVP.
12:57And I love the way we phrased the question because that's how it needs to be framed, right?
13:02OG and Anobi has the greatest moments in NBA Finals history.
13:08Not only that, but it was the moments beforehand.
13:11And take a look at the final stats, right?
13:14And I think this is kind of important here.
13:17Look at OG and the points per game.
13:19Look at the difference in the field goal percentage.
13:23And Anobi is just bombs away right now when it comes to the three-point percentage.
13:28Rebounds, I mean, Brunson's been amazing in terms of, you know, crashing the boards from the guard position.
13:34OG obviously is superb on defense.
13:38Brunson's points per game, they are more.
13:41I also want to stress this when it comes to Jalen Brunson.
13:45I think this is important here when it comes to the topics for conversation, right?
13:51Jalen Brunson, let's say the series ended today.
13:55We still have to play a game five.
13:57And I'll tell you exactly how I think this is going to go for the MVP in a second.
14:01If Jalen Brunson won the MVP after four games, let's say the NBA said,
14:05you know what, that was too good after Wednesday night.
14:08We're going to cancel the rest of the postseason.
14:11Finals are over.
14:12We're going to give the Larry O'Brien trophy to the Knicks.
14:15And the rest of the NBA Finals are canceled.
14:18If they gave it to Brunson, I wouldn't agree with it.
14:22The answer to the question is OG and Anobi.
14:25But you can never go nuts whenever it's Brunson.
14:30This is not one of those.
14:32And you'll find out who the frauds are in terms of the sports media and the internet tough guys.
14:37And, you know, the people who just want to say, hey, look at me with an opinion.
14:42Jalen Brunson is always the heartbeat and heart and soul and best player and the MVP of the Knicks.
14:47Now, he might not be the MVP of the finals, but he's always the MVP of the Knicks.
14:55And it's not like he's having a bad finals.
14:59We just showed you the stats.
15:01Jalen Brunson was the reason why the Knicks won in game number one, the vintage Brunson burner.
15:08So you can make a case today for Brunson.
15:12I would go with Anobi.
15:14There's also a historical conversation, and it goes back to Steph Curry and Andre Iguodala in terms of the MVP
15:24and how something will be viewed historically.
15:30And that doesn't mean you just give it to Jalen Brunson because he's Jalen Brunson.
15:35But I think that if it's even, and a sports reporter who votes, votes for Jalen Brunson for the MVP,
15:43great.
15:44That's fine.
15:45It's not one of those when you start yelling.
15:47I will say this for the sake of conversation.
15:50Karl-Anthony Towns was the MVP after the first two games.
15:53So, and I'm not suggesting that Cat is even in the mix now, but I expect Karl-Anthony Towns to
16:00be the most dominant player on the floor for New York in game number five.
16:05I mean, there is a correlation when you look at the Knicks winning, the Knicks all-time heater, the Knicks
16:1013-game winning streak, the Knicks winning 14 of the last 15 games in the postseason,
16:15and Karl-Anthony Towns, the offense has gone through him.
16:19So, I could see Cat being the MVP of game five.
16:25And then, if that's the case, we'll see if the Knicks win, and they win a championship, how Brunson and
16:31Ananobi ultimately play with that as a backdrop.
16:35So, this is a great topic for discussion.
16:37It's obviously one where I think that OG's the guy after four.
16:42I do think that Brunson is always, always the answer when it comes to MVP for anything and everything when
16:49it comes to the Knicks.
16:50And the fact that we're having this conversation about this basketball team right here, right now, it's great for your
16:57sports soul.
16:57Victor Wimbanyama, who entered these finals, already larger than life, literally and figuratively, has become quite a lightning rod for
17:05both his play and his transgressions throughout the series.
17:08After his flagrant foul against Karl-Anthony Towns in game number four, he is now one flagrant foul away from
17:16an automatic suspension.
17:18But will he adjust going forward?
17:23Here's what's interesting when you take a look at Victor Wimbanyama.
17:27He has been the ultimate villain.
17:30He has been a bit of a thug.
17:33He has been dirty.
17:35He has been unlikable.
17:37And when you ultimately are Victor Wimbanyama, and you act like this, it's going to destroy your reputation.
17:47Now, I don't have amnesia.
17:51We've talked on this show about Victor Wimbanyama being the face of the league because, and I want to stay
17:57very consistent here, he's a freak.
17:59He's an alien.
18:00He does things on the court that have never been done before.
18:02He's got a Wilt Chamberlain meets Steph Curry meets E.T. kind of approach to his game.
18:09And what he did in game six and game seven of the conference finals against the champs, that was next
18:15level.
18:16Next sentence.
18:17He's been atrocious on offense during these NBA finals.
18:22Game one on offense was a mess.
18:25In a word, he was terrible.
18:27Game two, last Friday night, first half, he was deplorable.
18:31Shaq and Chuck almost came to blows, if you remember, at halftime over Victor Wimbanyama's game and his effort.
