00:02This video is brought to you by S.T.A.L.D.
00:43After three months of waiting from the season opener, it was time to hit the track once again
00:49for round two of the season in the FIA Formula 3 Championship here at the streets of Monaco.
00:57Immediately we would have a red flag, James Wharton crashing into the barriers through
01:02the swimming pool section, he jumped out of the car okay, that would give us an extended
01:0615 minutes of racing out there, and drivers pushing the limits throughout, it would be
01:13Teofil Noll, our pole sitter from round one, who would go quickest at the top of the session
01:19with a 1.25.7, well that was practice, now it is time to go to the top of the
01:26session with
01:26to go qualifying a different format for this round as we always have, we split the cars
01:32into two groups of 15, they'll get 16 minutes each of running, and they'll be fighting for
01:39what row of the grid they start on, the quickest group will form the inside row of the grid for
01:44the feature race on Sunday, the slower group, the outside row, we still do reverse the top 12, so the
01:51sixth fastest driver in the slower group will start on pole position for the sprint race tomorrow.
01:56My name Chris McCarthy, Alice Powell alongside me, Alice you know all about racing around this circuit
02:03at this level, what are the drivers going into in qualifying here? A challenge, a big challenge,
02:08particularly after practice yesterday which was disrupted, luckily for them it was extended,
02:14but it's a difficult circuit, it's not a unique qualifying session like the usual session we see
02:20for these drivers, split into these two groups, we've got our even number cars heading out first,
02:26the likes of Ugachukru, Strom, Strez, DePaolo, Tappen, they're all in this session, Louis Sharp as well,
02:33Brandon Badoa is out here too, so they've got 16 minutes to try and generate as much temperature,
02:39adapt to the track conditions, we've had a Formula 2 session out yesterday after these F3 cars,
02:45Porsche have over one Super Cup as well, so the track has evolved, it's going to be who's going
02:50to be able to get the space and adapt, it should be easier during this session because there's half
02:55the amount of cars in each group of course to find some space, but it can still be a challenge.
03:01Yeah and there is some good structures in there from the race director that drivers will have to be at
03:07full pace going towards Rascas and that's something they'll have to be wary of in this session.
03:13Yes, we saw yesterday didn't we, plenty of laps that were disrupted for for people queuing down
03:18at La Rascas, so turn 18 and the race directors have said that for clarity from the entrance of turn
03:2518, so the entrance of Rascas, cars on the racing line must be at full pace, we certainly didn't see
03:32that yesterday there was several laps were disrupted, Freddie Slater was was one of those that I remember
03:38that had to take avoiding action for Ian McLaughlin as well that came around at high speed just avoiding
03:43making contact with some cars, so they would have been told they would have certainly be have a sit
03:50down with their team and been informed that you need to make sure that you want that you are at
03:55racing speed, the last thing you want particularly around any so particularly here at Monaco is to
04:00receive a penalty for the feature race, it's hard to overtake here, so this could actually probably
04:05be one of the most important and challenging qualifying sessions of this Formula 3 season.
04:10For the group B drivers, you can see Samuel Nile and Ernesto Rivera back after missing the first
04:17round due to injury just watching on all they can do for now is watch they will be out next
04:22after this
04:23just shy of half 11 local time and then they'll know what time they have to go and beat if
04:28they want to
04:28take overall pole position and the two points that comes with it uh this was drawn in the driver's
04:34briefing how we would do this in terms of would it be the even numbers go first or the odd
04:38numbers
04:39the even numbers go first and Ogachiku taking us up through the first corner Campos Racing took
04:44pole position last year with Nikola Solov and they won their feature race at the first round with
04:50championship leader Ogachiku so they'll be coming into this with a lot of confidence but will this be one of
04:56those sessions where we'll see them build up throughout a bit of a different approach yes
05:01you're not going to see them usually we see drivers come into the pits midway through the session when
05:05we have our usual 30 minute session they might have ventured out on the tyres they used it in free
05:10practice get a taste of the track get a feel get themselves and the car up to temperature but you
05:15can't do that in this session already they're on their their second build lap and we're under 13 minutes
05:20remaining you can see all taking it steady just trying to gently build up that core temperature
05:25using the brakes to try and generate it you can often you'll see drivers go forward on the brake
05:31bias to really try and get those front tyres warmed up because the last thing you want is heading into
05:37samderbot into turn one and we've seen it plenty of times before in the past a driver hits the brake
05:41for
05:41their first time on that push lap that front tyre temp is not there you lock up and you go
05:46straight on so
05:47it's hard to do the lateral loading here we see some drivers you can see weaving left to right to
05:53try and generate some temperature through through the lateral of weaving but it's hard to do not
05:59many long straights here and not many straights at all well fine results always provisional for us and
06:04that will certainly be the case in this one super tapene will be investigated after the session for an
06:09unsafe release so we'll see if anything comes of that let's read all the names for you then it's
06:14Ugo Ugochiku in this one Noah Stromstead Mateo de Paolo who didn't have a good qualifying last time
06:19Tuka Tafanen who has been on the podium here Taito Kato Kanato Lee Hiyu Yamakashi Bruno Del Pino Brando
06:25Baduer Louis Sharp Jose Garfias Finn McLaughlin and then we've got Brad Benavides Fernando Baracalo Nando
