In Episode 1312 of The Thoughtful Entrepreneur, host Josh Elledge interviews Richard Blank, the CEO and co-founder of Costa Rica's Call Center. The episode focuses on how Blank built a premier nearshore business processing outsourcing (BPO) company from scratch in Central America, highlighting advanced telemarketing strategies and the human elements of scaling a business. Key Interview Highlights Founding Story: Richard explains how moving to Costa Rica at age 27 to teach English at a friend's business inspired him to open his own state-of-the-art call center in San José. The Costa Rican Advantage: The discussion covers why Costa Rica is an ideal outsourcing hub, citing its high-caliber college-educated workforce, strong cultural alignment with North America, and thriving ecotourism. Linguistic Focus: Richard breaks down how he builds confidence in his frontline agents by expanding their vocabulary and teaching them how to read phonetic micro-expressions. Workplace Gamification: The episode explores the unique culture at Costa Rica's Call Center, which features Central America's largest collection of restored American pinball machines and antique Rockola jukeboxes to motivate employees. Addressing Misconceptions: Richard clarifies that choosing a nearshore center isn't simply about chasing the lowest possible price point (as seen in offshore regions like India), but rather about investing in high-quality, professional brand representation.

00:00Tell me about, and then I'm going to have you start from here and we're going to talk
00:04about the arcade because while we were chatting, I, you know, I only saw what you had in the
00:09background there.
00:10I was on your website.
00:11I love that you guys have, that you have a gallery on your website of just photos of,
00:18you know, the premise, everything.
00:19You've got a video arcade in your office and, you know, as a classic arcade fan, you and
00:25I were just talking briefly, you know, my son and I built a main cabinet, which is multi
00:32arcade, something emulator, machine emulator.
00:35I forget what that all stands for, but it's so much fun.
00:39So it's, you know, the classic joystick console and everything like that.
00:43But you've been able to pick up quite a collection and I'm sure that, I mean, that's, that really
00:50shares a lot of wow factor in terms of like, you know, when someone's considering, okay,
00:55well, I got different places I could work.
00:57I could work at this boring, sterile place, or I could come work at a place.
01:01It's got a video arcade.
01:03Like it's no joke.
01:04You have a lot of machines and pinball too.
01:08The gamification culture.
01:09And thank you so much for bringing that up on your podcast.
01:12We got to definitely talk about dessert.
01:14I created an environment where A, it's free play.
01:16Most of these machines are older than the agents because they are original pinball.
01:20Ball machines and other retro arcade machines in an air hockey table, but you let off steam,
01:26you recharge batteries, you make friends from other departments, you hang out with your
01:29boss there, but it's when you walk through it, it puts you in a different state of mind
01:36because it reminds the agents of how I treat them, how I treat myself and reminds my clients
01:41that they need to have a game room as well.
01:44I've also had certain white glove comments where people will say, Hey, this is a professional
01:50environment.
01:50You shouldn't be having these sorts of things.
01:52And in my mind, I say, you do you, this is my company.
01:57I'm still a young kid.
01:59I know how to work hard and recess was the best class.
02:02And I just really wanted to fulfill.
02:06One of my childhood dreams was to have the silver spoons, Ricky Schroeder game room.
02:10And I did it.
02:12And since I have the space, I have the money.
02:14I go treasure hunting.
02:16And you were mentioning this beautiful Ricola behind me.
02:18I have Wurlitzers and Seaburgs as well.
02:21And I, one man's trash, Josh is another man's treasure.
02:25And they have no idea what they're sitting on.
02:28And so I'm always driving around this country and talking to some guy.
02:31And my problem is I don't have a poker face because if I see this machine, I'm almost
02:37like Bo Derek and Dudley Moore in the movie, 10, I'm running towards it on a beach.
02:41And my guy's like, calm down.
02:43I'm going to let them know that something is not working.
02:45I go, come on, just offer them a fair price and let everybody win.
02:49Awesome.
