00:192026 presidential elections.
00:29In Cuba, the second International Biennale of Political Humor kicks off this Tuesday
00:34unite gathering artists from 38 countries in Havana to analyze cultural colonialism.
00:46Iran has announced the cessation of military operations against Israel following an attack
00:52on a northern air base.
01:02Hello welcome to From the South, I'm Lorena Fong from the Tres Recius in Caracas, Venezuela.
01:07We begin with the news, stay with us.
01:25We begin now with the information.
01:27Peru's National Office of Electoral Processes has begun releasing the official results of
01:33the presidential run of the election.
01:35With 92% of the ballots counted, right-wing candidate Keiko Fujimori, daughter of former dictator
01:40Alberto Fujimori, is in the lead with over 50% of the votes.
01:45Meanwhile, left-wing candidate Roberto Sánchez of the Juntos para el Perú party has secured
01:50over 49%.
01:52The electoral authorities are continuing the process.
01:55The remaining ballots are urging citizens to remain calm and await official reports.
02:03Media outlets and observers are closely monitoring the elections as Peru determines its political
02:09future for the coming years.
02:18In this regard, the candidate Roberto Sánchez reformed his commitment to unreserved respect
02:24for the official results issued by the electoral authority.
02:30We are committed to unreserved respect for the official results as will be the case from now on.
02:37We believe with great enthusiasm and hope that the time has now come to defend the vote for
02:44the rural communities, the rural vote, the vote for Peruvians, which through our representatives
02:49and our coordination support will be counted for lowest to highest.
02:57Now let's take a look at the candidates who will be facing off in the runoff.
03:01We begin with Roberto Sánchez Palomino, the presidential candidate for Juntos para el Perú party.
03:07Roberto Sánchez Palomino is a lawyer sitting congressman and former minister of foreign trade
03:12and tourism throughout Pedro Castillo's government.
03:15As the leading candidate for the left, his rights is largely explained by the support
03:20of the rural electorate, which is supported by former President Castillo.
03:25Palomino's agenda includes partnering Castillo and convening a constituent assembly
03:30to refund the state by means of a new constitution.
03:33According to some polls, he was poised to win on the first round in rural areas.
03:44We continue with Keiko Fujimori, whose daughter of former Peruvian dictator Alberto Fujimori,
03:50is running for the presidency of the country for the Popular Force Party.
03:55This is the fourth time that the 49-year-old candidate enters the presidential race representing the nation's far right
04:03wing.
04:03Fujimori has mainly exercised power from parliament, where her bloc has held a majority of seats during several governments.
04:12As a lawyer, she has promoted presidential vacancies and legislations that, according to her critics,
04:18have favoured big businesses, have granted impunity to criminal and corrupt sectors,
04:23and also have expanded the privileges of the political class.
04:34On Sunday, Bolivian peace and indigenous and trade union organizations announced the kidnapping of five central obrera leaders
04:42and accused the government of President Rodrigo Paz of deploying undercover agents.
04:47The leaders, Limber Sánchez, Patricia Sánchez, Eber Bravo, Sergio Onofre and Abelio Ramos,
04:53were kidnapped at around 20.40 local time in the town of El Alto by police officers in plain clothes
04:59who were carrying long guns.
05:01This irregular procedure occurred while the numbers of complaints about human rights violations and police abuse
05:08was growing just a few hours after the Congress approved special powers for the executive to act by exceptional means.
05:15The Vice President Edmundo Lara was present at the place where the trade union leaders had been taken
05:21and questioned the use of undercover agents.
05:32In Colombia, the History Pack Party presented a formal complaint to the National Electoral Council.
05:38The coalition seeks to stop the defamatory campaign against candidate Iván Cepeda-Castro.
05:43The complaint states that the election campaign's material displayed in the city of Cali
05:49not only contains false and taken out of context statements against presidential candidate Iván Cepeda,
05:55but also that it may have been financed irregularly violating the spending limits on transparency rules established by Colombian law.
06:04In this regard, the Historic Pact Party requested that the National Electoral Council adopt urgent precautionary measures,
06:11including the immediate removal of the posters, as well as the opening of a throughout investigation
06:17to determine those responsible, both materially and intellectually,
06:21for what they consider an attempt to sabotage democratic guarantees in the midst of the election campaign.