06:31Vudbin and Bhakti Alice this is our first time we're seeing them at speed heading up the hill yeah and
06:36it's our
06:36championship leader taking the cars round up to the top of Massadet on the brakes you go in slightly
06:42early but you apex later and then down into casino and of course perfect track space for for Ugo he's
06:49not going to be disrupted by anyone maybe making a mistake feel like he's still going to be on some
06:54kind of 90 push you sometimes get told by by your team okay let's let's start with a couple of
07:01prep
07:02laps and a 90 and then is where you give it your all so he did for a split second
07:08have the fastest first
07:09sector but that's the Paolo now who's snatched that away yeah just coming round it seems uh tapping
07:16him and Strom said slightly up the road they've come across the line already to put a benchmark time on
07:21the board so we ride on board with Ugo Ciccu coming through this final sector now yes so we're coming
07:27through to back got the gyro camera aboard which give us such fantastic views you could clip of the
07:34limiter there as he entered the swimming pool section we saw him there going to turn 16 taking
07:41some flying lessons through that sector over the sausage curb he'll want to avoid doing that he
07:47actually missed out on the practice starts yesterday because that was on his final flying lap and for
07:52those evil eyes of you DRS is available this morning we didn't have DRS available in practice yesterday yeah and
07:59this is the only section they can use it down towards Sandy Watts up the hill and it's a good
08:03chicken 131.081 we are continuing to build the pace here we did a 125 uh yesterday Nanda would
08:11been in back the second it's McLaughlin uh looking back at Noah Stromstead now coming through the final
08:17section yeah getting a bit too much of that left hand curve and the rear stepping out but as you
08:22said
08:22Chris there's still a long way to go in terms of time to to find for these drivers
08:27Nicholas Solof was was on pole last year 124.8 and actually he was in the first group and usually
08:34you you'd want to try and be in the second group because that's that the track is at its best
08:39it's
08:39had some formula 3 for any rubber go down it's a bit cleaner after maybe some parties down at Rascast
08:45during the night and traffic has been open actually just before this session there there were cars going
08:51around the the circuit so the second session is usually what we see the fastest however last year
08:57it was quite disruptive was group B with some uh plenty of yellow flags and a red flag as well
09:03it
09:03was Roman Balinski that was able to to snatch pole in the second group but overall it was Solof who
09:08had
09:08the fastest time in the first group and started on overall hold yeah whatever happens we'll get a new
09:13pole sitter a new winner here at Monaco the only pole sitters out there have been tear Phil now and
09:19Brad Benavidez up to the line we go Anugachiku goes to the top 126.3 for him so far back
09:26to Noah
09:26Stromstead he's just gone purple through the first sector out the Nouvelle chicane he comes yeah so we're
09:31starting to edge towards now the lap times that we were seeing in in free practice you can still see
09:36plenty of fighting on the steering wheel coming from Stromstead who was so close to the inside wall
09:41through the swimming pool section much cleaner now through that part of the chicane at turn 16 then into
09:46Raskas oh and just losing the rear maybe still not quite got the tire temperature in there there's
09:53eight minutes of the session left to go so still plenty of time for him to try and
09:58make his way further up the always saying that he goes up to p1 but that certainly will be challenged
10:02that time he lost a a chunk of time in that final sector so my ops now to to to
10:09regather himself
10:09and there is James Wharton who had that real big impact yesterday Chris and you have to say fair play
10:16to
10:16the Prima team to to get the car back out ready for him today because that was a lot of
10:21damage
10:21so here's the moment then through Raskas for Stromstead too much speed in was it or yeah looking at that
10:27actually a bit too much speed in and lucky not to click that barrier the barriers here of course are
10:34your track limits unless you're sending it across the chicanes and we've seen even the lightest of touches
10:41to these formula three cars and that could be your session done very close so far particularly between
10:47the the top three isn't it there's less than half a tenth between those Benavides not far behind
10:51Stromstead a good chicken tap and end was on your screen now Ferrari Junior then Benavides
10:56Bruno Del Pino Taito Cato is in P6 the top six will be included in that top 12 reverse that
11:05we do for the sprint race and it looks like Taito Cato is improving on this lap he was
11:11quickest at the in-season test at Red Bull Ring a couple of weeks ago and the ART driver now
11:17charging down him yeah he said coming into this weekend he was feeling very confident he eventually
11:22the fastest in testing and he's showing that confidence out on track right now he'll be challenging
11:27if he completes this lap nice and cleanly for the top of the timings he's nice and clean through that
11:33part
11:33of the chicane you get close to the barrier as close as you dare and again a kick of oversteer
11:38on the exit
11:38of the chicane is he going to have some traffic though Chris no they managed it to get out the
11:43way safely for
11:45him and he should get a clean run now across the line and if it's a clean sector should go
11:51to the top of
11:51the times here he comes up to the line the ART driver going fast just 125.9 tap and end
11:56uh got out of the
11:57way you've got to be at racing speed when it gets to there but i think he'll be okay with
12:02that one
12:03towards a good chicken now he's got to find a response Carter has just gone three and a half
12:07tenths quicker than the rest of the field Brando Baddoware is purple through the first sector everyone
12:11going quicker including Uga Chukwu yeah that's a real solid first sector from Baddoware Rodin had a
12:16good showing in qualifying here last year and i hope to continue and so did Campos it did Uga Chukwu
12:22he
12:23struggled a little bit here last year would have hoped for for better results he qualified 14th so he'll
