01:30And Smith will easily stroll in.
01:32Touchdown, Cowboys.
01:36We've been run over by the Cowboys two years in a row.
01:4092, we were the big dogs, had been that way for a long time, and they beat us.
01:44And they kind of embarrassed us in our own place.
01:47The 93 went down to Dallas and got beat up pretty bad.
01:52A pretty substantial beating.
01:54It may have been tasteless and tacky, but the fact of the matter is they said they were going to
01:59do it, but they delivered.
02:01NFL film.
02:02Tell them what you're doing to Jerry Rice.
02:03You ain't doing nothing.
02:04I'm on Jerry Rice.
02:06I'm on Jerry.
02:07I'm on him.
02:07I remember my NFC championship losses probably more than I remember the wins because it hurts so bad.
02:24We were in a kind of a humiliated state.
02:27We were like, hey, look, despite the fact we've had MVP years and all this stuff, we were getting run
02:33over by the same team.
02:38And so, 94, we were really focusing on one goal, and that was to equip our team to be able
02:48to beat the Dallas Cowboys.
02:52The blueprint for beating Dallas began with blue-chip players.
02:56There were 27 new faces on the 1994 roster, including all-pro cornerback Deion Sanders.
03:04And linebacker Ken Norton.
03:08The 49ers took Norton from the Cowboys.
03:11That evened the score for the Cowboys, taking Charles Haley from the 49ers three years earlier.
03:16Yes, sir.
03:18It was as if we nicked you back.
03:21It's just us two.
03:22There's no one else in the league.
03:23There's no other teams that are really playing for the championship.
03:26It's just us two.
03:27So Charles Haley goes, and we finally got you nicked back.
03:30We added Deion, and we got Ken Norton.
03:33So all of a sudden, emotionally, we were like, hey, all right, we're in a fight.
03:37So we had a little counterpunch.
03:40Those players came in, basically, one, two-year deals, and they understood that if we do not get it done
03:48this year,
03:49this organization is going to blow itself up.
03:54With new players came a new attitude.
03:56The corporate all-business 49ers now had a funky strut.
04:06It's a very interesting dynamic.
04:09If we're going to play as if our jobs are on the line, because quite frankly, they are,
04:13we might as well have as much fun as possible.
04:17Stay as loose as possible, and do not let the weight of what we're trying to accomplish get in the
04:22way of us playing our best football.
04:24And for that team, especially with young players like William Floyd and Ricky Waters,
04:30you couldn't apply the traditional corporate 49ers to those players.
04:35It wouldn't have worked.
04:38And to George Seifert's credit, he basically threw out the formula in which he's been a part of
04:44in winning four Super Bowls with the 49ers and said, hey, I'm willing to trust you
04:50and let you take control of this thing.
04:52I'm young, I'm pretty, and can't possibly be beat.
04:58Just a phenomenal job on George Seifert's part in letting us be us.
05:06So now all of a sudden we had guys trash talking.
05:09It was different than what we were used to, but I think at the time, probably a good thing.
05:16The new-look 49ers scored a franchise record 505 points in 1994.
05:22They won the Western Division title for the third consecutive year.
05:26But they knew their season would be defined by just one point.
05:30And that was ending the Cowboys' reign atop the NFC.
05:35That season really was about getting ready to play the Cowboys in championship game in January
05:40and go in the Super Bowl.
05:41That was the only reason we showed up in training camp.
05:43It wasn't to play the Falcons.
05:44It wasn't to play the Saints.
05:46It was to play the Cowboys in January.
05:57He didn't grow up a 49ers fan because in those days, the 49ers were a team no one could love.
06:05In 1973 through 1981, the 49ers had just one winning season.
06:12I remember my parents got a 49er jacket for my brother, and my mom tried to get him to wear
06:17it to school, and he cried.
06:18And she said, why don't you want to wear your 49er jacket?
06:21And he said, because they're losers.
06:24And that was it.
06:25That was what I grew up around in the 49ers.
06:27And then all of a sudden, in 81, they won the Super Bowl championship.
06:31In 84, they came back and did it again.
06:33So by the time I joined the 49ers in 87, there was an expectation that this was a win it
06:40all or don't even show up.
06:43Jones was signed by the 49ers as a free agent.
06:46In 1987, he went to training camp as a backup to Pro Bowl tight end Russ Francis.
06:53When I came to camp the next year, I was so excited because Tom Rathman was one of my good
06:58buddies.
06:58And we had it all set up.
07:00We were going to room together two days before camp.
07:02And Mike Holmgren called me, and he said, you're going to room with Steve Young.
07:05I said, Coach, no, you don't understand.
07:07I've got this all set up.
07:09Tom Rathman's my roommate.
07:09And he said, no, you're going to room with Steve Young.
07:11I said, Coach, no, me and Rathman, we have it all figured out.
07:14I'm bringing the refrigerator.
07:15He's bringing the TV.
07:16And he said, I don't think you get it.