18:37When you look at what happened in the first half, he responded with a much better second half until the
18:43final minute where he missed two jumpers, including a potential game winner.
18:48He also had a gross turnover and an inexplicable foul.
18:52He failed, humiliated himself.
18:55Big time.
18:56Big time players don't do that in this kind of spot.
19:00Game three was great.
19:04Game four on offense was deplorable, and I want to make sure that word is on record.
19:11So when you look at Victor Wimbanyama, what he did in the second half, where he was, what, three of
19:1614 shooting, that was atrocious.
19:19When he missed two monster free throws, that was atrocious.
19:24I mean, look at the score, just in case you need to jog the mental Rolodex.
19:28It is a one-point game.
19:31He missed two free throws.
19:33The Spurs lost by a point.
19:36You do the math.
19:38It's as simple as that.
19:39I was never a good math student.
19:41Took one math class at Syracuse.
19:44That was my sophomore year.
19:45Probability and statistics.
19:47I got a B-.
19:48I still, when I go to dinner with my wife, I have to carry the one physically, write it out.
19:54When I leave a tip, I can't do math.
19:57That is a rough one for Victor Wimbanyama.
20:01Plus, his arrogance, at the end of the day, is a turnoff, in addition to his on-court violence.
20:08In addition to the perception, the reality that he gets away with on-court murder, where
20:15he can throw Jalen Brunson across the court, they don't even call a foul.
20:20Let alone, forget flagrant foul.
20:22Game three, they don't even call a foul.
20:25So, yes, in terms of reputation, absolutely positively a disgrace when you look at Victor
20:34Wimbanyama, and he's got—I am not writing him off in any way, shape, or form.
20:41I am not writing off his career.
20:43I am not writing him off for game five.
20:46He could pump in 45 and 20, and I wouldn't bat an eye.
20:49That's what you expect.
20:50But in terms of face of the NBA, in terms of likability, I know how clutch and tough he
20:57was in the Western Conference Finals.
20:59He was great in game three.
20:59But he has been bad and un-clutch on offense for the vast majority of this series.
21:07And in a superstar league, we get on stars in a five-on-five game all the time.
21:12You can blame Mitch Johnson.
21:13You can blame De'Aaron Fox until the cows come home.
21:16The number one person to blame for the San Antonio Spurs is Victor Wimbanyama.
21:23My guest today has been the lead sports columnist for the New York Post since 2002.
21:28He's seen this city and this Knicks team through all the ups and the downs.
21:33He's a best-selling author.
21:34He's here to share his thoughts on the Knicks and this title run and the state of the city.
21:39Welcome to Shine Time, our friend, the great Mike Vaccaro.
21:42Mike, how are you?
21:44Adam, I'm doing great.
21:45How are you today?
21:46I'm amazing, my friend.
21:48And listen, your piece in the Post on Friday was unbelievable.
21:53And we never need an excuse to have you on, but it motivated us.
21:57We all said we need Mike Vaccaro on Shine Time today because you've covered every single sporting event in New
22:03York sports that's mattered since you've been with the New York Post.
22:07So first and foremost, describe the sights, the sounds, the historical perspective of Game 4.
22:16What I found remarkable is that even when they cut it to like 22 or 20, I mean, the garden
22:23was still over-the-top energized, which is amazing.
22:27They were quiet in the first half, but, you know, just any sign of life in the second half, and
22:32all of a sudden the garden was the garden again.
22:34And look, I'm not someone who ascribes all the magic of what a team does to the support they receive
22:40from the people in the building.
22:41Knicks have lost a lot of their games at home too.
22:43So it's not always an automatic, but I was stunned by just how engaged the crowd was, even when things
22:49still look pretty hopeless.
22:50You know, I rewatched the game, you forget they were still down 20 with less than 10 minutes to go.
22:57It's remarkable, and it's not supposed to happen.
22:59But even just every little bit, I mean, get to 17, get to 15, they couldn't get past 15 for
23:05a while, but the crowd was still into it.
23:07And, you know, that has to help.
23:10And it obviously freaked the Spurs out a little bit.
23:13Josh Hart missing the layup almost cost us about 10 notable names because they all seem to pass out on
23:18Celebrity Row.
23:20But, you know, it was just one of those nights beyond belief.
23:23And then the final buzzer is just the sheer glee of it.
23:27You know, it wasn't just joy.
23:28I think glee is beyond joy, right?
23:30And that's what it really was like.
23:32I mean, the relief, the happiness, you don't get those kind of moments in sports an awful lot.
23:39Yeah, I mean, it's amazing.
23:41I had the chills twice during that answer.
23:43And the way you said relief and glee, it's true.
23:46And you're 100% right.
23:48And you even referenced some of the scores and the time in that fourth quarter.
23:53Mike, I guess this is the beauty for me.
