00:00:00Sebastian Ajo Carlson second power play group on for John Tortorella they have
00:00:1120 seconds left a man up Carlson past Anderson the defenseman who was in deep
00:00:17rimmed around the length of the ice by Slavin and Theodore's on it
00:00:27no shot attempts on this power play Rasmus Anderson in for howden how it has
00:00:34three goals in these first two games power play has expired here Stan Colvin
00:00:42with Robinson Slavin when heading to the net slave in the defenseman in deep
00:00:47sends it to an open corner Theodore first they're content to clear it
00:00:53Paul tried to send it back in that was stopped by his fellow number 71 Carlson
00:00:59and now they're offside
00:01:04336 to go second period Brenda Moore and the Canes down to it and I think on two goals
00:01:21I hope I've always each year I've tried to become a better listener I think especially now with today's
00:01:28athletes I think it needs to be more collaborative X's and O's are X's and O's the mind is the
00:01:34most
00:01:34important thing I think with today's athlete and the way the game is played
00:01:39Tortorella was happy with his wife and his rescue horses when he wasn't working but when Vegas called it was
00:01:44an offer
00:01:45he couldn't turn off he told me he doesn't feel like he still has something to prove it's more so
00:01:49that he just absolutely
00:01:50loves to compete and in one of his first meetings with a team he told them
00:01:54I'm not here to coach at you I'm here to coach with you and a couple of the guys told
00:01:59me that went a really long way
00:02:01in the first game Noah Hannafin had a struggle with a
00:02:04struggle of a game and about eight minutes left
00:02:06Tortorella goes down gets his arms around his shoulders and says we need you you've got to be better
00:02:11but we need you you see him have a little smile with Colton Sissons there
00:02:14that's not John Tortorella from 20 years ago or 10 years ago that's Tortorella of 26
00:02:23Unlike most Bostonians he gets kinder and gentler as he ages hope for them all
00:02:32Hope for you all

00:02:48The game one win was the most days between head coaching wins in a Stanley Cup final of all time
00:02:55Tortorella went eight thousand and 28 days between his game seven win
00:03:03And they won the Stanley Cup final in Tampa against Calgary 2004 to the win two nights ago
00:03:11Wasn't sure he'd ever get an opportunity again
00:03:14That he did when he got the call
00:03:17From Vegas management and ownership eight games to go in the regular season
00:03:23They've won 20 of the 25 games he has coached since
00:03:29Pushing and shoving after the puck was covered
00:03:32Hasn't been much of this in the first couple of games and
00:03:37You might see
00:03:39Carolina try to agitate a little bit that's not really what they normally do
00:03:43But things haven't gone their way very well here in the first couple of games
00:03:47Six shots only in the second period they're fighting like heck
00:03:51To create a shot to get into the middle of the ice and
00:03:55Aho gives
00:03:56Hannafin a little shove Svechnikov and
00:03:59Hannafin start defense and
00:04:01Everybody joins the group it's been a it's been a struggle for a carolina team sean that
00:04:07Generate shot attempt after shot attempt most nights
00:04:11It's not been that way they cannot get the puck to carter hard here in game two
00:04:19Theodore pitched it ahead they're going to keep trying that it has worked for them in these playoffs
00:04:25including tonight
00:04:27And a beautiful blob by Marner sent howden away for the first goal
00:04:33Marner lobs it into the left wing corner
00:04:36How did it on the four check he ran into walker carlson?
00:04:40They're trying to help for vegas nearing two and a half minutes to go in the second period
00:04:47Vegas swept colorado
00:04:50With the number one team in the western conference number one in the entire league in point total won the
00:04:54president's trophy
00:04:56In the regular season vegas swept them in four in the western conference final
00:05:01Carolina best in the eastern conference
00:05:05In vegas one game one here they lead two to nothing in game two in raleigh tonight
00:05:13Look at this vegas defensive talking about six shots in the period tough getting the puck to the middle of
00:05:18the ice
00:05:19They work and they hold the puck but look at the vegas fivesome in front of carter hard
00:05:24You can't drive a pin in there. There's nowhere to go
00:05:28So where does carolina go around the outside?
00:05:30Nowhere in the middle. There's jeremy lozong. He's got a markup over his left eye. He took a
00:05:35Check up there. He's playing much more minutes without brayden mcnab in the lineup
00:05:40There's another player toward rosa didn't realize how good he was until he coached him. They missed him for that
00:05:45month that he was out
00:05:48Here's chat field two minutes to go on the period
00:05:52Caroline in desperate need of the next goal
00:05:56Jarvis back to the line shot back in by slave and it hopped over the stick of stall
00:06:02Stahl
00:06:03Stahl behind the net
00:06:05Chatfield the defenseman and along the goal line
00:06:08Ehlers covers for his spot up high chatfield that in hannifin and it's sent the length of the ice by
00:06:15marner
00:06:16He'll take the icing call with vegas trapped and on its heels
00:06:211 33 to go in the second period
00:06:24The one thing that zone time can do is wear down the defense five some of the
00:06:31Golden Knights. There's john stevens talking to low zone and it might not
00:06:35Be generating much right now, but make them defend make them be on their heels as much as you can
00:06:41and drive the minutes
00:06:43Up high for the defense of vegas
00:06:47Miller sends it for svechnikoff picked off by marner. They would just like to get off in all likelihood
00:06:53They've been on for more than a minute and a half. It is a line change. They're trying to get
00:06:57caught in it
00:06:58Here's a home and that stopped by heart
00:07:02Carolina alerts of the line change took off got a good opportunity
00:07:06A lot more chances tonight for this top line
00:07:09But still nothing behind carter hart and the pucks out of the rink with 108 to go in the second
00:07:13period
00:07:14You mentioned those guys are stranded out there for vegas the long change in the second period
00:07:19They're all at the bench
00:07:21And carolinek recognizes and attacks Aho with really his best scoring chance that hart turns the side here
00:07:27There's finally some open room
00:07:30And he ends up getting this a bit to the middle of the net
00:07:32You see hart kind of shake his head as it catches him on the collarbone up under the chin
00:07:38But really the that's about as clean a shot as vegas has had in this period
00:07:48Neither one of these goalies was the starter for more than half of the regular season
00:07:53They both started fewer than half the games
00:07:57freddie anderson and carter hart 53
00:08:00Combined games of the regular season the lowest total of the starting goalies in a stanley cup
00:08:07Game one. They're both in there again tonight. Here's eichel
00:08:12With down insistence trailing and then eichel lost the puck near the dot
00:08:15Headman dispatched the cop by miller martin hook with aho again
00:08:22Now eichel walled off a ho doubt trying to run it down
00:08:28Another good late season pickup. He just turned 37 years old
00:08:32He got knocked off the buckle on the near boards and down to 36 seconds in the second period
00:08:42Miller for stank oven spins past barter
00:08:47Inside the line hall in deeper behind the net but nobody there in black
00:08:51noah hannathan
00:08:54Gloved down by stone ran into a couple of hurricanes
00:08:59Most notably slaven who's now defending stone behind the net 10 seconds in the period
00:09:04And vegas get another opportunity chatfield blocked the martyr pass four seconds in the period
00:09:11And vegas will take a two nothing lead for the final 20 minutes
00:09:17Brett howden both goals tonight
00:09:20For the golden knights
00:09:22First time they've been scoreless through two periods carolina in
00:09:2549 games they're not used to this
00:09:30Here's steve levy
00:09:33All right sean thank you
00:09:34And the anxiousness that we felt in the building before the game started
00:09:39We'll continue on with mark messier and p.k.
