Ryan Hoffman and Chad Townsend give their take on why everyone - players and coaches - in the NRL, is replaceable.
Transcript
00:00One thing I have noticed in Rugby League is that everyone's replaceable.
00:03Yes.
00:03Everyone can be replaced.
00:05It doesn't matter who you are.
00:07Melbourne Storm replaced Cameron Smith, Billy Slater and Cooper Cronk
00:11with Harry Grant, Jerome Hughes, and they've had Ryan Pappenhausen
00:16and now Sue O'Fallon.
00:17Everyone's replaceable.
00:19Everyone will be replaced.
00:20And one of the great sayings that I heard and was by the leader
00:24of the Melbourne Storm, old boys Peter Robinson,
00:26is that the number on your jersey you always give back
00:29but your player number is something you always keep.
00:32So it's knowing that your jersey is going to be filled by someone else.
00:35So it's not as if when you leave, no one's going to fill that jersey.
00:39Someone's going to put it on and they're going to do a job
00:41and everything like that.
00:42But it's understanding that you do have a part
00:46but you can be replaced on the field.
00:50Yes, 100%.
00:51That's the thing, right?
00:52I think unless you're the greatest of all time in the conversation,
00:58like those are the guys that get remembered forever at the forefront.
01:03But you're right with regards to the jerseys,
01:07like you're always replaceable.
01:08And that's the thing that a lot of people need to understand
01:11that it is a business, right?
01:13Business decisions get made all the time in our game.
01:17Some players are at the forefront of making business decisions
01:19to secure their future.
01:21Clubs are in the business of making decisions for their salary cap,
01:24their roster, their management of what they can do moving forward.
01:28So I think everyone involved in the game,
01:31especially as you get older and you get more experience,
01:34you understand how the business works.
01:36And obviously coaches, I mean, we've spoken heavily on that.
01:39If you don't win football games, your career, your job's on the line.
01:44And more often than not, if you don't bring success over a period of time,
01:47you're out the door.
01:48You're gone.
01:49It doesn't matter who you are.
01:50If you're a club legend, a club great,
01:52six-time premiership winner for that club,
01:54if you don't win football games, you're out.
01:56If you don't win football games, you're out.
02:01If you don't win football games, you're out.
02:03If you don't win football games, you're out.
02:04If you don't win football games, you're out.
02:04If you don't win football games, you're out.
02:04If you don't win football games, you're out.
02:05If you don't win football games, you're out.