12:29certainly be hoping to be much higher than that this year our championship leader but look at that
12:34sector from Baddoware that middle sector really strong first sector though has been taken away and
12:40Taffanen has got that at the moment and Nanda Vodbirambakti for dams Lucas Oil has just gone p3
12:45what a result that would be for him on board we look now at Brando Baddoware up to the line
12:50this is
12:51going to be fastest yes by four tenths of a second the Italian driver who got his first formula three
12:57podium at the first round now looks to be challenging for his first pole position Rodin have had good
13:04history at this circuit Belinsky putting it on the front row last year but Taffanen now trying to go
13:10quickest for MP yeah you can see how they're just chasing the throttle on the exit of Raskas and
13:15some getting ever so close to the wall on the exit but that's what we need to do to be
13:18fast around
13:19here Taffanen up to P2 yeah good time that from Tuukka Taffanen podium here of course so using that
13:26experience some experienced drivers up at the top haven't we we've got Baddoware Taffanen Delpino
13:32Ugechukwu, Stromsted, Kato the top driver of those rookies if you like in P6 you've qualified around
13:39here how much of a unique challenge is this Alice compared to the other circuits help go to it's a
13:45huge challenge as we've mentioned you there's no opportunity to go out maybe on a on a used tire at
13:51first part of the session and do say two runs you've just got this one solid run track evolution from
13:58free practice is huge and of course we usually see for Formula 3 free practice in the morning
14:03on a Friday and then we have qualifying in the afternoon whereas it doesn't work like that around
14:08Monaco they have one session pretty much each day so Stromsted is under investigation or will be
14:15it's noted for impeding at turn four but it's yeah it is but it's certainly a challenge but Baddoware
14:23at the moment qualified 28th here last year and uh he'll be looking for him to well he's clearly
14:31using his experience as he's going to get very close we saw that from Ugechukwu yesterday didn't
14:35be in free practice very close to the the barrier but he certainly will be hoping that he stays where
14:43he is
14:44on the timing sheets because that is an impressive time but we're still about half a second off what
14:48we saw last year from Nicolas Solop who took overall pole continuing to build up Taito Kato
14:56just heading his way now towards Raskas looking very quick Ugechukwu looking even faster he's got
15:02Tapanen up the road but he's got his foot down now where Taito Kato comes out the final corner might
15:07grab
15:07a little bit of a toe from Tapanen up to the line where does this put in p2 125.4
15:13remember the
15:13top six will be included in that reverse and trying to get in that top six is a very close
15:18fight Kanato Lee has just gone to p7 back on board we go with Ugechukwu fighting for pole position
15:24down to the back now dab on the brakes as he goes in down a gear change and you want
15:29to
15:29get the car nice and straight as you possibly can through the chicane close up to the barrier on the
15:34right hand side for turn 15 and then hope that there's no traffic uh on the exit here and he
15:41gets that
15:41nicely done for Ugechukwu bad aware has lost some time looking you can see on the bottom right of
15:46your screen in that middle sector because that first sector was really strong so potentially
15:50he's got some traffic Ugechukwu though still just under oh that's bad aware isn't it
15:57so yeah maybe is but there's has been some traffic for him across this lap but still just over half
16:02a
16:02tenth i think there's been contact Finn McLaughlin's front wing is damaged so yeah you can see that i think
16:08he might have made contact with him going in uh to the corner van amma sport racing leading the
16:13team's championship for the first time in their formula three history go p3 with hiu yamakashi less
16:19than a tenth of a second between the top three that could get even closer now with tapping in us
16:23yes
16:24you can see again for him getting the tail of the car out on the exit of rascas i'm just
16:31looking at the
16:31sectors this is gonna gonna make a challenge whether it's gonna be challenging about where it certainly is so
16:36close in that final sector and just out and look at that chris we've got a tenth of a second
16:42separating
16:42our top five one tenth of a second there as you said between the top five hiu yamakashi just outside
16:47of it front wing hanging off for high tech's finn mclaughlin and he's just saying he has damage on his
16:53front left so it seems i don't know if he'd already had contact with a with a barrier bad aware
16:59went past
17:00in there that's the bit we did pick up but uh finn mclaughlin is now going to be at best
17:05on row 14
17:07of the grid yeah for for the rookie who actually had a fairly strong showing for his first time around
17:12monaco yesterday but if you if you don't have the pace to challenge for pole position you need to get
17:20into that top six if you're top six in group as we're just going to catch a replay of mclaughlin
17:26oh there we go out on the exit of turn seven it's that camera angle still doesn't do it justice
17:32how
17:32downhill that is just a bit too greedy on the way in to to turn seven again the lightest of
17:38touches can
17:40do a lot and then we're going to get the instant with
17:43yeah stromsted and it's going to be tapper that he's going to impede
17:50yeah stromsted impeded me in b4
17:53that's going to be investigated after the session as well it does say doesn't it you cannot be
17:58going slow speed on the racing line so something that we have to keep an eye on right final flying
18:04laps last chance to get in that top six and to get quickest overall down the hill we go we're
18:10just
18:10watching ugechukwu into the hairpin now currently p5 stromsted will be fourth at best taffanen has
18:16been across the line so it's over to ugechukwu baduair del pino to improve and baduair has gone purple
18:22through the first sector yeah first driver in the first sector is baduair to go into the 22 second
18:28mark so it's a tenth quicker than currently what ugechukwu has done in the first sector so gonna be a
