00:00Lando Norris next across the line but still on a different sets or different
00:06run program to others might be pushing a bit now but tire warm-up I wonder if
00:12you're gonna need a couple of laps at times or not. Well at the moment it's
00:17just gonna get better because there's more confidence every lap that the
00:19drivers are doing on the tires and as we've already spoken about the circuit
00:23is still improving so for most of this session they will be able to do a fast
00:26so far slow and actually get a lap time out of it which is good.
00:30Isaac Hajar on track now still bouncing around. See the rear bouncing there hitting the ground
00:34that's not nice when you come up to Casino Square you're coming into that
00:38corner it's such a high speed and it's completely blind so yeah if you're blurred
00:42your vision's blurred it's a very uncomfortable turn in. When you were
00:47driving here in F2 how much of the track were you visibly able to focus on or how
00:53much was kind of muscle memory in the mind because it was so bumpy you couldn't
00:58really focus? I think Sector 2 is quite obviously a lot slower you have quite a
01:04lot more time to think Portier 1, Portier 2, Fairmont, Miribault but that's
01:09that's where I actually struggle the most at low speed where there's such low actual
01:15let's say car speed where your time just gathers much much higher rather than
01:21thinking you you send it a little bit more through swing pool section or up into
01:24turn one braking you can lose much more time in those low speed corners.
01:29It's patience that you need through there isn't it? It's patience also breaking into
01:34into Miribault which is before the Fairmont breaking super difficult
01:37obviously the crowning is is very tough there's no room very much for lock-up
01:41because once you commit to the turn-in you're really either in the wall you
01:44can't go back to the to the to the runoff and then the the actual banking
01:50what's happened to Lando here oh that was near oh and again this has not been an
01:58easy adventure for the first 35 minutes for the reigning world champion no that's a
02:03big snuff of oversteady lovely save there he just nailed that curve but I
02:14seemed to unsettle itself on the curb last year's winner of course from pole here
02:19Jack if it's not to be the Haas team this year because you've got to be a bit
02:22partisan who's your who's your money on you know just from prior talk obviously
02:28we're very early days but the Ferrari with that large turbo low speed corners
02:32spinning up very much better than everyone else and I have to say then
02:36somebody has gone into the wall right opposite our commentary box it's Isaac
02:40Hajar and I said earlier this is a maker or a breaker this corner and here in
02:47FP1 it is a breaker for Isaac Hajar first car into the wall on the exit of the
02:55swimming pool chicane I hope he's okay we we felt the thud from our commentary box
03:00we are right opposite here and that's gone in quite hard JB it has yeah we didn't see
03:05the full accident there but um never nice in FP1 that was a hard hit as well I
03:10don't know if he got it wrong on the entry and it looked like he went in quite an
03:15angle I think you went in it looked like he went in nose first yeah and then it and
03:18then yeah sort of spat around so I don't know if he hit the the the right hander
03:23with the rear or yeah it's a red flag and as you can see the drivers being
03:27encouraged as Oscar Piastri to go through that runoff area the crane in place and
03:33Isaac Hajar just taking his time to get out of the car the front right corner looks
03:40intact which means that I was it probably wasn't obviously a front right corner on
03:47the on the entry which is the big round of applause for Isaac as he gets out of the
03:51car oh slide I was just sliding was name what was the last time we saw a car
03:59sliding like that what about 10 seconds before you know it yeah but I understand
04:05like what snapped up like that I'm sorry it obviously went further than Lando's but
04:13it's exactly the same moment wasn't it yeah that's what I was gonna say that went a
04:18bit later though didn't it seem like it's just a little bit later and too late so
04:22Lando would a great save Isaac no chance to save that before this season you
04:26wouldn't see cars doing that at all never it would normally be a bit of understay
04:30through there if anything Jack thanks ever so much for joining us it has been an
04:36absolute pleasure and well you were here to witness the first big moment of the
04:41weekend Red Bull's Isaac Hajar causing the red flag snapping sliding and slamming
04:48into the barriers walking away into the barriers walking away to the pit lane he's 8th fastest and
04:53his session over
05:0118 and a half minutes to go we're still under red flag conditions there's Isaac Hajar walking
05:06back to the Red Bull garage he's walked up the steps from the swimming pool exits to make his
05:13way to the pit lane and the first big moment of this Monaco Grand Prix weekend with the car
05:21into the barriers where's he gonna go he's read his green cross coat that's good look left look right
05:30look left again and hop over the barriers and off to have a chat with the team that's the extent
05:36of
05:36the damage on his car front wing completely gone and damage at the rear and we're gonna get a
05:43resumption in one minute's time and back to see his his race engineer down at Red Bull Richard Wood
05:52and have a chat shrugging his shoulders you see that he had to shrug his shoulders with his
05:59engineer doesn't understand how the rear got away from him going into that corner but just a couple of
06:05laps before even one lap before we saw Lando Norris catch the big slide as well but I think Jack
06:10Dewan was right he just he lost the rear just too late it was unfortunately late in the corner where
06:16the
06:16rear stepped out and that was the end result he didn't use all the track on the entry did you
06:21not
06:22think he was quite far in turned in early as well yeah sort of 30 odd centimeters away from from
06:29the
06:29edge of the track Zach Brown CEO at McLaren is with us on the pit bull this weekend tell you
06:36what Zach we
06:36just seen a few replays of Isaac Hadja's incident that could easily have been your man about 20 seconds
06:42earlier that was a great save by Lando yeah that was a that was a close call but all all
06:48good here at
06:48the McLaren camp uh thousand Grand Prix's Zach what a weekend to celebrate today Monaco baby yeah it's
06:55uh amazing it was so good to get a lot of our race winners out yesterday cool to get Lewis
07:00and uh Fernando
07:02uh to to join as well I think uh a lot of great history with McLaren our iconic drivers uh
07:08some of
07:09which are on this broadcast so uh pretty uh pretty cool Zach is Anthony here what are the drivers reporting
07:15so far how does the car feel apart from that snap you just talked about with uh Lando's lucky escape
07:21uh it's okay uh looking at the uh the timings uh Antonelli's in another league the Ferraris look uh
07:28very quick so I think we've got some pace left in us Lando didn't get his lap together but uh