07:18I'm telling you, you are rooming with Steve Young.
07:23And we got to know each other over the next couple weeks.
07:25I was a guy that wanted to become a starter.
07:29And obviously, he did as well.
07:31But he was behind Hall of Fame quarterback and just kind of sitting there biding his time.
07:35Young stepped in and led the league in passing.
07:38In 1993, the 49ers made the choice that Young would be their quarterback.
07:43And they traded the 37-year-old Montana to Kansas City.
07:48Montana still believed he was the better quarterback.
07:50And one year later, he would get his chance to prove it.
07:56It was week two of the 1994 season.
07:59I had to go to Arrowhead and play the Chiefs.
08:03But the emotions of the first Joe Montana versus Steve Young showdown were obvious, even in pregame warm-ups.
08:11I still can't believe they just didn't go shake hands and act like big boys.
08:15But they're two great competitors.
08:17And I'm sure that Steve looked at Joe to see if Joe was acknowledging him.
08:22And I'm sure at the time, Joe wasn't.
08:24And so Steve didn't want to take that first step and go over there.
08:27I guess to Steve, Joe was saying, hey, game on.
08:31Joe Montana had played in many big games.
08:35But this one had special meaning.
08:37He was playing against a team he led to four world championships.
08:41And against a man who replaced him.
08:45When Montana performed his magic on the 49ers,
08:49cheering wasn't limited to Kansas City.
08:54In the Bay Area sports bars,
08:57fans made it clear that Montana was still their favorite son.
09:04Ah, get the balls.
09:06Get the balls.
09:07Imagine the jock riding you have to do to cheer for another player against your own team.
09:19Look, I love Lamar Jackson, right?
09:22If he leaves the Ravens, I'm not going to cheer for him to beat the Ravens.
09:27I will cheer for him any other week.
09:31But I'm not going to cheer for him to beat the Ravens.
09:35That's bogeous.
09:36You have to be a fan of your team first.
09:39That's just jock riding, bro.
09:41Get the testicles.
09:46Joe had won four Super Bowls.
09:48And when you win a Super Bowl,
09:49you get emotionally cemented.
09:52So when we went in 94,
09:54we'd been beaten by the Cowboys twice in champion.
09:56We didn't want to win.
09:56Joe had won four.
09:57He got traded as Kansas City.
09:59Emotionally, I think there's a lot of people in the Bears,
10:01like, they went with him.
10:03You can't beat Joe, baby!
10:05You can't beat Joe!
10:08For San Francisco,
10:10four of the five starters on the offensive line were sized.
10:16Steve Young had no protection.
10:19And no chance.
10:21Eric Thomas and Smith, too, killed him.
10:25They just killed him.
10:27I'm surprised they didn't have to do CPR on Steve Young.
10:30They killed him.
10:37Look at that.
10:41It was a painful loss.
10:44Especially for Steve Young.
10:46It was once again eclipsed by the legend of Joe Montana.
10:51I felt a sense of sadness for Steve.
10:54Because he had to tolerate the questions of,
10:58well, you couldn't beat Joe in Kansas City.
11:01You couldn't do this.
11:02You can't do that.
11:03Who needs that type of negativity?
11:07I felt like I was the apprentice that learned.
11:09He was the master.
11:10And we've both kind of gone on and played some great football.
11:13But in the end, there are some comparisons.
11:15And I've got to fight on with that, too,
11:18because that's a heck of a thing.
11:20He's, in many ways,
11:21one of the greatest as far as winning Super Bowls, four.
11:24You know?
11:24I ain't got to get there yet.
11:25I mean, it's tough to constantly have that going on,
11:29but that's kind of...
11:30Through the first month of the 1994 season,
11:34the 49ers were 3-1.
11:36But Young was sacked a dozen times in those four games.
11:41The problems on the offensive line
11:43reached a crisis point in Week 5 against Philadelphia.
11:46The Eagles embarrassed the 49ers
11:48by opening a 23-0 first-half lead.
11:53In the third quarter,
11:54with the game out of reach
11:56and Young being slammed to the turf on every play,
11:59Coach George Seifert changed quarterbacks
12:02in the middle of a series.
12:05And Gerbeck is going in the game
12:07for Steve Young right now.
12:08How about that?
12:09I don't know.
12:10I bet you Steve doesn't like it.
12:12I think his coach gets worried about him
12:14with a score of 33-8.
12:15The way he's getting hit,
12:16who can blame him?
12:18I felt like he was saying,
12:20yeah, everyone got beat up,
12:22but you,
12:23you are,
12:24it's your fault.
12:25And I thought,
12:26for me,
12:27for all the crap that I'd been through
12:29for all those years,
12:30and you're going to trot the quarterback out
12:32to replace me,
12:34then trot out,
12:35you know,
12:36J.J. Stokes to take Jerry's place.
12:37I mean,
12:37trot someone else out with him.
12:39But me,
12:40I think I just basically broke.
12:42And I went out of the sidelines.
