15:44and there's gravel on about, probably about 75% of this lease,
15:48which encumbers the pit and everything as well.

16:04It's really set a fire under the whole mining industry.
16:07With all the mining going on in the area,
16:09all the roads are getting destroyed by the oil trucks,
16:12things like that, they need gravel.
16:14For a road-building company,
16:15they've got no interest in the gold in the dirt
16:17because that gold's lost.
16:19It's basically made into the roads.
16:21In the early days,
16:23Kalgoorlie was actually paved with gold.
16:26The roads were made with the material.
16:28It was that rich they ended up going back,
16:30ripping the roads up to process it for the gold.
16:34In the 1890s,
16:36Kalgoorlie's gold rush turned a dusty town
16:39into a thriving city.
16:41Using local materials laced with traces of gold,
16:44the race to build was far more valuable
16:47than extracting it at the time.
16:51I'm just going to start laying a pad out
16:52sort of this direction a little bit.
16:55Gravel, of all things,
16:56could actually end up paying him more than the gold.
16:58We've just got to prove that Brad's not walking away
17:00from an even bigger fortune in the gold mine.
17:04With gold prices soaring up more than 40% in the last year,
17:09holding on to gold-rich ground
17:11could prove a strong long-term investment.

18:37to what we call the pad area,
18:38and then we push them out into a pad six inches deep.

18:43and recover any gold nuggets that are there.
18:46What we're really looking for is some virgin ground,
18:49ground that the old-timers have missed,
18:51and in that virgin ground,
18:52anything can be laying in wait there for us, anything.

19:12I'd love to be out there finding the big nuggets,
19:14but we're going to need as much gold as possible

19:20With monster nuggets at Caddo's paddock far from guaranteed,
19:2415 minutes south at German gully,
19:27the team are depending on 18-year-old Caden
19:30to deliver steady fine gold
19:32through their six-tonne-an-hour mini wash plant.
19:36We've got a hopper.
19:37This is what I'm filling up with dirt.
19:39Simple conveyor belt feeds the dirt into the trommel barrel,
19:43which breaks up all the clays as the water washes over it.
19:47For all the smaller, finer gold-bearing gravel,
19:50then it gets washed down over a sluice
19:52so the gold gets caught, clean it up and get the gold out.
19:55Oh, I'm absolutely over the moon.
19:57I have a job that I love and I've been dreaming to do
19:59since I was a little kid.
20:01Because I want to show Dad a nice gold bar
20:03at the end of the week.

22:45Millions of years ago,
22:47shifting tectonic plates
22:48pushed gold-rich cords towards the surface
22:51where it hardened into rock.
22:54As erosion set the gold free,
22:56gravity forced it into ancient river systems
22:59where it became trapped in bedrock crevices.
23:05This is a little bit of exposed bedrock
23:07that's coming up through the top.
23:09This probably runs along under the ground
23:10and it's just come to the point where it's exposed here.
23:12It's definitely got all the right ingredients for gold.
23:16I'm worried.
23:17I feel like the pressure's really on me.
23:19So you get your head around a gold field and understand it
23:22and then all of a sudden it's like you've got to start all over again
23:25and hope that there's a really good reward at the end of it.
