01:00The Dallas Cowboys achieved the height of their popularity in the 1970s when they became
01:05known as America's team.
01:07But by 1988, America's team had become the worst team in the NFL.
01:14That season marked the end of an era, Tom Landry's 29-year run as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.
01:22And we lost so much that season.
01:24We lost, and I would cry after every loss.
01:28We just kept losing and losing and losing.
01:31And it seemed to me like everybody was okay with it.
01:35I would cry, guys would walk by and say, hey, don't worry about it.
01:38Pick up the check Tuesday.
01:39Clearly, the culture in Dallas needed to change.
01:43And on February 25, 1989, Arkansas businessman Jerry Jones purchased the Cowboys from Bumbright.
01:51He promised to rebuild America's team.
01:54I just want to say this.
01:57There is no substitute for winning.
02:00I know that's a cliche, but we must win.
02:03We will win.
02:06Win is the name of the game.
02:09Jones dismissed Landry, a very unpopular move at the time, and replaced him with former college teammate, Jimmy Johnson.
02:18Landry had been so successful for so many years, I don't think anybody considered there being a life after Tom
02:25Landry.
02:26I know that there could have been better circumstances as far as me coming into this position.
02:34But I would hope that people would be as excited about this organization, about this football team, as what I
02:41am.
02:42Johnson had never coached at the pro level.
02:44But he won a college championship with the Miami Hurricanes in 1988.
02:50His star receiver at Miami was number 47, Michael Irvin.
02:55I had won a championship with Jimmy Johnson.
02:58So, Jimmy did call me and say to me, I'm coming into Dallas.
03:03I pulled out that list of everybody that told me, don't worry about it as long as you pick up
03:08the check.
03:09And I said, Jimmy, he has to go.
03:11He has to go.
03:12He's not here to win.
03:13He's not here to win.
03:14I knew once we made that change, things would change.
03:18What about Esco, Michael?
03:23The problem for Johnson was that the team he inherited simply wasn't very good.
03:28Welcome to Valley Red.
03:30Welcome to Valley Red.
03:59Johnson tried to recruit Aikman out of high school, and then again two years later when Aikman decided to transfer
04:05from Oklahoma.
04:06Both times Johnson failed.
04:09After turning Jimmy Johnson down twice, I have no choice in this one if they select me.
04:14And I didn't know how bad the Cowboys were, and I didn't know how good Jimmy ultimately was.
04:20I just knew that, man, this thing keeps coming back.
04:24I guess it's just fate.
04:25I'm going to play for Jimmy Johnson.
04:27That summer, Aikman got his first glimpse of life under Jimmy Johnson.
04:37So we showed up for that last camp, and we had a running test.
04:41And one of our players, one of our young players, had asthma and made it through about halfway through the
04:48running drill.
04:49Somebody get to the NFL with asthma.
04:50And just collapsed.
04:51And Jimmy said he could never win with a guy that's not conditioned because he used to always say, fatigue
04:57will make a coward of you.
04:59And so Jimmy, who was really on a tirade that entire day anyway, got in this guy's face and wanted
05:05to know what the problem was.
05:06You know, he'd had three or four months to prepare for this running test, and the young player said that
05:11he had asthma.
05:13And Jimmy quickly directed him over to the asthma field, and he never played a snap for the Dallas Cowboys.
05:18He kind of made us all feel like if we didn't do our job, that someone else was going to
05:23do it for us.
05:24Get some run support now.
05:25Is that you, huh, Kenny?
05:26Yeah.
05:27Working down.
05:28Start filling those lanes a little bit.
05:30Yeah, I've got to change my footwork now.
05:32Oh, you'll get it.
05:33He was like, I love you as long as you're making tackles.
05:35As soon as you stop making tackles, I don't love you anymore.
05:39You know?
05:40To Johnson, it was natural selection.
05:42The sick and the weak were left behind.
05:45And older veterans like Randy White and Danny White were forced to retire.
05:51The end result was a team high on enthusiasm but low on talent.
05:55A team that would lose 15 games in 1989.
05:59The rebuilding of America's team had just begun.
06:12They were finding their way, and they dropped their first five games.
06:27Jimmy Johnson realized his young team was going nowhere fast.
06:31So on October 13th, he and owner Jerry Jones made a move that would alter the course of the franchise.
