Are you believing in the Tigers?

00:02some more text coming in regarding the tigers the tigers are an inconsistent team which means
00:07they're not a good team well they were bad like historically bad in may
00:14outside of that they haven't been inconsistent they were outstanding in june it's unbelievable
00:20they were better than 500 in april it's unbelievable to me that everyone gives the lions a pass for
00:25the injuries when you look at the injured factor for the tigers do you realize they had they were
00:31number two on the injury index they're still number two to the new york mets what have injuries done to
00:38the met season and has anyone looked at looked at that they're okay terrible so so why is it that
00:43nobody ever mentions the reason we talk about the tigers injuries like they're an excuse in life there
00:48are reasons there are excuses you have the second most games missed to injury in major league baseball
00:54it's a reason why you were scuffling boy it's it's it just must be a coincidence that they're playing
01:00better now right i understand that the fans are upset with the tigers because in the offseason they
01:06didn't add a bat they didn't add a significant that's fair the one that they did was homegrown
01:10kevin mcgonigal and boys have been fantastic where would this team be without him although we would we
01:15probably wouldn't be talking about any of this stuff right now if they didn't have mcgonigal who
01:20didn't have to play a day in triple a made the jump from double a to the tigers because of
01:26what
01:26he did in double a leading up to that point and of course spring training he looked like okay he's
01:31not going to be outmatched he has an incredible eye at the plate he doesn't swing at 79 of the
01:38pitches outside the zone it's remarkable how good he is um but that's the that's the addition and it's a
01:44great addition but that's not when you weren't counting on being this good tiger fans wanted to get a bat
01:49they wanted a bregman type you know doesn't have like i said it's bregman type they wanted a big
01:55bat in addition and the tigers haven't provided that the other thing that i think has fans upset
02:01with this team right now from a scott harris standpoint and it's become an aj hinch issue as
02:06well is that the reluctance to go and find something better than say jami jones i cannot believe jami jones
02:16is still on the roster it's nothing against him all right he he was amazing for this team last year
02:22in his role you're going to hit against lefties when be our specialist ops well above 900 last year
02:27amazing this year yikes i've wondered if there's any sort of just just hear me out i've wondered if
02:35there's any sort of passive aggressiveness in terms of because i find it inexplicable that he
02:40continues to play him so is aj hinch being passive aggressive towards scott harris hey this is what
02:46you're going to stick me with all right i'm going to put him in the most high leverage spots and
02:50he's
02:50going to fall on his face every single time the tigers have a 16.5 chance to win the division
02:55they have a higher percentage chance to win the division than jami jones does of getting a hit
03:01you believe that well it's i i to answer your question no i don't think it's passive aggressive
03:07against scott harris i think these are moves that are made between the two of them i think there
03:11might be some stubbornness by aj hinch and he keeps looking at last year and saying we saw what he
03:17did
03:17last year why can't he be that and i'm amazed it's lasted this long and i'm waiting to see waiting
03:25for
03:25that that tweet to come across from the tigers pr department saying that jami jones has been
03:30dfa'd and they have brought up max anderson or they've brought up jace jace young or whomever
03:37cory jolks um waiting to see today if anything uh shakes out with the dylan dingler situation
03:45you know but there's i i understand why tiger fans are upset when it comes to the lineup
03:50and they didn't do enough in the offseason to add another that another piece to this team to the
03:55everyday lineup and i think the reluctance that scott harris has had is because and he gets said as
04:00much they don't want to block guys when they get their chance so the guys are the bottom end of
04:05this
04:05roster they're either platoon players or or maybe a legitimate guy who's playing every day but isn't
04:11doesn't deserve to like a zach mckinstry type so i i don't like the block excuse for this reason
04:17you have to have offensive players who are producing you can't wait for everybody you can wait for some
04:23guys you can wait for colt keith but when two-thirds of your lineup are guys you're waiting on
04:29that and and the rest of the team is ready to compete and win now that leaves you wanting
04:35yeah so and i and i get that and i'd like to see them find i think there are certainly
04:40players on
04:41this roster that they could say okay we've seen enough and maybe it happens in this after the all-star
04:48break maybe they they say okay now we're gonna we're ready to take a look at max anderson we didn't
04:53want to before because he didn't show the discipline at the plate he wasn't walking enough now he's
04:57walking at a reasonable rate he's playing fine in the field he's he's stinging the ball okay maybe
05:03now it's an opportunity and and it may happen let's say for instance they do decide to trade
05:07glaber torres well if they trade glaber torres then you could promote max anderson and then he plays
05:13every day at second base and he's not blocked because i understand the theory of not wanting to
05:17bring a guy up to only be a platoon player not bring a guy up to play one out of
05:21three games
05:22you know just for the righty righty righty lefty matchup or whatever i get that and i get that
05:27you don't think the max clark is ready okay i'll trust you on that uh you know it's not like
05:33max
05:33clark has a an 890 ops and you know he and he's hitting 290 i mean he's he's hit all
05:40right okay he's
05:41been okay yeah i mean he's i think his ops is is like 760 yeah he's he's been good but
05:46not not great
05:47and and they still want him to learn a bit but does that does that mean he won't see the