06:36And also on Sunday, a 20-year-old woman from the indigenous community in Colombia gave birth to a baby
06:44on board the Bencos Bioho Hospital ship, while the vessel was provided medical care along the Colombian Pacific coast.
06:51The birth of the baby, who is in good health, marks the first delivery performed on this flooding unit.
06:57The vessel, delivered by the national government on March 14, after an investment of P87 million,
07:04was built by Kotekmar to serve more than 150,000 people in 22 municipalities in the region.
07:13The vessel is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, operating rooms, laboratories,
07:18and a crew of 35 medical specialists, who can provide specialized consultations and surgeries without transportation costs for the residents.
07:27The Ministry of Health emphasized that this initiative demonstrates the effectiveness of the project,
07:33bringing medium and high-complexity services to the most remote and marginalized areas of the country.
07:47In our topics, thousands of people took over Paulista Avenue on Sunday to participate in the 30th Sao Paulo LGBTIQ
07:55Plus Pride Parade,
07:56a symbol of resistance against patriarchal and conservative culture.
08:01The march took place under the slogan 30 Years of the Sao Paulo Parade.
08:05The street took cold, the ballot box confirmed, and celebrated the parade's three-decade history.
08:11It is considered the largest event of its kind in the world, from sound, trucks, speakers,
08:17delivered messages emphasizing the importance of political participation and defending the rights of a historically marginalized population.
08:25The parade is an international benchmark for defending the rights of the LGBTIQ Plus community.
08:37Daniel Balbi, the first trans state representative from Rio de Janeiro, in her ex-social media post, stated,
08:44The street calls, the ballot box confirms,
08:47Today, Sao Paulo showed that the LGBTQAPN Plus population is present and that we will occupy our spaces, including political
08:55ones.
08:56Here in Rio de Janeiro, we will remain firm in the fight for graded LGBTQAPN Plus representation in positions of
09:05power.
09:12And now we have a show break coming up. We'll be right back. Stay with us.
09:29Welcome back to From the South. We move now to Cuba with artists from 38 countries and wide-ranging cultural
09:36programs.
09:36Cuba will host the second International Biennale of Political Humor from June 9 to 14.
09:43The event, dedicated this year to an analysis of cultural colonialism, received 359 works by 118 artists, of which 61
09:53were selected for exhibition.
09:55The event will feature prominent international cartoonists, exhibitions, conferences and community activities in Havana and San Antonio de los Baños.
10:05The event contributes to the consolidation of the island as a space for reflection on graphic humor, political satire and
10:13new forms of visual expression on the international stage.
10:25And as concerns grow over the rise of AI-powered civilians, a debate is unfolding in the United States over
10:32how far monitoring technologies are spending.
10:36From license plates reader to predictive analytics, critics warn that the best network of data collection is already taking shape
10:43across the country.
10:44Our colleague, Dan Albright, has more details.
10:49U.S. media points to China as the warning sign for authoritarian AI surveillance.
10:55But the United States is building its own version. Town by town, police contract by police contract.
11:02I'm standing right in front of a flock safety license plate reader.
11:06Every passing car becomes searchable data. Plate, vehicle, make, model, color, time and location.
11:12And with nearly 90,000 cameras nationwide, flock is not just selling cameras.
11:19Flock itself owns the hardware, right? And they're a cloud-based service.
11:24Eventually you have this national lookup network.
11:26All of that data became searchable because flock created a network that was searchable.
11:31Flock says communities control their data and says ICE has no direct access unless local agencies allow it.
11:38But critics say data can still move through local police, share databases, informal searches, accidental sharing or other agencies.
11:47And flock is only one layer.
11:50AI can be added to ordinary footage, traffic cameras, police and private security cameras to search for people, clothing, patterns
11:58and behaviors, even making predictions about risk.
12:01The system can't be wrong.
12:04The major concern is, are we creating kind of a super surveillance apparatus through the combination of the camera technology,
12:15the database technology and the ways that that AI is able to analyze that information and draw inferences from that
12:24information.