12:44I was looking for a fist fight.
12:46I wasn't going to just have an argument.
12:47I was looking to have a fist fight.
12:49And I was going to have it with George Sievert.
12:52So I started saying things
12:54and emoting things
12:55that I'm surprised
12:56that he didn't turn around and fight me.
13:00If I were him,
13:01I would have turned around
13:02and fought me.
13:03I've never seen him like this.
13:05I mean,
13:06you know,
13:06everyone is
13:06trying to calm him down
13:08and he's just not buying it.
13:15It was obvious to me
13:16I should take him out of the ballgame.
13:18If I didn't handle it
13:20to everybody's liking,
13:22it's because I don't have
13:23a lot of experience.
13:24Oh, man, I'm good.
13:25Yeah, that's Gary Kubiak,
13:27quarterback coach.
13:28Situation.
13:30And I sure hope to hell
13:31that I don't gain any.
13:34You don't want to hear
13:37rational explanations.
13:38You don't want to hear,
13:39and especially one
13:41we're afraid of for you.
13:43Well, I don't want to hear that.
13:45I would much rather
13:47beat myself to a pulp
13:48trying to get back
13:50into that game
13:50than say,
13:51well, let's go to next week.
13:54Now, watch Steve Young here.
13:56He's saying to Brent Jones,
13:58he said,
13:58do you believe that?
14:01After the game,
14:01I remember talking to him.
14:02I said,
14:03bro,
14:05what's your problem?
14:06Hey, you're trying
14:07to make it about me.
14:07You're still fired up.
14:08And, you know,
14:10finally the next day,
14:11he's semi-calmed down.
14:13But really,
14:14it kind of galvanized
14:15the guys behind Steve.
14:17There was a lot of guys
14:18that said,
14:19hey, wait a second.
14:20This guy's got
14:21some fight to him.
14:22I like that guy.
14:23I want a guy
14:24that's not afraid
14:25to tell George Seifert
14:26to jump in the lake.
14:28The funny thing
14:29about the whole event
14:30from my teammates' standpoint
14:31was suddenly,
14:32I was this fiery leader.
14:34And I almost,
14:35I wanted to go home
14:36and throw up
14:37and think about,
14:37are you kidding me?
14:38For all these years
14:39I've been out here battling
14:39and I had to yell at my coach
14:41and now you're like
14:41ready to follow me?
14:43But it taught me
14:44the vital lesson of football.
14:46Perception
14:47is reality.
14:49If you're perceived
14:50to be something,
14:50you might as well be it
14:51because that's the truth
14:53in people's minds.
14:55The following week
14:56we were in Detroit
14:57and if anything
14:58was going to give us
14:59a wake-up call
15:00it was a Philadelphia game.
15:01We started that Detroit game
15:03every bit as miserably
15:05as we started
15:06the Philadelphia game.
15:08The Lions and Barry Sanders
15:10jumped to a quick
15:1114-0 lead.
15:13That put the pressure
15:14on Steve Young
15:15and a reeling 49ers offense.
15:18I remember it being
15:19one of the tougher games
15:20I ever played.
15:21And I had left
15:22four or five pounds
15:23in Kansas City
15:23already three weeks before.
15:26Look out.
15:28Young throws
15:28under great pressure.
15:29This time he gets hit
15:30and Young's hurt a little bit.
15:33Man alive.
15:45I have a vivid
15:46barely get up.
15:48He can barely move
15:49and I remember
15:50looking up at the scoreboard
15:51and going
15:51where is this season going.
15:54This is the super team.
15:56We're a Super Bowl team.
15:57Is it all collapsing?
16:02Where the Philadelphia game
16:03was a watershed event
16:05emotionally,
16:06Detroit game
16:07was a culmination
16:09of rising up
16:09out of that
16:10and saying
16:11we'll do what
16:12we need to do
16:13even if it means
16:14even if it means
16:14crawling back
16:14on the field
16:16get bandaged up
16:17and getting back
16:18out there.
16:19Young had a pinched nerve
16:21in his leg
16:22but he returned
16:23to the game
16:24and began beating
16:25the Detroit Blitz
16:26with short passes
16:26to the backs
16:27and Brent Jones.
16:31two touchdowns
16:32by rookie
16:32William Floyd
16:33put the 49ers
16:34ahead in the third
16:35quarter
16:35as they scored
16:3527 unanswered points.
16:40The Detroit game
16:41saved our season.
16:42Coming back
16:43in that game
16:44and getting us
16:44going again
16:45on the field
16:47not yelling at the coach
16:48or what the media
16:48was saying
16:49or locker
16:49on the field
16:50that's where
16:52we transitioned
16:53to a pretty tough
16:54ball club that year.
16:54It would be disappointing
16:56they were down
16:5624-0
16:57to the Lions.
17:01Or 21-0
17:02to the Lions.
17:06The flashy new image
17:08of the 1994 49ers
17:10was epitomized
17:11by cornerback
17:11Deion Sanders.
