00:00Barisan Nacional may be widely expected to win in the upcoming Johor State election,
00:06but analysts say a strong showing there should not be misconstrued as a nationwide resurgence for the coalition.
00:13O E Sun, a senior fellow at the Singapore Institute of International Affairs,
00:18said Johor, the birthplace of UMNO, remains a BN stronghold to the present day,
00:24making it an unreliable gauge of national sentiment.
00:27He told FMT that although BN won 40 out of 56 seats in the Johor polls in March 2022,
00:34it did not achieve a similar ratio of seats nationally in the general election that same year.
00:40Sivamurugan Pandian of University Science Malaysia said a BN win in the state polls
00:46may reflect voters' approval of Menteri Besar on Hafiz Ghazi's performance
00:51rather than indicate a revival of support for BN at the national level.
00:55He also said Johor voters prioritized development, investment, jobs, and governance,
01:02areas in which on Hafiz's administration had largely excelled.
01:08Awang Azman Pawi of University Malaya said BN still has his work cut out in convincing voters beyond Johor
01:14that it has changed since his historic 2018 defeat when the coalition lost power for the first time,
01:21even in its traditional stronghold of Johor.
01:25He said voters know that BN has extensive experience in governing the country,
01:30both at federal and state level.
01:32However, Awang Azman said this did not necessarily mean the coalition had resolved
01:38the challenges it faces in other states.