07:35you know if
07:35you had to make the call now you'd say it looks like it's going to be a Mercedes Ferrari shootout
07:40qualifying it means that'll be the race but let's see uh Portigo hey Zach it's Jensen uh first of all
07:46sorry I couldn't make your celebrations yesterday it looked epic um yeah but um yeah looking looking
07:53towards today how are those little winglets on the rear wing they look quite funny yeah are they
07:59really positive uh I think we got to uh check after the session I think early indications they're
08:05okay I don't think they make a substantial difference but as you know any difference is
08:09substantial in Formula One and we did miss you yesterday but you were invited as you know
08:15who drove Bruce McLaren's car that was Mika that was Mika nice yeah I think that was a very fine
08:22choice on that one great man Oscar's just coming out lots of new medium tires out on the track
08:27uh why why do you not think your car is up to the job of polling a win here this
08:32year and Lando was
08:33pretty much saying that yesterday as well I think uh we we know that Ferraris are really good uh you
08:40know off the corners I think they've got a nice package design there uh so I think we knew they'd
08:45be
08:45quick here and then of course Mercedes continues to set the pace as they've done all year so I think
08:50we'll get close I think we'll definitely be competitive but uh I think we also need to be realistic and
08:55look at the gaps and go that's uh well Lando's got some time to find as does Oscar do they
09:01have a
09:01second in them no I'm not so sure Zach pleasure to have you with us this weekend we'll speak more
09:06later this afternoon enjoy yourself it's Monaco after all you can't help but enjoy yourself Bernie
09:10who's having fun down in the pit lane other than you well obviously me Crofty as I said I'm really
09:16enjoying it and being on this side of the pit lane rather than the pit wall is bringing something
09:20different to my Monaco experience but Zach mentioned Kimi Antonelli there and we're just looking at the
09:25front of his car a setup change has been happening and what drew my attention to it was the sound
09:30of
09:31what sounded like a hammer which is never what you want when you're trying to adjust some suspension on
09:36these cars but with the heat components expand they've really struggled to remove the parts of that inner
09:42suspension that they wanted to to get changed looks like a change to the front push rod on that Mercedes
09:48they've managed to get it done it's going back together and hopefully he'll get back into the
09:52garage and if you just look to your rightly you can see his dad very carefully watching on he's
09:58watching you on his little mobile phone screen Crofty and he's keeping an eye on the garage and then he
10:04can step over the or step to the other side of the wall and watch Kimi on track as well
10:09so careful
10:10watchful eyes here from Kimi Antonelli's dad as well we better watch what we say there well thanks ever so
10:15much Bernie not that we say anything uh that uh that we shouldn't given the season is some uh is
10:20having so far thanks Bernie Kimi Antonelli fastest from Charles Leclerc uh let's see how that all changes
10:26around in the next 13 minutes didn't his didn't his dad say something like every time i turn up to
10:32the
10:32Grand Prix he gets a good start so you're going to be seeing a lot more of me or something
10:35like
10:37uh yeah not this season it's the best thing he hasn't been at the track so he's had a bad
10:43start
10:44i think he's i don't know i think he has been at the track where there's been a few bad
10:47so there's been way too many he hasn't had a good start yet so everything else has been great
10:52apart from his starts yeah his finishes have been absolutely magnificent but i don't i think he's lost
10:57places at the start of every grand prix but it isn't where you start it's where you finish you both
11:02know that
11:03one uh to be honest at first you must be guys this fix is release it doesn't work the release
11:17this release
11:20i'm not entirely sure i'm wrecking my brains now
11:26either way max verstappen troubled uh by that for the time being that was ollie bearman uh flying that
11:35three to back 10 miles an hour
11:42slippery on the exit of the swimming pool chicane where isaac had his crash and a bit of liquid
11:47uh went down hence the uh the cement dust watch the end of this ollie bearman lap and then see
11:55who we pick up verstappens on a push lap bearman goes 12 fastest overall for the uh has team last
12:02year of course uh ollie bearman's first uh monaco where he finished 12th and we're on board with the
12:08one remaining rebel in this session max verstappen
12:13once again absolutely perfect you feel it here a little bit of wheelspin there on the bums don't
12:18you with the rear i'm intrigued to see how he's going to take this corner here so using yeah a
12:22lot
12:22more of the track before that right left where his teammate crashed it just helps to open up the
12:28circuit there's that little bit more and you're already that look nice yeah really good through
12:31rust gas final corner a bit of undersea mid corner but keeps it neat and tidy on the exit
12:37and uh yeah we've got to watch out for the staff and i think this weekend he i know zach
12:42was saying
12:42it's all about the mercedes and the fraris i still think the mclarens will be up there as well but
12:47lock up the players sorry yeah you just can't discount max around this circuit he seemed to be a bit
12:54tight-lipped i think yesterday as to his chances which made me think that he fancies his chances a bit
13:00more than summer tipping that makes sense yeah yeah got a lot of confidence i mean he knows what he's
13:05done
13:05here before and how quick he's been uh yeah as we were saying that last sector looked great he went
13:11quickest overall two-time winner one-time pole sitter of course here max for standard let's look at that
13:18lock up again for charlotte claire that was early wasn't it super early that's where he's hitting
13:22the brakes initially it's locking up that front right it's so difficult coming back to the circuit where
13:29you only appear on it that one time a year and you remember especially for the experienced drivers you
13:35remember how good the old cars would have been with the the masses of downforce they had and they're
13:41just going through that recalibration process through this session i mean a one minute 14 is still
13:47very fast it's it's very quick but it's not as fast as an 11.9 and that's the thing that's
13:53the thing
13:53they're remembering from last year and and also these cars nobody said it right at the top but
13:59the i'm not surprised to see the cars locking up as much as they are actually i would have expected
14:06a bit more of that and the rear is moving a lot more with the cars as well obviously as
14:12isaac found
14:12out but you know the rear is a lot more loose on entries uh a little bit on axis as
14:17well and it's more
14:18it's more fun for us to watch i know we're not the ones driving it but i i'm seeing the