00:09:42Subban i know what you guys are thinking yet
00:09:44You have to think we have not had a sweep in the stanley cup final in 28 years
00:09:48I know there's a lot of hockey to be played
00:09:51A lot of hockey i get it but vegas looks pretty dominant and carolina can't buy a goal
00:09:55Yeah, well carolina's got to take advantage of the fact vegas got 5d
00:09:59You have to find a way to wear those guys down they haven't been able to do that on the
00:10:04flip side
00:10:04Vegas has been able to expose a couple guys on carolina's defense
00:10:08Especially the smaller guys goss is baron walker they're putting them in positions where they're always on the back side
00:10:15Of the forwards you got to be better positionally if you're going to be a smaller guy and play defense
00:10:20in the stanley cup finals
00:10:22You've got to be positionally sound they haven't been good enough vegas is just so impressive leaves
00:10:26They just don't have any weaknesses and they just keep coming out
00:10:29There's never a drop-off from line to line they can put so much pressure on you on all areas
00:10:34of the ice
00:10:34They defend the middle of the ice as well as anybody in the in the league obviously they're here
00:10:39But i'm to every player that comes out there every line there plays the same way they're so patient so
00:10:45big so strong and
00:10:48We're going to say it so well coached
00:10:50Yeah, they are just when you thought they couldn't get better, right?
00:10:54I mean they just swept the colorado avalanche and look what they're doing to carolina
00:10:592-0 vegas on our way to the third meanwhile at t-mobile at their watch party just off the
00:11:05strip by
00:11:06We'll be there on saturday night get ready for the discover second intermission report
00:11:16They're on the first of doing something they've dreamt about their entire lifetime
00:11:26The silver trophy to the golden knights devastation just the heartbreak for the players
00:11:38Ladies and gentlemen
00:11:40Ladies and gentlemen
00:11:40The Stanley Cup
00:11:50Allison
00:11:51I want to say no
00:11:53I want to say no
00:11:54I want to let go
00:11:55Not going in
00:11:57Don't you know
00:11:58I want to shine
00:12:00No
00:12:01I want to let go
00:12:13this is the Stanley Cup final on ABC presented by Geico game two from Raleigh
00:12:18North Carolina Vegas leading two to nothing trying to go up two games to
00:12:22none in this series as you look at the stats through two periods quite a bit
00:12:28different from what we saw in game one where the two teams combined for nine
00:12:33goals through three periods Ray Rod Brendamore's team has solved a lot of
00:12:38the problems that plagued them in game one they've been much more sound
00:12:42defensively and with the puck but now they can't score part of the problem is
00:12:46Vegas solved a lot of the problems that created some of the Carolina offense too
00:12:50I think at least I did I thought this would be a tight checking no room series
00:12:54that's really what's happened tonight there has been key moments in the game
00:12:59like many Vegas wins and Vegas has won those key moments Carolina hasn't won
00:13:05enough of them they trail here on two Brett Howden goals they've got to find a way to
00:13:12punch through Jarvis starts with stall and Ehlers
00:13:19two goals tonight for Howden 13 total that leads the postseason and it ties the single playoff Vegas
00:13:29record established by Jonathan Marchessault when they won the cup in 2023 here's Emily Kaplan well I
00:13:35caught up with Rod Brendamore right after he addressed the team and the message was stick with it you cannot
00:13:40create something that's not fair that's where we got in trouble when you're
00:13:44trying to create something and we forced turnovers and we gave them two goals
00:13:48quote out of nothing they were freebies so just get back to what we do play
00:13:52Canes hockey scan the screen to opt-in to breaking news alerts from Emily on the
00:13:58ESPN app stay up to date on NHL news throughout the Stanley Cup final I think it's
00:14:05important when people say you know why don't you make a change why don't you
00:14:09adjust you can't reinvent your team you can only be what you are Carolina's a
00:14:14pressure team and they have to find a way to pressure Vegas's five defensemen
00:14:20puck skated out by Dorothea that's pitched in by Barbashev and Anderson will hang on
00:14:28yeah they play the way they play and it's worked very well obviously eight straight
00:14:34years in the playoffs won a playoff series at least one in each of those years and in
00:14:38the Stanley Cup final after their fourth trip to the Eastern Conference final at
00:14:42eight years under Rod Brindamore I mean you look at the game here they've given up
00:14:4611 shots they've spent zero time in their end except Brett Howden has made two
00:14:51spectacular individual plays and it's two nothing so what are you gonna change
00:14:57well they've changed their lines here they flipped Martinuk and Jarvis and they
00:15:01hope they can get something out of Bajo and Svechnikoff Svechnikoff has just been
00:15:06silent in these two games Marta directs it in and how unlikely the multi-goal game for
00:15:15Howden he's had two in his career in the regular season in 489 career games but he's done it
00:15:23five times now in the playoffs in 61 games
00:15:28the best a lot of guys rise to the occasion in the postseason
00:15:42DeAndre Miller to Chatfield
00:15:49played along by Coghlan Coghlan's played less than eight minutes through two periods they've
00:15:56essentially played with four defensemen since Braden McNabb left the game after taking a shot in
00:16:01the face a hard shot from Nikolai Ehlers to hit him in the face he left about midway through the
00:16:08first period
00:16:09so it's basically been the foursome of Anderson and Hannafin Lausanne and Theodore this will be an
00:16:18icing call against Carolina now Vegas has talked about the importance and the must of block shots
00:16:26and they've had 18 of them watch Dylan Coghlan there's part of your eight minutes
00:16:30he takes a goal away from Carolina in the first period but as much as Carolina shoots the puck they've
00:16:36had 50 shot attempts they can't get it to the net the Vegas defensive forwards do an excellent job
00:16:42of denying those initial shots and you have to keep shooting it because that's how you generate your
00:16:48offense you have to retrieve it and now you have to shoot it again it's going to be a hard
00:16:53work blue
00:16:54caller approach for Carolina Sean if they can get one maybe you loosen up Vegas's defense but right now
00:17:01it's a mud pile in front of the net there's nowhere to go down on the face off back to