06:38They traded their only Pro Bowl player, running back Herschel Walker.
06:45I find out that we had just traded the only guy that we had on our team that was really
06:50any good.
06:51And I couldn't believe it.
06:53I don't know what we're going to get, what players we're going to receive.
06:56I don't know where our offense is going right now or what you're going to see on Sunday.
07:01In return for Walker, the Cowboys received five journeyman players, but more importantly, seven high draft picks.
07:10One agent said it's the biggest trade he has ever seen in the NFL.
07:14As one owner said, it's a great train robbery.
07:19But whatever it is, we're happy with it.
07:22I couldn't understand it at the time.
07:24And I'm glad they viewed it differently because that certainly got us over the hump in a hurry.
07:30Walker accomplished little in two and a half seasons in Minnesota, while the Cowboys' bounty of draft picks became the
07:37foundation for a dynasty.
07:39In 1990, the first of those picks was used to select Walker's replacement, Emmitt Smith.
07:46And I remember the first walking in with MC Hammer type hands, and I thought, let me get this guy.
07:53I was like, man, this is a small guy.
07:56But when he took that football field, it was like he turned into Superman.
08:02He was an incredible talent.
08:05Let the mind control the body, not the body controlling the mind.
08:09Right, Emmitt?
08:10That's it.
08:12Johnson had a keen eye for talent, and his number one goal in the draft was to improve team speed.
08:17I got you there.
08:19Boom!
08:21All right.
08:22You know I'll let you do that.
08:25What we're really looking for is speed and quickness.
08:28Hunt, hunt!
08:31Going right there, back side.
08:32All right.
08:33Good job, next.
08:34Good quickness there.
08:35Good quickness.
08:37In just two years, the Cowboys were transformed from old and slow to young and fast.
08:42And they started to win.
08:44Harper got away.
08:45Down to the 10.
08:46He'll score.
08:47Yo, man.
08:49Speed.
08:50Unbelievable.
08:51Speed.
08:53Drop play.
08:54Smith up the middle.
08:55Bounces at the 10.
08:56To the 5.
08:57Cut to the right.
08:58Cut to the left.
08:58Oh, no.
09:00Evan Smith.
09:00Oh, yes.
09:02Yes.
09:04Unbelievable, Rod.
09:06The Cowboys went 7-9 in 1990, and Jimmy Johnson was named Coach of the Year.
09:1347 guys believing.
09:1647 guys hanging in there for four quarters.
09:20Hey, super, super job.
09:21Because you could have gotten down, you know, when they got on top of you, and you could have
09:25said, oh, here it goes again.
09:27But those days are over with.
09:29In 1991, Dallas improved to 11-5 and won a playoff game.
09:35All the pieces were in place for a Cowboys run in 1992.
09:40Emmett was driving home, I think.
09:43And he just called and said, I love you, man.
09:45And we are going to do this next year.
09:48And I said, yeah.
09:50Yes, we are.
09:52You know, the season's over.
09:54And everybody's ready to scatter and get away from football.
09:58And all we were thinking about, man, I can't wait to next year get started.
10:04There's no doubt we saw what we could be that early.
10:36Let's go 49ers.
10:38Cycle problems.
10:40He's crazy.
10:42Charles.
10:43Charles is crazy for real.
10:46You know.
10:46Hey, what you ought to do?
10:47You ought to call timeout?
10:49Don't doubt me, please.
10:51He'll walk up to you and kind of punch you.
10:53He'll grab you in your private area.
10:55You know.
10:56And just kind of pull you around.
10:59He just does things to aggravate you.
11:05The great thing about Charles Haley was that it didn't matter who you were.
11:09He was going to ride you pretty hard.
11:11You're a mother.
11:14And real money up on you is call you my.
11:18He wanted to see who could take it, who couldn't take it.
11:26And God forbid you showed any sign because he was going to be on you for the rest of the
11:30season.
11:31Hut, hut.
11:33Haley pushed the young Cowboys.
11:35And despite their youth, the team was relaxed and confident heading into the 92 season.
11:41Oh, Michael, two hands.
11:43Don't be cute.
11:44Don't be pretty.
11:45Be good.
11:46That's right.
11:47Two hands count the same as one hand.
11:49It was funny because, you know, most of the things you read, like Dallas may be a year away.
