00:55Hello, welcome to From the South. I'm Lorena Fon from the Telesurio Studios in Caracas, Venezuela.
01:01We begin with the news. Stay with us.
01:16The United States government has imposed a new sanction against Union Cuba Petrolio
01:21in what constitutes an escalation of the economic blockade that for more than six decades
01:26has sought to strangle the Caribbean nation.
01:28The measure announced today by the United States government
01:31tightens the energy blockade against the country and directly impacts vital services
01:36such as energy, transportation and food preparation.
01:39Its goal is to hinder the country's access to fuels, essentials for electricity, generation,
01:45public transportation and the daily lives of Cubans.
01:49From Havana, authorities described these sanctions as a new attack by the Empire
01:53against the Cuban people who are already suffering the consequences of a genocidal blockade
01:59that was strained during the Donald Trump administration.
02:09In the context, the Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez rejected the measures implemented by Donald Trump
02:15in the presidential cabinet that negatively affected the island.
02:19Throughout his social media, the Foreign Minister expressed that the United States Secretary of State's
02:25is driven by ambitions of conquest in presidential aspiration and the vindictive nature of the elite class
02:31has propelled his political career is now further tightening the economic and energy blockade against Cuba.
02:38Furthermore, he continued.
02:40To justify it, he does not resort to excuses prepared by his Department of State,
02:45but to visualize and vulgarize the most aggressive, ill-informed and angry of the Cuba's enemy.
02:59As part of the 114th International Labour Conference that is being held in Geneva, Switzerland,
03:05Cuba's Minister of Labour and Social Security, Jesús Otamendi López,
03:10made a strong denunciation of the economic blockade imposed by the United States and its severe effects on workers.
03:17In this regard, the minister asserted that the United States' silence aims to suffocate the Cuban population
03:24and cause a humanitarian crisis.
03:26He gave a detailed description of the effects of Washington's measures on health, education
03:32and decent living conditions for workers.
03:34However, far from giving it into the slash-aggressions,
03:39he detailed the exceptional measures that the revolutionary state has implemented to protect the working class,
03:46including job relocation, a 100% guarantee of wages, and other effective forms of protection for them.
04:03Venezuela's acting president Elsie Rodríguez led the signing of agreements with the multinational company Shell
04:09to launch the first phase of developing and exploiting the Loran Field.
04:14The Loran Field as a non-associated natural gas asset comprises seven reservoirs,
04:20six of which extend into the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.
04:24During the meeting, five strategically significant instruments were assigned to enhance Venezuela's energy capacity
04:31for domestic consumption and export markets.
04:34Through these agreements, Venezuela has reformed its commitment to attracting investment from global partners
04:40and its capacity to execute projects that improve production efficiency and the sustainable management of resources.
04:57Today, we are taking a historic step. At least, that is how I see it.
05:02With the signing of this license for phase one of the development and exploitation of the Loran Field,
05:08which, as the minister has said, is a cross-border field that we share with Trinidad and Tobago.
05:16This license will enable Venezuela to take a very important step forward in its gas development and as a gas
05:24exporter.
05:26Since we began negotiations with Shell and other companies in the gas sector,
05:31we have said that we want to turn Venezuela into a gas exporter.
05:37With this signing, we are affirming that pathing a field that, it must be said, has lacked development for 23
05:43years.
05:46That is why I stepped with the signing of this license,
05:50where we will able to utilize gas for export properly
05:54and where we, too, will reap great benefits for Venezuela.
06:05In our information, Vice President Edmund Lara has launched harsh criticism at the Bolivarian government over the scandal,
06:13involving 108 tons of drugs hiding in the woods at Chilean ports.
06:19Edmund Lara's criticism is directly aimed at government minister Marco Viedo, police commanders and former anti-drug authorities.
06:27He also stated that he will not be part of the international commission proposed by the president's office
06:34because it includes the DEA and will be conducted outside the country.
06:38According to the Vice President, this fact undermines the seriousness of an investigation.