00:17:06Anderson Anderson
00:17:08fetched the cup defending without a stick Anderson sidestepped him Cole Smith passed it up
00:17:13Lozada shot stopped by Anderson and played away by Ajo but not out Colas are looking for a tip
00:17:19down get knocked out it's free and cleared away from the net front by Jalen Chatfield
00:17:26and played out by Svechnikoff Vegas not sitting on the lead they're attacking
00:17:33and John Tortorella said that before the series began we're not here to
00:17:37counter punch we're here to inflict
00:17:40this is the best way to defend right you got your fourth line on the ice
00:17:44you forecheck and you get people to the net Dowd is in front of the net as Colasar's shots deflected
00:17:49now he's in a battle with Chatfield Anderson's got to try to cover it
00:17:53and as much as you're talking about this being for forecheck
00:17:57it's really a proxy for defense you're not defending you're playing in the other end but you're really
00:18:02defending the lead Dorothea played it back Theodore that missed the net Eichel on it off the back wall
00:18:09takes a shove from Ajo and the barbershop forced to regroup as he played it back to Coghlan
00:18:19who has it back from Theodore
00:18:23Eichel played it in haphazardly steered away by
00:18:26Anderson knocked out by stall fetched the cough the pass a little bit behind Jarvis
00:18:33skated across by stall but he's by himself on the offensive end
00:18:38down to 17 15 to go third period
00:18:43Carolina had not been scoreless through two periods since January 13th
00:18:49at St. Louis this is their 50th game since then
00:18:53they wound up being shut out that night in St. Louis three to nothing
00:18:58they weren't scoreless through two at home
00:19:01since November 30th against Calgary
00:19:05haven't lost back to back
00:19:08since mid-January
00:19:11Carlson to Marner
00:19:14Marner has some room at the dot
00:19:18pestered by Jarvis who shoves him into the wall
00:19:20Marner keeps the puck trying to get away from Miller now
00:19:24Carlson turns and fires at a good stop by Anderson
00:19:28and it's played ahead by Ehlers
00:19:31Hannafin a good stop of the rush as Stan Colvin tried to break in
00:19:36with another one-on-one battle that one won behind the net by Marner and they get a good scoring
00:19:41chance on it
00:19:42Theodore bats it away as Stan Colvin flipped it toward the slot
00:19:47nearly four minutes gone by
00:19:50in the third period two to nothing vegas
00:19:55in the occasion
00:19:58banked it for Gus despair
00:20:01who scored the goal to tie the game at four in game one but then he was on for the
00:20:06hurdle goal and
00:20:07he blamed himself for not defending very well right before hurdles scored the game winner
00:20:14icing the call against vegas

00:20:33app
00:20:37the crowd's silent they know how important this game is
00:20:42we lose the first two games of a stanley cup final at home you generally do not come back to
00:20:48win the cup
00:20:48robinson put one on net hard stop it robinson wraparound try hard held the post
00:20:57out
00:20:58chat field hard around it past robinson slaven too hard for robinson to stop it behind the net
00:21:06covering at the point jankowski this is the fourth line
00:21:09for carolina slaven
00:21:13everything around the perimeter
00:21:16chat field had a paramoff sissons banked ahead by stone and out
00:21:25slaven waits for the line change
00:21:28and as he touches it a hand pass whistle that's why he was waiting to play the puck
00:21:34face off be to the left of anderson
00:21:37carter hart's been the better goalie again tonight
00:21:39he was uh through the colorado series and while he hasn't had a multitude of shots the ones he's had
00:21:46he's been sharp 16 up and 16 down he's only faced one shot in this third period robinson had a
00:21:53nice
00:21:53chance off the draw right here and hart on a deflected shot on top of it tracked and made a
00:21:59right pad stop
00:22:00excellent again the the goaltending has been a strength for vegas
00:22:05as you mentioned earlier he played less than half of the games the goalie that won the most games for
00:22:10vegas this year is akira schmidt and he's here in a suit he's the third goalie behind aiden hill and
00:22:16carter hart aiden hill was their primary goalie when they won the stanley cup in 2023
00:22:24three sixth time that hart's held the opponent and scored this through two
00:22:29in these playoffs he's trying for his first shutout
00:22:35gasta's bear stretch the cop martin up that's the line aho with svechnikoff and martin nook
00:22:44jarvis not with this top line ordinarily alongside aho and svechnikoff
00:22:51martin doing the work in the corner
00:22:55vegas eight and old in this postseason when leading after two periods and back to the regular
00:22:59season they've won 21 of their last 22 when leading after two the only loss
00:23:05was in overtime at seattle on april 9th and that was the only loss for john tortorella in the eight
00:23:12regular season games he coached after taking over for bruce cassidy
00:23:19he's on with ehlers and stall and hart hangs on to the puck
00:23:29tortorella in the vgk with a two nothing lead the stanley cup final on abc presented by geico
00:23:35geico it feels good to have a winning team it feels good to geico
00:23:42tomorrow it's game two of the nba finals the spurs and the knicks
00:23:47victor wimbignano the spurs had a 14 point lead the third quarter but jalen brunson brought the knicks
00:23:54back to the wind coverage tomorrow night begins at 8 p.m on abc with nba tip-off espn app
00:24:02jalen brunson
00:24:0430 points in game one the next score the last 11 points of that game
00:24:12that was captivating as was game one here this has been nowhere near as wild this game one of the
00:24:19stanley cup
00:24:19final more like what most expected from these two teams who are so adept defensively collectively
00:24:27stall won the face off out there with healers and jarvis
00:24:33it's charvis 30 plus goals in the regular season for the third year in a row
00:24:40they need him to find a way to pot another one he turned it over to barbachev
00:24:47bowed waited waved at barbachev and say don't give it to me i'm going off and then eichel
00:24:52lost the puck at the side of the circle lobbed in by ehlers over the net theodore's there up ahead
00:24:59barbachev couldn't bat it down it'll be geandre miller
00:25:08in his first year here he has had a tremendous first season at age 26 from saint paul minnesota
00:25:19already had a memorable postseason including the arrival of his son cashton
00:25:24here's a takeaway by howden and a blast by marner