17:14On the field
17:15the man known as
17:17Primetime
17:17lived up to his reputation.
17:19Picked off!
17:21Sanders!
17:22Up to the right side!
17:23He's in the 50!
17:24He's in the 40!
17:26Into the middle
17:27of the field!
17:28He's high-step him!
17:29He's in the 10!
17:30He throws
17:31into the end zone!
17:33Deion Sanders
17:34interception
17:35to the ground!
17:37Off the field
17:38he wasn't at all
17:40what the 49ers expected.
17:43He's very quiet
17:45doesn't smoke
17:46doesn't drink
17:47just
17:48just basically
17:49really good people.
17:51I describe him
17:52as the type of person
17:52you sit out on the porch.
17:53Sanders is really a lead.
17:54Deion Sanders
17:55when he's playing a sport.
17:57I mean
17:58well
17:58Neon Deion
18:00Deion Sanders
18:01is just
18:01you know
18:01a good guy.
18:03George
18:03you grab your pitcher
18:04lemonade
18:04and you sit out
18:05and you talk about life
18:07and that's not
18:08the Deion Sanders
18:09that most people
18:10have an image of
18:12but that's the type
18:13of person
18:13but that's the type of person
18:14that he was
18:14to the locker room.
18:16Deion did have
18:17a pre-game dressing ritual
18:19that took some
18:19getting used to.
18:22Looks like a chalk line
18:23body laying out
18:25and I'm like
18:26what is this?
18:28From then forward
18:30I always made sure
18:31I had to scooch
18:31my little stool chair
18:33over just a little bit
18:34to make sure
18:34Deion had a room
18:35to lay his socks
18:37and his pants out.
18:38Hilarious.
18:40In week 7
18:41the 4 and 2 49ers
18:43were in Atlanta.
18:44Deion was facing
18:45his former team
18:46the Falcons
18:49and he silenced
18:50the fans
18:50by making the biggest
18:51defensive play
18:52of the game.
18:54Backpedaling
18:54goes George
18:55and he throws
18:57intercepted
18:58and the infounds
18:59Deion
18:59down the right side
19:00yes
19:01he's to the 50
19:02they can't stop him
19:03he can high step
19:04this one
19:05half the field
19:06he waits to the 10
19:07though
19:07and walks
19:08into the end zone
19:09does another dance
19:11touchdown 49ers
19:13and the entire
19:1449er team
19:15has gone to the end zone
19:17to say hello
19:17to Deion.
19:19I know Atlanta
19:20didn't think
19:21Jeff George
19:22was going to get
19:24payback on
19:25the 49ers.
19:27Sanders was one
19:28of seven new starters
19:29on the San Francisco
19:30defense in 1994.
19:32The improvement
19:33was obvious.
19:36the 49ers
19:37forced 35 turnovers
19:39and returned
19:40five of them
19:41for touchdowns.
19:44Adding Sanders
19:45helped the 49ers
19:46in another way.
19:48It allowed
19:49Merton Hanks
19:50number 36
19:51to move from
19:51cornerback
19:52to his natural
19:53position of free safety.
20:02Hanks had dreams
20:03of playing pro football
20:04ever since he was
20:05a youngster
20:06growing up in Dallas.
20:08His family
20:08lived just down
20:09the street
20:09from the Cowboys
20:10practice facility.
20:12We had a number
20:13of the Cowboys
20:14in our neighborhood.
20:16Tony Dorsett
20:18at Two Tall Jones.
20:21Mr. Newhouse
20:22I always called him
20:23Mr. Newhouse
20:23Robert Newhouse
20:24lived right
20:26on the road
20:27that I would have
20:27to travel
20:28to get to
20:28my middle school.
20:30So I've got
20:30to see a side
20:31of them
20:31other than
20:32them grabbing
20:33the Gatorade
20:34on Sundays.
20:37The shadow
20:38of the Dallas Cowboys
20:39followed Merton Hanks
20:40to San Francisco.
20:42In week 11
20:43the defending
20:44Super Bowl champions
20:45had the NFL's
20:46best record
20:46at 8-1.
20:49The 49ers
20:51with their
20:51rebuilt defense
20:52were 7-2.
20:57By that time
20:58we had settled
20:59ourselves.
21:00We had a
21:02good bit
21:03of confidence
21:04rolling.
21:04It was the
21:05perfect time
21:06for us
21:06to play the Cavaliers.
21:08Troy Aikman
21:09had not thrown
21:09an interception
21:10in 97 attempts
21:11coming into the game.
21:13But on the Cowboys
21:14first red zone
21:15possession
21:16Merton Hanks
21:17ended Aikman's
21:18streak
21:18and the Dallas
21:19scoring threat.
21:21The ball
21:21is tipped up
21:22and intercepted.
21:23Hanks
21:23in the 5-yard line
21:24tries to come back
21:25the other way
21:26and is dropped
21:26by Darryl Johnson.
