In a year when the American League is wide open, are the Red Sox blowing their chances by their inability to score runs?
Transcript
00:00Oh, well, you can just hear the disappointment in his voice.
00:03He just needed one more strike.
00:04He just got to get him one more strike.
00:05He got the guy out.
00:07No, but no, he couldn't get it.
00:08Made for an easy Sunday, though.
00:09You could just choose to do other things right at that point.
00:11Pretty much, you know, it was like, okay, PGA's on.
00:14Right off the bat, you know, I mean, the Red Sox,
00:16they flew home from Atlanta on Sunday with an 8-1 loss
00:19and approximately zero answers about what to do with Brian Baio.
00:23He was bad, like really bad.
00:25Seven runs, eight hits, three walks over five innings bad.
00:28His ERA now sits around a rotund 7.16,
00:32which sucks because pitching is the one facet of their game
00:35that hasn't been horribly embarrassing,
00:37and now you've got this thing, you know, big fly in the mud.
00:41You didn't see Baio on Twitch, though, complaining about it, though.
00:42You know, he's taking it like a man, so you want to give that to him?
00:46He's not pissing anybody off at ESPN.
00:48He's state your source, that's what I say.
00:50Oh, we got to talk about that later.
00:51By the way, I love the fact that Stephen A. is answering to it.
00:54Oh, yeah, oh, yeah, good for him.
00:56Oh, yeah.
00:56Kidding me?
00:56As he should.
00:57As he should, damn right.
00:58Well, the whole thing fell apart in the first inning right there.
01:00He served up just a middle cutter to Austin Riley,
01:03and Riley, you just deposit that MF for like 431 feet.
01:08Well, it's the cutter.
01:08He's given up five of his ten home runs on cutters.
01:11Merloni's like, why are you throwing the cutter?
01:12Put the pitch away.
01:14I will say this if I – this is not a day to defend the Red Sox
01:17in any form or fashion, but, Ted, you didn't like Baio as a bulk guy, right?
01:21Like, starting after an opener is just embarrassing, humiliating.
01:25I had no problem with them starting the game with Baio.
01:28It's time to at least see if he's a man again, see if he's a pitcher,
01:31see if he's worked through some kinks.
01:33It had not work out.
01:33It didn't work out well.
01:34So now you know.
01:35Now you just send him to AAA.
01:37So – but it's not Tracy's fault that he started him and he sucked.
01:42Well, it's not, but, I mean, you can also look at his previous two starts
01:44where they had a starter, a little fluffer for him, you know,
01:47comes in in the first inning to just get him through the first inning,
01:50and then he comes in.
01:51That's not doing anybody any good.
01:53I mean, kids, that's not sustainable.
01:55I hear you, but you look at his ERA, he's got an over a nine
01:58when he doesn't have the fluffer, and he has a 1.35 when he has the fluffer.
02:02So I don't know.
02:03I know it's hard.
02:04A fluffer sounds even worse.
02:05But he's right.
02:06Like, the numbers are ridiculous when you have them when you don't.
02:09It's just – he's – they have no answers for him,
02:12and I don't know whether – what would you do with him right now?
02:15Oh, you'd send him to AAA.
02:15You'd send him down.
02:16That's it.
02:16He's got an option.
02:17He goes down, gets himself right there,
02:19and they have a couple weeks with some off days,
02:21and Crochet should be back.
02:23You don't need him.
02:24The rest of your rotation is good.
02:25That's the frustrating part, Rich.
02:27This pitching staff is playoff caliber.
02:29Their bullpen, when Slayton is in there, is playoff caliber.
02:33They are blowing it in a year where the American League is historically bad,
02:39and, you know, they're going to go into the lockout
02:41with one of their worst seasons of all time if they don't get turned around.
02:44Well, Narvaez said that that single pitch, the one that he rocked,
02:48mentally broke Baio for the rest of the out.
02:50That was in the first inning.
