“You suddenly have twice the amount of airflow going into the body.”

At the Fortune COO Summit, Nike EVP and COO Venkatesh Alagirisamy explained how the U.S. World Cup kit was engineered from recycled garments, custom yarn, and computational design to give athletes an advantage in the heat.

“That's the level of obsession that we put in place as we think about these games,” Alagirisamy said.

00:00This is the first time in our sport arena we have a jersey that is made from a hundred percent
00:08textile to textile recycling. So let me put this in perspective. It is actually used garments that
00:14are made into flakes and then remanufactured into jerseys. The way it's designed, it's a very custom
00:19knit and a custom yarn that it actually sits a bit of a distance away from your body. That
00:25facilitates airflow into the body as well. And combine that with computational design,
00:30you suddenly have twice the amount of airflow going into the body, especially as you think
00:36about the hot climate that we are going to be playing in. And that's what I was talking about
00:42as the outsized advantage. We wanted to make sure that the athletes who are wearing these jerseys
00:46experience. That's the level of obsession that we put in place as we think about these games.
