00:17at approximately 9.15 p.m. in Kelly Village, Carony.
00:20The agency, which falls under the purview of the Ministry of Labor, Small and Microenterprise Development, is responsible for the
00:27administration and enforcement of occupational safety and health legislation in Trinidad and Tobago.
00:34The Labor Minister indicated that he has been advised that the agency is undertaking the necessary inquiries in accordance with
00:41its statutory responsibilities.
00:43Minister Batiste joined with Prime Minister Kamla Passat-Bissessa, who had earlier offered condolences to the family, friends and colleagues,
00:51and all those affected by the tragic workplace incident, which resulted in Mr. Joseph's death.
00:58Mr. Joseph was crushed beneath a garbage truck while carrying out his duties as a sanitation worker in Kelly Village,
01:04Carony.
01:05Mr. Joseph's father is demanding that authorities carry out a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident that led
01:14to the death of his son, who was an expectant father.
01:18Minister Batiste said that he wishes to assure the family of the deceased and the wider public that OSHA will
01:25continue to exercise its powers and perform its functions under the Occupational Safety and Health Act in relation to this
01:32matter.
01:33The Labor Minister further said that given the seriousness of the matter, it is important that the ongoing investigation by
01:40OSHA be afforded the opportunity to proceed in accordance with its statutory responsibilities.
01:46Minister Batiste also said this tragic incident serves as a reminder to all employers, contractors and persons responsible for managing
01:55workplaces that the safety, health and welfare of workers must always be treated as a paramount responsibility.