02:51Yep, that was in the first inning.
02:52Donezo.
02:52So, I mean, aren't you supposed to have the memory of a goldfish?
02:56Isn't that the whole thing that makes a great pitcher?
02:57To survive at that position, yes.
02:59Yeah, absolutely.
03:00That is not a good sign.
03:01But then, of course, the offense did what it always does,
03:03suck dirty underwear, as the chilly guy would say.
03:06And, of course, they did what the Red Sox do best, leave runners stranded.
03:110 for 5 again.
03:12As a matter of fact, over the weekend, they win a cool 3 for 25.
03:17Nice.
03:17With runners in scoring position.
03:18Only six runs scored over the entire three-game series.
03:22And it's just wild.
03:24I mean, the numbers are disgusting.
03:25There are so many bad numbers.
03:26I don't know which one to—
03:28I got one.
03:28You got the best one?
03:29I think I got the best one.
03:31I got the best one.
03:32If you look at the—if they had the average run scored per game—
03:37Oh, this is from our guy Pat Brown from Play Tessie, I think, has this.
03:40Go ahead.
03:41It's a great one.
03:41This might be the best one.
03:42Don't you think this is—
03:43This is the best one.
03:44So, the Red Sox, if they batted just the league average in runs batted in per game,
03:50I think it's like 4.1 runs.
03:52Four and a half, I believe.
03:53Four and a half runs per game.
03:54That's average.
03:55They would have the best record in baseball.
03:58Of course they would.
03:59I mean, it's just absurd.
04:01But they knew this was going to be a problem.
04:03That's the thing that pisses me off the most.
04:06They had to have hoped that Story would have another year like he did last year.
04:10Jaron Duran wouldn't be this bad.
04:12And Roman Anthony would be like he was in the World Baseball Classic.
04:14But the thing about Trevor's story is he had a track record of not being good.
04:18Last year was an outlier.
04:19It was a total outlier.
04:21He doesn't—they don't know when it's, you know, what an outlier or when it's, you know,
04:25where they think it's trending up or down.
04:27That was the best Trevor's story was ever going to give you.
04:29So, just on him in particular, not surprised he goes on a 10-day L.
04:33They say it's kind of for a hernia.
04:35Yeah.
04:36Just, bro, just take a seat, man.
04:38Take a seat.
04:39I heard Jones and Keith talking about whether Story was the worst signing in Red Sox history.
04:42And I said, well, no.
04:44Obviously, either Carl Crawford or maybe Pablo Sandoval.
04:47I think Pablo.
04:49By the way, I still feel bad for Pablo because that picture that went viral where he swung
04:53and his belt exploded because he was so fat.
04:56Oh, that's tremendous?
04:57I didn't know that.
04:58Did it really?
04:58The belt busted?
04:59Yeah.
05:00There's an at-bat that he had that he got in so out of shape that his belt snapped while
05:07he was swinging.
05:07That's a great moment.
05:09That's not good.
05:10That's a world-class athlete right there.
05:12So, there you go.
05:13The Red Sox have scored three or fewer runs in eight straight games and four or fewer
05:17in ten straight.
05:18Do you have Chad Tracy, buddy?
05:19Let's hear Chad Tracy.
05:20I mean, just results, you could say that.
05:22But I think based on, like we always said, we're going to base it on the bullpen.
05:27If we're going to try to stay away from some lefties that are kind of overused, it didn't
05:30make sense to just throw another righty.
05:31So, it was his game.
05:32And he just didn't have a great win.
05:34That's all right.
05:34I just hate having, like, managers and coaches and players on when they're sucking.
05:39And we're going to have Chad Tracy on on Wednesday.
05:41Well, we're going to sweep the Royals, so they'll have won two in a row by the time
05:44we'll talk to Tracy.
05:44I'm sure it's a guarantee.
05:46Let's go to Steve in the truck.
05:47Steve, what's happening, Steve?