00:25:29that winds up out of the rink man another one-on-one effort strength
00:25:35by brett howden this time to create the chance by marner he brings it off the post
00:25:41howden has won this battle from chatfield this shot beats anderson clean and hits the crossbar and
00:25:47goes up into the netting but that's all howden again remember back to that first period
00:25:54voice we heard from tortorella everything's got to go forward
00:25:59it worked quickly murder to howden it's been that way for their chances tonight there's another
00:26:07dan kowski to carry a lofted in the air poked along deeper by robinson he goes in after theodore 12
00:26:16and a half minutes to go
00:26:20and carry a back on
00:26:23long-time member of the golden knights
00:26:26went to the stanley cup final twice with vegas
00:26:29the first year of the franchise's existence and when they won it in 2023
00:26:34goss despair just came on couldn't get to the point in time to keep it in
00:26:38he's forced back by stone up to center ice golf to head by robinson
00:26:43he jumps back to the bench
00:26:45hannepin with martin looks swooping in
00:26:48here's aho's play with a lot of speed tonight had some good chances
00:26:53drops it off for goss despair one-timer indication that hits stone
00:26:58and hopped into the corner played out from there by rasmus anderson
00:27:04now indication
00:27:09goss despair
00:27:12theodore first there aho comes to him it got turned over to mark knock and a pad save made by
00:27:17hart
00:27:19doud
00:27:20high in the air into the zone
00:27:26indication
00:27:29goss despair 33-year-old defenseman here with carolina for his second stint
00:27:35spent some time with arizona
00:27:42and it couldn't be going much better right now for john tortorella ray than it is
00:27:48no there is there is a wall across the vegas blue line and carolina has just not been able to
00:27:55penetrate it and when they do the puck stays on the outside
00:27:59miller sends it toward the net it was tipped by stall and still stopped by hart
00:28:05heeler centers off the stick of barbershop kept in by miller cross ice it comes
00:28:10heeler's hoping for a stall tip he was tied up nicely in front of the net
00:28:16by eichel
00:28:18here's heeler's a blast that one might have hit dorothea miller firing toward an empty net
00:28:24as hart was at the other post then hart for good measure gave stall a whack with his goal stick
00:28:30proud on their feet now as the canes are pressing
00:28:36they have 18 shots on goal their fewest in these playoffs is 23
00:28:42in game one of round two against philadelphia icing against the vgk
00:28:48here's what you can't do first ajo's got a chance to shoot it he pulls up now vegas gets back
00:28:54into that
00:28:55defense shot block it's in the corner the next time they don't take their time miller takes a quick
00:29:01shot deflected by stall excellent pad saved by by hart more traffic quick release quick puck to the net you
00:29:10can't let vegas get into the house and clog up the middle two really good chances late with quick shots
00:29:17by carolina
00:29:35and that puck is deflected into the carolina bench
00:29:49more than midway through the third period
00:29:53concern on the faces of the hurricanes understandably so they're down two to nothing in game two
00:30:06we gotta advance the puck we're trying to too many bumping it back to your partner advance the puck
00:30:22good boys we're playing well we're playing good here boys
00:30:29john tornorella brett howden wearing microphones tonight well placed mike on howden he has both goals
00:30:39for the midway through the third period
00:30:45one scoring chance in each of the last two periods
00:30:49for carolina vegas on lockdown defensively it's jander that front and they score logan stank
00:31:05coven
00:31:06carolina on the board and a long way to go 9 40 remaining
00:31:17we talked about not waiting not defaulting to the point and looking for a shot this is all
00:31:24logan stank coven that is one of those hundreds of one-on-one battles i was talking about
00:31:30he beats rasmus anderson this puck defects deflects off of jeremy lowzone
00:31:36but the energy and effort of stank coven has put carolina back in this game too it's 2-1
00:31:47tough break for carter hart that caroms in off his defenseman
00:31:52stank coven just 5'8 165 pounds but boy does he do great work around the net front
00:32:00he got his stick underneath anderson he wins the puck and then wraps it in you see it bounce off
00:32:06of
00:32:06low zone the discussion with anderson and tortorella is that what did anderson see why didn't he
00:32:12release the puck around the boards he clearly didn't think he had an out and in that moment
00:32:17stank coven stole the puck and it's in the net this building is alive now it's kept in by chatfield
00:32:25hart played it away from blake behind the net it's been the best line throughout these playoffs
00:32:33and it has the first goal of the night for carolina stank coven with the 20th for the line of
00:32:40hall
00:32:40stank coven and blake in 15 games played in this postseason
00:32:48there are players i think are small and there's some that are just short stank coven's just short
00:32:55he's not he's not a tall guy he's 5'8 look at how he battled for the puck he pushed
00:33:00the bigger
00:33:01anderson off and he earned the puck and then he gets a bounce because he earned it
00:33:07martin up lost the puck to howden here's marner
00:33:13sends howden after the left-wing corner walker upended howden and now it's martin hook for
00:33:20svechnikoff trying to turn on hannafin svechnikoff couldn't quite control the puck miller had his
00:33:28first try to senate network block stones playing without a stick in the defensive end he goes to
00:33:34the bench and gets one and stays on momentum on the side of carolina trying to tie the game now
00:33:39miller down low bouncing puck and it went right past walker the defenseman who went crashing into the high
00:33:46slot most of the fans standing more than 18 000 on hand as usual 168 straight sellouts here
00:33:58here's jarvis with some speed forced into the corner by theodore
00:34:04will be another candidate to win the khan smite trophy with his play throughout these playoffs
00:34:10long way to go before they vote for that sissons handed it over to the cation
00:34:16ehlers into the zone it's got despair after it theodore there again playing up the wall and it's tipped out
00:34:24off the stick of hurdle
00:34:33the crowd fully engaged
00:34:37and this is a team that can score goals in bunches in a hurry we've seen throughout the playoffs
00:34:47here's the race icing robinson did his best as he went chasing after it with noah hanafin