23:55I didn't really think it was possible until the very end, maybe when they cut it to single digits.
24:04How does this team keep doing it?
24:06I give Mike Brown so much credit.
24:08I give Jalen Brunson so much credit.
24:10The togetherness, the chemistry, the likability.
24:14Leon Rose gets so much credit.
24:16How does this team keep doing it in this kind of fashion?
24:20Well, look, they're used to it by now, I guess.
24:22It's the fifth time in two years in the playoffs they've done it.
24:26But, look, I think, you know, one of the things, let's go back to that famous timeout when Cat was
24:31exhorting his teammates in game, I think it was game one, maybe it was game two.
24:34And he said, look, our offense stinks right now, but just play defense and our offense will catch up.
24:39It always catches up.
24:40And he referenced game one against the Cavaliers.
24:42And, look, I thought that was, like, mathematically the outer limits of what a team could do.
24:4722 points down, seven and a half to go.
24:50And I think it was around, you know, seven and a half minutes ago, it was still, like, 15 or
24:5516.
24:56So, in that context, it didn't seem impossible.
24:59And, look, once, you know, once you get there, that's why that Josh Hart layup was such a kick in
25:04the gut for a second.
25:05You're like, oh, wait, that was the moment.
25:07And you wonder if you're ever going to get it back.
25:09And then, you know, very specific to the Garden's wants and needs that day, what happens next?
25:14When Bayama blows two free throws.
25:16And so, you just add that on top of everybody else.
25:19And all of a sudden, you're like, well, something good's got to happen.
25:21And then, of course, the OG play happens.
25:23And you're like, wow.
25:24I mean, then what else can you say?
25:26You know, there was, like, this moment of, like, pausing after Jalen shot the ball.
25:32And it was kind of obvious it wasn't going in.
25:33So, it was like this, oh.
25:35But then, all of a sudden, here comes an OG flying.
25:37And it goes through the basket.
25:38And it was, like, maybe a quarter of a millisecond that before anybody reacted
25:43because they couldn't believe it, and then, all of a sudden, it was bedlam.
25:45And, you know, that's why you go to the games.
25:48That's why you spent $3 million for a ticket.
25:52And it's why you love sports.
25:54And I love the way you phrased that because I think, and I'm going to make this case,
25:59and I read your piece in the Post, which I encourage everyone to read,
26:02and I thought it was amazing.
26:04And I don't want to be subject to hyperbole here.
26:06But let's start with my lifetime, right?
26:09Last 50 years in New York sports.
26:12I think this play is the most iconic signature moment in New York sports over the last 50 years
26:19because of the improbability of it, the comeback.
26:23Now, I even reference, and you reference it too, Brunson missed the shot.
26:28Like, I can't express that enough when I talk about OG and compare it to other moments.
26:34The script said Brunson makes the three, and that's how the Knicks win.
26:38He missed.
26:39OG goes from inbounding the ball to tipping it in.
26:43I also found myself with that mental juxtaposition of how many finger rolls have been missed.
26:50Patrick Ewing, Charles Smith.
26:52We can, like, that all to me matters when I make a comment like that.
26:56I'm not ruling out David Tyree.
26:59Also, obviously, that wasn't a game winner, as amazing as that was.
27:04In moment, and the curse was still around, they didn't win a World Series, but Aaron Boone,
27:10that to me was something.
27:12Jim Lairitz, obviously, you know, in 96, that was a monster deal.
27:17But this was in Manhattan, and if the Knicks win, and this was the biggest comeback in
27:23NBA Finals history, this is the moment of the last 50 years.
27:29What's your take?
27:30Well, look, I think you hit on something really good there, Adam.
27:34I mean, it was in Manhattan.
27:35You know, we're all products of New York, greater New York, and some of us are from East,
27:39and some of us are from West, and we've always looked, I think, at Manhattan as the Holy Grail,
27:44all right, so when stuff happens there, it just matters more, you know, and I think
27:49that's a large part of it.
27:50It was in the heart of the city, a joyous moment in the heart of the city, and you're
27:56right, it won the game.
27:57And look, you know, all due respect to Carl Anthony Towns, who a couple minutes later
28:01would get a fingertip on the inbounds pass, and, you know, if he hadn't done that, we
28:06might be having different conversations today.
28:08But in that moment, it was remarkable.
28:10I mean, right, you listed all these great moments.
28:12You listed, you know, the Andy Chavez catch and the Tyree catch and all these, the flip
28:19play.
28:19But this game, this was a game-winning shot, and it was a comeback, and that's why, I
28:23mean, to me, the only other thing that comes close is game six and 86 for the Mets.
28:27Because they were two outs, nobody on, down two runs, about to have their season over,
28:32they would soon have, like, 13 pitches where just a swing and a miss would end the season,
28:38and they didn't.
28:38They won that game.
28:39They didn't clinch that night either.
28:40They still had to win game seven, and obviously the Knicks will have to win their fourth game
28:45in the series.