12:25Police say these tools solve crimes, but searchable location data can also be weaponized against undocumented immigrants, protestors and dissidents.
12:35Here in Massachusetts, public money is flowing into AI, robotics, quantum and defense tech.
12:41And while not every project is surveillance, the same capacities, machine vision, pattern recognition, autonomous systems and data fusion are
12:51being built across policing borders and war.
12:54That overlap is already global.
12:56Palantir working with Israeli occupation forces.
12:59Peter Thiel's ties to Argentina's new AI social digital twin.
13:03And AI systems increasingly used to identify, track and target people in war.
13:08We hold up China as a bogeyman, but it allows us to kind of do exactly that exact move where
13:15we just then brush away the accountability for what's happening in the United States.
13:20Because what we are exporting is, in effect, turnkey surveillance authoritarianism.
13:26The question is whether the public is being asked to accept a warrantless tracking network before it understands what has
13:34already been built.
13:36From Lynn, Massachusetts, Dan Albright, tell us short.
13:42As in the United States, at least five people were stabbed at the Penn Metro station in New York City.
13:48The injured were taken to Bellevue Hospital, one of them with serious injuries.
13:52And the alleged attacker, who has been detained, is considered emotionally disturbed.
13:57The citizen maximum security alerted due to the expected visit of President Donald Trump, who will attend the final NBA
14:04basketball game.
14:05The attack highlights the growing violence on the streets of the United States exacerbated by the social crisis and the
14:12lack of effective policies.
14:14Authorities continue investigating the motives behind the attack.
14:26The 2026 FIFA World Cup to be held in the United States, Mexico and Canada is said to be one
14:33of the most complex and highly secure sports events in history, in light of the rise in gun violence and
14:39social conflicts in the country.
14:40In contrast to Canada, where risks are lower, and Mexico, where concerns center on organized crime, the United States faces
14:48specific threats linked to the widespread access to firearms, political polarization and the use of artificial intelligence technologies for disinformation
14:58campaigns.
14:58Our arms have escalated in the latest few hours following shootings in Ohio and Kansas City, a knife attack in
15:06New York City and clashes in New Jersey and other cities rejecting the Trump administration's repressive policies.
15:13In this way, the World Cup was meant to be a global celebration of sports will take place in a
15:20country plagued by tensions, violence and guns.
15:32In our information, after concluding her visit to India, Acting President of Venezuela, Delcy Rodriguez, arrived in Turkey as part
15:41of an international work agenda to strengthen bilateral relations.
15:44Upon arriving at the Istanbul International Airport, the Venezuelan acting President was welcomed by ceremonial honours by a high-level
15:53delegation of Turkish government officials.
15:55The Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Alperslan Bayraktar, led the formal welcome, accompanied by the Deputy Governor of Istanbul
16:05and the Deputy Mayor of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality.
16:09As part of her official visit, the Acting President will hold meetings with senior Turkish government officials to strengthen ties
16:17of diplomatic trade and strategic cooperation.
16:42Early results of Armenia's parliamentary elections released by the Central Election Commission showing the ruling civil contract party in the
16:51lead.
16:52With 57.14 of the votes and 19,654 ballots counted, the ruling party led by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan
17:02is in the lead.
17:04In second place is the strong Armenia with 21.43% of the votes.
17:09The Armenian alliance, led by former President Robert Kosharyan, is further behind with 8.21%, a total of 1,476
17:21,597 citizens voted in these elections, which will determine the country's political direction for the next five years.
17:30These preliminary results reflect an involving political landscape in which the ruling party holds a substantial lead over its rivals
17:39throughout while most of the votes remained to be counted.
17:49Final show break, but we'll be back with more from the South. Don't go away.
18:22Welcome back to the South.
18:23Let me move now to the Middle East, where Iran announced the cessation of military operations against Israel following its
18:30recent response in support of the Lebanese people, in which it attacked the Israeli Ramad David Airbase in the occupied
18:38northern territories.
18:39In a statement, Iranian armed forces reported that the attacks were in response to Sinai crimes in southern Lebanon, which
18:46have also led to the forced displacement of more than one million Lebanese.