00:34:57so 10 goals now in this postseason for stan coven tied for second most
00:35:03in a single playoff year with eric stall who scored 10 in 2009 for the canes rod brindamore
00:35:10scored 12 in the playoffs in 2006 when they won the stanley cup
00:35:18he was the 35 year old captain of that team for peter laviolette
00:35:24anderson it bounces to frederick anderson it's wedged out by robinson played down by carrie
00:35:32they're on side jankowski scores mark jankowski has tied the game
00:35:46and they're taking a look at the entry on that vegas bench it was very close
00:36:09it's 2-2
00:36:10mark jankowski is on side this play is on side carrie keeps it alive jankowski's first of the
00:36:19playoff hello what a time mark jankowski off the bar and in it's 2-2
00:36:28an unlikely goal scorer and lenovo is up again
00:36:36two goals in two minutes and 26 seconds
00:36:44tied at two with seven minutes to go
00:36:48and all of a sudden it's definitely again inside the lenovo center
00:36:53mark jankowski fourth line center they're so pleased with him they signed him to a contract
00:37:00extension during these playoffs between the philadelphia series in round two and the conference
00:37:07final against montreal stan coven scored to get them on the board unassisted at 10 20 and then jankowski is
00:37:16the first of the playoffs from carrie and robinson the fourth line at 12 46
00:37:24they're still waiting for aho and svechnikoff and jarvis to join the battle
00:37:33hanafin the head to hurdle there's one thing we've seen from these golden knights and we've seen it
00:37:39in the conference final and in game one here two nights ago they will not panic they were down
00:37:45quickly two to nothing in game one and came roaring back to win another one of these high flips this
00:37:52is
00:37:52such a difficult play for the defense as it's way up in the air lausanne is going to play carrie
00:37:59but the
00:37:59effort by carrie he keeps it alive punches it over and as jankowski scores this is outside the rink it's
00:38:09endless the people that are outside joining the 20 000 in here and it's 2-2 watch party on the
00:38:18south plaza here
00:38:20watch parties all over the triangle the defense indication fell down smith shot stopped by frederick
00:38:27anderson here's the counter it's robinson and jankowski again bouncing puck handled by down
00:38:42robinson couldn't pick it up carrie the carrier but they're offside
00:38:51this fourth line for carolina scored three goals in the last round an effective line they forecheck and
00:38:58they skate needing a goal they're gonna tie the game up but first it's logan stankovan
00:39:05that makes it 2-1 jankowski's perfect shot it's 2-2 under six minutes here in raleigh
00:39:16scott van pelt we will have sports center on espn when this one's done tj oshi in studio to break
00:39:21things down and things have changed drastically in the last five minutes nixon spurs speak ahead of
00:39:26game two of the nba finals and big news about aaron judge going to be out for a while jeff
00:39:31paston joins us
00:39:31john ray emily back to you in raleigh tie game great one going in game two
00:39:39sure is scott thank you very much
00:39:425 40 to go
00:39:46mark jankowski the unlikely
00:39:49game-tying goal
00:39:51he was the only
00:39:53carolina hurricane who didn't even have a shot on goal
00:39:56in game one it's his second career playoff goal in his 38th postseason game
00:40:055 20 to go scored one earlier in the playoffs it got waved off for an offside against ottawa
00:40:11this one does not and what a time for it sean in the first couple of periods i talked a
00:40:18lot about the
00:40:18one-on-bump battle hundreds of them in the game and vegas was winning all of them in the third
00:40:23period
00:40:24two examples of them both stankoven beats anderson and that turns into stankoven's goal
00:40:31carrier beats losall that turns into jankowski's goal and we're tied at two in the game two looks a
00:40:39heck of a lot different than it did 10 minutes ago
00:40:45fourth line back out there why not as rod brindamore says they have to play four lines in
00:40:526d because the way they play barbershop took it away stopped freddie anderson sprawls and stopped the
00:40:59wrap around the puck looks like it wound up in the net but the whistle is blown and john abeir
00:41:06emphatically saying no goal
00:41:12a bear couldn't be in better position than where he is he's standing on the back of the net
00:41:22what we'll look at is this play from barbershop does the puck enter the net here
00:41:30it does not as barbershop's wraparound anderson makes a dive to keep it alive barbershop fans on
00:41:40the second one and anderson's able to cradle it
00:41:47after slavin turned it over anderson is scrambling for good luck and the pucks in the nets it is it
00:41:54goes
00:41:54right through anderson i believe what we'll hear is that whistle was blown
00:42:03right here it's kicked in look at the skate of the carolinas defender it's gone into the sleeve of
00:42:10freddie anderson and the puck the puck clearly goes in it's the fact of the matter is when it went
00:42:17underneath
00:42:23anderson
00:42:24well you hear the whistle
00:42:27that i wonder did that whistle sound before the puck crossed the line right there's garrett rank
00:42:34probably explaining that to half of the vegas team they're all wrapped around john tortorella
00:42:41but as soon as he blows his sight of it he's going to blow the whistle
00:42:44so let's bring in dave jackson the officials are going to make another announcement this
00:42:50time it's garrett rank vegas is using their coaches challenge to determine if there was no
00:43:00five minutes to go this is an enormous
00:43:04decision that will be handed down the replay folks are all here on site in raleigh
00:43:10dave jackson let's get your first thoughts about this well sean initially you don't have to whistle
00:43:17before the puck crosses the goal if they're the thing called intent to whistle if the referee feels
00:43:22the puck is covered it doesn't really matter if the whistle goes before the puck crosses the goal line
00:43:27in his mind the play is dead they also said there was goaltender interference here they felt that the
00:43:32vegas forward interfered with the carolina goaltender so now vegas has looked at the replay
00:43:40they disagree with that call they don't think there was interference so they challenged this is a risky
00:43:45challenge because if they're wrong then they're going to be down uh two minutes for delay of game
00:43:50so i'm thinking jacks as i'm watching that the goalie interference would be on the stick
