While the bye rounds have often fizzled, Round 13 delived with a series of close games.
Transcript
00:00Well, there's buys, but we're in the buy rounds at the moment, Steve.
00:02I'm going to tell you what, on the weekend, we didn't even know the buys were happening.
00:05We didn't even mention the buy rounds because we had a record-breaking weekend of games.
00:10Six games for the first time in VFL AFL history decided by single-figure margins.
00:15It was quite something.
00:17It's Adelaide by one point, the Dogs by six, Port by six, Sydney by two,
00:21Carlton by five, and yesterday, the Dees by eight at the MCG.
00:24We had one of the all-time great competitive, outside of the Kangaroos and Frio,
00:28one of the all-time great competitive footy weekends.
00:31Extraordinary games of footy, and I look at the Sydney St Kilda game.
00:34That was just relentless, wasn't it?
00:36That was just up and back, up and back.
00:39The Saints were unlucky in the end, but I think the message is that
00:41if you're getting involved in a shootout with Sydney,
00:44it's probably the bullet's going to come back at you.
00:45I don't think you can beat Sydney in a shootout.
00:48So they tried.
00:49They got very close.
00:50Terrible decision, that non-15 metres.
00:53Oh, yeah, that's bad.
00:54Down in that pocket there.
00:56That was a stinker.
00:56That went probably 22 metres, so that should have been a mark.
00:59Well, in the lab, they measured it last night on Fox.
01:02It was 15.1.
01:03Right, look further.
01:04It looked further than that.
01:06Some of the ones they pay.
01:07They've been cracking down on it.
01:09That was crazy.
01:09But the Saints just couldn't slow things down.
01:12And when that momentum comes in Sydney,
01:14particularly when they're kicking to that end,
01:16the non-Paddington end, which is...
01:20To the right of your screen.
01:21Yeah, the right of the screen.
01:22The emotion sort of gets going.
01:24Heaney's handball was a ripper.
01:25And Sarong, what a pick-up he's been.
01:27And they just keep getting it done, the Swans.
01:29Yeah, and while we talked about the Saints last week
01:31and the challenges they've faced in our view,
01:32certainly in my view,
01:33they were excellent in the first half of that game.
01:3511 goals before...
01:36And that little patch before half-time
01:38probably was the difference in the end.
01:40We know we talk about the Sarong goal late,
01:41but when Sydney kicked four in the last couple of minutes
01:44of that second quarter,
01:44that was probably the spot they lost it,
01:47despite the fact they got out to such a hot start,
01:50the Saints, which they do a lot.
01:51They get out to hot starts and they taper off
01:52and they fade out of games a lot.
01:54Seen that a fair bit so far this year
01:56with the way they've played.
01:57But they'll be ruining that loss.
01:59That was the one that really should have been
02:00four points in the bank for them.
02:02What about your Hawks half as well?
02:03One goal 11 in the second half.
02:04A lot of the shots...
02:05Doesn't help.
02:05No, a lot of them weren't...
02:07They weren't sitters.
02:08There was a couple of rush behinds there.
02:09They were shooting from wide.
02:11But what I'd like to say
02:12is someone who's followed the dogs for a long time.
02:14It's the first time I've seen some real mongrel
02:16come back in what they were doing.
02:18Dogs and mongrel.
02:18Yeah.
02:19Mongrel dogs.
02:20That's right.
02:20Lewis was up and about, obviously.
02:23And Selwood.
02:24So they used to...
02:25They've been a bit nice, the doggies, to be honest,
02:27the last 10 years.
02:28Very disciplined.
02:29But Bevo clearly had them revved up for that game.
02:32And I love to see some of that in-the-face stuff.
02:34Cicely.
02:35How do you see Cicely as a Hawthorne person?
02:37Half of them.
02:37He has created...
02:39Which caused a lot of consternation
02:41with some of his antics.
02:44Well, just the sort of mocking of celebrations.
02:47And did he get sucked in?
02:48Well, he went early.
02:49Him and Nick Watson, they went early on the weekend.
02:51And that's okay.
02:52I don't mind that.
02:53That makes them the players that they are.
02:55That came back and bit them on the backside.
02:56And they'll probably reflect upon that for the next time.
02:59But that's who they are.
03:00They're these competitive animals.
03:02Watson's a classic.
03:03He wants to eat you out there on the ground.
03:05He's one of those kids that just wants to eat you
03:07and compete so hard.
03:08He's going to try and embarrass you out there.
03:09Because that's what fuels him.
03:11And when he's up and about,
03:12he's one of the most exciting players in the call.
03:14So I don't see that as a massive problem.
03:16They might need to keep the antics in check a little bit.
03:19That's how they get themselves up.
03:21Before halftime, they celebrated a goal
03:22like it was a winning goal in a grand final.
03:24It was stacks on the mill.
03:25About eight guys jumped on him thinking,
03:26It was a good goal.
03:27Good goal.
03:28But I do like the way Hawthorne played footy,
03:30I've got to say.
03:31You want the emotion.
03:32You want the passion.
03:33But really gritty performance.
03:36It was a great fight by the dogs.
03:37It was a great fight by the dogs.
03:38The last eight or so minutes, no goal.
03:40And that just shows you don't need a shootout
03:42to have a great game.
03:42It was to and fro
03:43and some umpiring decisions
03:45that were interesting too.
03:47I mean, Lewis on the holding the ball one.
03:51Yes.
03:51On Eamon down.
03:52That was just caught cold.
03:54Yes.
03:54No free kick.
03:55And then the mark.
03:56That was a mark to Lewis, you'd think, as well.
03:58So sort of evened itself out.
04:00Well, they had a bit of a weekend, I reckon,
04:01sometimes, the whistleblowers.
04:03But we'll leave them alone this week.