07:02The right wing candidate Keiko Fujimori of Peru maintains the lead over the candidate for the left wing party together
07:09for Peru,
07:10Roberto Sánchez with a difference of 1,303 votes in the presidential runoff.
07:16The latest update keeps right wing candidate Keiko Fujimori in first place of the presidential runoff,
07:21with more than 98% of the votes counted.
07:24The margin between the two candidates remains less than one percentage point,
07:28a situation that keeps the Peruvian people in suspense.
07:31Electoral authorities reported that there are still ballots to be counted,
07:34so as of now there is no declared winner.
07:50The National Jury of Elections in Peru informed the public that the General Act of Proclamation has not yet been
07:57issued
07:57and that there are no official results for the 2026 presidential runoff elections.
08:02In a statement, the electoral authority emphasized the following.
08:05In accordance with current electoral legislation,
08:08the proclamation of results may only be carried out once the legally established stages have been completed.
08:15This includes resolving challenge tally sheets, addressing annulment requests,
08:19and consolidating the general vote count by the National Office of Electoral Processes.
08:24The National Jury of Elections also added,
08:27we reiterated to the public and political organizations that the only official results and actions of the electoral process
08:34are thus communicated through our institutional channels in accordance with the procedures established to abide the constitutions and laws.

09:32Welcome back to From the South. We continue with more information.
09:35Colombian's Alliance for Life presidential candidate, Ivan Cepeda,
09:39filled the criminal complaints with the National Prosecutor's Office
09:42and the International Criminal Court against his far-right rebel,
09:46Abelardo de la Esprila.
09:47Cepeda alleged that de la Esprila has ties to the now defunct United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia
09:53by the military structures.
09:55Cepeda accuses de la Esprila of aggravated criminal conspiracy, financing, terrorism,
10:00and illicit enrichment offenses that Cepeda described as crimes against humanity.
10:05At a press conference, the left-wing candidate revealed that the evidence includes the selection of congressional candidates
10:13alleging support by the paramilitary group suspected bribery in prisons,
10:18unauthorized access to properties belonging to convicted paramilitary leaders,
10:23and de la Esprila's alleged involvement in the irregular appointment of former Attorney General Mario Guaran.
10:28While the far-right seeks to conceal its alleged tie to paramilitarism,
10:33progressive forces continue to defend social justice, historical truth, and human rights.
10:45I ask the National Prosecutor's Office to reopen the inquiries and investigation
10:50to determine the extent of the Esprila's involvement with paramilitary organizations
10:55and whether he is responsible for the following three crimes.
11:00Conspiracy to could meet a crime, financing of paramilitary groups, and illicit enrichment,
11:06also as a second action.
11:08I ask the International Crime Court to investigate the acts that are the subject of the investigation
11:15or should be, given that such acts have been committed or have been involved in the commission of crimes
11:23covered by the Rome Statute, that an investigation be conducted by the International Criminal Court
11:31since these crimes, as is well known, are not being properly investigated by the Colombian justice system.
11:46The Colombian Congress has passed a will aimed at preventing and eradicating female genital mutilation,
11:52a practice that mainly affects girls and has been deemed by international organizations to be a violation of human rights.
12:00The initiative includes measures of prevention, community education, comprehensive care for victims,
12:06and strengthening the institutions responsible for addressing the issue.
12:10During the legislative debate, it was noted that over 200 cases have been reported in the country in recent years,
12:16which has driven to the adoption of specific measures to address the situation.
12:21Although the bill has already received Congress endorsement,
12:25it must still complete the final stages of the legislative process before becoming law.
12:30Its main challenge will be to ensure effective implementation in communities where cases are still being reported.
12:43On Thursday, White President Donald Trump distracted the world with a series of attacks against Iran.
12:49United States media revealed the severity of the political crisis unfolding in the White House amid the Jeffrey Epstein scandal.
12:56The crisis escalated according to a recently released report after the Department of Justice and the FBI issued a memorandum
13:04stating that they had not found the alleged client list.
