00:00sing about hating yourself and there you go there's my album right there you can't sing
00:03about hating yourself too much man you gotta have some some love for yourself well you gotta you
00:07gotta hate the girl that left you too that's some of the songs you know rock metal frog and
00:14everything in between welcome to this episode of talk and rock with meltdown don't forget to follow
00:20the audio only talk and rock podcast on all podcast platforms and now it's time for today's
00:26conversation here's meltdown hey ryan how are you man i'm great how you doing i'm doing all right
00:32you're out there in los angeles uh just doing all sorts of press for the record and the tour coming
00:36up yeah in rehearsal um yeah we went to the rainbow last night so it was fun was that the
00:44first time
00:44you were there no no i i'm here all the time now whether i like it or not but there's
00:52karaoke at
00:53the rainbow too so that was fun oh did you do it i did what did you sing so i
01:00actually have a cover
01:01that's coming out too in like a couple weeks but i did time to pretend mgmt okay nice yeah i
01:09was
01:09curious to see what kind of cover you're going to do uh some of the stuff i've heard so far
01:13obviously
01:13you know has the chris cornell tinge so you've probably heard that a million times
01:18i mean yeah chris cornell is my biggest inspiration for sure i i try not to like
01:25quote unquote mimic or whatever but sometimes it just shows through because i like listening to him
01:30yeah well i mean take that as a huge compliment because he was one of the best singers to come
01:35out of that era for sure yeah i i think the best vocally i say like lane staley is the
01:41best
01:42grunge singer but then chris cornell is the best singer that makes sense yeah i can go for that
01:47i was just telling you before we got on that i started my career in buffalo and i can remember
01:51the first time i can remember the first time i heard sound guard and i played outshined on the radio
01:56and i'm like this is like a modern day black sabbath and then uh unfortunately or whichever way you want
02:03to look at it i did see the last sound garden show really the last one yeah because that was
02:08here in
02:09detroit damn so that's intense yeah it's pretty wild uh but ryan good to uh talk to you make your
02:16acquaintance you're coming to the elk club on june 14th the new record can't cry comes out on august 14th
02:21so i've heard a couple of the tracks sour uh heavy eyes of course uh what's the rest of the
02:26record like
02:28i would say it's right on par with those
02:33the rest of the record uh very guitar driven i really tried to focus on it you know heavy eyes
02:38it's the the soft to loud ratio soft verse let it breathe loud chorus do that a bunch of times
02:47sing about hating yourself and there you go there's my album right there you can't sing about hating
02:52yourself too much man you got to have some symbols and love for yourself well you gotta you gotta hate
02:57the girl that left you too that that's some of the songs you know well that's the history of rock
03:01and roll i suppose right yeah yeah so there's the old saying you've probably heard it that you know
03:07you you could spend your whole life putting out your first record but you know not that long
03:11putting out your second so have you had these songs uh uh locked uh locked up for quite a while
03:16well actually i was i haven't released a full record but i've released like multiple eps and a lot of
03:22singles too before this so yeah i've been cooking along a lot a lot but um me and i this
03:30is my first time
03:31working with a producer for for music so this was a definite different experience i don't know if you
03:39know sam hollander he brought me in to work with him and it's been crazy like i started working with
03:45him and then i got management finally i got signed it's been cool over the past couple years so where
03:53did you record this record at so mount kisco new york in this renovated barn uh raw studios just hung
04:05out in there and went to town yeah and how long did it take you to record this album oh
04:12geez oh wow
04:13because we recorded some songs we had like half of it done and then we uh recorded that we stayed
04:22in the
04:22studio for like two weeks and recorded the rest of the album and then uh i actually did all the
04:28guitar from home so it's hard to really gauge how long it took but i like doing uh guitars just
04:35by myself because i i it takes me so many takes to get the right take i don't i don't
04:40need someone
04:41watching me do guitar honestly in the studio now why does it take you so many takes are you like
04:46a
04:47perfectionist or are you just looking for a certain sound or what's the deal with that i think i just
04:51suck at guitar i don't know i mess up a lot like if i'm if i'm writing and i'm a
04:58perfectionist like
04:59i want to sound like the guys that i like to listen to so yeah i guess i'm a perfectionist
05:04maybe but
05:05guitars definitely take me the most time on a record and uh you know why is it why did you
05:12why did
05:12you go with like you like your name and not like a band like you know whatever now what's the
05:16deal with
05:17that did you is this like your dream your your image your everything uh are you you're the front
05:22the voice the the face and everything in this project i mean i've been rocking with my name since i
05:28was born so i figured to stick with it but no i mean i've never had band members so i
05:35here on buffalo
05:37growing up i would play acoustically everywhere and then up until literally january i've never had
05:44band members so i never went with a band name or whatever because you know i i first off i
05:51love
05:51ray la montagne i love david gray you know all these people that have bands but they go by their
05:57name so
05:57it's not too outrageous now i've been out of buffalo for over 30 years but i do know that they
06:04do these
06:05uh these porch concerts and stuff did you ever do any of those um yeah one of my friends did
06:12like
06:12an oz fest last year on on the on their porch kind of like a tribute to ozzy that was
06:20like a porch fest
06:21type of thing i sang uh war pigs yeah that's cool and i saw in the one video you're actually
06:28sitting
06:29on a porch was that in buffalo or is that somewhere else uh for the heavy eyes yeah uh yeah
06:34we shot
06:35that video in la oh that's what i thought yeah i was gonna say it i was looking around didn't
06:38look
06:38very buffalo so you mentioned uh growing up there and stuff uh what kind of stuff influenced uh your
06:43sound growing up in buffalo is it just all the the grunge sound i mean you know here in detroit