00:43:56i think it's dorofiev that is fishing around as as barbashev wraps the first one there's someone that
00:44:03comes in and their stick is involved with anderson that's really the only vegas player in in the
00:44:10picture that's what i'm thinking as well right i think the referee deemed the referee was the goaltender
00:44:16was on top of the puck and the stick came in underneath the goaltender's chest and knocked it loose that's
00:44:21all i can guess from up here but that's your as you said that's the only stick that seems to
00:44:26be near
00:44:26it now ray and jacks we see the two on-ice referees jane berenguer rank they're looking at an ipad
00:44:34the
00:44:34situation room obviously has a lot of views how involved in the decision making are the two on-ice
00:44:40officials now in a case like this they'll be very involved here comes the announcement after you
00:44:46the call in the ice stands we got no goals as i was saying sean the referees will be very
00:44:59involved
00:44:59in that call because we can't find the pucks the situation room ultimately makes the final decision
00:45:04but they'll be consulting with referee jean hebert asking him what he saw to help them make their decision
00:45:13it's barbershev's stick right here so they ruled no goalie interference remember now this is a carolina
00:45:21power play the unsuccessful challenge so it's delay again now jacks you mentioned they thought there
00:45:28was goalie interference would john tortorella be aware that the on-ice officials might have believed
00:45:35there was goaltender interference so regardless of when the whistle blew when he waved it off
00:45:40it wouldn't have counted anyway i believe the initial announcement which i went to the penalty box
00:45:45i believe he said there was no goal goal interference that's why they challenged saying there was no
00:45:51goal to enter interference on the play well it was a big risk taken by john tortorella and is this
00:46:00the time
00:46:00the carolina power play finally comes to life first power play where they get their top unit out
00:46:06it comes right to svechnikoff blocked by a sprawling doud
00:46:12gasta spare jarvis back for gasta spare with sissons defending up high
00:46:23cross ice it comes gasta spare gave it back to svechnikoff
00:46:28gasta spare scores
00:46:33shane gasta spare set it toward the net a power play goal tipped in by the captain jordan stall
00:46:55an incredible sequence of events and carolina leads for the first time tonight
00:47:02key moment we don't see here jordan stall won the draw they didn't have to go back to their own
00:47:08their own zone
00:47:11and regroup gasta spare shot it's tipped
00:47:17on the way through he's shooting this for ajo stick it goes right past ajo stalls on the gore step
00:47:25his tip
00:47:25beats heart what an extraordinary late third period this has become
00:47:33fourth of the playoff second in the series stall had won last night
00:47:38at age 37 he had gone 17 years between stanley cup final goals
00:47:45had scored for pittsburgh when they won the cup in 2009
00:47:51it was two nothing vegas now it's three to two with four minutes to go
00:48:03stall content to kill time rolls it to an open corner chatfield pinches in
00:48:11power play gold and john tortorella will be asked about his decision to challenge
00:48:19eichel on the rush trying to force it toward the net to take him back by hall
00:48:25barbachev got knocked down there'll be a penalty he's face down near the blue line
00:48:30he got knocked down garrett ranks the call
00:48:37barbachev looking for blood which would make it a four minute penalty
00:48:47carolina penalty number 53 two minutes interference
00:48:58blake's gonna stop up and get his hip into into barbachev the interference call is made as barbachev's
00:49:05pivoting back into the play blake will take him out here the crowd's roaring it's blatant interference
00:49:12i mean he sticks his hip up in the air and upends the player of course it's the home crowd
00:49:20right
00:49:20they hate every call everybody does but at a crucial time jackson blake takes a interference penalty
00:49:27and now one of carolina's benchmarks one of their strengths is their penalty kill
00:49:33and they're gonna have to come up big here three two lead late
00:49:38against vegas's power play that has not generated much in this series either
00:49:45well carolina was three for its previous 37 before the stall power play goal
00:49:51and now it's vegas trying to get back on track a man up eichel to face off win theodore lets
00:49:58it fly
00:49:59and missed the net marter kept them alive for theodore 320 to go
00:50:04game two game two a classic just like game one theodore took his eye off the feed from eichel
00:50:10and they need to regroup theodore shoots it in stall the power play goal from
00:50:18dostaspirance fetch the cough the pass back nowhere near theodore three minutes to go
00:50:26they've given up only four power play goals in this postseason carolina they've killed 55 of 59
00:50:35vegas doesn't even have a shot on goal on their three power play opportunities tonight prior to this one
00:50:42here's aho slavin gesturing at him just to send it in deep and kill the time
00:50:49the clock is the ally of the carolina hurricanes now
00:50:56eichel
00:50:58on the entry off for marner chatfield closed in
00:51:04off the kick plate eichel to stone and now dorfia 45 on the power play moved quickly by martin to
00:51:11eichel
00:51:11210 to go in regulation carolina trying to even this series at one win apiece
00:51:18they were on the ropes just moments ago eichel in behind stone moved it to martyr
00:51:24and it's picked off by robinson one of the heroes of this third period for the canes
00:51:32still not a shot on goal on this power play
00:51:36blake has 18 seconds to serve well came an eye on heart will he come out of the net howden
00:51:42into the
00:51:42zone he got knocked down kept in by hannafin anderson lets it fly and a glove save by frederick anderson
00:52:02anderson's got room to walk into this it might be going wide but freddie anderson with a sharp stop
00:52:10as vegas will call their timeout with 95 seconds left
00:52:19what a turn of events here
00:52:28turning point here tonight 2-2 a challenged play as barba chef
00:52:36tries to score what would be a 3-2 goal it's waved off the challenge unsuccessful the carolina power play
00:52:44takes 25 seconds
00:52:48and it is now a 3-2 carolina lead
00:52:53and ray i gotta go back to the challenge i mean john tortorello has done a magnificent job i don't
00:52:58think there was a risk worth taking and i don't say that with the benefit of hindsight i mean there
