00:00Xbox says Gears of War exclusivity decision was made a month ago, amid PS5 logo confusion.
00:06A recent controversy surrounding Xbox's upcoming title Gears of War E-Day has sparked confusion
00:13after a PS5 logo briefly appeared in an official Xbox podcast deep dive before the video was later set to
00:20private.
00:21The appearance of the PlayStation branding fueled speculation that the game had originally been planned as a multi-platform release
00:27before being quietly shifted to Xbox exclusivity.
00:31However, Microsoft says that is not the case.
00:34Xbox marketing lead Aaron Greenberg addressed the situation on X,
00:38stating that the decision was not made at the last minute and had already been settled internally well before the
00:44public announcement.
00:45We just limited the knowledge of this news to a very small internal group, Greenberg wrote.
00:50The intention was to share this news first with our players and everyone watching the showcase.
00:55He also added, it is not true that it was a last minute decision.
01:00According to Greenberg, the call to make both Gears of War E-Day and Clockwork Revolution Xbox exclusives
01:06was made roughly a month prior to the June 7th showcase.
01:09He suggested the information was tightly controlled within the company ahead of the announcement,
01:14writing, I was made aware of these exclusives roughly a month in advance.
01:19The situation gained traction after multiple signs pointed toward an earlier multi-platform direction.
01:25In addition to the PS5 logo appearing in the Xbox podcast,
01:29a Walmart product listing had previously shown a PlayStation 5 version of the game ahead of the showcase.
01:36Giant Bomb's Jeff Grubb also claimed that a nearly complete PS5 version of Gears of War E-Day may already
01:42exist internally.
01:43Further speculation was fueled by broader uncertainty leading up to the showcase,
01:48including discussion around Microsoft's evolving approach to exclusivity.
01:52Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has previously acknowledged confusion
01:56caused by PS5 branding appearing in promotional materials tied to the event.
02:03The episode highlights ongoing tension around Microsoft's shifting strategy for first-party titles.
02:17Xbox chief strategist Matthew Ball recently defended the company's direction in an interview with the game business,
02:23arguing that the goal is to maintain a stable ecosystem for players
02:27while still recognizing the importance of exclusives and platform growth.
02:32Players can expect a reliable pipeline that validates the historical investment in the Xbox platform, Ball said,
02:38and keeps them as Xbox players going forward.
02:41Despite that framing, questions remain about how Microsoft's hybrid approach to exclusivity
02:47will work in practice and what it means for future Xbox releases
02:50as the company continues to refine its long-term gaming strategy.
02:58As far as keeping the announcement internal,
03:05you did that a little too well.
03:07You didn't let everyone know what they needed to do.
03:10No.
03:11But also, there's another angle at this.
03:15When Phil Spencer was screwing up Xbox,
03:18you know, making bad decision after bad decision,
03:22he's the one who wanted to bring Halo and Gears of War to PlayStation
03:25and get nothing in return for it.
03:28Like I said, if you're going to bring your first-party franchises to PlayStation,
03:36why aren't you asking for something in return to come over to Xbox?
03:40At this point, you might as well just ask PlayStation to have all your games on there
03:45and then just get rid of the Xbox.
03:50And of course, I bet if you ask Phil Spencer,
03:52he would say that was never...
03:54He was never planning that,
03:55but I don't know if he knows what he was planning, to be honest.
04:01So I think this is...
04:02I think that both of those played a part in this.
04:05On one hand, you had PlayStation because I think Asha Sharma is still cleaning up Phil Spencer's mess.
04:12She had to steer the Titanic in a completely different direction
04:18because Phil Spencer had it heading for the iceberg.
04:21On the other hand, I think they were trying to keep this like a...
04:25Maybe a surprise,
04:26but I think what happened is that caused someone that was like an editor of the video
04:35or someone who was editing the trailer or whatever,
04:41they didn't know that PlayStation was no longer getting it,
04:45which I think is the thing.
04:48I think because Asha Sharma said she's very committed to keeping Xbox franchises on Xbox.
04:57And yes, Xbox needs an identity.
05:01At least Sega waited till it died out before it let Sonic appear on Nintendo consoles.
05:09But enough ragging on Phil Spencer,
05:13but I do think this was like one of his screw-ups
05:15because I do remember the announcement was
05:18with Halo and Gears of War coming to PlayStation,
05:21what's the point of having an Xbox anymore?
05:24And I think Asha Sharma is reversing that.
05:29And maybe this was just something that got lost in translation
05:33since this is still Asha Sharma taking over the mess that Phil Spencer created.
05:39But what do you think?
05:41Do you think maybe this was...
05:44Maybe someone that should have known didn't get the memo
05:48because they were trying to keep this hush-hush
05:51and they kept it a little too hush-hush,
05:53including someone who needed to know
05:55to prevent this from happening?
05:59Maybe...
05:59Or...
06:01Do you think...
06:02Or do you think Gears of War and Halo
06:04are still making their way to PlayStation 5?
06:09You know, and I've always said,
06:12you know, if you can put Gears of War and Halo on there,
06:18bring over Killzone to Xbox.
06:20Bring over something to Xbox.
06:24Not just give up everything you have for nothing in return.
06:32So, yeah.
06:34Like I said, it was a mess that new management is cleaning up.
06:42And also, I think whoever made the trailer
06:46didn't get the memo that Gears of War no longer
06:49was coming to PlayStation 5.