13:07Far from calming speculation, the document caused much discomfort and created divisions among the president's political base.
13:15The recent revelation not only exposes the fragility of the president's support,
13:19but also the gravity of the information contained in those files.
13:23Several United States politicians set aside Iran and the World Cup to emphasize to the Republican government's immoral course.
13:38Britain's defense leadership is facing growing turmoil after Armed Forces Minister Al-Karren resigned on Thursday,
13:45just a hour after Defense Secretary John Healy stepped down.
13:49In his resignation letter to Prime Minister Keir Starmer,
13:53Karn said the government's military spending plans do not match the scale of current security threats
13:59or provide enough resources for the armed forces.
14:02Karn warned that global instability is increasing
14:06and that modern warfare is evolving faster than Britain can adapt under current funding levels.
14:12His departure follows Healy's resignation a day earlier,
14:17who also raised concerns that existing defense budgets could reduce military readiness and affect national security.
14:24The back-to-back exit of two senior defense figures revealed deep cracks at the heart of Stermer's government
14:31exposing a serious rift that goes far beyond ordinary budget disputes.
14:43Former South Korean President Yoon Suk-yul has been sentenced to 30 years in prison in a case tied to
14:50the brief imposition of martial law that plunged the country into political turmoil in late 2025.
14:57A Seoul court found Yoon guilty of ordering drone incursions into North Korea as part of an effort to raise
15:05tensions on the Korean Peninsula
15:06and create a justification for the controversial move.
15:10The Seoul Central District court convicted the president on charges including benefit to the enemy and abuse of power.
15:18According to ruling, Yoon ordered the drone operation in October 2024 with the intention of provoking North Korea and increasing
15:26tensions across the border.
15:28The court said that the expected escalation was intended to provide a basis for Yoon's declaration of martial law on
15:34December 3, 2024.
15:43Health authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo are warning that the country's latest Ebola outbreak continues to spread,
15:50with confirmed cases now rising to 676, including 136 deaths.
15:57Officials reported 40 new infections and one and nine deaths in a single day across the eastern provinces of Ituri
16:05and North Kivu.
16:06The outbreak caused by the Bundibu strain of the virus has now reached 29 health zones in three provinces.
16:14Authorities say cases are increasing week after week pointing to ongoing community transmission.
16:20More than 5,700 contacts are currently being monitored, but officials acknowledge that contact tracing remains below target levels.
16:29Health experts want that without faster containment efforts, the outbreak could spread into new areas,
16:36raising concerns in a region already affected by large-scale displacement and cross-water movement.
16:48In this sense, the Democratic Republic of Congo ramped up its Ebola response with the inauguration of a new treatment
16:55center in Bunia.
16:56The World Health Organization stated that there is currently no licensed vaccine or specific treatment for this strain
17:03and that they recently launched a $518 million continental response planned with the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
17:12to support containment measures.
17:14The advisor to the military governor of Ituri, Dr. Gian Alasha, stated that this new center represents a strengthening of
17:22the response system
17:23and helps them to take a better care of patients.
17:26Let's recall that the outbreak caused by the Bundibu strain of Ebola was officially declared by the Democratic Republic of
17:33Congo on May 15,
17:35after cases where it identified Mbunia, Rampoara and Mongualu health zones.

18:22Final show break, don't go away.
18:31Welcome back to Front of the South.
18:33We're going out to the Middle East because United States President Donald Trump claimed to have reached an agreement with
18:39Iran.
18:43The war with Iran.
18:45And we're going to be subject to finalization of documents.
18:50We should get done over the next few days.
18:53We'll probably have a signing maybe in Europe.
18:56The Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs denied United States President Donald Trump's claims regarding a potential agreement between Washington and
19:04Tehran.
19:05Speaking on the status of ongoing discussions, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Bajei said Iran has not yet reached a
19:14final position or decisive conclusion on the proposed agreement.