00:53:02were so many variables and ordinarily if there's questions the call on the ice is going to stand
00:53:08there was one of the whistle sound one of the puck go across they've already kind of indicated it wasn't
00:53:13it was goaltender interference yeah i'm with you i i wouldn't have challenged it myself i thought it was
00:53:19a risky challenge at best and for the most part in these playoffs unless there's some really irrefutable
00:53:27evidence that call on the ice will stand so now we go here remember jordan stall's one of the best
00:53:34on
00:53:34the draw and they he has to go down first stick down flat he wins it the net is empty
00:53:43the power play is
00:53:45over so now it's six on five blake's out of the box martyr sends it toward the net they score
00:53:52mark stone
00:53:54knocks it in unbelievable it's a three three game with 121 to go
00:54:09eight seconds after the power play ends it's mark stone the pucks on the boards and marner will hold
00:54:16and hold before he can find the lane to shoot the puck nobody blocks it and then when nobody blocks
00:54:23it
00:54:23nobody denies stone the space he's gonna spin to the front oh that hits anderson and then hits stone in
00:54:29the leg when it hits stone it drops down he's right on the crease swats it away it's gonna
00:54:37anderson tries to blocker it aside and hit stone drops to his pants and in the net and in vegas
00:54:45they
00:54:45celebrate an unlikely tying goal the goal he pulled and we're now three three
00:54:53six to the playoffs you talk about players who have a knack for rising to the occasion of the biggest
00:55:02moments mark stone is one of them the captain here's theodore with a minute to go in regulation
00:55:12stone a six on five goal from martyr and hurdle second assist for martyr at 18 39
00:55:2254 seconds to go now with the puck out of the rink we'll get another look at the goal here
00:55:26stone is
00:55:27going to take this puck it hits anderson and hits stone he's going to swat it and hit slavin oh
00:55:32it's
00:55:32actually it's slavin stick that knocks the puck into the net so i don't know if stone's going to end
00:55:38up
00:55:38getting credit for it i can guarantee you nobody really cares on the vegas bench as we're tied at three
00:55:46stone on the doorstep anderson with the initial stop
00:55:50and as slavin tries to help out he ends up it appears as an own goal but this is three
00:55:56three
00:55:58and the prospect of overtime
00:56:05hannafin with stall before checker still plenty of time jarvis got shoved hard by hannafin eichel
00:56:13turned it over ehler steps off the wall back of the line chatfield through a crowd and hart had to
00:56:20make
00:56:20a right pad save now here's martyr one-on-one on chatfield well defended here's stone again backhand
00:56:28kicked out by anderson looked like that was going to miss the short side theodore wobbled and the puck
00:56:34winds up in the neutral zone 15 seconds martyr looked like he wanted to attack but he got forced back
00:56:41heichel with 10 seconds miller to hall five seconds taylor hall time for a shot it came off his stick
00:56:51as
00:56:51he tried to fire and we're heading to overtime
00:56:58wow
00:57:05you have to wonder about the emotions on both sides
00:57:09it seems fitting they're heading to an overtime session here's steve
00:57:16all right sean normally i would say take the rest of the night off but you can't nobody's going anywhere
00:57:24overtime brought to us by icy hot that's appropriate both of these teams have been hot
00:57:31in overtime in these playoffs they're both undefeated in overtimes in these playoffs here's how we got
00:57:39here ray 2-0 vegas in the league to logan stankovin's individual effort made it 2-1 just a short
00:57:46time
00:57:46later carrier keeps the puck alive for mark jankowski's first goal of the playoffs it's 2-2 vegas thinks
00:57:54they scored a goaltender interference challenge went awry the power play ensuing jordan stall tips in
00:58:01dostas bears point shot it looks like we're headed at 1-1 until mark stone the captain chips this up
00:58:10over
00:58:10freddie anderson's glove with the goaltender out 3-3 a wild third period and we head to overtime
00:58:20vegas 3-0 in overtime in these playoffs and carolina is 5-0 all of them by final scores of
00:58:303-2
00:58:31and they've won seven in a row in overtime in the playoffs back to the first round last year ray
00:58:37we've talked as they went off the ice about the mindset of these two teams i mean if you're vegas
00:58:41you blew a 2-0 lead but then you're thinking you might lose in regulation before you get the stone
00:58:46goal so both teams had reason to be happy and and disappointed well i i think so and now you
00:58:52get to a
00:58:52point in this period where let's not forget the series as well as 1-0 the importance of this overtime
00:59:00for carolina the comeback's great and all that but they need this vegas already has a win in their
00:59:08pocket let's remember as well long change in this period it's like the second period for each team
00:59:17along the near wall it's taylor hall through a crowd that hit his teammate jackson blake
00:59:27that line is intact stancovin started the scoring more than midway through
00:59:34the third period long try to send marner it along the pass too hot to handle
00:59:42that stancovin goal into the 59 minute and one second playoff scoreless drought back to game one
00:59:49the longest stretch without a goal of any stretch in these playoffs and it ignited a remarkable sequence
00:59:57of events
01:00:01jay theodore to mark stone dorofiev throws it on net there's no such thing as a bad shot in
01:00:09overtime as my friend ray ferraro has said on more than one occasion yeah you bet and just think
01:00:14easy save right well now you got an offensive zone face off you put as barbershev comes back had some
01:00:21repairs he's a little late to the ice and oh look at that i got an offensive zone face off
01:00:25as vegas will
01:00:26have their top line eichel dorofiev and barbershev out so it's a long shot but now you've got a chance
01:00:33here you got a chance off the draw and every face off critical stall the best face off man on
01:00:41either
01:00:41team and he won it cleanly for michael
01:00:47bouncing puck noah hannifin has it and again they're playing shorthanded on defense that they
01:00:53have virtually all night if you're just joining us braden mcnab their defensive stalwart injured in the
01:00:59first period they took a puck in the face on a hard shot from nikolai evers he left and did
01:01:03not return
01:01:05dylan coghlin has not taken a regular turn on defense as well for john tortorello so for a lot of