05:48Oh, boy.
05:48I know where Steve's going.
05:49Good afternoon, gentlemen.
05:50How are we doing?
05:51What's up, buddy?
05:53Ken, how are you, buddy?
05:54Hi, Steve.
05:55Ken, I love you, but I've got to ask you a question here.
05:58Okay.
05:58I don't think your boy, Davey Pedro, as you call him, has one milligram of DNA from Pedro
06:05in his blood.
06:06Okay.
06:07Because he nibbles, and then he has to throw his fastball, doesn't move, and at 73, I
06:14can hit it, all right?
06:15And they deposit it in the bleachers because he has to throw the fastball because he can't
06:20throw anything else because he nibbles, and he never hits the plate.
06:23So where is the paper with this kid?
06:25Tell me.
06:26Okay.
06:26Pedro Martinez himself said that his pitches are better than the ones that I threw.
06:33When his sinker is on, he's nasty because he couples that with the changeup, which is,
06:37you know, erratic, but when it's good, it's good.
06:40So that's not me saying this.
06:42This was Pedro Martinez saying, this guy's got, he's got more talent than I do.
06:45It's three words.
06:46And all those words you just gave us, there's three words you said, when he's on.
06:50Right.
06:50Right.
06:51That's just not, oh, boy, that is, that's bad.
06:54I found Pablo Sandoval's belt.
06:56Smokes.
06:56That's incredible.
06:57Do you remember when there was that picture of him, like when he signed with the Red Sox and
07:01everyone was worried about his weight already?
07:03And there's that picture of him on his birthday and someone brought him that gigantic Sunday
07:07and he was the happiest man on the planet.
07:10Whoa.
07:11God bless him.
07:12But, but he's, he's the reason the Red Sox don't spend money anymore.
07:16Guys like, you know, contracts like that, but getting back to bail, I don't know what
07:20you do with, I feel like they've given him so many opportunities, Ken.
07:24I don't know what else you can do with this guy.
07:25It's simple.
07:25You send them down and have them figured out.
07:27I mean, they spent a lot of money on him too.
07:28That's the other thing.
07:29Breslow has given young guys like him and Christian Campbell some money.
07:32Was that a Breslow side of Brian Baio?
07:34Yep.
07:35So he's kind of the poster boy for that new thinking contracts where they get them early
07:41with the hopes of the projections tell you that there's going to be a savings down the end.
07:46This team is just built on hopes and dreams and it sucks.
07:49Well, they're built on pitching and they're doing that pretty well.
07:51And that's part of Breslow's, I don't want to say it's all his fault, but he's a former
07:55pitcher.
07:56So he came in and that's all he cares about.
07:58I give him no credit.
07:59I give him no credit because your job is to build a team.
08:02You can't just concentrate on one part of it and say, well, I did my, I did this part,
08:06right?
08:07You have to build a team.
08:08And if that meant given and taken with pitching to get some bats out here to have a more equal
08:12team, he gets none, no credit.
08:14And I just pisses me off because I know that I've heard people say that same thing.
08:18Like, well, I mean, at least the pitching is good.
08:19Yeah, but your team sucks.
08:21Like, you're not going to, you're not going to do anything.
08:23And in a year where the American League sucks, you still aren't in the playoffs right now.
08:27And the guys they fired were all like the pitching, uh, were all the hitting, you know,
08:31yeah.
08:31So you figure like the pitching guys, I don't know.
08:33It just doesn't make any sense.
08:34You've got the, the, the driveline guy now, Sauteropoulos.
08:37They're worse since they made all these changes.
08:39Um, you know, batting average has gone down.
08:42Runs per game has gone down from four to 2.9 since the firings.
08:45Where's Johnny Combs?
08:46Let's get him in here and regulate.
08:47Do you need a season?
08:49Like, let's just get the purge.
08:50I don't know, like you got a full overhaul, like top to bottom, just kind of reassess what
08:56you're doing.