14:23drivers having
14:23to work a bit harder in these cars than they were last year and for me that as a spectator
14:27as a viewer
14:28that's fun valtteri bottas was on the soft tire we were watching him on board last time i saw someone
14:34putting that much energy into soaring away at anything was a canadian lumberjack trying to clear
14:39a forest it is it was a blur on the steering wheel quite frankly shout out to nico hulkenberg by
14:46the way
14:46six fastest the best place uh of six here in 2016 but that's a decent time in the audi for
14:53hulkenberg
14:54although i think with improvement from the the clarence of piastri and norris to come and hajar in
14:59the red bull obviously out of the picture for the rest of this session hamilton set a personal best
15:03in the first sector on a par down to the nearest tenth with george russell both hitting a 19.5
15:09lewis with
15:10the 34.8 for the middle sector here he comes in the uh ferrari uh round rascast and two more
15:16corners
15:17to go and that was still sliding around to the barriers but that was absolutely perfect if it hit
15:21the barriers a little tap to straighten it up and then get the power on into the final corner hamilton
15:26goes quickest by three tenths of a second into the low 1.14s on board now with lando norris he
15:32can
15:33only manage six fastest charles claire's gone quickest overall in the first sector and george russell
15:37crosses the line and now stays the fastest lewis was really on top of that car the whole way through
15:46and he had to navigate his way past three cars as well as the claire pops in the fastest first
15:51sector
15:51what can he do midway through the swimming pools where we're going to see the i know the second sector
15:56pops up just there just in front of his teammate now but that's where lewis had to get past all
16:00those
16:00slower cars and it was a distraction for him now this part on the exit of rascast lewis had to
16:06slide a bit
16:06more neat and tidy for the claire but i'm not sure i'm not sure it was as quick for the
16:12claire but you
16:12never know he was definitely smooth goes far yeah he was quicker yeah but listen to that roar as
16:18he went fastest as well fastest man in practice last year in fp1 is the fastest man at the moment
16:24and the only man in the 1.13 charlotte claire i'm with you jensen look way better for lewis but
16:28maybe a little bit slower why yeah i mean that was when you watch charles lap that looked like a
16:33quality lap in q3 didn't it really nice that was properly on the limit through to back millimeters
16:38away from the apex really impressive we've got the yellow flag very momentarily uh down uh towards the
16:46nouvelle chicane i think someone's just gone straight over there out of the tunnel on board with pierre
16:51gasly now and uh while he makes his way around uh rascast gabriel portoletto goes eighth fastest
16:58charlotte claire by the way is going to be investigated after this session liam lawson's
17:02been uh called into that one too for an impeding incident that we haven't necessarily seen gasly
17:08goes eighth fastest he's been outscored and out qualified by franco colopinto last two races
17:14uh don't count him out for this one though and that was oscar piastri uh coming uh by arvid linblad
17:20just at the moment he didn't want arvid linblad anywhere near yeah piastri had said personal best
17:25first sector as norris has just done but uh linblad just in the wrong place wrong place wrong time for
17:33piastri on that one limbad tried to get out of the way but it kind of panicked a bit made
17:37the problem
17:38even worse with poor old piastri now here's lando norris as ollie bearman makes way in the breaking
17:45zone down towards the nouvelle chicane last his way swinging left-handed past the boat through to back
17:54flat out through the entry into the swimming pool does feel a little bit more slow and controlled on
18:01the on the swimming pool exit i have to say i was just thinking that crofty actually the whole way
18:05through
18:05looks like he was giving a bit more margin this is the moment with linblad and piastri and where do
18:11you
18:11go you can't go a bit faster so you can get a sarcastic thumbs up that is so piastri oh
18:20wow
18:25no idea if i get damage i messed up bro sorry he might get away with that to be fair
18:31because it was it
18:32was like side impact not front impact if that makes it actually look like there's a rear he can't he
18:37had the slide didn't he that that notorious slide we've seen from a few cars which ended had child
18:42session early but uh it kind of rechecked the car in the process when he hit the barrier look at
18:51that
18:51for close super close to the wall five centimeters that's leaving a margin surely around here
18:58that's a super close is one centimeter exactly
19:02oh now welcome back so here's a driver and possibly a team as well that can surprise this weekend
19:08that's why i gave the little shout out earlier when he was currently six fastest at that time
19:14experience around monaco counts for an awful lot and he's got bags of it he's also giving a lot of
19:19margin i have to say apexes exits he's he's building up to this yeah i can see that too he's
19:26just
19:27it's the classic sign of an experienced driver he knows that you don't get the points today and uh you
19:34know this place more than any circuits that's another yellow flag out there
19:39uh he knows yeah he knows that you you just got to build up to it for salato his teammate
19:46in the top
19:4710 and goes ninth in his uh next in his latest lap linblad's been noted for impeding that was
19:55unsurprisingly that's a bit of mercedes isn't it looks like it yeah which other bit mercedes or it's
20:00a bit of aston martin but it's certainly in the middle of the track and is going to need to
20:06be
20:06uh recovered down before the uh oh he's hit the wall on breaking he's hit the wall
20:16and it is for fernando alonso it's a red flag too that might be the end of the session
20:22could that not have been done on a virtual safety car just to get it out of the way was
20:27there a bit
20:27more debris around i don't know i have a dangerous spot isn't it yeah marshall's on the track i guess
20:33he's lost the rear under braking and it's put the front right into the wall yeah yeah very quickly
20:40as well that completely caught him out he spoke about front lockups but that was that's kind of
20:48the similar to the moment i remember lance stroll having in bahrain winter test where it just spun the
20:52car out into turn 11. yeah the driver just becomes a passenger in that moment with such an aggressive
20:59and quick lockup and i saw that one of the yellow flags might have been for this moment here with
21:03leclerc down into mirabeau i think he might have gone straight on again yeah he did so
21:09yeah he ends the session the way that he started it but quickest but quickest that's the important bit
21:16in between time was the stuff looked really battered yes we didn't mention max verstappen put it up in p3
21:24as
21:24well yeah just half a second off the pace of charlotte claire pierre and ferrari i'm sure with