19:17Bajei noted that while a draft memorandum of understanding is nearly complete, the main obstacle remained.
19:25What he described as contradictory statements and shifting positions from the United States side.
19:31According to Bajei, United States officials attempted to introduce additional issues during recent talks.
19:37But Iran demonstrated that it would not yield to pressure or compromise on court positions.
19:48The Iranian government is stepping up control over the Strait of Hormuz and accuses Washington of being the greatest threat
19:54to maritime traffic in the region.
19:57Iranian authorities have strengthened controls over one of the world's most important trade routes.
20:02They intercepted an oil tanker that attempted to pass through the Strait of Hormuz this Friday.
20:07Also, and after, United States troops attacked an Indian vessel and another flying, the Guinean flag, resulting in casualties and
20:15injuries.
20:15They asserted that the United States has become the greatest threat to maritime activity in the region.
20:27The Israeli army has escalated its attacks and is carrying out illegal raids on towns in southern Lebanon and the
20:34western Beka Valley.
20:35Local authorities reported that the Israeli regime launched an offensive against villages in the Nabatae district and in the Iskifa
20:43in the Tiro district.
20:44Meanwhile, the Lebanese army dismantled unexploded ordnance urging the public to exercise automatic action around the explosive remains.
20:54Despite the established ceasefire, Israel continues to attack the territory, leaving more than 3,500 deaths since the beginning of
21:02March.
21:09This Friday, Cardinal Pierre-Baptiste Abit-Zabal, a leading patriarch of Jerusalem, denounced the deep humanitarian crisis in Gaza and
21:17the occupied West Bank.
21:18During a press conference, he denounced that most Palestinians in Gaza are surviving in tents or among the ruins of
21:25entire neighborhoods labeled by the genocidal army.
21:28In this regard, the patriarch states that the situation in the Palestinian territories has only worsened and he draws attention
21:36to the progressive dehumanization and normalization of their suffering.
21:40Facing the situation, the Catholic priest also stated that the worst remains silent in a complete manner.
22:06In our information, Mexico opened the 2026 World Cup with a convincing 2-0 win or South Africa at a
22:15packed Aztec stadium.
22:16But this scoreline only tells part of the story.
22:19Mexico started aggressively pressing high and trying to force effort errors in South Africa's build-up.
22:26That pressure paid off early when Julián Quiñones scored in the ninth minute after a defensive mistake, finishing a quick
22:33transition move that set the tone for the match.
22:36Mexico stayed compact in midfield using short combination to control Tempe and Pines South Africa deep.
22:44South Africa actually grew into the game midway throughout the first half while Lyle Foster and Percy Tao trying to
22:50stretch Mexico on the break.
22:52Their best moment came from quick counters, but they struggled to break throughout Mexico's structured back line and the atmosphere
23:00of nearly 80,000 home fans.
23:02The turning point came in the second half of the South just outside the box after a VAR review and
23:08later Tempe Swain also saw red.
23:11With two men down, the defensive shape completely unraveled and Mexico controlled position almost entirely.
23:17Raúl Jiménez sealed the win with a 66th minute with a classic header, timing his run perfectly to finish across
23:25from the right and effectively and to contest from the Mexico shift into game management and protecting key players.
23:33Tactically, Mexico won it high, pressing early and control and midfield later while South Africa's plan depended too much on
23:43transitions and wasn't done by indiscipline and fatigue.
23:55In a brief post-match highlighting Mexico's opening goal against South Africa didn't just shake the Azteca Stadium just minutes
24:02after.
24:03Julián Quiñones opened the scoring Mexican president, Claudia Sheinbaum, who was visibly celebrating the strike, standing smiling and applauding alongside
24:12hundreds of Mexican fans.
24:13It was a short but powerful moment, one goal, one stadium explosion and a precedent caught in the emotion of
24:21a historic night in Mexico football.
24:28And like this, we have come to the end of this news brief.
24:31For Telesur English, I am Lorena Fong.