11:55And we're like, what are they talking about?
11:57If you went through the year virtually injury free and did not make the playoffs, would that be a crushing
12:02blow?
12:03It won't happen.
12:04We'll be in the playoffs.
12:07That swagger was tested on opening day against the defending champion Washington Redskins.
12:12I remember walking in and Jimmy would always talk about it, man.
12:16He said it many a times.
12:18When you're fighting a gorilla, you walk up to that gorilla and you bust him in the mouth.
12:24Hey, hut.
12:32They are going to rush the Kelly Cooper.
12:34How did they walk in the end zone?
12:36From the back of the end zone for a safety.
12:43In their first two games, the Cowboys defeated the Redskins and the Giants, the last two Super Bowl champions.
13:11Hey, a super job of believing, just like what we talked about in practice.
13:16When you ever go after a big gorilla, you don't ever hit him lightly.
13:21You hit him with everything you got.
13:26After beating the Beasts of the East, the Cowboys found it difficult to get up for the lowly Cardinals.
13:31That was before cornerback Lorenzo Lynch talked trash to Michael Irvin.
13:37This was little baby Arizona.
13:40We were ready to play, but Lynch really helped out a lot.
13:45We're going to get him.
13:47We're going to beat him up.
13:49He came walking by.
13:51Hey, Michael, what's up?
13:53What's up, man?
13:54I'm here.
13:54I'm going to be here all day.
13:56I'm going to be on you all day.
13:58And I was like, okay, Arizona's in town.
14:01Thank you for waking me up.
14:03I appreciate that.
14:05Second play of the game.
14:08Boop.
14:09Quick out.
14:09Throws the ball out.
14:10Nice catch.
14:11Irvin on the left side.
14:12He's taking it to the 25.
14:14I go 87 yards for a touchdown.
14:18And Irvin to the 25.
14:20And Irvin gets a block from the top to the 5.
14:22And Irvin goes 87 yards.
14:25Touchdown, Cowboys.
14:27You know I'm running looking for a Lynch.
14:30Where were you, buddy?
14:31I thought you were going to beat me.
14:33And then he got his tackle broken.
14:38He's somewhere down at the 10.
14:39I laid into this guy all game long.
14:43And I go back and I catch another touchdown.
14:45Deep ball out of hand.
14:47It's caught.
14:47Touchdown.
14:48Thank you very much yet again.
14:50I ended up catching him.
14:52I under y'all for something.
14:55And I was like, tell your coach to get you out of this game.
14:58You're getting killed, dude.
14:59I'm on offense.
15:01Emmett Smith.
15:02Troy Aikman.
15:04And Michael Irvin.
15:06And Michael Irvin.
15:10Michael, Troy, and Emmett were in the heyday.
15:12We all...
15:25We don't let each other down.
15:27We're not letting each other down.
15:28Not this one, all right?
15:29Let's go.
15:29Everybody, let's go.
15:32Dallas won five of its first six games.
15:35Propelled by its star-studded fence.
15:37Emmett Smith.
15:39Troy Aikman.
15:40And Michael Irvin.
15:43When Michael, Troy, and Emmett were in the heyday,
15:46we all got a spot on that bench.
15:49We got a jumbotron.
15:50We were getting our water, but we were peeking.
15:52We knew they were doing something special.
15:55Aikman handoff.
15:56Smith coming right.
15:57Trying to outrun the coverage.
15:59Makes a cut.
16:00Gets it.
16:01Oh, he's still good.
16:02Oh, look at that.
16:03He's got the score.
16:04He's got the five.
16:05It's a touchdown.
16:07Oh, man.
16:08It's absolutely ridiculous.
16:10It should never have happened.
16:11But Emmett Smith does the impossible.
16:16That is the greatest one I've ever seen in my life.
16:18Unbelievable.
16:21The Cowboys have the league's leading...
16:24Steve Berlund.
16:26...Rusher.
16:27Second leading receiver.
16:29And the third...
16:30All-U team.
16:34There have been plays where I've run around...
16:36Couldn't see the ball.
16:38And I put my hands up and the ball hit me right in the hands.
16:42And I'm telling you, if I close my eyes to run ten routes,
16:49I believe eight of them would have hit me right in the hands.
16:56Together, they were known as the triplets.