28:45But it's just such a, you know, people always, you know, I remember the great Dave Anderson,
28:51my mentor in this business, would always say one of the great things about going to the
28:54games is, you know, every now and again, you get something you never saw before.
28:57I never saw that before, you know, and I never heard that before.
29:01And, you know, it was funny, all these people didn't want to go home, and I understood it.
29:06Nobody wanted to let go of the night at all.
29:08No one wanted to, you know, miss their subway, there are other trains.
29:12You know, you miss your car service, they'll call another one.
29:14You know, I mean, at that point, you just don't care.
29:17I'm going to be late for work tomorrow, my boss will understand, because he's probably
29:19going to be late tomorrow too.
29:20I mean, it's one of those moments.
29:22It didn't, once you left the garden that night, it was going to be over, and nobody wanted
29:25it to be over before it had to be.
29:27And, you know, good for the ushers, who kind of understood that.
29:30I think they were kind of wrapped up in the moment too, and understood, you know what,
29:33let's let this linger for a while.
29:35All this is, is pure happiness, and how few times do we get something like that?
29:40A hundred percent.
29:41And I want you to hit home what this championship would mean to this city.
29:45And, you know, again, the Knicks play in Manhattan, and, you know, I still think in a lot
29:50of ways, at its core, and still, New York is a baseball town, and I've always argued
29:56that, and believe that, and NFL has taken over everywhere, every city, no question about
30:02that, and Giants fans are great, and Jets fans are great, and Mets and Yankees, and Rangers
30:08fans are unbelievable.
30:10I just think it's a little different, and it's also been long-suffering, and there are
30:15people my age, my generation, who have literally never seen a championship.
30:21What would a championship mean to New York?
30:25Well, look, I mean, the sport matters so much to the city.
30:28I think people misinterpret it.
30:30When we talk about the city game, obviously, we're not talking about the massive amounts
30:34of success the Knicks have had.
30:36You know, they've won two championships in 80 years.
30:38We're not even talking about the massive amount of success St. John's has had.
30:41Nice little program, but the two Final Fours.
30:43I mean, we're talking about the sport, and the grassroots nature of where the sport was
30:48created, the playgrounds, the gyms, the gyms with 11-foot ceilings and 10-foot baskets,
30:53you know, all that stuff that's inherent to New York, and the sport matters to us, and so
30:58therefore, you know, and the Knicks matter in a way that other teams in this market don't.
31:02Look, they're the only team that really has the dominant market share.
31:05You know, if the Yankees are going to play the Astros and the ALCS, you know, half the
31:11city wants the Yankees to lose, right?
31:13Right, right.
31:14When the Jets are playing the Dolphins, half the city wants the Jets to lose.
31:18I mean, that's just the way it is.
31:20That's not the case with New York.
31:22I mean, look, I mean, I have a lot of friends who are Nets fans, but even they all can
31:26see,
31:26look, it's lonely being a Nets fan because the Knicks have been established.
31:31I think the Nets had their own niche when they played on Long Island, when they played in New
31:35Jersey, it's hard when you're playing in Brooklyn because there's no greater capital of Knicks
31:39basketball than Brooklyn, New York, and so that's what they're going up against, and
31:43so I don't want to say it's a unifying element because there are Nets fans, and they're certainly
31:47going to stand pat and say, well, we certainly don't want them to win the championship, but
31:51it's a smaller amount, and because of that, you know, you just don't see, like you have
31:56lately, where everywhere you go, there's a Knicks jacket, there's a Knicks hat, there's
32:01a Knicks t-shirt, and usually when you're around the Garden and you see people in Knicks
32:04regalia, you're like, well, you're going to the game tonight, and of course, there's
32:08no way that 80,000 people the other day were going to the game, but they were all wearing
32:12their orange and blue because that's what you do.
32:14You know, a friend of mine, Chuck Culpepper, a great writer at ESPN now, who said one time
32:19that New York is Tuscaloosa with a skyline.
32:22That's a great life.
32:24You know, we're a hard-bitten town, big city town, we don't pluffer fools, but you know
32:29what, when our teams give us reason to cheer, man, we cheer loudly, and that's what this reminds
32:34me of.
32:35All right, prediction time, because, you know, I think it's fair to say the Spurs
32:39have, in so many ways, Mike, just on the minutes for the actual games, outplayed the Knicks
32:46for the vast majority of the finals, even with the Knicks leading 3-1, and we're a day
32:51away, game away, win away from a championship.
32:53You know, the Knicks should obviously win in San Antonio.
32:56They've done it twice during these finals, and they have great matchups, and I'm not going
33:00to be the one who doubts the New York Knicks, but I'm sure San Antonio, even after that
33:04collapse, they're going to come out fired up.
33:07Obviously, they have a lot of talent.
33:09How does this play out on Saturday night?