18:34strong lap but you've got to string it together one small mistake one small lock up and you could be
18:38across the chicane the nouvelle chicane there but stringing it all together the traditional they've
18:44done a push cool push this is the final lapse coming in ugechukwu looking very quick baduair
18:49looking even quicker it looks like we could see a fight for pole position provisional pole position
18:54between the lows two ugechukwu heading through rascas now up to the final corner he comes just
19:00fighting with the car they're almost making contact with the barriers but he's through anthony noakes
19:04he's up towards the start finish line will this be good enough to put him to the top yes it
19:09will
19:09124.9 provisional pole goes to ugechukwu but now it's over to rodin motorsports brando baduair up to
19:16the line he goes and it will be a front row start and provisional pole position for brando baduair on
19:22grand prix sunday 124.6 three and a half tenths quicker than the rest of the field and this could
19:28be
19:28rodin's first pole since spa in 2024 that's three three and a half tenths quicker wow around than
19:35anyone in your group around wonaco i mean yeah take a bow that's hugely impressive what got it really
19:41for him that middle sector was was two and a half tenths quicker than his previous same with the last
19:47sector so really found and they they can see comparing to ugechukwu found a nice chunk of time
19:53there okay mate that is p1 guys i love you and of course faster than the time we saw set
20:02by nikola
20:02soloff by a couple of tenths last year as well so now is the nervous weight for baduair as we're
20:09right on board with ugechukwu did he make a small mistake into rascas yeah he did a kick of oversteer
20:14a bit too greedy on the way in could be towards the end of the finding that peak of grip
20:20on his
20:20sopirelli tire but to me just a little bit too greedy and he did make contact with the barrier
20:25there chris yep slight contact but i tell you what i don't know if that was three and a half
20:30tenths of
20:30baduair looks so so quick and unbeatable it will still be a second row start for ugechukwu we find
20:36out which side of the grid he'll be on at the end of the next group the top six then
20:39crucially uh baduair
20:42ugechukwu tapanen del pino stromsted hiyu yamakoshi will be on the front row of the grid for the sprint
20:47race and tito kato alice as you point out just missed out he will now be on row seven for
20:53both
20:54races and that's the difference in finishing sixth place or seventh place yes that that's a as we've
21:01talked about if you can't challenge for pole you need to try and be in that top six and again
21:05louis
21:05sharp last year he just missed out on top six in his group and he's eighth in this one who's
21:10missed
21:10out again just like they did last year roading motorsport will have a car on the front row this
21:15time it's italian's brando baduair 124.612 ugo ugechukwu second to katapanen in third solid for
21:24qualifying for him bruno del pino right up there again in fourth noah stromsted fifth iyu yamakoshi
21:30for van amasville racing will be on the front row for the sprint race and taito kato louis sharp
21:35nando woodbrin and bacti brad benavides and you'll be disappointed to be down in tenth canato lee
21:4011th matteo de paolo in 12th place jose garfield 13th finn mclaughlin we saw him pick up front wing
21:47damage coming down towards 48 14th for him fernando barichello will be on row 15 for both races
21:55now just seeing here that uh incident involving bruno del pino will be investigated after the session for
22:01leaving the track and gaining an advantage he's currently fourth place so we'll see if anything
22:07comes of that but crash arm it off ugechukwu i think may may be slightly disappointed he missed out
22:15on that front row and a possible pole position but nevertheless got to stay consistent and the
22:20championship leader has got himself a road to start for rompree sunday yeah exactly that
22:27he's still like of course it's hard to overtake here yeah it's the hardest track to overtake on the
22:34formula 3 calendar but there will still be opportunities we saw from how exciting and
22:40thrilling the races were in formula 3 here last year there will be opportunities i'm sure
22:47for ugechukwu at times of course we've got the the sprint race can he move forward in that but
22:53solid job from bad aware huge hugely impressive as we said to go three and a half tenths quicker
22:59around such a short lap like this like that is that is that's impressive and there is confirmation of
23:07dalpino for being under investigation for leaving the track and gaining advantage which should turn
23:1210 that's a nouvelle chicane so likely he's had a small lock up since dalpino and then gone across
23:20the chicane just going back to bad aware i mean he looks a completely different driver this year he had
23:26a bit of a difficult run of things at times in that first season he did but ninth place in
23:31qualifying at
23:31the first round now he's going to be second at worst what do you think it is for for a
23:37driver is it
23:38just coming back in for a second season a lot of the hard work in the off season he's looked
23:43like
23:43he's got so much confidence now and uh looking like the driver we saw in the f4 categories the
23:49formula regional categories that was a consistent podium finish once again no i think exactly that
23:54he's this is second season of course in in formula three so using that vital experience track knowledge
24:00knowing from last year okay in free practice the track felt like this felt green felt dusty and then
24:06how much it ramped up for for qualifying using that that having that experience uga chukwu is the same
24:13clearly using his his experience and a knowledge of the circuit is vital because of course this is not
24:18a track that they can just rock up and test to like maybe some of the other circuits like barcelona
24:22they get plenty of of laps on red bull ring there was a test a few weeks ago so having
24:28that knowledge
24:28and experience and clearly a good car underneath him as well road in motorsport had a strong showing here
24:34with uh calum voicing and roman belinski last year so they clearly have a good package around here but