21:31happy eyes behind the sunglasses there with his ferrari team first and second in this practice session
21:39we might get a restart because the cars will want to come onto the grid to do practice starts
21:46but we're not going to get any more representative times at the end of this session as ever a fun
21:5460
21:54minutes here in monaco watching these cars go round and round and round for lance stroll um slowest time
22:03only 16 laps for him and isaac hajar only 14 laps the rest got plenty of mileage in and for
22:12that man the
22:12quickest time overall now last year he was fastest in fp1 fp2 fp3 and q1 and then lambo norwich took
22:20over after that when he got to the really important stuff but that's um that was a an interesting
22:26comparison between the two ferrari drivers the bits we saw one was hustling it around and it was sliding
22:32and he was using the slide and the other was a little more precise and and controlled and eventually
22:38two tenths faster yeah he might might have ended up with just a lower rear temperature which gave him
22:42more grip on those last two corners uh from from less sliding but uh we've seen this from ferrari
22:47before haven't we though in fp1 being mighty quick um and then not as much in fp2 so it'll be
22:53interesting to see if the others can close the gap the car certainly looks like it's it's got a wide
23:00window of operation because hamilton you've got two very different styles going on just then the way they
23:05attack the circuit and uh and they're right at the front of the pack right bernie uh you want to
23:10get
23:10to the front of the pit lane here for when this session's going to restart which i think it is
23:13now
23:14green lights on 30 seconds to go yeah exactly there because there's cars shooting out past me in the
23:20pit lane here a rush to get to the end because they do want to get going we see liam
23:24lawson just in
23:25front of us getting ready to go as well like you commented he had that wall touch it did come
23:30in and
23:31changed the front wing and then checked that it was set up again but a bit of a queue at
23:35the end
23:36of that pillion but i'm not going to rush down there personally oh i thought you'd be sprinting
23:40out after them to count them all out bernie uh three two and one and those left in the pits
23:48for stephen hajar obviously uh alonso obviously and strong and everyone else has got out to do a
23:57practice start on the grid so these won't be laps that count but they'll have to go they'll do the
24:02lap take the flag and then go and do another lap and then stock up the grid for their practice
24:08start
24:08it's bottas that's in front of heads to the pack coming through rascast right now as we watch the
24:14hairpin and uh gotta have a shout out to bottas's teammate actually perez p14 in that session i thought
24:21it was a pretty remarkable effort even on the soft tire yeah he actually was he was up there in
24:27p14
24:27when they were running the hard tires as well yes he's had a very decent session all the way through
24:33there is the checkered flag the first to take it was about to bottas you can see still bits of
24:38debris around you a proper sweep in between this and the uh the next on track session
24:46so for the the home fans a very happy first part of qualifying and for ferrari a very happy first
24:52part of qualifying the margin between hamilton and verstappen about three tenths of a second
24:57there's no surprise those top three drivers they were the ones that we kind of thought might be
25:01dominating the the speed headlines this weekend yeah i mean it's it's been interesting because there's
25:08been many drivers that have been p1 this session uh but that's how it's ended up i mean you can't
25:14count out any of the top five you would say that the mclaren seems a little bit off the pace
25:19wouldn't
25:19you and zach also feeling that way it does seem so at the moment but there's such an array of
25:25setup
25:25opportunities with these cars that's one thing with this current generation of f1 car now compared to the
25:32past that you can really manipulate the way they feel that they're actually excellent cars to work on
25:39for engineers and for drivers so that gives mclaren opportunity to to get back in the hunt but yeah
25:46let's not forget piastri down there in p8 he he was on a personal best with that first sector and
25:51it didn't materialize because of traffic i'm sure many others have got a similar kind of story as well
25:56it's not everyone's lap at least in the top 10 would have had a comfortably clear that even hamilton
26:03had to get past three slower cars and to end up p2 oh dear liam lawson leaving pit exit on
26:10a red light
26:12that is a no-no when it when it's red you can't go
26:19i'd hope that the stewards see a little bit of leniency there because they were all desperate to get
26:25out to do a practice start but i kind of fear a bit for liam lawson on that one in
26:31that you can't
26:33do it because you don't know why well you know the light's red because it's ticked down to zero
26:38but there might also be another issue as to why it's red that you shouldn't go on
26:44or it might be that it went red and he was always he was it was too near to the
26:48line to react as we
26:49sometimes see it could be that if the driver's sort of part visually passed the the green light
26:56before it's gone red yeah or as just as it's turned red and and the rest of the car so
27:02it goes past it
27:03all depends on how many tenths of a second apparently when they're looking at when he pulled up to the
27:09the exit it was on red and he still went oh well that's uh that's a slam dunk yeah let's
27:15let's have a
27:16look oh yeah green green green red oh it went red as i crossed it i'm not sure okay we're
27:25checking
27:25we're checking i i don't know where i could have stopped i don't think there's any way i don't think
27:29he could have said no he would have crossed the line he could have stopped not coming on the track
27:33but he would have crossed the line still exactly you see the moment where he reacts to it yeah and
27:38then
27:38he kind of well i'm past it now what do i do just stop on the circuit and get out
27:42yeah and to be honest
27:44what would have happened they'd have actually pushed him back which is probably not as safe as
27:49him just going out i've been in a situation like that before in my career actually at allemand and
27:55that was coming into the pit lane when the pit lane closed like yeah because i was too close to
28:00it
28:00couldn't react to it i thought i was going to get a penalty but actually when it was investigated it
28:05was
28:06just human human brain can't react to it as quickly as that so then then you were let off so
28:12hopefully for his sake it would be the same kind of deal
28:17so practice starts done and they're important here in the practice sessions because you can't
28:21do a practice start on the exit of the pit lane you have to get out onto the track although
28:26on your
28:27laps to the grid on sunday you can do a practice start then it looked like he was stopping there
28:32did
28:32you see that yeah which obviously you're not allowed to do he's going very slowly he's still