33:12Well, look, about 15 minutes ago, Adam, Victor Rambayama said that not only do the Spurs
33:17believe they can win, they know they're going to win.
33:19So, you know, you can write that off if you want, because Victor's a very confident
33:22guy, but whatever.
33:23I mean, how else would you expect them to believe?
33:25That's the only way that, you know, if they didn't believe that way, you'd feel less about
33:28them.
33:29Look, I mean, I picked the Knicks in six, so I guess I'm going to stick with that, but
33:33look, I think they got a really good shot to get this done on Saturday.
33:37I do.
33:38Look, I just think, you know, people are going to say all the pressure on the Knicks.
33:41All the pressure will be on the Knicks in game six.
33:43I don't want to say it's a house money game because the trophy's in the building, but it's
33:47a game where if you can, and they've been so bad about getting off to good starts most
33:51of these games, if you can get out 10-2, you have the Spurs are calling the first time
33:55out, later on, and you're up eight late in the second quarter, and you kind of go from
34:00there.
34:00It doesn't guarantee anything.
34:01They're up seven and a half time in game three, but I think that once you ask a young
34:05team to stave off the end, it's going to be a lot harder for them to do.
34:10I think the Knicks have a great chance.
34:11I mean, like I said, I'm going to stick with my original pick because that's what you do,
34:15and certainly that would seem to be a logical way to go about it, but I do think I give
34:19the
34:19Knicks, you know, 50-50 to win on Saturday.
34:21I really do.
34:22Absolutely.
34:22We're on the same page.
34:23I said Knicks in seven originally, but the way they're playing right now, and the way
34:27they've played in San Antonio and making game four stick, getting off to that great start
34:32we talked about earlier in the show, I am with you completely.
34:35Mike, you're the best.
34:36We always appreciate the time.
34:37Love reading, of course, in the New York Post, and we'll talk to you again real soon.
34:41Sounds good, Adam.
34:42Thanks so much for everything.
34:44Now let's get to the tailor of it all.
34:47And I'm wearing my homage Nick York Post shirts for Stevie Nicks and Taylor Swift, and I absolutely
34:56loved that Stevie Nicks shirt, and that's why I had to make sure I got a Nick York Post
35:02shirt for this segment.
35:04Her attendance at game four of the NBA Finals brought the Taylor Swift scrutiny to the proceedings.
35:12Is Taylor Swift a real diehard Knicks fan?
35:17Does she deserve to be there on Celebrity Row for the greatest comeback in NBA Finals history?
35:24Let me be crystal clear.
35:28Yes, of course, obviously, and it's Taylor Swift.
35:35Couple of important things here.
35:37Number one, Taylor Swift is a Knicks fan.
35:41Let's start there.
35:42Taylor Swift has always been a Knicks fan.
35:45Taylor Swift became a true Knicks fan.
35:49There were two important things.
35:51Number one, when she moved to New York, and there are many people in New York, or wherever
35:58you live or move to as an adult, where you adopt the team in your new city.
36:04So let's be clear.
36:06So she certainly is a New Yorker.
36:09Let's be crystal clear on that.
36:11Number two, she loves Amari Stoudelmeier.
36:14There are so many pictures from back in the day where she was at Madison Square Garden,
36:20and she's cheering on Carmelo Anthony and Amari Stoudelmeier.
36:25Now, before anyone tells me, well, she was just in Cleveland, let me ask you something.
36:31I want you to think about this.
36:32And this is the relatable portion of the program.
36:34Have you ever done something or gone somewhere with your significant other because it matters
36:40to them?
36:40Just think about that before you start throwing shade, okay?
36:45Travis Kelsey is a real diehard Cleveland sports fan.
36:50He grew up in Cleveland.
36:51He wanted to be front row for the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Knicks.
36:57That doesn't make Taylor Swift any less worthy of being at Madison Square Garden for game four or whatever the
37:08hell she wants to be there.
37:09And I want to go back to something important here.
37:12She's a Knicks fan.
37:14She's a New Yorker.
37:15She's an Amari Stoudelmeier fan.
37:17She's been at the Garden numerous occasions for the Knicks.
37:21She's Taylor Swift.
37:24Like, there are certain celebrities and people in pop culture, they just matter more.
37:31Taylor Swift matters more.
37:34And her presence, and she's cheering, and she's sitting next to Mariska Hardenstein, who's the absolute greatest as a Knicks
37:43fan, as diehard as it gets.
37:44And if Olivia Benson says it's good enough for her, then why not?
37:49I mean, Mariska Hardenstein changed her shirt to a Stevie Nicks shirt to support Taylor Swift.
37:57We can all dance like Taylor.
37:59Why not?
38:00And let me tell you something.
38:02Did I say this yet?
38:04It's Taylor Swift.
38:06Taylor Swift is Taylor Swift.
38:08I'm a Swifty.
38:09How could you not be a Swifty?
38:11If you don't like Taylor Swift's music or if you don't respect her, I mean, you don't have a soul.
