00:00But I just, I don't get it.
00:01Is there anything comparable anywhere else in sports that you can think of?
00:06Then you're paying this guy starter money, and he just can't be out there to start the game.
00:13He has to hang out in the dugout and get loose and watch somebody else do the job, and then
00:19he goes in.
00:20It is bizarre.
00:21Like, Jason Tatum's like, I don't go in until the second quarter.
00:24Right.
00:24Sorry.
00:26Unless you had something where it was like a rehab stint of somebody coming off of something.
00:31When have we seen somebody go, I just, I mentally, I can't do it.
00:35I just can't do it.
00:36Even though you gave me the contract, I just can't do it.
00:38And the team's like, we'll try to ask him to do it once.
00:42Oh, he's right.
00:42He can't do it.
00:43But guess what?
00:44Nobody else can either now.
00:46Right.
00:46Because he looks great once he gets in there.
00:48But then he's inheriting four runs.
00:51So he's like, well, the pressure's off.
00:53This game's probably out of reach.
00:55So does he ever talk about what it could potentially be?
01:00Is it because when he does come in, there's no pressure because generally he's behind?
01:07I think that's probably what it is.
01:10It's so counterintuitive.
01:13I'd rather the team already be losing once I get in there.
01:17Because the only way, I'd have to say, has he ever came in in the second inning when it's been
01:230-0?
01:24Because what does he look like then?
01:26Because it seems like usually when he comes in, the other team has already scored three or four runs.
01:31So is it because there's too much pressure on him when he's asked to...
01:39He was a starter.
01:41He's a starter in Major League Baseball.
01:44He was being paid that way.
01:47Right.
01:47That shouldn't be a problem.
01:49No, but something happened this year.
01:51I know.
01:52We talk about the mental side of the game, sports.
01:59We've seen it before in how players, we all make fun of Chuck Knobloch or Don Trell Willis who pitched
02:06for the Florida Marlins.
02:08It's like the mental aspect of the game of what happened from last year where he was still inconsistent,
02:16but he could start in the first inning and have good outings to where it seems like the only time
02:21he has good outings
02:22is when he comes in in the second inning and the team's behind.
02:25I don't get it.
02:26Also, how many guys this season have been thrown out at home plate, speaking of Friday night's game?
02:33Many.
02:33Shime, like, it's got to be six, seven guys thrown out at home this season.
02:41Six, seven.
02:42I see what you did there.
02:44And it's also by a country mile.
02:47How much do they pay the third place?
02:49It's so frustrating.
02:51Well, what's frustrating about this team is, so over, and I know they just won the series against the Guardians,
02:57who are a really good club this year, but it's like once the bats come alive,
03:04then you struggle with, like, your middle relief crew.
03:07Right.
03:07Or you have injuries here or there.
03:10Or Bayo, like this, who was supposed to be baby Pedro coming up.
03:13Now he can't start a game.
03:15Like, even when you try, he just can't do it.
03:18So you have to go back to having the opener.
03:20It's like every, it's like whack-a-mole where every week there's a different, weird, new issue with the team.
03:26Right.
03:26And you're right, because, Greg, I think you brought this up last week.
03:30I forget which game where it was, where Weister came in, and it was like one of these games that
03:35you had an opportunity to win,
03:36and now all of a sudden, you're right, you're middle relief pitching when you're hitting the ball well.
03:42You're not able to keep leads.
03:44And so it seems like when are they going to put it together?
03:47And that's why when we always talk to Bresbato, we talk to Sam Kennedy, and they say, oh, we believe
03:53in this team.
03:54We believe this is a playoff team.
03:55And I asked them, I said, well, what have they shown you all year long that shows you that they
04:02can go on one of them runs?
04:04Because that's what you're going to need.
04:06The rotation outside of Bayo?
04:07Yep.
04:09That's the only thing you can look at that has, like, any real consistency, right?
04:12Right.
04:13And because, you know, when you look at a team like the Celtics or you look at the teams like
04:17the Bruins or something like that,
04:18you always look at it and you go, when there's a lot of games, it's not just a 17-week
04:23season,
04:23you look and you go, okay, where is there where they went on that run where you could go, okay,
04:28this is a good team.
04:29They can do it consistently for, you know, a sustained amount of time.
04:34We haven't seen that with the Red Sox.
04:36So, how can they say, we feel good about this team being a playoff team?
04:40Well, no, listen, we talked about it earlier.
04:44I, you know, you got a little bit of bad news about Garrett Crochet.
04:49So, he's not going to throw live tomorrow.
04:53That's a lap thing or something, like tightness.
04:58I don't want to get into injuries.
04:59That's Sam Kennedy's space.
05:02Please, heaven for baby, say something and then the player comes out and confirms it.
05:05Well, if Greg says something, then we need to run with it because he's been spot on.
05:10So, you can't count on Crochet for a bit.
05:13You can't count on Roman Anthony because he tried to swing on Friday and that didn't go well.
05:21So, he shut down for a little bit.
05:23So, any of that help that you thought you were getting there has been delayed.
05:28And the thing with Roman that we really haven't talked about very much is, what does it mean if they
05:35do try to continue rushing him back and he alters his swing based on that injury?
05:40You know, like there's always the question of, okay, it's a torn ligament.
05:45Will the injury itself get worse?