21:28Great play
21:28by Merton Hanks.
21:34The 49ers
21:35first touchdown
21:35came when
21:36Jerry Rice
21:36beat Larry Brown.
21:4010 months
21:41earlier
21:41claimed to own
21:42him.
21:43Back to throw
21:44is young
21:44and he sends
21:45it way down
21:46the left
21:46sideline
21:46for Rice.
21:47Jerry makes it
21:48good.
21:48He gets to the
21:49end zone.
21:50Touchdown
21:5049ers!
21:51Yeah
21:52Larry Brown
21:53really owned
21:54Jerry Rice
22:02In the 4th quarter
22:04Dallas was driving
22:05for the tie
22:06but once again
22:07Merton Hanks
22:08made the big play.
22:11pass over the middle
22:12picked off
22:13Merton Hanks
22:14has another
22:14interception
22:16and Merton Hanks
22:17can run
22:17for governor
22:18at least in the
22:19Northern California
22:20mode with his game
22:21today.
22:22This is a big game
22:23the entire country
22:25is watching
22:25and they're getting
22:25to see about
22:26Merton Hanks
22:27what we've known
22:28for a long time
22:29this guy can play.
22:32That was just
22:33a fun day.
22:35Always fun
22:35to play against
22:36your hometown team
22:38always fun
22:38to come up
22:39with plays
22:40that frustrate
22:40great opponents
22:42and I was just
22:43proud to be
22:45a part of that.
22:51Hanks gave the ball
22:52back to the offense
22:53and the 49ers
22:54called a play
22:54that would work
22:55for them all day
22:56the bootleg option.
23:05Coming into the huddle
23:06I get goosebumps
23:07just thinking about it
23:08because you know
23:09if we execute this
23:11this is going to be
23:12a touchdown
23:13and it's going to be
23:14game over.
23:15Yon throws
23:16he gets it to Brent Jones
23:17into the end zone
23:18touchdown 49ers
23:22bootleg pass to Brent Jones
23:23putting the game away.
23:27It was like
23:28yeah we got these
23:30suckers
23:30and I remember
23:31just spiking that ball
23:33as hard as I could
23:34and Steve's running
23:35around the field
23:36dancing
23:36I don't know
23:37what he's doing
23:37doing the number
23:38one sign
23:38I mean you know
23:39the intensity
23:40of that game
23:41and it's like
23:41we need to beat
23:42these Cowboys
23:42I know Steve
23:43Young
23:45thought Steve Young
23:46needed to beat
23:47the Cowboys
23:47look at the reaction
23:49by Steve Young
23:50he has exorcised
23:52some demons here
23:53this afternoon
23:54he has got rid
23:56of some things
23:57on his shoulders
24:00he's got it
24:0120-15-10-5
24:03touchdown 49ers
24:05Jerry Rice
24:07is the touchdown
24:08scorer
24:09of the century
24:12Rice also set
24:13a career high
24:14with 112 receptions
24:18Brent Jones
24:19led all tight ends
24:20in touchdowns
24:22Young after a play fake
24:23drops back to throw
24:24left side
24:25Brent Jones
24:25he should get there
24:26nine
24:27he tumbles
24:28into the end zone
24:29touchdown 49ers
24:33Ricky Waters
24:34led all running backs
24:35in receiving yards
24:41Steve Young
24:42set a franchise record
24:43with 35 touchdown passes
24:47and his quarterback rating
24:48was the highest
24:49in NFL history
24:49topping the mark
24:51set by Joe Montana
24:57the 49ers won
24:5810 games in a row
24:59after the humiliating
25:00loss to Philadelphia
25:02their 13-3 record
25:04was the best
25:04in the NFC
25:07after the final
25:08regular season game
25:09Steve Young
25:10delivered what became
25:11known as the
25:1139-day speech
25:18he reminded his teammates
25:19it was 39 days
25:20until the Super Bowl
25:23for the 49ers
25:24the real season
25:25was just beginning
25:28my point was
25:29whatever it takes
25:30from this moment on
25:32every minute
25:33that you're awake
25:34and even the minutes
25:35that you're asleep
25:35make them count
25:36because we have
25:37one thing in mind
25:38you know
25:38on the practice field
25:39at night
25:40at home
25:41whatever you do
25:42every minute
25:43it's going to be
25:43about making sure
25:43that the Super Bowl
25:44happens
25:56a team that started
25:57the 1994 season
25:58with so many new faces
26:00and new personalities
26:01now had one focus
26:04and one emotional leader
26:09Steve Young
26:10put the 49ers mission
26:11into words
26:13and in the playoff
26:14opener against Chicago
26:15his teammates
26:16put it into action
26:22someone pushed me late
26:23and you had four guys
26:25just ready to fight
26:27not like hey
26:28don't do that
26:29but hey
26:29we're fighting
26:30we're fighting right now
26:32as a teammate
26:33you just lose your mind
26:34that guy's messing