06:48there's rock bands that seem to come out every other day in buffalo it's like the goo goo dolls came
06:52out like 30 years ago and it's i don't know how much comes out anymore yeah music in buffalo
06:59isn't really too like i don't know i don't think there's really a music scene in buffalo i could be
07:08wrong i could be wrong but like they're gonna attack me for this but um buffalo is a great place
07:15so very supportive like if there was like a music uh like boom in there people would be so supportive
07:21i mean look at the bills look at the the sabers and everything like people really love to support
07:26people in buffalo which is amazing really great town i'm proud to have grown up there and everything
07:33i love chicken wings duff's is great shout out to duff's
07:39i was only at duff's once and they were too hot i ordered the wrong ones i think but uh
07:43i i ate at the anchor bar one time with the band cinderella do you remember cinderella
07:47i don't yeah they were an 80s band a hair metal band but uh yeah um so so tell me
07:53more about this uh
07:54about growing up in buffalo where did you get your your music from was it the radio or just
07:58streaming uh where did you get your when did you discover because you know i've i've seen some
08:03things that you're talking about you know obviously a lot of the grunge stuff how do you discover all
08:07that you got older brothers or is your dad playing it or what i have three older brothers they're all
08:12like two are 11 years older than me and one's eight years older than me so i mean they were
08:17listening
08:17to food fighters chili peppers all the time nirvana all the time and uh my brother had a zune i
08:24don't
08:24know if you remember what that is but he had like all these songs downloaded on the computer from it
08:29like for free or we would go to the library and then you could uh sync it to the zune
08:35so then we
08:35would have the music forever so i would listen to that and uh i would just go through i like
08:41really
08:42love guns and roses for a while i used to do welcome to the jungle when i was like six
08:46years
08:46old on karaoke at the house which is funny but uh yeah i think my brothers kind of introduced me
08:55to
08:55that stuff like the grunge stuff i would say um but yeah my my dad also likes it but uh
09:02he kind of
09:03got me into michael jackson growing up i really love michael jackson but um yeah movie yeah i love the
09:10movie i thought i thought it was cool i'm excited for the second one to come out for sure i
09:15did wish
09:15the movie focused more on like the the dances and his fashion and stuff but i get it you know
09:21his
09:21relationship with his father is important too did you see the movie i did not see it uh i'm not
09:25a
09:26huge michael jackson fan which just mentioned about the relationship with his father what's the
09:29relationship with like with your parents and how supportive are they of you of what you're doing
09:33uh it's fucking awful man no i'm kidding they're great i wouldn't be here if it wasn't for them
09:40being supportive when nobody else supported me they supported me i mean they still support me so
09:47yeah i owe it to them where did you play around around buffalo were you doing gigs at uh at
09:53at like uh
09:53i don't know where do you play in buffalo i used to play at this uh hotel all the time
09:59the lounge at um just anywhere restaurants really i never played like like a like a music venue per se
10:08it was always like in the background uh with my acoustic guitar at restaurants or bars
10:15and so when you come out on this tour is this going to be like the first time you're playing
10:18music venues
10:21uh well this year i've played a couple i played at the whiskey go-go this year which was really
10:26cool
10:26i did uh silver lining in new york city which was really cool but this will be my first like
10:32line
10:32shows with the band and you guys have been rehearsing i take it yeah since uh we got together
10:38this year we've been rehearsing like non-stop all the time so we have fun with it what kind of
10:45stuff
10:45uh what kind of stuff you into now music wise yeah okay um i've been listening actually return to dust
10:55i've been listening to their new songs they're my buddies that makes sure yeah shout out return to
11:00dust uh london we actually was at the rainbow last night but uh yeah i love them uh but other
11:08than
11:09that i i just listen to the same shit i've always listened to like i love red hot chili peppers
11:14they're
11:14one of my favorite bands ever for guitar john friscianti is probably my favorite guitarist ever
11:20do you do you consider yourself kind of an older soul because you're listening to all this all
11:24this stuff that like older people listen to i don't know that's like saying if you read the
11:30newspaper you're like different i don't know it's like it's available to me so i don't know if i'm an
11:37old soul but i don't know i feel like if i said that about myself it would be kind of
11:42kind of weird
11:43but i do i do like older music for sure yeah taylor momson has kind of told me the same
11:49thing and she
11:49does consider herself an old soul she's like she listens to all this stuff that her dad listened
11:53to and that's how she kind of formed her musical chops all right yeah she's an old soul then
12:02screw it i don't know so will this be the first this will probably be your first time coming to
12:06detroit right yes actually yeah i'm excited and i just talked about all the music that's come out of
12:12here i mean do do you have anything uh from detroit you know music wise that uh that that you
12:17like i mean
12:18i prevail from out here you know new gen uh m&m jack white uh kid rock i mean the
12:24ellis cooper
12:24and seager the list is endless jack white yeah come on how could you not like jack white if you
12:30don't like jack white and you're like a rock musician then just put down a guitar like you
12:34you don't know what you're talking about everybody likes jack white if they're a musician
12:39yeah well i'll tell you what we'll give you this it's a good plug for the out club coming up
12:43on
12:43june 14th and the record can't cry comes out on august 14th and i'm assuming it's going to be
12:48available and uh and all sorts of physical copies as well yeah we're working on vinyls whatever it may
12:56be are you a vinyl guy i'm a vinyl guy yeah see you're an old soul i'm a vinyl guy

13:13at the whiskey make sure you do a shot for lemmy okay all right dude thanks man i appreciate your
13:21time and uh i don't know go bills i used to go to all the bills games back when i
13:25was there in

13:31so i watched all the saber games just recently so hell yeah yeah sabers randomly are good it's awesome