16:59And they helped make the Cowboys America's team again.
17:06A special teams player from tiny Albany State, who became known as the Shark.
17:14Wasn't that awesome?
17:16The kickoff team would line up on the 50-yard line in the end zone.
17:20Back there doing his little shark.
17:22By about the third game, they play the shark music.
17:26It became a phenomenon.
17:31He would get hit sometimes, not make a title,
17:34still get up and do his shark thing.
17:36You know, Kenny, you just got busted in the mouth.
17:39But he took that spotlight and ran with it.
17:43By week eight, the Cowboys were the main event.
17:50And fans packed the normally half-empty L.A. Coliseum.
17:55Many rooting for Dallas.
17:57I can't believe it.
17:59Look at all that blue up there.
18:00Not moving either.
18:03This is America's team.
18:06You know, and we were coming back to what made it America's team.
18:27We were putting it back on that pedestal, where it belonged.
18:35At 6-1, the young Cowboys were on top of the world.
18:38We were going home, getting that Mercedes, convertible Mercedes.
18:42We went back to the middle of the top, kick up the music,
18:45and smile all the way down the house.
18:48I used to say we're like the Beatles traveling.
18:52Stuff like coming home from a game, on the road, going to my house.
19:01And people are at your house.
19:03What?
19:04Women are in your house.
19:07What is this?
19:09I'm a big fan of yours.
19:12And where's your clothes?
19:14What are you doing?
19:16You know, it got to being like a traveling rock band.
19:21In fact, during the 1992 season, 11 different Cowboys have their own weekly television or radio program.
19:28You'd be better served naming the guy.
19:31Imagine how big you have to be.
19:3411.
19:36Only 53 players on the NFL roster.
19:40Guys that didn't have one.
19:42You know, we had a number of guys that took advantage of their celebrity, I guess you could say.
19:47He was fine with all that.
19:49Jimmy wanted guys loose.
19:50He wanted them confident.
19:52He wanted them out having fun.
19:54And, you know, Lord knows he was.
19:56So, I think that was key.
19:59Johnson gave his stars a little leeway, but not regarding the schedule.
20:03Michael Irvin learned this lesson when he arrived late for a team flight to Detroit.
20:09The plane trip.
20:10Yeah, I missed the plane.
20:14We were scheduled to depart, I believe, at 12 o'clock.
20:17And they said, well, we don't have everybody.
20:18And Jimmy said, who's not here?
20:20They said, Michael Irvin's not here.
20:21He said, shut the door.
20:22We're leaving.
20:24They said, well, he just pulled up in the parking lot.
20:26He's on his way to the plane now.
20:28He said, I said, shut the door.
20:29We're taking off.
20:30And that was that.
20:32We had just left Michael out on the tarmac.
20:34You know, we knew that Michael was going to get there, but Jimmy was extremely upset.
20:40He was hot.
20:41You can always tell when he's hot.
20:44He can't stop moving his lip like, Michael, you're one of my star players.
20:49I'm disappointed in you.
20:51And you're not starting.
20:54Michael's punishment was sitting out the first series, which was three plays and a punt.
20:58And then he was right back out on the field.
21:00Because one thing about Jimmy, he knew when a player could help us win.
21:03And he was going to get him out on the field.
21:05And then we were going to deal with the punishment later in the week.
21:08Irvin played and helped the Cowboys improve to 8-1.
21:12Big ball.
21:13Oh, man, is this man wide open?
21:14Irvin caught him to 15, 2-5.
21:17Strutches over the goal line.
21:19Touchdown, Michael Irvin.
21:22Jimmy Johnson would have to work twice as hard to keep his young team focused in the second half of
21:27the season.
21:32They beat the Cardinals and Broncos and blew out the Giants on Thanksgiving.
21:37To the 10, Smith to the goal line.
21:40Smith, happy Thanksgiving, Evan.
21:43This one's over.
21:44They were getting fat on success.
21:47And it finally caught up with them in Washington.
21:50Oh, man.
21:51Well, it's going to be a while today, I have a feeling.
21:54At 11-2, Dallas blew a chance to seal the NFC East title.
21:59Pass.
21:59He's at the end zone.
22:01He gets the ball.
22:01Batted.
22:02Gets grabbed.
22:02Sacked there.
22:03Sacked there.