26:35with your Super Bowl ring
26:36and so we went
26:38right after him
26:40and football is
26:41you know
26:42the mosaic law
26:43you know
26:43it's eye for an eye
26:44and the way it works
26:45in championship form
26:46is when it's
26:47mosaic law
26:48now
26:48right now
26:49we're going to fix this
26:50you can see the reaction
26:51of the team
26:52this is our guy
26:53this is where we're going
26:54get out of our way
26:55and here are the last
26:58six possessions
26:59of San Francisco
27:00touchdown
27:00touchdown
27:01touchdown
27:02field goal
27:02touchdown
27:03touchdown
27:05don't mess
27:06don't mess with the
27:08Niners
27:08this is their house
27:15Niners postseason
27:16went like this
27:1744 points
27:1838 points
27:1949 points
27:20that's
27:2344 points
27:24a game
27:27MVPs
27:27and all my
27:28passing titles
27:29and all my
27:29all that stuff
27:31you know
27:31and you can pack
27:32it in a little tiny bag
27:33and take it back
27:34to Utah
27:34you know what I mean
27:35it ain't gonna
27:36it really doesn't matter
27:37but if you win
27:39a Super Bowl
27:39that little tiny bag
27:41that you've been
27:41carrying around
27:42becomes a Hall of Fame bag
27:43there are very few
27:45times in your life
27:46I believe
27:47that you can honestly
27:48say everything
27:49that you've ever
27:50worked for
27:50has come to
27:51this moment
27:52right here
27:53right now
27:54what are you
27:54gonna do
27:55going forward
27:56the guys
27:57that had
27:58experienced
27:58the prior two
28:00losses
28:03I think felt it
28:04more than anybody
28:05else
28:07the enthusiasm
28:08that they had
28:09for the game
28:10and the feel
28:11good attitude
28:12it made you
28:13laugh
28:13it made you
28:14say
28:14can you believe
28:16those guys
28:16and just
28:18that
28:18kind of
28:19takes the
28:19pressure
28:23the 49ers
28:24spent an entire
28:24year waiting
28:25for this game
28:29this opponent
28:32and this
28:33moment
28:36back to throw
28:36again is Aikman
28:37some pressure
28:38gets the pass
28:39away
28:39Eric Davis
28:40picks it off
28:40he's got a
28:41line down the
28:42left side
28:42but he can't
28:43fly
28:44touchdown
28:4449ers
28:47three Dallas
28:48turnovers
28:48led to three
28:4949ers
28:49touchdowns
28:50all in a span
28:52of seven minutes
29:01what were
29:02fumbles
29:03and what
29:03were not
29:03fumbles
29:04were so
29:05iffy back
29:06in the
29:0720th century
29:07that was not
29:08a fumble
29:09I don't think
29:09he had
29:09possession
29:33it was the most
29:37remarkable
29:37sequence
29:38you saw
29:41a team
29:42that was so
29:43prepared
29:43so focused
29:44and so ready
29:45to play
29:46just come out
29:48and attack
29:48the Cowboys
29:51the Cowboys
29:52cut the lead
29:53to ten
29:53points
29:54but with
29:55just eight
29:55seconds
29:55remaining
29:56in the
29:56first half
29:57Steve Young
29:58and Jerry
29:58Rice put
29:59the game
29:59out of
30:00reach
30:04goes back
30:05to throw
30:05goes for
30:06the end
30:06zone
30:06Rice is
30:07out there
30:08touchdown
30:0949ers
30:09Rice
30:10and Larry
30:11Brown
30:27that was all
30:28that separated
30:29Steve Young
30:29and the 49ers
30:30from their goal
30:31a victory
30:32over the team
30:33that had
30:33embarrassed them
30:34each of the
30:34previous two years
30:38Young scored
30:39the final
30:39touchdown
30:40fighting for
30:41the last
30:42three yards
30:43in what
30:44had been
30:44a long
30:45uphill climb
30:54it was like
30:55putting a flag
30:56on the top
30:56of Everest
30:57Dallas
30:58had gone
30:58down
30:59and
31:02get out
31:03of my way
31:04because I'm
31:05running around
31:07and I'm
31:08saying hello
31:09to everybody
31:22the same
31:23people that
31:24said Joe
31:25is the man
31:26and that's
31:26never going
31:26to change
31:27I think
31:28suddenly said
31:28it's all
31:29right
31:29Steve can
31:31do it
31:31and Joe
31:32can do it
31:32and we're
31:32all good
31:33because we're
31:33from San
31:34Francisco
31:34and we're
31:3449er fans
31:35it was as
31:35if everyone's
31:37heart grew
31:37enough to
31:38circle both
31:39of us
31:39and I
31:40still remember
31:40the moment
31:41it was like
31:41I traveled to
31:42Phil and
31:42everybody
31:42I think
31:43everybody's
31:43even yelling
31:44it
31:44we're with
31:45you
31:45you know
31:46it's like
31:46everybody
31:46kind of let
31:47it go
31:47early in the
31:48year in Philadelphia
31:49my teammates
31:49did
31:49later in the
31:50year I think
31:51the fans did
