00:00As we talk about those Padres and Manny Machado, who finally starting to get a couple of base hits here,
00:04he's been struggling the entire season.
00:06Quote, the game's evolving, man.
00:08It's definitely getting harder to play.
00:09It's definitely getting more strategic.
00:11I just wish we can get the analytics out of the way.
00:14There's too many stats out there.
00:16Now, he does have a point, and he's more of an old school player, and he's a tremendous talent and
00:20a great baseball player.
00:21But it is interesting, Ray.
00:22Sometimes you have that clash of what do your numbers say and what does your eye test say?
00:27Yeah, and Manny's a potential Hall of Famer.
00:29I think he continues to play.
00:31I mean, he was still a very good defender, was a fantastic defender, and played for a lot of different
00:36teams.
00:37I think that he played for Baltimore and L.A. and moved on to San Diego.
00:41And so, look, he's never been afraid to speak his mind.
00:45This is always kind of who he's been.
00:48And the one thing, unfortunately, that I would say for him is what he wants is not going away.
00:52It's only going in the other direction.
00:53So he doesn't have to embrace it because his career is probably four or five years away from being over.
00:59So it won't really matter for him at this stage.
01:01A lot of his career has already been completed in the last 15 years.
01:05But, yeah, I mean, I saw that interview, Donnie, where he was talking and throwing out some of the different
01:10stats that we're all familiar with.
01:12And I guess he is not for whatever reason.
01:14But trust me when I tell you, the majority of players these days are very familiar with these stats.
01:19They are very into it.
01:21They are setting goals for themselves in different categories here.
01:25It's just, Manny doesn't have to.
01:26He's already established himself as a big league player, $200 million player as well.
01:30So good for him.
01:31Speaks his mind.
01:32So be it.
01:33Yeah, they get paid for those stats, too, by the way, because this is the generation that's like, what's your
01:37batting average?
01:38Don't care about it.
01:39Give me the analytical numbers.
01:40How many runs am I going to drive in?
01:41How many fly balls do I hit?
01:42The guy should be embracing analytics, Craig, because old school is batting average.
01:46He's a 172.
01:47Manny Machado, a 172 average in the middle of that lineup.
01:50Never thought I'd see that.
01:51But also understand this from Manny Machado.
01:54Craig, I think most guys have played baseball at some sort of level.
01:58Once you graduate from, like, the Little League, you know, 11, 12-year-olds go to 13 to get the
02:02bigger diamond out there.
02:04If you watch Manny Machado play, if you've ever played third base or shortstop, fielding a ball deep in the
02:08hole, throwing the first base,
02:09it feels like you're throwing that ball a mile and can barely get there.
02:12Manny's got one of the best arms I've ever seen.
02:14And some of the plays he makes, they don't even make sense.
02:16Like, he breaks the laws of physics.
02:18Ultra talented.
02:19Hopefully gets it back underway at 172.
02:21But, Craig, I do want to ask you one question about those Padres.
02:24Underwhelming in a lot of categories here, but still sitting in second place at 33 and 30.
02:28A terrible last couple weeks stretch there where you see the Dodgers, eight games lead over the Padres.
02:34Two weeks ago, Craig, they were neck and neck with the Padres a half game up.
02:38What are we thinking about the Padres the rest of the way?
02:40Maybe some changes that they could possibly have.
02:43Yeah, I'm not sure, Donnie.
02:44I'm not a huge fan of what's going on there.
02:47And then the other thing that's a little bit concerning, I don't think it's concerning long term, but it's concerning
02:51now.
02:51Whenever, Donnie, you have an ownership change as rapidly as they have one, you really don't know what kind of
02:57direction they're going to go in.
02:59Because usually when new owners buy a club, they make a lot of changes.
03:04Does that mean changes for the general manager?
03:07Does it mean changes for the manager?
03:10Usually rash decisions are not made in season.
03:13The Padres may have to sit on their hands at this deadline.
03:16I'm not sure that, you know, that AJ Preller is going to have the wherewithal to be able to just
03:22go get, you know, attach money to whatever contracts he's getting in return.
03:25And they've traded basically all their top prospects to get all the guys that they have.
03:28So, yeah, I'm just not seeing a great Padres will be 500 or better, probably, but I'm just not seeing
03:35them as a threat this year.
