Shadow Energy Secretary Claire Coutinho said the Henry Nowak case raised wider concerns about policing and public services, arguing some officials are reluctant to intervene for fear of being accused of racism. She also criticised “two-tier policing” and called for equal treatment before the law and public services. Report by Etemadil. 00:00What we've seen is a number of cases now where, whether it's our police or wider public services,
00:05they are not intervening to stop public harm from happening because they are too frightened
00:10of being called racist.
00:12So we have to unpick the ideology which has got into our public services because actually
00:17whether it's murder or child abuse, the case of the grooming gangs for example, we need
00:22to make sure that they can operate without fear or favour to do what they need to do
00:26to keep the public safe from harm.
00:28I do think there is a two-tier policing problem but that's not just policing, it's across
00:33our public services and we saw within the police services there's a race action plan where
00:38they're being told to treat ethnic minorities differently.
00:41I don't actually think anybody in the country wants that.
00:44We should all be equal before the law.
00:46That is the best way to make sure that the police can uphold law and order and also that
00:50they can uphold the trust that the public have in them as well.