31:51and finally
31:52we were all
31:52one
31:53during the
31:54five-year span
31:55of the
31:56Cowboys
31:5749ers
31:58Packers
31:5892
31:5996
32:00where
32:03the real
32:05NFC
32:05the real
32:06Super Bowl
32:06was the
32:07NFC
32:07championship
32:08game
32:08Chargers
32:10had no
32:10chance
32:16oh man
32:17just listen
32:18and check
32:18check
32:19check
32:19check
32:19we'd run
32:20through
32:21you know
32:21300 plays
32:22and then he'd
32:23go okay
32:24you're ready
32:25to play
32:27and so I
32:27did
32:28the Super Bowl
32:29he goes
32:30you know what
32:31one more time
32:32and so we
32:33literally
32:33and it was
32:34getting late
32:34we had a
32:35timing thing
32:35you know
32:36it's like
32:36look okay
32:36one more time
32:37we went
32:37through it
32:38he turned
32:39to me
32:39he says
32:39we're gonna
32:40kill
33:14this is how
33:15confident Mike
33:16would be
33:17he would say
33:17this is a touchdown
33:19play right here
33:19if we get in
33:20this situation
33:21we'll call this
33:21this will be a
33:22touchdown
33:22and darn if
33:23those things
33:23just didn't
33:24happen
33:24young with a
33:25play fake
33:26grabs back
33:26to throw
33:27deep middle
33:27waters and
33:28right
33:28over the
33:29shoulder
33:29catch
33:32oh what a
33:33man
33:33a spectacular
33:35touchdown catch
33:36by Ricky
33:37Waters
33:3751 yard
33:39touchdown play
33:45they ran
33:46into a bus
33:46on that day
33:47and the bus
33:48saw being a
33:48Mike Shanahan
33:49led offense
33:50those quick
33:51scores really
33:52set the table
33:57I think the
33:58look in their
33:59eyes was
34:03we can't
34:04stop them
34:05young
34:05young
34:05straight back
34:06drop
34:06foot pass
34:07left
34:07flat
34:07Ricky
34:07Waters
34:08makes the
34:08catch
34:08he's in
34:09touchdown
34:0949ers
34:10young
34:12has got
34:12four touchdown
34:13passes
34:13we're in the
34:14first half
34:14holy smokes
34:20back to throw
34:21is young
34:22drills it
34:23across the
34:23middle
34:23catch by
34:24rice
34:24feeds the
34:25defender on
34:26the play
34:26touchdown
34:2749ers
34:28the fifth
34:29touchdown pass
34:30of the game
34:31by Steve
34:31Young
34:32tied in with
34:33Joe Montana
34:33for the most
34:34in Super Bowl
34:35history
34:35Mike Shanahan
34:37and I wanted
34:38to make a
34:38statement
34:38about the
34:4049ers
34:40yeah we've
34:42been to Super
34:42Bowl before
34:42but you've
34:43never seen
34:44this one
34:45before
34:59Mike Shanahan
35:00at the end
35:00of the game
35:00was upset
35:01because it
35:01was only
35:02six touchdown
35:02passes
35:03because he
35:03wanted eight
35:04you want to
35:05know why I
35:05love that guy
35:06because he
35:06was at
35:0749
35:08not nearly
35:08enough
35:10and Steve
35:12Young led
35:13the game
35:13in rushing
35:13also
35:14Young
35:15passed
35:15for
35:16325
35:16yards
35:18he also
35:18finished
35:19as the
35:19game's
35:19leading
35:20rusher
35:21he was
35:22the best
35:22player
35:23on the
35:23field
35:24and
35:25the most
35:26elated
35:30I clearly
35:31knew the
35:31pressure
35:31that Steve
35:32dealt with
35:33whether it
35:33was Joe
35:34Montana
35:34whether it
35:35was winning
35:35a Super
35:36Bowl
35:37whether it
35:37was beating
35:37the Cowboys
35:39but for him
35:40to actually
35:40publicly
35:41acknowledge
35:43a monkey
35:44on his
35:44back
35:44was even
35:45surprising
35:46for me
35:47someone
35:47take the
35:48monkey
35:48off
35:48my
35:49back
35:49please
35:49I was having
35:55fun and
35:56everyone was
35:56talking about my
35:57monkey on my back
35:57for so many years
35:58that was like
35:58seemed funny
36:00and I regret it
36:01because it sent
36:01the wrong message
36:02for how I looked
36:03at the opportunity
36:04that I had
36:06this is a tremendous
36:07opportunity being
36:08taught by one of the
36:09greatest coaches of
36:09all time
36:10one of the greatest
36:10players of all time
36:11by a series of players
36:12that are going to be
36:13Hall of Fame players
36:14you're going to train
36:15to be great
36:16now go see how good
36:18you can get
36:22it actually worked out
36:24I got to see how good
36:25I could get
36:25it was a tremendous
36:26opportunity
36:27not like
36:27oh the burdens
36:29lifted
36:29and I think that's why
36:30I feel the way
36:31I do
36:33the game was won
36:35the mission was complete
36:38the 49ers were once again
36:39the champions of professional
36:40football
36:43and this time
36:44they made even
36:45bigger splash