24:39as well as we've already touched on soda campos racing with taking the overall pole last year
24:45yeah absolutely so and it's been great for great for road in motorsport in general recently hasn't it
24:51someone you work very closely with yourself alice abby pulling getting a her first win in the gb3
24:57championship as well great result for her someone we could possibly see racing in this championship
25:02yeah who knows maybe one day she'll be joining uh this grid of drivers a strong grid of drivers
25:08yeah i think this is probably the toughest feeder series championship on the planet 30 drivers that
25:15are so keen to try and make their way up the formal one ladder into formula two of course which
25:20we also
25:20have on the support bill that will be seen later on today and it's so competitive we could just see
25:25from from the lap times of how close it is in that previous group session a tenth at one stage
25:32of a
25:33second separating the top five but then if you're taking out bad aware and uga chukwu you look at tapan
25:37and del pino strom said all within a tenth of a second and that can be from just having a
25:43you know a small
25:44lock up a small mistake can can easily lose you that and and cost you several places and of course
25:50red bull ring
25:50is is going to be the next uh uh adventure in a couple of races time for for these drivers
25:56and
25:56we've seen how close it can can get there and at barcelona as well which is the next round yeah
26:01i
26:01think it's widely agreed isn't it that the formula three championship is the toughest
26:06here with a good season your career can completely change and i think we've seen examples of that uh with
26:13the like server gabriel bortoletto for example when he took the win in this championship and look at how
26:19well he is doing and now a lot of the graduates who have gone through to f1 it's been formula
26:25three
26:25where they really really got going oscar piastri is another example had a really tough fight to
26:30win the championship there leo fornaroli as well winning the championship at the last corner in the
26:36last lap so i think if you have a good season here your career can completely change it certainly can
26:41and
26:42of course a lot of the hard work by these drivers is done before they even get to the track
26:47yeah working with the with their teams back at base using the simulator using the team's knowledge
26:52you've got to look at the fantastic teams that we do have in the championship campus for art
26:59high-tech trident so on you know they've all had experience winning at the top level in whether it's
27:06formula two formula three so using and trusting the team using their knowledge their experience their
27:12years of data gathering and of course most importantly diving down and learning these circuits
27:17because we've got plenty of rookies around here that have never stepped foot in a formula three car
27:23or any car around this circuit so utilizing their experience and knowledge for when you do come to
27:30the circuit you're going to get 45 minute practice session we can see gets easily disrupted as we see
27:34drivers still trying to find a bit of space on track you want to step foot on to the track
27:41up to the
27:41circuit and be fully prepared as possible try to deciding to go out of rhythm with the rest freddie
27:48slater podium for him and first round finish second in the beach race and they're just releasing him
27:54from the pit lane now freddie slater uh off he goes so let's go through the field shall we tear
28:00film
28:00now who's quickest yesterday took pole at the first round the cal grand prix winner of course
28:05onesto rivera in for this one he missed the first round due to injury but he's back for the rest
28:11of
28:11the season freddie slater we've got matthia kilnaghi in the seven alessandro giusti experience here
28:16he's in the nine then matchy guadish very impressive first round enzo deligne podium for him on his debut
28:22at the first round pedro clero christian ho the other road in motorsport drivers christian ho did miss
28:27in season testing though due to academic reasons wharton is okay after his incident yesterday and he's out
28:33there on track in the red and white frame wuxian shin jim nakamura and then we've got yevon david
28:39the sri lankan what a proud weekend uh for him and his country he's out there competing nicola
28:44lacorte and gerard chi so all these drivers can do now alice is watch on and see which which row
28:49of
28:50the grid or which side of the grid rather uh they will start on and the time to beat is
28:54a 124.6
28:55it is we could see that ugo was already having a bit of a debrief with his campos racing team
29:01watching
29:01on on the pit wall it is they've done their job now so uh some of them may be certainly
29:06by the way
29:07it might be a little bit nervous and hoping that no one beats uh his time but there's nothing that
29:14they can do it's all down to this group b that's on track and i think it's going to be
29:19an exciting
29:19group taylor phil now who took of course full position in melbourne you've got freddie slater
29:26cole naghi giusty we've got a strong showing of drivers again in in this group who can challenge
29:34for for race wins and can certainly challenge the whole position i mean is there ever a preference
29:38as to which group i mean going out in the second group i guess you know what time to be
29:42but in the
29:42first group you're kind of putting the pressure on uh the second group isn't it it's uh it's it's hard
29:48to
29:48say which one would be a preference what about yourself from the second group you know you you
29:53know what time you're aiming for of course they're all going to try and go as fast as you can
29:56but
29:57they know right okay we've got to be a 124.612 set by that man there okay yeah let's do
30:04that let's
30:05let's get on let's get crack on the tracks gonna be in better condition of course if the weather stays
30:08the same and track temperature and air temperature is pretty much exactly the same as it was 15 minutes ago
30:15so you've got a better track condition yeah group group b is is the way forward however of course
30:21it was destructive last year and it was group a that took the fastest time so it's even though the