38:16I don't know what to tell you.
38:18All of her albums are great.
38:201989 is my personal favorite.
38:22August and Love Story are my two favorite Taylor Swift songs.
38:26I love it all.
38:27I mean, every single song, they're all banger after banger after banger.
38:33A Taylor Swift appearance is everything.
38:36I mean, if you're going to sit here and knock Taylor Swift or knock, oh, that's not a great sporting
38:43event.
38:43If Taylor Swift is a...
38:44Please, clearly that mattered to her.
38:47There are other people at that game who are not Knicks fans, okay?
38:52You know, Wall Street people who can afford it.
38:54That's...
38:54And whatever.
38:55That's more power to you.
38:57Do you think this is unique to New York?
39:00And you don't see this in L.A. or Philly or Boston or San Francisco or Chicago?
39:06Come on.
39:07That's an amateur hour thought, an amateur hour take.
39:10So, Taylor Swift is a Knicks fan.
39:13Taylor Swift is a New Yorker.
39:16Taylor Swift absolutely deserves to be there.
39:20It meant a lot to Chalamet.
39:22It meant a lot to every single celeb, to Kylie Jenner, to John McEnroe, to every celeb there that Taylor
39:30Swift was there.
39:31Because Taylor Swift is every celeb's favorite celeb.
39:36It mattered to the Knicks players and to the Knicks brass.
39:39I think anyone ripping Taylor Swift is just looking and reaching and searching for, hey, look at me online.
39:47Of course, Taylor Swift is a real fan.
39:49I mean, I just, I couldn't get enough.
39:52All of it was just phenomenal on Wednesday night.
39:56Now, she's a legit Knicks fan, but let's be crystal clear.
40:00Taylor Swift does not crack my list of top ten celebrity Knicks fans out there.
40:07So, this is a real conversation.
40:10My group chat with my friends blowing up, and it has been for weeks in terms of the celebrity fans
40:18and who the best celebrity fans are.
40:20And it's interesting when you get into this debate.
40:23I want to give you one caveat first and foremost here, okay?
40:26I don't have any former or current athletes on the list.
40:32So, John McEnroe, who is the best, but, you know, I still consider him a legendary tennis player.
40:39He's not on the list.
40:40John McEnroe is elite.
40:42He's special.
40:43There are a lot of great celebrities who don't make this, and I'll mention them at the end.
40:48But I've put a lot of time.
40:50I've been working on this puppy for weeks, okay?
40:54Number ten on my list, Adam Sandler.
40:57Adam Sandler is a legit, diehard, amazing Knicks fan.
41:03He represents the Knicks all the time.
41:07In New York, in L.A., in his movies.
41:10He's there when it matters.
41:12He's been there in the lean years.
41:14You hear him do sports radio, talk to Dan Patrick through the years, how much he loves the Knicks.
41:20He's a native New Yorker.
41:22Adam Sandler, always and forever, should be considered an elite celebrity, diehard Knicks fan.
41:29Number nine, Larry David.
41:32Larry David is awesome.
41:35And I know he spends a lot of time in Los Angeles.
41:38Don't make that into a negative.
41:39We all have to move somewhere where work dictates.
41:43And Larry David was all of us when he melted to the ground when Josh Hart missed that laugh.
41:50I mean, my goodness.
41:52Larry David is New York through and through.
41:55He's a diehard fan.
41:57I mean, look at that reaction, right?
41:59You know, I've heard him talk to Rich Eisen and Michael Kay about his fandom with the Knicks in the
42:04past.
42:04You know, you knew he was targeting these finals, this game, legitimate, amazing, diehard, passionate, has been there forever as
42:14a fan.
42:15Larry David deserves to be on this list.
42:17Number eight, Chris Rock.
42:19Now, Chris Rock isn't at the Garden recently as much as he used to be.
42:25But man, when you watch him, and first of all, he's Chris Rock.
42:29He lives and dies with this team.
42:31And he's there in the 90s.
42:34He's there in the 2000s.
42:36He's been there for the Jalen Brunson Knicks.
42:39And Chris Rock, I mean, you want to start talking about it.
42:42He's obviously very close with Seinfeld, with Sandler.
42:45He's there with all his celebrity buddies.
42:48You know, lives in New Jersey.
42:51Chris Rock, I mean, just go back to the Patrick Ewing days with him.
42:55Absolutely on the list.
42:57Mariska Hargitay is unbelievable.
43:00And I think that Mariska Hargitay is as legit and as diehard.
43:06And I want you to focus on what's on the screen there for Mariska Hargitay.
43:09She says the Knicks comeback was better than her wedding night.
43:14Mariska Hargitay says her, the comeback, game four, being at the Garden, was better than her wedding night.
43:25She's not saying she loves Jalen Brunson more than her husband.
43:29She's just talking about the game.
43:31And a couple of things here when it comes to Mariska Hargitay.