22:04Grapped in the end zone.
22:05The ball still leaves.
22:06Grabbed it.
22:06The defense.
22:07What the call?
22:08Mikey, touchdown for the Redskins.
22:10Let's see.
22:10Let's see.
22:12It is.
22:13Touchdown.
22:13Washington Redskins defense.
22:16On the plane ride home.
22:18They thought the Redskins, they thought Joe Gibbs Redskins were going to just lie down
22:29as defending champions.
22:31In that violent division?
22:34No way.
22:37Jimmy Johnson felt the players weren't taking the loss as hard as he was.
22:42It was one of those fight homes that you better not say a word.
22:45You better not make a noise because you just might not be here tomorrow.
22:51And he walked back and he jumped on.
22:52I don't know what I was doing.
22:53He jumped on me.
22:54Sit down, Michael.
22:54Don't you move.
22:55He just went crazy.
22:57You know, he was just all in my face and I wasn't quite sure how to do it.
23:00You know, no one talks to you like that unless they're your dad.
23:02See, that's, you can't lose here.
23:06Ken Norris Jr.'s dad was World Heavyweight Champion.
23:14You pretty much have to be if you're going to talk to Ken Norris Jr. like that.
23:19Jimmy made it so uncomfortable losing.
23:24They made it miserable.
23:27In the regular season finale against Chicago, Johnson kept the pressure on.
23:31Despite a Cowboys blowout.
23:36He's got the 20.
23:37He's got the 10.
23:38He's got the touchdown.
23:40And he's got the NFL rushing.
23:47Wrapped up 13 wins.
23:49The most enfranchised history.
23:52But a sloppy fourth quarter including two fumbles by Emmitt's backup, Kervin Richards,
23:58put the head coach in a foul mood.
24:01Kevin Richards fumbled.
24:02Jimmy grabs him.
24:04Don't you fumble this ball again?
24:06You fumble this ball again?
24:07You know what I mean?
24:08And he goes and fumbles again.
24:11I'm serious.
24:14We have this game won.
24:17We killed Chicago.
24:19But Jimmy's still serious.
24:21No letting down.
24:23No wonder he got cut.
24:25I'm pretty sure he got cut.
24:27He cut the guy the next day.
24:30And Kervin, you have to pay him.
24:33He'll get his ring.
24:35But Jimmy was sending a message.
24:37It's not to be taken lightly.
24:39Johnson wanted his players focused.
24:41And he drove that point home in the locker room.
24:44Where Jerry Jones had invited a special guest.
24:47Saudi Arabian ambassador, Prince Bandar bin Sultan.
24:52So we finished 13-3.
24:53It was the best in the history of the Cowboys.
24:56And Jimmy was all set to give us that speech that we as players really wanted to hear.
25:01And about the time he started into it, the door opened up to the locker room.
25:05And it was Jerry Jones walking in with Prince Bandar.
25:09Jimmy just kind of dropped his head and stopped.
25:12And he said, it's been a nice season.
25:16I remember meeting the prince and everything.
25:19But I didn't have a problem with it.
25:22I love that Jerry was that proud of his football team.
25:26I love that he wanted to show them off.
25:28I love that he wanted to be around us.
25:30I love that it mattered to him.
25:33I still love that about him now.
25:35Both men wanted the same thing.
25:37A Dallas championship.
25:39And it was there for the taking at the start of the playoffs.
25:47Not without going through the Niners yet.
25:49It isn't.
25:53Six members of the Dallas offense made it.
25:56None from the defense.
25:59We were the number one defense in the lane.
26:02We were sacking folks.
26:04We were chasing teams down.
26:06No one could run on us.
26:07So the Pro Bowl announcements, it was just ridiculous.
26:11The defense used the Pro Bowls.
26:13They were number one defense in the lane.
26:15They were fifth-ranked defense in the lane.
26:20Snub is fuel for the playoffs.
26:22It was the Cowboys' first postseason game in Texas in nearly 10 years.
26:26And Ken Morton Jr. made the most of it.
26:29We don't get too many chances, bro.
26:31We don't get too many chances.
26:32Let's do it.
26:47It's amazing when you call a defensive huddle.
26:50And we all know that we're kicking their butts.
26:52And we're just going to look at each other with a certain sense of accomplishment.
26:57We're letting the Eagles know.