30:28track could be in better condition if things don't go away with the yellow flags red flags which is what
30:32we got last year then uh that would be your chances gone looks like we're still going through some
30:38warm-up laps it seems this period is extended around this circuit before we get going and that session
30:44a very clean session wasn't it building up all the way through the fastest lap from several of the
30:49drivers came on the very last lap that's something these drivers will be aware of those that are
30:54qualifying here for the first time which is several of them out there it's not high brake wear it's not
31:00high tyre usage downforce levels are high but as you can see the minimum speeds are low top speeds are
31:09not nowhere near what we will reach at any other circuits so that is why we see the drivers doing
31:15an out one two three track laps at minimum at two of course we saw it in the in the
31:21last session
31:21and just building up that tyre temperature you're trying to get the core temperature up first
31:27instead of going out and getting that the the surface temperature sorry too high before you've got
31:35the core temperature up that you'll just need to to graining and that's the last thing you want around
31:40this circuit because then once you've got those tyres grained up and you've not bought them in correctly
31:45you've got to run this set of tyre again whether that be for the sprint race tomorrow or the feature
31:51race on sunday they get three sets of soft tyres across this weekend because they wouldn't use
31:58this set in free practice so one for qualifying and then a brand new set to use as they wish
32:04and
32:04most people may opt to use it for for the feature race particularly if starting uh in a good position
32:09but of course if you're on pole let's say for the sprint race you may opt to to throw the
32:13new tyres on
32:14there yeah he yamakoshi good example of that but again in the top six remember to be included uh in
32:19that reverse grid for the sprint race right we're watching the tearfield now at speed now pushing
32:25down the hill he goes this is going to be the benchmark time on the board tearfield now will be
32:30the
32:30first one to set it yes so i accept again this is not going to be a challenge for for
32:36the lap times that
32:36we saw in the previous session this will still be uh a faster build than previous so even though it's
32:43purple of course the timing has has reset but looking at the sectors it's still not uh going to challenge
32:50for pole position 24.6 one two could come down to to those very last figures let's find out as
33:01we go
33:01through the session tearfield now heading up to to back now you've just got to stay in the session
33:06that's another thing i think the driver's going to have talked about do not end your session early
33:10because you will get quicker every level you know the track is going to be at the very end of
33:14the
33:14session so saving the best till last as we said tyre drop off is not huge here compared to other
33:20circuits that we see barcelona for example as the next race on the calendar that tyre drop off that you've
33:27got to get the peak in in barcelona and it's going to the peak will be there for a lap
33:32or two and then
33:33if you haven't set it in those first couple of push laps then you're really going to struggle to get
33:38anything out of the tyre whereas here it's not as bad uh track evolution is huge here so making sure
33:45you're still on track at the end of the session those final dying minutes with nice clear track space
33:50it is is important as well as you can see first time on the ball for tayo phil nile or
33:56125.729 still
33:58just over a second to find but he has eight minutes left to do it yeah everyone's going to be
34:03coming
34:03over just to as you said set those quicker build-up laps if you like 125.7 is our benchmark
34:10we're working
34:11with in this session 124.612 the fastest overall and alessandro justy just having a bit of a cool down
34:18lap it seems now before going again yep so making sure you've got some nice space letting the tyres
34:25cool ever so slightly don't want to have to keep doing pushing consecutive push laps maybe in free
34:31practice to to get yourself up to to speed lovely shots around this circuit is really one of the
34:41most challenging in terms of layouts but one that uh is always highlighted on every driver's calendar
34:47freddie slater is out of rhythm with the rest isn't he not not in sync with the rest of the
34:52field
34:52has gone a little bit later in the session and it looks like he's going to go for his next
34:58flying lap
34:58now drs open freddie slater audi junior heading towards the start to finish line half a lap up the
35:06road matcha kwadish is going purple through the first sector he is an art actually a team that have just
35:12got rookies lined up for around particularly around this circuit none of their drivers have raced around
35:18here so art needing to give all their experience to to their drivers vanish at the moment fastest of
35:26anyone in the first sector let's have a look at where freddie slater comes to him he's just snatched
35:29that fastest first sector away and for reference as well slater 23.243 in the first sector but
35:37bad aware's first sector was a 22.9 so again still a few tents to find in that first sector
35:44but as i
35:44said that tafel 9 or 23 0 in that first sector so the times are coming chris they really are
35:51let's
35:51watch her kwadish across first you see how close he is to the barriers he really is pushing the limits
35:57out there is the polish driver up to the line he comes now and he goes fastest 125.575 still
36:04six minutes
36:05on the clock that would give him a front row start for sunday freddie slater next having a big swapper
36:11on coming through the swimming pool section there freddie slater really pushing the limits halfway
36:16through this session through raskas now and up towards the final corner where will this put the
36:21british driver he heads out of anthony nogues riding the curve on the exit there up to the line he
36:27comes
36:28now freddie slater let's see where this puts him purple through the last sector 124.9 he was wrestling with
36:34the car there though wow certainly was all out of shapes in the swimming pool section but till
