00:00The End is your first fictional film, but in this film we can find all the themes that we have
00:09made also in your documentaries, but you choose maybe the most conventional, surely the most fictional of the genres of
00:25cinema is the musical.
00:27That's absolutely right. The musical is a genre that's totally open about its own artifice, about its own fictional, fictitious
00:37form. People don't just burst out into song, it's something that's not realist.
00:41I'd therefore say it's not conventional either. But in that sense, it's the perfect genre for exploring the fictions that
00:50we tell ourselves, the lies that we tell ourselves to ease our regrets, our ability to lie to ourselves, the
00:57awful consequences of that self-deception.
01:00Because, of course, the musical's always been the quintessential genre of a completely blind optimism, really for exploring denial, delusion,
01:12and the nature of fiction itself.
01:13The End appears to be, in a certain sense, about the near future, perhaps, but really I think it's an
01:22allegory for the present.