28:38going okay you're right you can't do a practice start on track but he's certainly not allowed
28:46so a big crowd here and blue skies and sunshine over the harbour where we're situated currently and
28:53where a lot of fans are situated too and the way you follow it unless you're in the tunnel there's
28:57blue
28:58skies everywhere but it's a red flag day uh for fp1 caused by isaac hadjar and it's maybe a red
29:06leather day as well for ferrari and michael de claire contract extension and fastest in fp1 for the
29:12scooter rear and the only man among the third teams so far this weekend lewis hamilton's team mate
29:18joining him in the top two just a couple of attempts behind and then max verstappen and kimmy antonelli
29:23half a second adrift with george russell fifth fastest lando norris six niko hulkenberg solid
29:28session from him oscar piastri uh got impeded by alvin limblad on his fast lap only eight fastest
29:33and then portoletto and gasly two aldis in the top uh nine gasly for alpine uh was 10th after him
29:40albon science hadjar who had that crash on the exit of the swimming pool perez on the soft tire good
29:45performance from him at the cadillac colopinto and bearman ocon and limblad lawson and alonso who crashed
29:51on the way to the chicane out of the tunnel bottas and stroll bringing up the rear charles clare as
29:57it was last year for fp1 here in monaco was fastest
30:03yeah those early indications of ferrari being the favorites around here look reasonably accurate
30:10don't they two tenths between the ferrari pair but uh half a second between charles clare and their
30:15nearest competitors outside of the red cars so back with practice two from 3 30 wrapping up the day
30:21with the f1 show from 5 15 on saturday back with the final hour practice from 11 15 ahead of
30:28qualifying
30:28build up from 2 15 and on air back in the uk for 12 30 lights out two o'clock
30:35on sunday and here's what's on the menu
30:37and here's what we're going to do
30:48eggs are finished eggs are finished right we're up oh the avocado so i'll just leave
30:52i've done the avocado don't worry about it yeah but we need to slice it i've done the avocado
30:56you've done it done it oh yeah all right all right who's standing with your two chairs
31:05yeah where are my other two chairs
31:10have a look at this it was absolutely extraordinary look at the dust
31:15and the track was a little bit different back then for me this was another sport honestly uh
31:21this these guys were were crazy but it's so nice to see these these images and and to see also
31:27and
31:27appreciate how much monaco have have changed since then
31:35right yeah ali ali you're gonna take me home get a nice good night sleep yeah back that way yeah
31:41it's
31:42hard to drive to people what it's like to drive around the streets of monaco you know in any race
31:45car
31:46but especially in the formula one car because it's one of the most insane tracks to drive so when you
31:50get to live here drive it and then win here it's one of the best feelings you can imagine
32:00yeah living the monaco lifestyle with the drivers uh this weekend and he is the hometown boy he's the
32:082024 winner and he's the fastest in fp1 discussion about that and we're here from james vows momentary
32:24welcome back what an eventful session that one in which the uh hometown boy charlotte claire prevailed
32:30with a 139 that was uh around about four seconds uh off what we saw for pole position lando norris
32:37the
32:37first man to go under 70 seconds around the streets of monaco uh last year and now i'm delighted to
32:44say
32:44joined by uh williams team principal uh james vows james monaco love it i love it i mean it's just
32:51a very
32:51simple start we we all love it but what's your thoughts on on that session and these new cars around
32:55here oh sorry for the awesome simon on on the that session in particular the new cars around here
33:00first of all monaco uh just on that one i really do love it here i've sort of had a
33:04lot of hate
33:04relationships i had some pretty poor years here too but i it's so unique and special if you we're
33:10really lucky this year we can see the cars coming through the swimming pool and to watch them basically
33:14brushing the barrier already in fp1 is impressive um for us okay not where we need to be with the
33:19car set
33:20up i'm pretty sure we're gonna hear that message up and down the pit lane just struggling a lot with
33:23front locking and traction which are going to fix both of those but um it's okay we've got quite
33:28a bit of performance to come so hopefully it'll all come out but charles is only two seconds slower
33:33than he was quickest in fp1 last year actually that that surprises me given all the downforce
33:38you've had to shed just how fast they are yeah i think what you're really seeing is that the
33:42development rate is pretty impressive of these teams these days and you're right we've lost
33:46something close to 100 points of downforce but we're working hard to get it back on the car
33:50what does that mean in real money 100 points i mean it's a good question be be longer than this
33:54it's that basically it's about four seconds of that time i think it's like in that ballpark so um
33:59the fact we're back a couple of seconds off is impressive and let's see what we can get for the
34:03remainder of the weekend because we weren't on a soft tire there i know you're comparing like for
34:06light but i think that soft tire will help quite a bit what about the characteristics of the car we
34:10know
34:10and we've talked about it quite often james one of the things you've got to do is you've got to
34:14get that weight
34:14down uh what about the the characteristics of the car whether they suit this track more than others
34:19what what would your assessment of that be so so you're right we're still a little bit chunky i
34:24think that's the right way of saying it um it actually impacts you here less than it does with
34:28most other tracks but the next characteristics you want here first of all predictable car predictable
34:33balance the drivers need to exploit and push more more from it what you're looking for therefore is is
34:38not what i've just described this unpredictable rear and front locking that's going with it
34:41it's about low cfg downforce i mean we put some really dirty downforce on the car here and it's
34:47about having the package together a really complete package so here we are in june um seven world
34:54championship points eighth in the constructors title our good friend ross braun would say low
34:59hanging fruit it's got to be how would you describe this season so far for william yeah it's we
35:04absolutely had a difficult winter for winter and the facts are we started i think something close to
35:11two and a half seconds off when we got to melbourne that's just catching up from some mistakes made
35:17over the last six months there is a lot of low hanging fruit i think since melbourne to montreal
35:24we've added a really a couple of second of performance you can start to see we we couldn't