08:56Can I play you something, Ted?
08:58I want you to hear this because like, I like, like you, and like, I think we all are in
09:02the
09:02same boat that you just want them to do something like you can't, this can't be the status quo.
09:07You can't continue with this and just say, Hey, sorry, let's let the cards fall where they
09:12may.
09:12And you know what?
09:13The Ailey stinks.
09:14And maybe we got a chance.
09:15Hey, three games behind the wild card.
09:16That's true.
09:17That's true, Ted.
09:18And it's not Memorial Day yet.
09:19No, it's not.
09:20But Ken Rosenthal, do you have the Rosenthal clip by any chance, Stiz?
09:23I know you sent it to us, but you know, if you think this team might get the message
09:28and start making some moves, well, this is the sound of Ken Rosenthal peeing in your
09:32cornflakes.
09:33You got it there, Stiz?
09:35Yeah, he's looking it up.
09:36In the meanwhile, check this out.
09:37Let's have some fun, shall we?
09:38The Red Sox have not one, not two, but three of the worst OPS leaders in Major League Baseball.
09:43At number nine, Trevor Story at .5547.
09:46Number four, worst, Jaron Duran with .534.
09:50And guess who the worst in the league is?
09:51I got it.
09:52Caleb Durbin.
09:52Ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding,
09:54What do I win?
09:55You win glory.
09:58Fortunate glory is what you win.
09:59You got Rosenthal over there.
10:00Let's take a listen.
10:01They're not going to give up yet, and they're not going to give up yet for the reason I
10:04just stated.
10:05The American League is weak.
10:08So I believe the Red Sox this morning are only three, three and a half games out of the
10:12wildcard race.
10:13So at that point, you're thinking, all right, we get hot.
10:17We get our offense going.
10:18Here we go.
10:18Maybe they will.
10:19Maybe they won't.
10:20Certainly isn't going right now.
10:22Then we have a chance.
10:23They certainly pitch well enough.
10:25Now, come July, if it's not looking great, then you do sell pieces off.
10:30But you don't give up yet.
10:32And yes, Aroldis Chapman, when he was doing his hugs the other night, going into the bullpen,
10:36people thought, hmm, here go the Red Sox, selling off pieces already.
10:40It didn't happen.
10:41It was a false hug watch.
10:43So the Red Sox will remain intact, at least for the foreseeable future.
10:47So I kept hearing people saying, oh, he's a false hug watch.
10:51I've heard people say after that video went viral that he does that all the time.
10:56Does he?
10:56I don't know.
10:57I don't know.
10:59I have no idea.
11:00But to make the link that he's going to be traded the next day is kind of weird.
11:05I don't know.
11:06Pitching staff's tight.
11:06They're hugging out there.
11:07I mean, this is a good group.
11:08It's a playoff pitching staff, Rich.
11:10Oh, yeah.
11:11They are just tight.
11:12And they're living on hopes and dreams.
11:13Not only this, here's another one stat to throw in here.
11:16So Red Sox stats had this.
11:17In 212 plate appearances for the week, they had eight walks.
11:21There's only one time since 2002 they've had fewer walks in a week where they've had over
11:25200 plate appearances.
11:27And this year is historic in baseball.
11:29Jason Stark was pointing out there's more walk because of ABS.
11:32There's more walks per game since 1955.
11:36So despite historic high walk totals, the Red Sox don't do it.
11:40So they've chosen just to swing away early and put you out of your misery with a 4-3 roll
11:44over.
11:44And the weather's nice.
11:45And I want to go watch good games at Fenway.
11:47It comes back to the purse.
11:48Yes, yes.
11:49It does.
11:49Yeah.
11:50You're blowing a great, like, this is awesome.
11:52This is baseball weather.
11:54And I got to go see a crappy product down in Fenway.
11:56We just didn't have a great one.
11:57That's all right.
11:57Yeah, that's right.
11:58Thank you very much.