26:58We're back now.
27:01We're going to stop you.
27:02We're going to stop us.
27:03Hey, we're going to work on us.
27:05The shotgun cutting him.
27:07Chased by Jesko.
27:08Pulled it out and shot by Jesko.
27:16We showed them something today.
27:17How come we still don't have no defense?
27:19Number one defense in the league.
27:21Number one defense in the league.
27:23Dallas Cowboy defense unconscious.
27:26It's amazing.
27:39To get to the Super Bowl, Dallas would have to win on the road against the San Francisco 49ers.
27:45A team that lost only two games during the season.
27:49Oh, here's my moment.
27:52Championship game.
27:53San Francisco.
27:55Matched up against Cherry Rice.
27:58I had that fella there in my locker room.
28:00In college.
28:02They dreamed of playing opposite of him.
28:04In a game of this magnitude.
28:08Roger Staubach was there to go out on the field for the coin toss.
28:15I think, you know, and...
28:19You know, I'm in post a field right now.
28:22You sound.
28:32Slot right.
28:35Aikman back.
28:36He's pressured.
28:37He throws it out.
28:38Smith's there.
28:39He's got the first down coming.
28:46Right to five.
28:48Irvin's block.
28:48Looks it in.
28:49Emmitt's block.
28:51Looks it in.
28:53Emmitt Smith carries it in.
28:55And it's touchdown Dallas.
28:57With 12.25 remaining in the NFC Championship game.
29:09What many saw as a free pass to the Super Bowl for the Niners, the Cowboys viewed as a passing
29:15of the torch.
29:16Lee Young up under center.
29:18Great drop.
29:19What pressure comes.
29:20Stands.
29:21Comes away.
29:22Throws it.
29:23Intercepted by.
29:24And Ken Norton Jr., the leading ten-word on the leading defense.
29:29Comes away with the ball.
29:30We know that you guys are in a lot of tradition and history, but it's over now.
29:36It's our turn.
29:38Unilater!
29:39Unilater!
29:41Let's go, boys.
29:43The Cowboys' coronation would have to wait.
29:46The 49ers drove 93 yards to pull within four points.
29:50And there were still over four minutes left.
29:54And now Jimmy Johnson's offense has gone.
29:59They might need points, Brad.
30:02Our offensive coordinator, Norv, asked Jimmy, you know, how do you want to approach this?
30:06Do you want to try to take time off the clock and be conservative?
30:09Or do you, you know, want to throw the football here?
30:12And typical Jimmy, without really answering the question, just said, I want to score.
30:17And so, okay, well, that's all Norv had to hear.
30:21So on first down, you know, we called 896F flat.
30:26We've got a post on one side and a curl on the other.
30:29Michael had been the guy running the post route.
30:31But every time we had called it, I had pretty much thrown the ball to the curl to Alvin Harper.
30:38So here we are.
30:39I call 896F flat.
30:41And by the time 8-9, before he got six out, I've already taken off out of the huddle.
30:47And I'm headed to Alvin's spot.
30:49Forget this, Alvin.
30:51I'm going over here to catch this curl route.
30:54I'm thinking, hey, man, this game won the line.
30:57I'm the one more ready for this than anybody.
31:10So I get underneath the center, and I see that the 49ers are showing blitz.
31:15And I know that because of the blitz, the post is really where the ball should go.
31:19And he snaps the ball.
31:21And I come off the line, and I remember I'm running around.
31:24I hook up, and I'm looking for the ball.
31:28He threw the ball backside to Alvin Harper.
31:32Caught 35.
31:34Harper's breaking away.
31:35Harper's got midfield.
31:38Alvin Harper sprinting up the football field with my foot.
31:44About this moment, looking at me sprinting up the football field, I said, you blew it.
31:48Harper's got the 20.
31:50Harper's got the 10-yard line.
31:52Wow.
31:54I want to play.
31:56My goodness, what a play.
31:59Michael was just as happy as he was that we made this big play.
32:03He was just sick thinking that that should have been his ball.
32:06But what's interesting is I don't know that we get the same coverage
32:09if Michael had been the guy over there running that route.
32:12Louie.
32:13Hut, hut.
32:14An Aikman touchdown pass to Calvin Martin sealed the win
32:18and the NFC Championship.