43:34First of all, she changed t-shirts, right?
43:36And again, that's part of my whole Taylor Swift rant.
43:38Taylor Swift should always be there.
43:40And if she's good enough for Mariska Hargitay, who's as great as it gets, then she should be good enough
43:44for everyone.
43:46She loves the Knicks.
43:47She's there all the time.
43:48So she's currently on Broadway, like literally in a play.
43:52She finished up on Wednesday at the big matinee day on Broadway.
43:57Two plays.
43:58She ended one of her plays, a 7 o'clock play.
44:02This is a true story.
44:03She talked about it 10 minutes early.
44:0610 minutes early.
44:08She put on her Brunson-Cobies, ran because of traffic, because you're not going to make it otherwise, to Madison
44:18Square Garden to be at this game.
44:22The clock hit zero, and she's on the court, and she almost interrupted the OG Ananobi interview, and she hugged
44:33Rick Brunson.
44:34Jalen Brunson has been quoted on numerous occasions saying that Mariska Hargitay is his favorite celebrity, and it stems from
44:42Rick Brunson is an obsessed Law & Order fan.
44:45Obsessed.
44:46So Jalen Brunson grew up watching Law & Order.
44:51So his favorite celebrity on Celebrity Row is always Mariska Hargitay, and I just think she is so smart, so
44:58passionate, so knowledgeable.
45:00She's been there forever.
45:01She's there, you know, against Sacramento.
45:04She's there in the big moments.
45:06She loves OG Ananobi.
45:08She lives and dies and breathes with this team.
45:11Absolutely, she's on the list.
45:13Now, if I say she's the best, and she doesn't crack my top six, this is when you know New
45:19York City and Knicks fans are beyond legit, and the celebs, they're us.
45:24Number six on my list is Fat Joe.
45:27Lean back.
45:28Lean back.
45:29Fat Joe is the man.
45:31Fat Joe is absolutely incredible.
45:34This guy is as smart, passionate, goes to games home and away.
45:41He's on the flight, on the private jet with Chalamet.
45:46I mean, this guy, when you start talking about the definition of Celebrity Row, it starts with Fat Joe.
45:52This guy, I mean, has been around forever.
45:54He's at every Knick game that has ever mattered.
45:57You know, you think about the Van Gundy Knicks.
45:59You think about the Riley Knicks.
46:01You think about the lean years Fat Joe was there.
46:04You think about how he's there for games and bad weather, games when they're out of it.
46:09Fat Joe is amazing, and he absolutely is worthy of being celebrated.
46:14Number five, Edie Falco.
46:16Edie Falco is unbelievable.
46:19Edie Falco is at every game.
46:21Edie Falco, and she's been interviewed, and she grew up in New York.
46:24I mean, she was, you know, years ago, a lifetime ago, before she, you know, hit the jackpot and became
46:30famous with Sopranos and, you know, Nurse Jackie, which was a very underrated show, by the way.
46:35I mean, when she was, you know, working and trying to get in as an actress, she was, you know,
46:40ultimately, she was a bartender at Canyon Road on the Upper East Side, a Mexican restaurant.
46:45And she was trying to save up enough money to go to Knicks games.
46:49She is as legit as it gets.
46:51And we showed that picture when she was just on Stephen A. Smith's show on Mad Dog Sports Radio.
46:56She dove really deep into her fandom.
47:00She's a native New Yorker.
47:01I mean, she could quote lineups from, you know, the early 80s.
47:05I mean, yeah, this picture is worth a thousand words.
47:08I mean, she could start talking about Hubie Brown's Knicks.
47:11You know, she could tell you the starting lineup for Rick Pitino's Knicks.
47:14She could start talking to you about when they drafted Kenny Skywalker.
47:18That's who Edie Falco is, and she deserves to be on this list.
47:22Number four, Tracy Morgan.
47:24And again, if Tracy Morgan's not in my top three, it tells you just how awesome this fan base is.
47:31Tracy Morgan's at every game.
47:32Tracy Morgan cares.
47:34Tracy Morgan, you know, not a frontrunner in any way, shape, or form.
47:38Knicks could be great.
47:39Knicks could be bad.
47:39He supports the team through thick and thin, and at every single moment in everything he's
47:45ever done professionally, always talking Knicks, always repping the Knicks, he's obviously
47:50personality-filled.
47:51I'm obsessed with Tracy Morgan.
47:5330 Rock was unbelievable.
47:54Tracy Morgan, absolutely worthy of this list.
47:57Number three, Ben Stiller.
48:00And I want to stress this.
48:02Ben Stiller's not in my top two, and I think Ben Stiller is the best.
48:05And, you know, the whole Met Gala thing drove me nuts, because sometimes work obligations,
48:10you know, get in the way.
48:12We can all relate to that.
48:13This is something I committed to a long time ago.
48:15Ben Stiller, home, road, lean years, when he lived in L.A.
