01:23To get your eye in ahead of it
01:25The second of which is on its way very soon

01:31I mean, what a setting
01:32It's a joy to come back, isn't it?
01:34Yeah, it is a joy to come back
01:35And it's always
01:36I've not been here in actually many, many years at Monaco
01:39And a lovely sunny day
01:40And it's really
01:41You can see it really test in these new cars
01:43And these drivers out there
01:44It's about getting everything right
01:46And the track here keeps changing more than any track
01:49And I think that's a real test as we go into this P2 session
01:52And practice sessions coming into the Monaco Grand Prix
01:54It's all about finding your rhythm and groove
01:57Early advantage to Ferrari
01:59Now, of course, Mercedes have got every pole and Grand Prix win so far this season
02:02But on the evidence this morning
02:04Are Ferrari favourites here in Monaco?
02:06We thought they would be coming into this event
02:09Because their car's been very good through the corners all year
02:12And also the way they've set the turbochargers up on the power unit
02:17And just other aspects
02:19And both drivers are very handy around there
02:22So, unquestionably, first advantage to Ferrari
02:25Charles Leclerc there
02:26Just two seconds off last year's free practice one time
02:29Dominated by him also at that time
02:32And that's amazing
02:34Considering how much downforce they've taken off these cars for 2026
02:37He's recommitted his future to the team
02:40He's obviously the home hero here
02:41He'll be looking for a strong result
02:43After what he said in Canada
02:44Was his worst weekend in Formula 1
02:46He still came P4
02:47It didn't come either to everyone this morning, though
02:50A few mishaps
02:51Let's have a look at them
02:52So, the first up was Hadja
02:55And very difficult, Bernie
02:56Because ultimately losing this time in practice
03:01Is a bit of a wounder here, isn't it?
03:03Yeah, it's really difficult here
03:04I think practice, like you said
03:06This track is about confidence
03:07There's driver track
03:08You need to be really sure
03:10Every time you approach a corner
03:11Where your braking is
03:12How much grip there is
03:14The grip is changing lap on lap throughout it
03:16So, this is one where teams don't worry so much about set-up
03:20They don't worry so much about tweaking the cars during the session in particular
03:23And it's just about getting the driver out there lap on lap on lap
03:26And missing out that will be disappointing
03:30And, you know, this is the big difficulty
03:32Is any accident, any incident
03:34These garages
03:35That image doesn't show it
03:37These garages are tiny here
03:39The rooms that the mechanics are trying to work in
03:41The space around the car is so limited
03:43The spares they have out the back
03:45Very, very limited
03:46So, to try and get these cars turned around and back out
03:49He doesn't want to miss any more running today
03:51He doesn't want to miss any of the P2 session
03:53They will work tirelessly throughout P2
03:55Even if it's not out at the beginning
03:57So, that, you know, there will be a lot of very hot mechanics back in that garage
04:01They're trying to get that ready for P2
04:03Now, the experienced Fernando Alonso
04:05New father
04:06So, maybe he's a little bit tired
04:08But he brushed the barrier
04:09It didn't look that bad
04:10But actually, the damage to the car was fairly significant
04:13Shaved off the front wing end plate
04:16I mean, you know, is this just what happens in Monaco, Martin?
04:20It can do there
04:21But that's a mechanical issue that's generated that
04:23And a pretty magnificent save, I must say, from Fernando
04:26Had his wits about it
04:27Because it looks as if he's just pulled the handbrake on
04:31You don't have a handbrake on these cars
04:32But effectively downshifting or hitting the brake pedal
04:35When you've got the kinetic motor
04:37Rather than the brake discs slowing it down initially
04:41And so, I'd be pretty sure that was a mechanical issue
04:45Yeah, we've seen a little bit of that from Aston, haven't we, this year already
04:47Certain times where these lock-ups have gone off
04:50In unusual places for Fernando Alonso
04:52Actually looks fairly calm in that garage, then
04:54What will he be hoping to achieve from FP2?
04:57Fernando Alonso, specifically?
04:59Yeah, I think that, you know, Aston Martin need to get some reliability on the car
05:02We keep seeing these little issues, as you see
05:04It is about building up here
05:06This is about qualifying
05:08So, in the first session, we've seen a lot of teams running the hard and the medium tyres
05:11This is a chance to get the soft on
05:13Try and get a qualifying lap in as close to the representative conditions as you can