18:51The war between Israel and Iran continues representing a major escalation as both sides continue to exchange attacks, keeping regional
19:00tensions at a critical level.
19:02In turn, the Iranian government reiterated that the ceasefire between Iran, the United States and Israel, which took effect on
19:09April 8, was conditional on a truce on all fronts, including Lebanon.
19:22In that context, Iran issued a warning to Israel that if it continues to attack Lebanon, the response will be
19:28even more forceful.
19:29Iran indicated that it will take much more severe measures against Israeli territory due to the Zionist regime's paraded attacks
19:37against southern Lebanon.
19:39And finally, it warned the United States and its allies that Iran will stand firm and united with the resistant
19:45forces in the region under any circumstances and against any threat ready to respond.
19:58On Sunday, activists from 13 countries began a hunger strike in solidarity with the volunteers of the Global Sumatland convoy
20:06who were detained by Libyan authorities en route to the Gaza Strip.
20:10The organization denounced that 10 of the activists have been detained and have been on hunger and thirst strike for
20:18seven days to demand the release of international campaign includes mobilization and protest dates in different countries with the aim
20:27of pressuring the Libyan government and authorities to secure the release of the volunteers and guarantee their physical integrity.
20:43Chinese President Xi Jinping is already in Pyongyang, the capital of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, where he was
20:50received with full honors by leader Kim Jong-un.
20:53Before departing for this first visit in seven years, the Chinese president described the friendship between the two nations as
21:00unbreakable.
21:02The welcome in the North Korean capital also included a military parade and colorful mass rallies.
21:08The Chinese leader's arrival highlights the strategic importance they attached to their historic relationship in an international scenario characterized by
21:17tensions and growing political disputes.
21:20Beijing and Pyongyang ratified on Monday their decision to continue committing to a partnership based on economic cooperation and political
21:29coordination straining one of the most significant ties in East Asia.
21:41This Monday, the Chinese government rejected proposals put forward by sectors of the European Union to reduce dependence on supply
21:49chains linked to China.
21:51China.
21:52Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stated that industrial and trade integration between China and Europe is the result of
22:02globalization and business decisions based on efficiency and competitiveness.
22:07He also defended the economic relationship between the two sides as mutually beneficial.
22:12While he warned that the diversification policies promoted by some European actors could lead to protectionist practices and reiterated Beijing's
22:22willingness to resolve trade disputes throughout dialogue and cooperation.
22:36On Monday, Pope Leo XIV met with the Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez as part of his apostolic journey throughout
22:43Spain.
22:44Before arriving at the Congress of Deputies to meet with members of the Spanish Parliament,
22:49on Monday on Monday, the third day of his trip to Spain,
22:53the Pope Leo XIV met with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.
22:56The private meeting lasted approximately 20 minutes.
23:00On the third day, the Pope is also expected to meet with the Spanish bishops at the Conference of Bishops'
23:07Headquarters at 11.30 a.m.
23:09Then he will pray and pay homage to the Virgin of Almudena in the Cathedral of Santa Maria de la
23:16Almudena at 6.00 p.m. local time.
23:18And at 7.00 p.m. he will meet with a diocesan community at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.
23:24The apostolic journey of Pope Leo XIV in Spain is expected to last until June 12,
23:30with more activities expected from the Supreme Pontiff.
23:44Communities around the globe are marking World's Ocean Days on this June 8,
23:49an international observance dedicated to celebrating and protecting the oceans that sustain life on Earth.
23:57Recognized by the United Nations, the annual event highlights the vital role oceans plays
24:02in producing oxygen, regulating the planet's climate, supporting biodiversity,
24:08and providing food and livelihoods for billions of people.
24:12Covering more than 70% of the Earth's surface, oceans are considered one of the world's most important resources.
24:21However, scientists and environmental organizations continue to warn that marine ecosystems face growing threats
24:28from pollution, overfishing, climate change, ocean modification, and habitat destruction.
24:34This year's observance serves as a reminder that protecting the ocean is not only an environmental priority,
24:41but also essential for the future of communities and economies worldwide.
24:53And like this, we have come to the end of this news brief.
24:56For Tell us in English, I am Lorena Fong. Thank you for watching.