32:21Touchdown.
32:22Touchdown, Cowboys.
32:23This team's going to Pasadena.
32:26The Cowboys are going to a Super Bowl.
32:30That was a great feeling.
32:32You believed you can do it, but you can't believe this moment's happened.
32:38You're going to the Super Bowl.
32:41Man, we are actually going to a Super Bowl.
32:44Hey, fantastic, fantastic, fantastic, every single one of you.
32:50I mean, and I'm not just talking about these last 60 minutes.
32:55I'm talking about the quarterback schools, the minicamps, the training camp.
33:01Everybody, you did one hell of a job.
33:04And the only thing else I got to say is,
33:06how about them Cowboys?
33:10He said it, and we just, we just rolled, you know?
33:14How about them Cowboys?
33:16Those of us who were in the lean years,
33:18we remember the 1 in 15s and the Redskins and the Giants
33:21and the Eagles just killing us
33:23and saying, you know, the Cowboys are nothing.
33:25And all of a sudden, Coach broke out with,
33:28how about them Cowboys?
33:31How about those Cowboys now, you know?
33:34That's what he's really saying.
33:35How you like us now.
33:38Troy Aikman had a near-perfect day,
33:40completing 13 of 16 passes in the second half.
33:44But Jimmy Johnson proved once again
33:46that no star is more important than the team.
33:50There were a number of interviews that I was asked to do
33:53following that game against the 49ers,
33:54and so I was trying to accommodate as many people as I could.
33:57And I finally got showered up,
33:59and I went to go get on the bus,
34:00and the bus is pulling out and leaving.
34:04Jimmy, like he had done with Michael Irvin earlier,
34:08they said, Coach, Troy's not on the bus.
34:10He says, I don't care.
34:12Shut the door.
34:13We're out of here.
34:14I mean, we won the NFC Championship game.
34:16We're going to the Super Bowl,
34:18and Jimmy still wouldn't wait for me.
34:20I had to ride the media bus to go get back onto the plane.
34:33They've been there two times,
34:35but I wouldn't call losing twice an advantage.
34:40I think we were so excited that we beat the 49ers.
34:44I think that was kind of our Super Bowl game.
34:46The fact that we beat the great 49ers with Jerry Rice and Steve Young.
34:49We beat that team.
34:51Who were the Buffalo Bills?
34:52You know, we beat the 49ers.
34:56The players fantasized about their Super Bowl moment.
35:00It's a wobbly pass.
35:02It's picked off by the shark.
35:06But nothing could prepare them for the moment
35:08when Super Bowl Sunday finally arrived.
35:12When we hit that tunnel,
35:14and those 100,000 people,
35:17and they were right here.
35:20It seemed like that whole stadium was right here.
35:23It's like my knees slipped.
35:25They just, boom, boom.
35:26They got butterflies for some reason.
35:28That's big, right?
35:30It is big.
35:31It's up to the right out here.
35:32Oh, yeah.
35:33It's a lot of damn people.
35:37Does it have a bit B of why
35:39the Super Bowl should still be played in the daytime?
35:43Listen, did you feel that?
35:45He said, yeah.
35:47Shut up.
35:50Because we knew,
35:51if they knew we were nervous,
35:53and the whole football team was in trouble.
35:56Let's give him what they come to see.
35:58Let's give him a show, guys.
36:00The Cowboys quarterback from UCLA,
36:04number eight, Troy Aikman.
36:07When I was introduced and ran out of the tunnel,
36:10I had this wave of emotion
36:12and really what this game was all about
36:15and how different it was.
36:18In the biggest game of his career,
36:21Troy Aikman delivered an MVP performance.
36:38I don't think I've ever seen a quarterback
36:41throw like Troy threw that day.
36:51So, Steve Young didn't throw six touchdowns
36:53two years later in the Super Bowl?
36:56Here we go with this.
37:05I'm going to stop this from happening.
37:10Aikman, three yards and four touchdowns.
37:13Two of them to Michael Irvin.
37:34We call a post-point.
37:37And I run the route
37:38and I break out of it early.
37:41I was anxious.
37:43There was a Super Bowl.
37:44I was nervous.
37:45And I saw Troy getting ready to throw the ball.
37:48Now, if I see him throwing the ball,
37:50then I would imagine the DB seeing him
37:52because he's turning and running.
