'Baby Pedro' is back?! Bello went 7 innings strong in the win. Can Red Sox sweep Detroit tonight? When it comes to Roman Anthony and Sonny Gray, good news on the injury front?
Transcript
00:00Well, I'll tell you one thing, baby Pedro is back, Curtis.
00:03That's good news.
00:04Am I the only person that the second somebody on this team does something well,
00:08I'm like, trade him right now.
00:09Bring him out of the bullpen.
00:11You're like, hey, that's value.
00:13That's his specialty.
00:14Keep him away from the first inning.
00:15Oh, great.
00:16I mean, not only did the Red Sox get a rare win,
00:20but a couple pieces of good news.
00:23Sounds like you may have avoided a big issue with Roman Anthony.
00:28He's going to be day-to-day with a wrist sprain.
00:32I'm assuming that the hand specialist was able to diagnose that yesterday.
00:38So that's good news.
00:40And Sonny Gray, just in time for spring,
00:44will be growing leaves and branching out and can, I guess, go tonight.
00:50So that's a couple pieces of good Red Sox news this morning, Curtis.
00:54I can't wait.
00:55I've already got it planned.
00:56And we're going to watch the Sox in my room for the first three innings
00:59and then in Greg's room for the next three innings at Hilton Head.
01:02I was saying this to Megal before we came on here.
01:06Have your – because she brought up the Roman Anthony being day-to-day.
01:11And have your expectations changed for him?
01:13Because mine's happened.
01:15I'm kind of like, you know.
01:16I can't do this with you every morning.
01:18You have these outlandish takes that are –
01:22How are they outlandish?
01:24Hold on.
01:24You're done with Roman Anthony?
01:25No, no, not done with him.
01:26But just like, you know, I'm pulling way back from the table.
01:30I see.
01:30He's going to be a utility guy, like a lifelong utility guy.
01:35No, no.
01:35He's not finished in three years and he's selling insurance.
01:38Yeah, but you had him win.
01:39He's going to be like Brian Dobbins.
01:40Is he going to be managing a true value hardware in three years?
01:44No, but you had him win an MVP in the face of the league.
01:46Yes, I still –
01:47So you're still on that?
01:48I still believe in the guy, yeah.
01:50Okay, yeah.
01:51My expectations have tampered way down.
01:53Like this season?
01:54Oh, yeah.
01:55Greg was like beating the drum.
01:57No, no.
01:57No, he wasn't the only one.
01:58No, I know that.
01:59That's what I'm saying.
02:00Most people were saying MVP face of the league.
02:04I didn't have him, to be clear, Megal,
02:06I didn't have him winning the MVP this season.
02:09I have high expectations for the guy.
02:12Yeah, mine remain high too, just not for this season.
02:15Yeah.
02:17But he's certainly – he played half a season last year up here.
02:23He's now dealing with the whole kerfuffle that is the manager switch,
02:30you know, in April.
02:32And he's – I get it.
02:35He's had some – he's dealt with some injuries.
02:37I don't know that you can declare him to be injury prone and done or whatever.
02:42No, I'm not declaring him to be done,
02:44but let's not act like we would not be in the drum after World Baseball Classic
02:48and saying, you know, maybe he not winning the MVP,
02:52but he was going to be in the race.
02:54He was the face of the league.
02:55He was the – you know, the next coming of, you know, Bryce Hopper,
02:59Mike Trout, whatever, you know, Shohei Ohtani.
03:01I think now the expectations have gone to, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
03:08We were doing 100 miles an hour.
03:09Let's kick this thing back to about 30.
03:11Yeah, I'm – if I had to pick a side, I'm closer to Wiggy than Greg
03:15because doesn't it almost feel worse that there's nothing wrong?
03:21Like, you swung the bat and then it hurt and you went down below
03:26and it hurt when you swung again.
03:27Then it's like I have to fly back to Boston even though everything's been negative here.
03:32Especially the thing I don't get – he's already got his money.
03:36I understand if, like, you're trying to get service time.
03:38Like, Tristan Casas, I think, milks injuries because he wants to become a free agent
03:41without really getting damage to his body.
03:43And I think that's backfired because I don't think he's going to get very much money
03:46when he is a free agent, but if you already have $200 million guaranteed
03:50coming your way, the team is in desperate need of wins
03:54and at the first sign of discomfort or serious discomfort, you're in Boston
03:58and you don't even have an injury really?
04:01I didn't perceive that he was the one who demanded that he come back to Boston
04:06and be checked out by a hand specialist.
04:08I was assuming that was the team's decision, so I don't know.
04:13But, Wiggy, don't players – players dictate that in a way.
04:17Like, if you're saying you're in excruciating pain, the organization's like,
04:20all right, let's get it checked out.
04:21Whereas if you're like, oh, I'm going to give it a go tomorrow,
04:23I don't think they fly him back to Boston.
04:24Well, I think a lot of players too nowadays, they tend to get their own second opinion.
04:30He's on ZocDoc looking for hand specialists in Boston.
04:34Oh, believe it, nowadays.
04:35I mean, think about it.
04:36You know, we had Gronk on yesterday.
04:38Think about some of the medical stuff that he had some issues with
04:42throughout his playing career and some of the doctors at that time where I think now –
04:47Which caused a couple uncomfortable interactions between he and the Patriots.
04:54Yeah, so I think a lot of players now, they trust the team's medical staff,
04:59but they want to get their own second opinion.
05:02And I'm not saying the Roman Anthony thing for me is the injury stuff.
05:06I'm just looking at it, the expectations that we set on this guy to where we are now coming way
05:15back.
05:15I mean, people had him, you know, myself included,
05:18where we were talking about the over and under of home runs went from 18,
05:21we should have it up to 25.
05:23I mean, the guy's got one home run on the season.
05:26So when we start to look at – that's why I said when we start to look at Roman Anthony,
05:31because Meggo and I, our conversation was like, oh, he's fine.
05:34I'm like, all right.
05:35Like, he's not – like, I don't even look at him as, like, being a major factor anymore.
05:41Well, everybody was overly excited about the season.
05:46I mean, Willier Abreu sat on this show and promised you 30 home runs in spring training.
05:52Oh, he could be on pace to hit 30.
05:55I mean, but the expectations that we had about Roman Anthony were much different than any player on that team.
06:03And, you know, he's dealing with some injuries, but I think even when he's healthy, we're like,
06:08wait a second, is this kid real – is he really what we're saying he's going to be?
06:13Well, time will tell.
06:15Yeah?
06:15Yes.
06:16Roman wasn't built in a day.
06:17Time will tell.
06:18Red Sox with a win.