36:39taylor nile i expect to now jump up into p1 very strong first and second sector he doesn't
36:45lost some time not even a personal best in that last sector and riviera who missed of course the
36:52first race at melbourne due to injury has stuck at p2 in his campus racing machine yeah the red bull
36:58junior going up to second place alessandro giusti we ride on board with him now heading up towards
37:04raskas you can see hooking the curve through the left there this is where we saw ugachiku go wide on
37:09the brakes on his last flying lap that looked very nice and tidy from giusti on the curve on the
37:15exit
37:15there every time you watch him come through there you think you're going to see contact with the
37:19barriers alessandro giusti second place and look how close it is once again we saw this in the first group
37:24aless one and a half tenths between the top four very close it was very close at this stage wasn't
37:30it in the last group but then by the end it wasn't as close so as they just now do
37:35another cool down
37:36lap gather themselves again maybe a bit of space finding out there too but they all seem to be
37:41fairly evenly spread to to be honest but uh it's gonna catch a replay let's have a look this is
37:50um
37:50chin yeah getting all out of shapes on the exit for turn 16 maybe a bit too green this is
37:56a slater
37:56moment that was heart and mouth stuff i mean i have to say maybe from that angle it doesn't look
38:00as
38:00bad the rear the rear facing angle looked at look worse but freddy had it all under control i'm sure
38:06and it was still fast enough to go p1 yeah through the new bell chicane that was slowed down wasn't
38:13it
38:13so sometimes just see if they're managing to wrestle the car that much they're doing a great job so
38:19we've had our cool down laps uh now we're getting ready to go once again we're just looking at gradish
38:25who has slowed down uh he was pushing and we're just hearing he's made a mistake through the casino
38:30section i think we're going to see it now alice oh wow tell you what that's a good save very
38:37good save
38:37so a bit too greedy on the way into massinate and the rear was stepping out and he managed to
38:42gather
38:43it together before he hit the wall in casino but a driver that is finding his way round quite quickly
38:49the monaco circuit is freddy slater but it looked like he had a kick of over oh he touched the
38:52wall
38:53yep contact with the barrier will that have damaged his suspension i wonder he certainly chipped a bit of
38:57the front wing off freddy slater has got his foot down still and up towards the tunnel out of it
39:03into the
39:03nouvelle chicane he's just looking at his mirrors just trying to assess the car it seems there uh
39:08and he's gone straight on the chicane and i was just about to say he was looking fast but he
39:12did have
39:12a kick of oversteer in turn six at the hairpin and then just a bit too greedy on the way
39:17in at seven
39:17and he's hit the wall damage to his front wing i know that would have 100 knocked his steering out
39:22slightly and you could see he he had to abandon but theophile now that's not stopping him now he's in
39:28the 22s
39:29he's matched the fastest first sector of our pole sitter in group a in that first sector and it's
39:35a decent middle sector as well from theophil now yeah four and a half tenths up this looks like it'll
39:39be good enough to take overall pole position round the final section he comes now through raskas through
39:46anthony nodes and he hits the barrier on the exit does tell you phil now up to the line he
39:50will go now
39:51has he picked up damage we'll find out but that's going to be good enough to take overall pole position
39:56124.522 is now the new time to beat but we've had two drivers make contact with the barriers and
40:04they're two of our championship front runners in tailfield now and freddie slater looking back
40:10at another road in motorsport driver now pedro claro bad aware went fastest in the first group claro up to
40:17p5 remember gotta get in that top six and look how close the fight for p6 as now between g
40:22and nakamura
40:23it is so it's just missing on that replay the kick of oversteer he had and just actually just got
40:28some understeer so miss clipping that inside curb maybe turned in a fraction too late you want to try
40:34and kiss some of that inside curb at turn seven and there's theophil nile rushing the barrier lucky to
40:43to escape with any real damage and you saw freddie how it damaged his front wing in his Spanish
40:48oh and uh that's a heavier contact we saw that from la corte didn't we in in free practice and
40:55how
40:55that damaged and he might have escaped there but he's down in 11th at the moment brady slater let's
41:00have a look he's still on a slow lap so i wonder if he's just circulating now he's like look
41:06i just need
41:06to stay out of here i've got got damage but you would have thought if you did have damage you
41:11would
41:11box to save the tire so maybe he he did make a mistake early on when trying to push again
41:16but
41:17justy now a personal best in the first sector it's still a tenth of a second away that's set by
41:22table yeah this is i think going to be his final flying lap he's approaching some traffic i think ahead
41:28but looks nice and tidy through the chicane up towards to back he goes now this is where we just
41:35saw
41:35Gwadish make contact with the barriers used he's through there cleanly but he's slower uh this
41:40through the second sector yeah no personal best for him as he goes through you can see oh here we
41:47go traffic as i say there's a the flag the white board flashing and there's a lot of people queuing
41:54and we'll have some angry people i expect come on the radio this should be cleared by the time
41:59Gwadish comes down into loraskas and it has so a clean exit potentially for him through there
42:05if he can personal best in the first not in the middle sector though wow very close to the barrier
42:09on the exit match a Gwadish up to the line he goes now and it's going to be p7 he
42:14will not be on the
42:16front row for the sprint race tomorrow that is currently going to be gerard g unless the likes of
42:21nakamoto or ho can improve freddie slater a couple of hundreds off the fastest first sector set by