35:29get out of q1 now we're able to fight back into q3 again and here this weekend i'm still expecting
35:33to
35:34fight for q3 and what that shows me is whilst we've made mistakes we have the ability and the function
35:40within the business now to add performance very rapidly to come back so the low hanging fruit is
35:44weight that's just physics it will make the car faster and that will come off this year whilst we
35:49add basically aerodynamic and suspension factors which will happen over the next few races jake you've
35:55got a few challenges now i'm being told because of f2 we've got to go in here your car is
36:00firing up
36:01and i'm about to play you an interview from carlos sites this is what he had to say coming into
36:06the
36:06weekend i don't know if you can hear this just as we just as we roll it in yeah i
36:12know i obviously
36:13need to take a decision this year about my my future but at the same time i've made it very
36:18clear to
36:19williams and to my management team that my priority is to make this project work and that i wanna
36:26when i did the commitment a couple of years one year ago now to come here it was with the
36:31commitment of
36:32uh of trying to make this work and uh yeah i wish we can do that obviously this year we've
36:38hit a bit
36:38of a big bump that uh we didn't expect and now all my attention and all my focus is to
36:43try to get this
36:44team out of the bump as as soon as possible so i know you can hear that i mean the
36:50basic point there
36:51from carlos um james will say that his priority is to commit to this project but he'll need to make
36:58a decision about his future and what reassurances have you given carlos that this is the place for
37:05him to remain for the foreseeable it's a good question first of all um his his honor the way he
37:12works his honesty his values are very similar to mine so we have really honest conversations all the way
37:18through you heard him there he is here to commit to this as a project to win a world championship
37:24what i've shown him is what's happened this winter why we're confident it will never happen again and
37:30that's from both being delayed with a car but also how carby and how heavy it ended up being in
37:35addition
37:35to that what we've been going through is what are we doing in changes in the team some of them
37:39are
37:40announced some of them aren't announced yet and there's a good amount of changes his words not mine but
37:46i agree with him is this could have been the best thing that happened to us this winter because we
37:50need to expose everything and we are making the level of change required to move forward what he's
37:55looking for is what i've just spoken to you about have we from japan to miami to montreal are we
38:01making
38:01our way up the grid and the answer is yes and are we doing at the rate least happy with
38:05how is alex
38:06album performing this year in your view at the factory in the garage on the racetrack so first of all
38:13there's some accountability on our shoulders for alex's performance there are times this year
38:18shanghai for example where there's a small issue in the car but it has a temple to i think generally
38:25speaking this year it's been a very difficult year for alex to get it all together and when it has
38:30come
38:30together we have a marmot or an accident that happens as a result of it it's good to see him
38:36this
38:37weekend like he was in montreal hitting the ground running with a pace here today he's within a few
38:41milliseconds of carlos so generally speaking both of us haven't got it all right to the beginning of
38:47the year but he's picking up to where he should be is it fair to say your problems at williams
38:51are not
38:52the drivers at the moment it isn't the drivers but there's no doubt about it that we have not brought
38:58the car that we have the capability of bringing to the start of the year my ask is a little
39:02bit of
39:03patience watch what we're bringing over these next races because hopefully it'll start to move us up the
39:07right way but i have no concerns about carlos and alex they're the drivers you can win a championship
39:12with james there was an article i need to draw your attention to in the guardian last thursday with
39:17regards to the ownership of the team and and whether it's opaque or not and there's some relatively
39:23incendiary headlines within that uh about the team how do you respond to those and and what can you tell
39:29us about that going forward has it had an effect on the race team itself so the first thing on
39:34that very
39:35clearly all first of all it's a legal case and a complex legal case and there's not a lot i
39:40can
39:40talk about publicly but those claims are false for a start and they will be fought in a course of
39:45law
39:45with where they should be at this point in time they're misleading with the team actually the team's
39:50comfortable they know who we are what presents and what we stand for as our values and none of that
39:55has changed fair enough let's just move it on to more positive side of things then in terms of this
39:59weekend are we targeting double points finish and and what about for the rest of the season now given
40:04what everything you've just said there i i think um first of all we should be edging in closer to
40:09alpina i think we are the only thing that's interesting to me is audi had a strong session
40:13so let's see what it all shakes out when we get to qualifying but it is getting both cars in
40:17the
40:17points yes that's a tall ask every weekend but there is also unreliability that goes with it and my
40:23my plan is fundamentally this our plan is this we have a good performance pipeline all the way up
40:28until past baku and the big steps actually come a little bit later on to that as well these aren't
40:32the big
40:32steps yet and it's coming through every race and bringing performance that moves us forward appreciate
40:37it thanks so much james appreciate you coming out being uh honest with us let's uh let's go to the
40:41sky pad and is they eventful as we've been talking about anthony it's always going to be eventful in
40:47in monaco isn't it so uh let's start off with the two has drivers because we heard both drivers being
40:53quite vocal on the radio and i've got a bit more here to show you than what we saw and
40:59uh than what
41:00first met met the eye so first of all you've got bearman in front of ocon here he's not on
41:05a fast
41:06lap but he kind of cheekily half sends it down the inside before the final corner of his teammate
41:12and then has to back out of it and go again and here once again the zoo cars sort of
41:16trumbling around
41:17they've got another car in front of them i can't quite see it maybe it's one of the uh racing
41:22balls
41:22just there going through the the ras cast so it's all quite slow paced here and it's kind of like
41:27a you're in a queue basically so uh you've got to be nice and british about these things and just
41:33wait for the person in front shortly to go before you go well no esteban's got other ideas and goes
41:38to the visor cam look at that he just sends it down the inside of his teammate to nick that
41:44position