05:47But on top of that, if he's overcompensating with something with his swing, and I'm not some swing mechanics expert,
05:53but wouldn't you think that if he starts gripping the bat differently and he starts doing something weird, that could
05:59throw him off for a while?
06:01Wasn't the biggest issue with him last year when he was maybe struggling a little bit and then hit the
06:07ball well?
06:07And this was part of like, you know, I could see where people come to the Bregman defense.
06:13Yeah.
06:13Wasn't it more about his swing and him changing it?
06:16Yeah.
06:16And did that affect his back with the, was it the back or oblique injury?
06:22He had oblique and then he had back this year.
06:24Right.
06:24Oblique last year.
06:25So, we've seen him change his swing a couple times already, or at least you're wondering if maybe the ring
06:33finger is going to change it again.
06:35See, the crochet thing, I look at it being, yes, you want to get him back as soon as possible,
06:41but you have a little bit more patience and time with him because your four pitches that go out there
06:47consistently, Gray, Suarez, Tully, and, you know, Suarez, maybe not so much.
06:55But, I mean, but they've been consistent, you know.
06:58He's a wild card.
06:59Yeah, but they've been pretty consistent, you know, over the past several weeks, month, month and a half.
07:03Now, the hitting's where you've had the real issue.
07:06So, if you're rushing anybody back, you would think that it would be Roman Anthony more than Garrett Crochet because
07:13you're like, all right, we really need help when it comes to hitting.
07:17Well, I don't think they're going to rush him back now after what happened.
07:20So, I think they're going to try to figure out their injury messaging going forward, I would hope.
07:29But doesn't this throw a monkey wrench in the thing that I think, Megal, you brought up earlier today is
07:34if you really want to move on from Jaron Duran, how can you do that if Roman Anthony might not
07:42be ready to go?
07:43Oh, what, because there's going to be, like, some fan revolt against you moving Jaron Duran because nobody else is
07:49there?
07:49No, no, no, no, no, no.
07:50I think because if you're moving him and you're going, okay, we're trying to get pieces back to maybe make
07:55a run, but you're taking out one of your, you know, hot of bats right now, but you're not replacing
08:00him.
08:01I think you just own up that you're selling.
08:03Like, you just own up that it becomes a fire sale because that's how bad you are.
08:06You stop pretending like that wildcard spot is in reach because it's you and a whole mess of other teams
08:13that actually have more talented pieces on the roster that they can look towards and say, that's why we're going
08:18to be good later.
08:19So, then you would sell off, I think, you know, Curtis always talks about it.
08:23Then you would sell off a guy like Chapman.
08:25You might sell off a guy like Chapman.
08:26Well, Chapman's, like, the one that everybody's going to want from this roster.
08:29Yeah, I mean, basically, when it comes to what you can sell, you can sell Chapman, you can sell Sonny
08:35Gray.
08:36I mean, you just got Contreras.
08:40Would you want to sell Contreras?
08:42This is where, don't you think it's interesting, and there's no way to ask Breslow this, but it's like.
08:47Well, you can ask him whatever you want.
08:49And he's kind of a lame duck sitting there, and he's simultaneously looking at, these are the guys I brought
08:54in who are good.
08:55Like, Wilson Contreras is good.
08:57And now I'm going to have to turn around and deal the one good deal that I had in the
09:01offseason.
09:02Like, you know what I mean?
09:03Like, the one good deal that I made in the offseason.
09:04And so, I don't, I feel like just keeping him in that role goes counterintuitive to what might be good
09:11for the team long term.
09:12Well, but I think to Greg's point, looking at the Contreras contract, he'd only have one and then a club
09:19option in 28.
09:20So, he might be a guy that you would sell because he's not part of your long-term future, right?
09:26When we talked to Bresport, and he talked about, you know, guys that were untouchable, he was like, more of
09:32these are guys that we see in the long term.
09:35And if you're like, to your point, Mago, if you're like, all right, we're selling, there's no way we're going
09:39to.
09:39They're not going to, they're, they might do that.
09:41They're never going to say it.
09:44They're never going to, they're never going to acknowledge that.
09:47But you have until the end of the month, though.
09:49No, but they want people to keep going to Fenway Park, like.
09:53Well, the end of July.
09:54And keep making the registers ring.
09:57Like, that's what they want.
09:57Right, but Greg, the trade deadline in Major League Baseball is July, the end of July, right?
10:02But you have to.
10:03So, we're going to sit around and wait until then for anybody to do anything.
10:08And the team is going to be, at that point, 14 games below 500.
10:13Right, but if they're 14 games below 500, isn't it then where we're going, hey, we are completely selling everything.
10:21And we are focusing on when, whenever it is we come back.
10:25If there's a season next year, that's our focus or after the lockout.
10:29So, we basically have, what, two months of maybe the front office and them guys are looking at like, all
10:37right,
10:37can we really make a big chunk?
10:39But listen, the believers will tell you that they just won a series against a really good baseball team.
10:46Well, they're delusional.
10:49They've won a series against good baseball, against good baseball teams.
10:53It's not that.
10:53It's what happens after they win a series.
10:55Then they lose four or five in a row.
10:57That's been the issue with this team.
10:59If they win a series and then you go, okay, after that they win four games in a row,
11:04then you're like, all right, if you're a believer, you go,
11:06well, now maybe I have even more faith.
11:09But I think it's going to come down to where they are at the end of July.
11:13And if they're not anywhere close, I think that's when you might see that complete fire sale.