37:53And I was like, oh, man, I messed up.
37:55If he gets in here and intercepts his ball,
37:58it's 99 yards to the end zone.
38:01So as I jumped up,
38:02I threw my leg up
38:04to try to shield this guy away from the ball.
38:10And all I can remember thinking
38:12when I landed,
38:13just launch towards the end zone.
38:18Now, it was early,
38:19but it made it a beautiful play.
38:21It made it a beautiful play, man.
38:24And until this day,
38:25I love seeing that play.
38:28The Cowboys defense overshadowed all year
38:31never gave Buffalo a chance.
38:36Ken Norton knocked Jim Kelly out of the game
38:39in the second quarter.
38:40And the defense forced a Super Bowl record
38:43nine turnovers.
38:47I don't think we ever thought
38:49in our wildest dreams
38:50that we would hit that many turnovers.
38:51We were fortunate enough to recover them,
38:54score, and keep scoring.
39:03In the end,
39:04the only mistake the Cowboys made
39:06was celebrating a little too early.
39:08It's a sack by Jack McClendon.
39:10And fumble.
39:11Ken Norton Jr. became a champion
39:13just like Ken Norton Jr.
39:15I mean, senior.
39:17And Leon left.
39:19Oh, look out, here he goes.
39:21Here comes Leon.
39:22To the team.
39:23Go, Leon.
39:24Go, Leon.
39:24Oh, Leon.
39:25It's knocked out of his hand.
39:27It's a fumble.
39:28It's a fumble.
39:29He had it knocked out of his hand.
39:31It's not going to be a touchdown.
39:32No, it's not.
39:34Leon came to the sideline,
39:36and I said, man, what happened?
39:38He said he was watching the Jumbotron,
39:41and he was trying to do Mike Irvin,
39:43where he put the ball out
39:45across the goal line.
39:51Don Bebe caught him from behind
39:53and knocked it out of his hand.
39:55Oh, Leon.
39:56Look at him.
39:57And at the time,
39:58it would have been a Super Bowl record
40:00for points.
40:02For 52 of them,
40:03it's hard to be upset about that.
40:08At that point,
40:09we were so happy
40:10because we realized what had happened.
40:12We were going to be champs.
40:15The Cowboys are back on top of the mountain now.
40:17They were there in the 70s,
40:19fell off in the 80s.
40:20They're back on top now,
40:22and they should stay there a while.
40:23Wow.
40:25What a ride it's been.
40:28Troy Aikman's the MVP.
40:31Jimmy Johnson's taken his team
40:33from the absolute worst
40:35to the absolute best
40:37in four years.
40:39And Dallas,
40:43your Cowboys are the champion.
40:48Jerry Jones and Jimmy Johnson
40:50had reached the goal they set
40:52four years earlier.
40:53America's team was a champion again.
40:56For me,
40:58when you're a number one pick
40:59as a quarterback,
41:00you pretty much understand
41:02that that organization
41:03drafted you
41:03to win a world championship.
41:06I just remember thinking
41:07no matter what happens,
41:10I came through
41:11and delivered
41:12what I was brought here to do.
41:13It was a great feeling
41:15and a great thing
41:15to be a part of.
41:22Dang.
41:23Really?
41:27Love Joe Montana.
41:28That's insane.
41:37That parade,
41:38I don't think
41:38I've ever been a part
41:39of anything like that before.
41:41Confetti was all over the place.
41:43We had our jerseys on
41:44and there were people everywhere.
41:47One of the tallest buildings
41:48in Dallas,
41:49way up high,
41:50we could barely see them.
41:51They were waving,
41:52screaming,
41:52hey, Kenny.
41:54That parade was just special.
42:08We were more than a football team.
42:11We all started at the bottom
42:13and we worked it all to the top
42:16together.
42:25People say, yeah,
42:26all of them are just as sweet.
42:28The second one was as sweet
42:30as the first
42:30and the third one
42:31was as sweet as the second.
42:32All of those
42:34are lies.
42:37There's nothing like the first one.
42:39Nothing.
42:41That was our first time saying
42:43we were champions.
42:47There's nothing like it.
43:14There's nothing like it.
43:15There's nothing like it.
43:16There's nothing like it.
43:16There's nothing like it.
43:16There's nothing like it.