36:48I'm delighted
36:49that George Seifert
36:50has made it clear
36:51to his team
36:52I don't want that
36:54goofy Gatorade back
36:55don't even think about it
36:58George
36:59he was very
37:01specific
37:02about saying
37:03hey I do not want
37:05to be wet
37:05do not hit me
37:06with any water
37:07I don't want this
37:08to happen
37:10we made sure
37:10it happened anyway
37:12uh oh
37:14George's rule
37:14is about to be broken
37:19it was kind of
37:20the last flouting
37:21of George's rule
37:22set for the year
37:24you can't get away
37:25with a whole lot
37:26with these young guys
37:27he's got on the team now
37:28William Floyd
37:29said most people
37:30William Floyd
37:31and Ricky Waters
37:32are down there
37:32with him now
37:33you know
37:33saying hey hey
37:34come on
37:35it's okay
37:35it's okay
37:35hey listen now
37:40Super Bowl 29
37:42has come to a completion
37:44the San Francisco 49ers
37:46are the first team
37:47to win
37:48five Super Bowl championships
37:52I remember the elation
37:54for all of us
37:55of finally completing
37:57the journey
37:57of winning
37:58the world's championship
37:59you really didn't want
38:00to leave the field
38:01I felt like I was
38:02a little teeny boppy
38:03at a little rock star
38:04concert
38:05and I wanted to pick up
38:06part of the field
38:07and take it with me
38:08just to say I was there
38:10I got the coronation
38:11that's not to make light
38:12of the charges
38:13it's just
38:13how it played out
38:15for us
38:16for Steve Young
38:17there were no more critics
38:19and no more questions
38:22with his performance
38:23in Super Bowl 29
38:24he took his place
38:25alongside the greatest
38:26big game quarterbacks
38:27in NFL history
38:38every guy in here
38:39every guy in here
38:40made a commitment
38:40you know you did
38:42there were times
38:43when it was dark
38:43it was really dark
38:44and we turned back
38:45and hurt each other's face
38:46and committed to each other
38:47you knew we had to do it
38:49this way
38:49this is the greatest feeling
38:50in the world
38:51is it not
38:5239 days
38:54hey I share this
38:55with every one of you guys
38:57everyone in this room
38:58made a commitment
38:58and we're there
38:59and no one can ever
39:00ever
39:01take it away from us
39:03ever
39:07in the NFL
39:07because so many people
39:08focus on the league
39:09and the game
39:10especially quarterbacks
39:11no matter what happens
39:13you have a thousand things
39:14on why you're no good
39:15and why you can't do it
39:16and everyone lists them
39:17oh he can't win the big game
39:19oh he can't win the chance
39:19oh he can't lead a team
39:21in two minutes
39:22oh he can't
39:23it's like
39:23the nature of the game
39:25the cynics win
39:27the day
39:28most of the time
39:29so you end up
39:30responding to it
39:31because it's the nature
39:32of who you are
39:32as an athlete
39:33you say I can't do it
39:35I'm going to prove you wrong
39:37and I'm going to use that
39:38as incentive
39:39to actually go achieve something
39:41yeah I have inner strength
39:43to go achieve it
39:44but you know what
39:44you're getting me
39:44a little bit more salt
39:45alright
39:46I want more
39:47because you're
39:47and who are you
39:49well it's a guy
39:50that wrote something
39:51it's a guy in the street
39:52it's a guy on the radio
39:53it's a guy
39:53you know
39:54it's your uncle Bill
39:55that's been a long time
39:56cowboy fan
39:57you're sick of hearing from him
39:59you know it's just
39:59it's everybody
40:01they is everyone
40:02who kind of loves sports
40:03and sports is about
40:04kind of putting challenges
40:05out there
40:06for things that you can't do
40:07and then you go
40:08knock them down
40:09well what's the next
40:09mountain I'm climbing
40:10what's the next thing you do
40:11and so suddenly
40:12you have the Super Bowl trophy
40:13in your hand
40:15100 million people
40:16said he couldn't do it
40:21about 83 million
40:22of those people
40:24had to watch him do it
40:26they
40:27what are they gonna say
40:29what
40:29what are you gonna do
40:30I'm a Super Bowl champion
40:32just sit down
40:33and relax
40:34because you're gonna
40:34take a day off
40:35tomorrow
40:36there's nothing gonna be said
40:37now the day after tomorrow
40:38you can say that he can't repeat
40:40he can't
40:40but today
40:43this is it
40:43no more
40:44you know what
40:45I get 24 hours of quiet
40:47and today
40:48you
40:48need to sit down
