If the Tigers keep losing, do you believe that AJ Hinch will be on the hot seat?
Transcript
00:00he's a sneakerhead himself evan jenkins uh 248-539-9797 all right so a few things on the
00:06table today we are discussing uh possibility of scoobal being moved and and that pretty much
00:16dominated the first hour of the show we'll circle back to it but we're doing it because the tigers
00:20are coming off a super disappointing end to this angel series um they if you think this team
00:28was destined to collapse they keep giving you reason to believe that and nobody's mad at you
00:34everybody reaches a breaking point at some point where they just pull the plug on a team in a season
00:38and um it's you know we have taken the approach that well what's the best you can get out of
00:44a
00:44bad situation i mentioned this a couple days ago but if you were a person that watched tigers the
00:49last couple years and was happy with the success but thought that they had overachieved and it
00:54wasn't sustainable and they needed a lot more you probably deep down are happy with what you're
00:59seeing right now because it's going to force their hand we ask teams to define themselves all the time
01:06before you get to trade deadlines and they're getting to the point where it would be almost
01:13miraculous for them to get within striking distance it's not yet there's still 105 games to go we still
01:21have two months before the trade deadline and a lot can happen in two months but what you don't want
01:26to be is an undefined team not sure what to do you do nothing you don't make the playoffs you
01:33know
01:33you'd rather have a full-scale sell-off than that obviously and they got a ton to sell and the
01:38good
01:39news is they're spending money whether people realize it or not they have a top 10 payroll in the game
01:47210 million and if they're going to commit to spending money and basically sell off parts that
01:54probably aren't going to be here next year and replenish the organization with great young talent
01:59that's making the best out of a bad situation yeah they'll have assets certainly if they continue to
02:05play this type of baseball and the question is at what point do they start to sell off those assets
02:10i
02:11mean the biggest piece of course is scoobal and and you can't move him until you know that he's
02:16100 uh with his pitching but it sounds like that's going to happen sooner than later which is good news
02:23on a couple of fronts but also a little sad because if this team continues to plummet and now they're
02:29going
02:29to chicago to take on a white socks team that's playing pretty well you know they could find themselves
02:3514 15 games under 500 which is brutal when you think about it nobody wants to see that from the
02:41tigers but this is where we're at right now and but if they're there at least like you said you've
02:47defined yourself so they know what they have to do moving forward and they've got the biggest asset of
02:52all the biggest chip in the game which is tarik scoobal assuming he can come back and pitch well enough
02:57to prove to teams he's healthy and ready to go for the rest of the season yeah and they you
03:02know
03:02everybody's watching everybody's paying attention everybody's talking about it everybody's writing
03:06about it it's one of the biggest underlying stories of the trade deadline and so we're
03:11going to be paying attention to and talking about it here um and hope that scott harris now my faith
03:15in scott harris i don't not have faith in him but i also don't have faith in him i'm like
03:21undetermined
03:22i'm wait to see on scott harris you know they've they've made the playoffs with scott harris
03:29they've done on the heels of players that were acquired before scott harris got here a lot of
03:34these guys at the end of the day though you know he's you know he's got some good stuff on
03:41his resume
03:41we'll see how it plays itself out here long term but he is going to have potentially one of the
03:47most
03:47valuable pieces to sell in the last decade do you feel like aj's on a hot seat at all like
03:54have you
03:54already pressed the you know we did the thing with eisman with the the seat warmer and he has the
03:58three
03:58levels yep most car seat warmers have three levels yeah one line two lines and three lines
04:04do you think that seat is has that button been pressed yet with aj or no do i think
04:11if it's on anything it's on one in reality and and what i mean by that is i think we
04:19have a pretty
04:19good feel for when guys are going to get fired and what i mean by that is we can talk
04:24about whether
04:25or not we think someone should get fired if you look historically we've called some shots right
04:31before they've happened and my instinct tells me on this one he's he's it's probably not even on one
04:39but if it's on anything it's only one and the evidence that aj can manage a decent baseball team is
04:47there absolutely uh and if you didn't think this team was very talented in the first place
04:52and i might somebody out there i know i'm talking to you think that they and that's a manager over
04:58achieving with a group of players that that you weren't impressed with i don't know what else
05:04you're looking for right if that if you if that's your belief you have probably a bigger scott harris
05:10problem than you do an aj hinge problem i do not think he's on the hot seat do you i
05:15don't but i i feel
05:17like some fans want him to be like i mean fans are always going to be like they want the
05:22pound
05:22of flesh they want changes to happen asap punished yeah and and i can understand that uh to a point
05:29but with with hinge i just think the evidence is so strong that he's a really good manager um the
05:35case being that they've made the playoffs the last couple years with a roster that i don't think most
05:39people would think that they should be in the playoffs and yet they were and have won multiple
05:43playoff series here uh but we'll see because baseball is the sport where managers are hired
05:49to be fired sometimes guys have a really good run and then they have a bad run and they're gone
05:54quickly so i i hope he's not because i think he's the right guy well there's shake-ups right yeah
05:58sometimes you have shake-ups but you just do it to say all right we're going to try something
06:02different because this ain't working but aj's not push the right buttons as well this year he has in
06:07the past it's the herds haggler of the sport next 97 one