41:44before opening his that so i think hopefully if you back at home watching this that explains a bit more
41:49because i was a bit confused by it at the time so both drivers complaining about each other that
41:54clears that one up but then we get into a few more incidents and near misses let's start off with
42:01lando norris uh around the swimming pool section and he was really the first driver that we saw
42:06just play this in slow motion actually this is the first drive we saw lose control and go over the
42:12curbs like that or just rewind it and play it in um in full speed and and just see where
42:17he places
42:18the car as well actually so you're nice and close to the barrier here and what that does it just
42:22gives
42:22you a much nicer arc into the corner so you can you can really carry usually more speed by using
42:29more
42:29of the track and uh yeah the the real estate is a premium uh on this circuit in terms of
42:34the width
42:35between the barriers so he's on the right part of the track but the rear just gets away from him
42:40carries a bit too much speed and oh so nearly goes into the barrier and this sort of like from
42:44the
42:44from the off-board shot so nice catch there uh maybe a bit of wind behind the car as well
42:49that
42:50part of the session who knows but something mclaren are definitely gonna have to work on on the balance
42:54and then we get to hajar who in the same part of the track has a very similar moment but
43:00loses control
43:02just at the last minute and goes nose in i'm just going to rewind that now because remember where we
43:07were
43:07uh with lando and talking about the width of of usage of the track look at this how far away
43:14from
43:14the barrier that he is so he's along this this dotted white line so he's already making therefore
43:20the apex of the corner much tighter than it should be and goes for an early turning but
43:25you've got this this such a big margin on the left hand side and i just think that probably
43:30compromised things further and uh and that was that was the crash i mean it doesn't look like much
43:36from the onboard but uh oh i've got his radio under me as well sorry but yeah he he doesn't
43:44understand
43:45why the car went around like that on him but it's it's very reminiscent of what happened to to lando
43:52as
43:52well so clearly that part of the track catching some drivers out and then finally we went on with lewis
43:57on his best lap here uh if that plays yeah so once again see that the track you see that
44:04part
44:04the car looks good there we're just going to slow it down on the exit of brass cast this is
44:08on his best
44:08lap gets understeer mid corner the car doesn't turn initially look at the handful of lock and then he
44:13gets that snap and has to sort of back out of it so definitely lost a bit of time compared
44:19to
44:19leclerc who is a bit more neat and tidy uh through that sequence but it's such a great tractor i
44:25love
44:25watching drivers attack this circuit and uh there's still an awful long way to go for them as
44:30they continue their quest to build up speed around this notoriously tough track back to you simon
44:37yes indeed we talk about it so often and it's claimed uh a first couple of victims car wise that
44:42is uh is a cadgers car damaged to the well a lot of damage to the front of that exit
44:47of the swimming
44:47pool how often have we seen that but i have to say if you are a first time traveler to
44:54a formula
44:54one race along with the old maggots beckett section um at silverstone this this swimming pool uh section
45:02you can see down here if you want to see cars these f4 cars at their finest it's through there
45:07it is or
45:08in and through casino square i must say is equally as thrilling um the exit the tunnel where the cars
45:14are all light trying to slow them down get the downshifts out of the way but everywhere you look is
45:20opportunity and peril all at the same time and we've seen that uh in the first session but as i
45:26said
45:26earlier you've really got to enjoy friday and saturday with the monaco grand prix and fully embrace what
45:32a challenge it is from the first lap of practice to the last lap of the grand prix actually and
45:38just
45:38the development the the how everything evolves and and what just happened to is that hadjar there is
45:43worst case scenario a passenger i mean as you were saying on that one
45:47well you know a single seat has only got one driver in it by definition so um unfortunately
45:53there's not you know there's only one person to blame unless it falls apart but um yes you know you
45:57if you take too much speed in there you're kind of you're immediate it's gone in too much speed
46:03so you're already past the point of return there's nothing you can do about it at that point um and
46:10that's
46:10it you're going straight in the hedge we talked so often about it but i'm building up your rhythm
46:15over the weekend here is that something that you actively did you know yeah a lot of experience
46:19around here yeah i love racing around here and i drove here a lot yes of course but you have
46:24to
46:24learn that the hard way usually and you think you think that's how you're going to go and do it
46:28but
46:29the wise ones managed to keep it out of the wall because they've just got that knowledge and they've
46:34taken the pain frankly and you know you know what it's like here if you if you end up sort
46:39of 15th
46:4018th on the grid you're kind of unless you get lucky with some rain or or a timely safety car
46:46you're your sunday's wrecked what's your thought process on overtakes here we saw a smart one around
46:52the outside of the hairpin didn't we by lance stroll last year but they're only four and and you know
46:56three of those on the on the opening lap so do we think there's gonna be more opportunities with
47:00things smaller i think if there are more opportunities they'll be really scary and that's down into
47:05san devon yes when somebody's got overtake mode which is the whole lab don't forget not like the
47:10old drs through certain zones the wings won't go down here there are no straight line mode zones so
47:15you'll not see the wings going up and down at all um but if you're following you can keep more
47:21top speed
47:21longer and you can uh charge it well the batteries are full anyway so a tiny bit maybe the other
47:28overtaking
47:29place might be coming out of the tunnel down into that chicane if somebody's got an over over speed on
47:34on the car ahead and both of those are sketchy as sketchy can be i mean just with the change
47:39of
47:39lights coming out of the tunnel as well and just how bumpy it is and cambered yeah and a little
47:44bit
47:44crowned in the middle of the road a street circuit is like any road it's crowned so it drains both
47:50ways
47:50a race track cambers one way or the other for draining this track is now a mixture of both actually
47:56as it's evolved over over the decades but you still do get some very strange movement in the car you
48:03heard the drivers complaining about it in the fp1 was that as good a session as ferrari could have