42:27tearfield now even with a little bit of his front wing missing and a knock on the front left it's
42:32a
42:33looking so far a very strong map for freddie slater he was so close he's purple there in the middle
42:37sector freddie slater the audi junior making his way out of the swimming pool section and he makes
42:42slight contact with the barrier too much speed it seemed to be carried into there right what about
42:47raskas and anthony gnocchi's giving it absolutely everything now is freddie slater out of the final
42:52corner he goes drs open could this be enough to take pole position away from tearfield no no he lost
42:59time through that last sector and it will be a second row start for freddie slater p3 for the
43:04feature race and pole position is going to go to tearfield nile quickest overall unless unless his
43:10teammate behind ernesto rivera can beat him third place for rivera on his first qualifying session in
43:17formula three that is very impressive but it seems it will be back to back pole positions for frenchman
43:24tearfield nile and campos racing watching on what a session for them yeah brilliant session for them
43:30and they're still nervously watching on but just looking at the time and see there's going to be no
43:34one out there at the moment challenging so tearful nile what a job three tenths of a second i think
43:39that
43:39would have been closer i think freddie slater would have been challenging that for sure if he didn't make
43:44that mistake out of the chicane i think he's brushed every side of the car against the barrier there his
43:49trying machine has freddie slater but that was a superb lap for tearfield nile to take overall pole
43:56position for the feature race on sunday we've never had a french driver win in fia formula 3 monaco
44:05what a result it would be for tearfield nile he scored two points on the first round from pole he's
44:09got
44:10two more it was a comfortable pole as well four tenths quicker than the rest of the field he's
44:30becoming a street circuit expert isn't he don't feel not he has qualified 23rd here last year we're
44:38going to get some more replays of drivers getting up close and personal to the barriers but just again
44:45second year driver showing their experience their track knowledge where to sufficiently can see
44:51gerard he's making contact with the barrier getting caught up in traffic at that final chicane and
44:57here freddie slater he almost is looking at the barrier as he's heading towards it making small
45:03contact so that'll be that car will be going on the patch to make sure it's all ready for tomorrow
45:08i mean that was precision on the way in yeah i think that's why he ran wide maybe he looked
45:13like
45:13he just brushed the barrier and that sent him over the curb possibly but you can't say he didn't try
45:18he was
45:19over the edge through the final sector wasn't he but tearfield nile will take two points for pole
45:24and he will lead us away on grand prix sunday what a result that will be for him he will
45:29start alongside
45:30brando baddeware row two will be slater and ugachuku row three will be rivera and tapinen and then we
45:37will have giusti del pino clero and strongstead gerard g and yamakoshi they'll flip round so hiu yamakoshi
45:44will be pole for the sprint race with gerard g alongside yep and i'm excited as always for for
45:51the races but how this season is developing and informally okay we've only had one one round but
45:58we've got some solid drivers that are going to be battling out at the front in this feature race on
46:05sunday but an exciting sprint race to come before that tomorrow yes back-to-back polls for campus racing
46:11here at this circuit as well uh nikola solov taking pole here last year tearfield nile what a driver
46:18he is becoming he had a solid first season last year took the mccall grand prix win in the off
46:24season and now he's taken both pole positions so far a great chance to put 25 points on the board
46:31straight away slater will be row two of the grid the audi junior that body language says to me that
46:38freddie slater's pretty disappointed yeah with that session but i have to say for his first qualifying
46:44session around the streets of monaco he shouldn't be too disappointed but he would probably feels we
46:51can see how alan guignish hugging some of the trident guys down there in the pit lane he probably feels
46:55that
46:56he could challenge he could have challenged the pole that could have been he was up compared to theo
47:01phil nile but there's still opportunities to come tomorrow and on sunday
47:07art just missing out on the front row again matcha guadish was seventh in that one of course we saw
47:13kato
47:13seventh in his group so here it is hiu yamakoshi van amersport got a one two at the season opener
47:19in
47:20the sprint race with del pino and deligny and they've got a chance to add another win
47:24to their books with hiu yamakoshi yeah and he's done the first part of the job now need to try
47:31and
47:31get this formula three car off the line in the streets of monaco they're looking a great outfit
47:37this season van amersport racing leading the team's championship for the first time and they can extend
47:43that lead tomorrow that is qualifying complete teofil nile will take pole position freddie slater will be
47:51third place along just behind him on the grid ernesto rivera uh will be on row three gsd row four
47:57pedro clero row five gerard g will be on the front row for the sprint race with hiu yamakoshi
48:03alongside him on pole matcha guadish just misses out two row seven starts for him gene nakamura
48:08in eighth place nicola la corte ninth place for him and christian ho then we had enzo deligny
48:14yevan david james water down in 13th of course missed pretty much all of practice yesterday
48:19material naghi 14 wuxian shin rounds out the field we did see a couple of uh investigations coming in so
48:28as ever it is always a provisional result keep an eye on the socials for any updates there but that
48:34is all
48:34for qualifying the spring race will be at 10 45 tomorrow 23 laps of racing hiu yamakoshi and gerard
48:43g will lead us away from the front roads pole position once again for teofil nile on grand prix
48:49sunday make sure you join myself chris mccarthy and alice tau tomorrow
49:09so
49:15so