48:20He was there in the 90s.
48:22If you look at Celebrity Road back then, he was there when, you know, he was doing all
48:26the different movies throughout the course of his career.
48:29Tropic Thunder, which is ridiculously underrated.
48:32It's an all-timer.
48:33Something about Mary.
48:34He's there for everything, right?
48:36I mean, go back and listen to any interview that Ben Stiller's ever done.
48:41The Knicks are part of his soul.
48:43It's who he is growing up as a New Yorker.
48:47And I get the chills just thinking about Ben Stiller and his fandom.
48:51Even when he was in L.A., for the most part, he was still a diehard Knicks fan.
48:56Ben Stiller is as amazing and as legit and as passionate as it gets.
49:02Number two, and I considered putting him number one, is Timothee Chalamet.
49:07And I know I'm going to get some heat for people saying, well, how do you put Chalamet ahead
49:12of Fat Joe or put him ahead of Stiller or put him ahead of Tracy Morgan?
49:17Because he's young.
49:19But that's the reason he's number two.
49:22And I was very close to putting Chalamet number one.
49:26Stay with me on this.
49:29Chalamet grew up as a diehard Knicks fan when the Knicks were awful.
49:35His youth is a strength here for this argument.
49:40He grew up when the Knicks were not making the playoffs.
49:44He grew up in a bad era of basketball.
49:48I was shaped by the 90s Knicks.
49:51So, obviously, I mean, I'm a diehard fan anyway, but those teams are iconic.
49:56He has no appreciation in terms of his lifetime and existence on earth for those teams.
50:01I mean, he grew up, and he's watching, you know, Trey Burke hitting shots.
50:06I mean, you know, he remembers Frank Nilekina being drafted.
50:09You know, he remembers the boons for Chris Stapp's poor Zingas.
50:13I mean, the fact is, and go search this on X, he is such a diehard fan.
50:18It goes back to when Landry Fields was on the team.
50:24And this is a true story.
50:25You can look this up.
50:27Landry Fields put on Twitter that the first person to find me at Grand Central
50:34gets two free tickets to the ballgame tonight.
50:38Then, you see, a couple minutes later, congrats to Tim Chalamet.
50:43And it's another 10-year-old Tim Chalamet, who, again, grew up in Manhattan.
50:49Knicks obsessed.
50:50He is a ball-knower.
50:51I love how he has made Kylie Jenner into a fan.
50:54He's on the road.
50:56He's also one of these guys, and he's talked about him.
50:59I saw him talk about this on Carmel Anthony's podcast at 7 p.m. in Brooklyn.
51:05I mean, you know that he's at home on a random Tuesday night in December
51:13watching the Knicks late night against Sacramento.
51:17You know that if he saw Bill Pito on the street, he would faint
51:22because he loves the MSG coverage.
51:24Like, that's why Chalamet is number two on the list.
51:28And look, number one is Spike Lee because it's Spike Lee.
51:31And obviously, you think about all these moments in Madison Square Garden
51:36and Spike Lee's there, and you think about how Spike Lee has become
51:41intertwined with the Knicks, right?
51:42I mean, the choke and Reggie and, you know, Halliburton and Patrick Ewing
51:47and Anthony Mason and all John Starks.
51:50I mean, he's Alan Houston.
51:52He's just part of it, right?
51:54But I will tell you, for the sake of conversation,
51:57I even thought about Chalamet number one on the list.
52:01But Spike Lee, he says number two right there.
52:04He's number one on my list.
52:05Look, there are so many great celebrities.
52:07John Turturro is, I mean, as amazing as it gets.
52:11I'm Jerry Seinfeld obsessed.
52:13I'm Seinfeld obsessed.
52:14You know, Jerry's fantastic.
52:16If there was a Mets list, he would be on it.
52:18My guy, Hank Azaria, incredible.
52:20Sam Murill, who's been on Shine Time.
52:22He's at every single Knicks game.
52:24I mean, that's the beauty of this conversation.
52:27But here is the official list.
52:29Spike Lee, Timothee Chalamet, Ben Stiller, Tracy Morgan,
52:33Edie Falco, Fat Joe, Mariska Harkite, Chris Rock, Larry David, Adam Sandler.
52:40Before we go, to quote Wyatt Earp in the movie Tombstone,
52:46you tell him I'm coming, and hell's coming with me.
52:50You hear?
52:51Well, Knicks fans are going to San Antonio.
52:54Take a look at this post from the Strickland on X.
52:58There are no remaining seats on direct flights from New York, New Jersey,
53:03to San Antonio today or tomorrow.
53:06More than half of the Game 5 ticket sales have come from the New York, New Jersey area.
53:15Knicks fans, like always, they're about to show out.
53:19That right there, that's a show.
53:21I hope on Monday we're talking about a Knicks championship
53:25from the first time in my lifetime.
53:28Enjoy the weekend.