48:07hoped for yeah they looked good didn't it i mean charles had a couple of sort of uh adventures didn't
48:13he early on the lock up on the outlab and across the chicane and what have you they were still
48:18struggling with understeer but but the raw pace looked extremely good it did uh let's go to the sky
48:24pad on that very subject because i think that's going to have a look around at charles quickest lap
48:30yeah let's take a look at charles lap because we haven't seen a full lap in its entirety yet so
48:35let's ride on board with the fastest man around this track today two seconds slower it was as as
48:41as it ended up compared to the cars from last year in the same session so for those of you
48:46wondering
48:46how are they going to get on two seconds is where we ended up so uh let's see how it
48:51looks from the
48:52driver's point of view so into sandoval the first corner the first thing to look at is how much of
48:57this
48:57curb they can actually take you can see the rubber lines on on the on the inside of the curb
49:02there
49:03so everyone's at it and uh obviously opening the corner up as much as you can very tricky
49:08braking zone like we know in sandoval to just propel you up this hill through beau rivage just
49:15to sort of straight line it as best you can before you come into massonet a late apex here to
49:20get the
49:20car to the left hand side and this is a really tricky corner the casino corner look how close you
49:26know
49:26the proximity of the marshals standing here what a shot they must have what a viewpoint they have
49:31but for the driver you're looking at this part here right where that wheel is your kind of your vision
49:37from inside the car is really looking through the halo and you end up sort of like looking there
49:43that's your vision in the car so it's you're judging this gap between the tire and the barrier and the
49:49margins are so fine like you can see to do this at speeds of around 80 to 90 miles an
49:55hour is so
49:57tricky now for rewind that you can appreciate that even more as it comes at you i mean blink and
50:02you
50:02miss it that apex and it's so easy to end up in one of those barriers either the right or
50:06the left
50:07takes a double stab at mirabeau there before heading down the hill into the hairpin slight lock up and
50:14actually just seen rewind it again look what he does with his hands i'll play in slow motion just
50:18look at the hands on the wheel and go to the slowest speed we can because he takes one hand
50:24off of the
50:24wheel to give himself extra lock here so the right hand goes round and then there's the left hand
50:31actually comes back around and holds the bottom of the steering wheel to stop it from snapping on him
50:36and then kind of gets the hands back in the right position for the exit incredible stuff
50:42then through portier one uses the uh the pavement on the inside got a car in front of us here
50:47on the
50:48exit of uh of portier proper through the tunnel of uh 165 miles an hour uh at the apex there
50:56breaking a straight line to get us through to the nouvelle chicane and this is another corner where you
51:00got to be incredibly precise and that's exactly how you want your car to behave there just go back
51:06uh one frame for you that's exactly the kind of balance you're looking for in your car you don't
51:11want any oversteer you don't want to end up running too wide you want a nice amount of understeer in
51:16the
51:16car not too much so you don't want to lock the inside front because you want to try and keep
51:21the car
51:21as close as you can to this barrier to help open up the next one if you go too wide
51:27i'll just get rid of
51:27that if you go too wide there then you end up in this corner and then it pinches and makes
51:33that one too
51:33tight and that's going to give you a terrible exit where the next car is on track so the key
51:38is really
51:38to go in tight to get a better exit that's what the drivers are looking for here and that's exactly
51:43what the claire is able to do on this slab it's beautiful to watch so hard to do to back
51:49you want
51:50to carry the speed there before flat out through the swimming pool section get the car to the left-hand
51:54side we've seen already before in the previous clips and a little bit unstable on the rear on the
51:59exit of that one now very different to hamilton actually i played his clip before where he picked
52:04up the understeer in rascas and i'll just slow it down for you see how much more front end he's
52:09got
52:09right there and that's where he gains the time on his teammate and the rear is in check on the
52:15exit as
52:15well feeds it into antonino's final corner nice and close to the curb doesn't use too much of the left
52:21hand curb and that is a really precise i think it was jensen actually in common she has said he
52:26attacked
52:26that lap in fp1 as if it was a qualifying three lap and uh yeah really you can see he's
52:31just got
52:32he i know he had a few little skirmishes here and there and ended up running uh wide into mirabeau
52:37in the last lap but that lap in particular you can see he's just got the confidence around here and
52:43that pays dividends yes indeed thank you anthony um right okay obviously we don't know fuel loads many
52:51different factors could have affected it but four and a half tenths between kimmy antonelli and george
52:55russell in the teenagers favor um session by session they've got to be taking it like that but uh yes
53:04what do you make of that i think it's too early to read anything into that if i'm honest we
53:07don't know
53:08traffic or uh anything else that that happened uh during their during their respective labs but
53:14there's no doubt about it kimmy antonelli is really on top of these 2026 cars uh and sometimes i wonder
53:21if george is fully but we know how close they've been as well but i don't think we can read
53:26anything
53:27into that george george would be quicker aren't i have no doubt about that uh a quick one on liam
53:30lawson
53:30as well i felt a bit sorry from at the end there just to see uh the exit lights turned
53:36from green to red
53:37it was 16 frames apparently which equates to a 0.64 of a second have another look at this one
53:44yeah it was really difficult to see uh or do anything about so um but he knows he went through
53:50a red light because he was on the radio yeah i because we were on the move i didn't manage
53:55to see
53:55but if if what the team should do there is pull him straight back in the pits don't do a
53:59practice start
54:00and say we gained no sporting advantage and he felt it was safer to keep going um but if he
54:07went
54:07and did a practice star i think they might they might be in problem because he knew he went through
54:11a red light we'll let you know on that one uh because we'll be with you through most of the
54:15day
54:15f2 qualifying is next here on sky sports f1 we'll be back with the second practice session
54:20from 3 30 but yeah eventful as we keep saying uh here in monaco it always is and uh charlotte
54:27with a couple attempts on his teammate and half a second on the rest of the field the homeboy
54:32looking good in the early salvos