01:01:11the night vegas has played with four defensemen well coghlin's out there now and i think it at some
01:01:20point they just they had to stretch coghlin into this because they were you get worn down with the way
01:01:26that third period when coghlin's up now squeaking up close to 15 minutes hannifin's going to be out
01:01:31here all the time in this third or in this overtime as you start running into the the point where
01:01:38you
01:01:39need to get up the ice you got to break out hannifin's got to be there thrown quickly toward the
01:01:43net you can
01:01:44see everybody already in this opening minute and a half with the mindset fire away when you have the chance
01:01:50keyandre miller did good work to keep it alive by jordan martin ajo sent it back miller again blocker
01:02:00down by carter hart up the glass from hannifin kept in by miller sebastian ajo out there with
01:02:08svechnikoff and martin koglin the hip check he managed to knock down svechnikoff the big strong man
01:02:17they take it back svechnikoff six three two hundred pounder ajo couldn't handle it barbershop couldn't
01:02:24get it past the kishan now eichel and dorofiev going after it dorofiev and svechnikoff the battle
01:02:33ajo turned back by coghlin
01:02:38pinching in walker the puck slid past robinson he has it back
01:02:46he has carried the post and the puck's up into the netting and that's a good break for vegas
01:02:53because those guys have been on the ice and they're gassed at about a minute and 40 seconds
01:02:57that's what happens in the long change period the second period and the first overtime period
01:03:03once you get stranded you can't change carolina made a change they got fresh people on the ice
01:03:09and you look at coghlin and hannifin they're just sucking wind on the bench trying to get their breath back
01:03:19off the draw carrie went down crowd wants the penalty they're not going to get carrie stick
01:03:25wound up in the corner he's trying to pick it up and does
01:03:30lose on freezes the puck systems got popped by carrie a the hit ahead to stone the pitch back for
01:03:38the ball is on back for stone he scored the game tying goal that set this in overtime
01:03:45his third goal in the last four games goss despair played it off jankowski
01:03:55theodore had trouble with the puck had to move it with eelers approaching
01:04:00hurdle got smushed by jarvis and there is going to be a penalty here
01:04:06against the vegas golden knights for a trip
01:04:16vegas penalty number 48 two minutes tripping
01:04:21tomash hurtle into the penalty box hurtle doesn't get the puck out of the zone you see it lying there
01:04:27and as he misplayed it stall jumps into the loose puck hurtle hangs his head because
01:04:32he ends up tripping stall in this carolina power play that scored in the third period remember it was a
01:04:39quick shot from goss this part of the the high tip attempt by ajo but it was stall that got
01:04:45his stick on it
01:04:47and we think back to the power play goal set up by the challenge by john tortorella you could understand
01:04:54part of his mindset the carolina power play has been terrible throughout the playoffs they were three for
01:05:00their previous 37 his team had killed off 15 of the last 16
01:05:06so he was willing to take the chance on the challenge ajo didn't get a lot on it one hands
01:05:11and
01:05:11tore the net they're batting at the puck svetnikov sent it over the crossbar
01:05:17so stall only plays the first 20 seconds of a power play if he wins the draw that's why he
01:05:23was on the ice to score now he
01:05:25comes off and eelers joins this first power play group
01:05:32here's svetnikov and ajo these gentlemen would quiet all the critics wondering where they've been
01:05:41if they score the game-winner in overtime gosh despair they score
01:05:49and ignites the crowd
01:05:52and ignites the crowd
01:05:54and ignites the crowd
01:06:18so
01:06:19and
01:06:25and
01:06:38and
01:06:39and
01:06:50and
01:07:03and
01:07:07they have possession now they've got some options the jarvis one timer from goss despair
01:07:13eludes carter hart
01:07:16sean you had just said
01:07:18these gentlemen would really answer a question if they could come through here
01:07:23jarvis the one timer it beats carter hart
01:07:27ajo on the assist and hart just can't get there
01:07:31a remarkable third period and overtime and carolina has evened this series as we head back to vegas
01:07:40jarvis on the power play
01:07:43their power play absent throughout this postseason but stall on the power play gave them the lead
01:07:51in the third period
01:07:53stone tied it thereafter for vegas and now jarvis on the power play wins it
01:07:58from goss despair and ajo
01:08:01second assist for goss despair
01:08:05jarvis just three goals in these playoffs
01:08:08and the last one was into an empty net in game five against montreal
01:08:15three stars being introduced stan colvin
01:08:18got their scoring started when they were down two to nothing
01:08:21more than midway through the third period then after jankowski tied it with his first of the playoffs
01:08:27stall on the power play after the failed challenge
01:08:31stone scored for vegas stalls the number two star
01:08:36and here comes seth jarvis the 24 year old from winnipeg
01:08:46fifth season in the nhl
01:08:4930 goals or more in each of the last three regular seasons but
01:08:54like ajo and svechnikov quiet until it mattered most
01:08:59and he's with emily kaplum
01:09:02power play at the end of overtime there take me through the sequence from your perspective
01:09:07our power play found our groove tonight it started with jordo in the third and then
01:09:11there i mean just making the right plays playing smart and being aggressive and it worked out
01:09:15that third period that sequence their overturned goal giordo scores they tie it what was it like
01:09:21to play in all that it was it was a lot uh we did a great job controlling our emotions

01:09:57third period he addresses the team what does he say it was all positive he was sticking with our
01:10:02game knowing it'll come and sanke did a great job getting it going and jank's with a great shot and
01:10:06we just carried it on from there best part of scoring that goal winning that game in front of these
01:10:11fans what describe what did it sound like that was the best feeling in the world congratulations
01:10:18thank you
01:10:25there is your game two hero it's the power play marker for seth jarvis they enter the zone with
01:10:31possession and the patience here to get set but how quickly this puck goes from goss despair in the
01:10:38middle and off jervis's stick carter hart can't catch up to it down two nothing they come all the
