00:30In terms of methane, nitrous oxide, CO2.
00:38And those molecules are so thick in the atmosphere,
00:41they're blocking the sun's heat from getting back off the planet.
00:44So for every 1 degree Celsius, the temperature goes up from global warming emissions.
00:50The atmosphere is sucking up 7% more precipitation from the oceans,
00:55the lakes, the rivers, the streams, even the leaves on the trees.
01:00So what's happening here is we're beginning to realize that this water planet
01:05is much more powerful than we thought.
01:08And our little species is much smaller and less significant in the big scheme of things.
01:13So the reason I wrote Planet Aqua and the reason I spent so much time on water
01:17is we need to now begin to rethink how to adapt to the waters
01:23rather than forcing the waters to adapt to us.
01:36There's no other second way to think about this.
01:39What's happened is this.
01:41For 98% of the time, our little species have been on this planet 300,000 years.
01:46We did what every other species did.
01:48We adapted moment to moment to where the waters were taking us.
01:51And what it's meant is instead of adapting to a planet hydrosphere,
01:55we had the hubris of thinking we could adapt that hydrosphere to us.
01:59And now it's rebelling.
02:01It's trying to find a new normal.
02:02So this is a big shift in our worldview and it has to come very, very quickly
02:08because we are in an extinction event.
02:11And I want to say this for every young person.
02:15Our scientists tell us we may lose half the species of life to extinction
02:20in the next 75 years.
02:23They've been here for millions of years.
02:25So this is a wake-up call.