05:51light
05:51of day in the second half or i mean we're in the second half but say after august no he
05:56might he
05:57might but that's why it's imperative this team does something in the next few weeks let us know
06:03and i don't mean something from a from a scott harris standpoint i mean something from a tiger
06:06standpoint sure so where is the line of blazing that you're that you're still winning games and you
06:12know if it becomes defined that the only reason you're winning games is because you have outstanding
06:15starting pitching and because the top five guys in your batting order get the job done but the
06:20bottom four guys in the order are still atrocious give me another look at the bottom four guys in
06:24the order there's gonna be in the next few weeks a bleep or get off the pot moment right and
06:30so for me
06:31the line of demarcation has been i need you to be within three games of a playoff berth on the
06:3631st
06:37honor before the 31st you're within four now i also said that if they fall to eight back and 10
06:45days
06:45ago they were seven back that you've lost the right to have any say on on what happens they're
06:51going to firmly sell what is the line of demarcation for you i said three games by the 31st of
06:57july you
06:57got to be within three what what i think what and when i think that's fair to say i i
07:01mean i'm looking
07:03at really what what they can do in the next couple weeks to me it's not even july 31st it's
07:08okay are you
07:09still winning at this pace you're winning two out of three games are you taking a series you know is
07:14that
07:14what you're doing uh getting to that point and i mean there are four games out of the wild card
07:19now
07:19they make up one more game look if that happens that could happen tonight you know so we'll watch
07:26and see where that's at but i don't know if i if i necessarily have it's hard to pin down
07:30a line
07:30of demarcation i don't mean to avoid the question sometimes it's a feeling right sometimes that you
07:35you feel whether you're in it or not yeah i mean it's it and it is a feel thing to
07:39kind of see where
07:40they're at and if the i mean is the starting pitching are they are they above their skis
07:45there right now are they going well beyond what we ever expected i mean are we bound to see troy
07:50melton's have a meltdown at one point casey mize and and you know scuba i mean these guys have been
07:56incredible but the relief the relief pitching has provided about as much relief as sandpaper does
08:02on a hemorrhoid so your mason miller thing to me is incredibly interesting and you and i both are on
08:08record we'd move max clark to get him i would i would as well tigers data tweeted this out uh
08:14last night tiger starters over the last 12 games for amber valdez has pitched 11 innings and his era
08:22over that time is 7.36 the rest of the starters have pitched 60 innings of baseball and have a
08:290.75
08:30earned run average it's incredible that is unbelievable how good that they and who's making the most money
08:37of that starting group again which which of those starters is making the most money well school
08:41oh framber oh is is technically i guess he is 35 and who's who's pitching the worst right now
08:48yeah yeah just saying yeah he's when he's when he's bad he's he's bad when he's good he's great
08:55uh and he needs to have more great starts than bad starts uh john's in clinton township welcome 971
09:01hey john hey thanks guys for taking my call i appreciate it um i am someone who has followed
09:07the tigers and knows tigers history for a long long time i can appreciate uh tigers fans frustrations
09:12with this team i was at the astros game a couple weeks ago on a sunday afternoon and i had
09:17to watch
09:17jemai jones and it's 141 batting average um but when i told my dad about this my frustration
09:24because there was a guy named enos cabell in the 70s i'll spare you his stats if you want to
09:29look up
09:29baseball reference you can he was absolutely awful and for whatever reason sparky anderson
09:34stuck with him and sparky was called the worst manager in baseball at that time now of course
09:39we all know sparky anderson beloved in this town retired his number three total world series uh a
09:45legend in this town um i think tigers fans need to relax just a little bit on some of this
09:50stuff i
09:50understand the frustration i think they will move on from jemai jones as far as the line of uh
09:56demarcation i i think i'm with you mark it's got to be three or four games by the deadline
10:00um otherwise i'm selling all right well i you know it's one of those things that i'm tigers fans
10:07we've been through similar things before we'll be all right i think this team is fun it's entertaining
10:13um i'm enjoying the ride while it lasts who knows how long it'll last and how long it'll last
10:17but yeah that's just my take i thought that was funny that we've been through similar situations
10:21with these jemai jones type players yeah i don't i don't thanks for the call i don't think it's
10:26funny when you bring up enos cabello was actually a pretty good baseball player and it played two
10:30years with the tigers it was 1982 and 1983 in 1982 he had 261 with a 608 ops not that
10:38good the next
10:38year at 311 with the tigers with a 769 ops and was a 3.2 war player it's enos cabello
10:45was a good
10:45player and and before he got to the tigers was with houston he was a good player he wasn't a
10:50great
10:50player he was a good player and it's never a good sign when you're talking about current players
10:55as though i should say he had some good years it wasn't god awful like what we've seen with
10:59we're talking about jami jones like he's an illness it's something you have to get over
11:04well i mean the problem is he's a left-handed hitting specialist who's hitting 154 against
11:09lefties with a 506 ops special all right compared to last year where the numbers are ridiculously uh stark
11:16in contrast where he hit 288 against lefties with a 970 ops last year that's why aj hinch is
11:24i think in my mind what he's still looking at like you're we're not that far removed from what you
11:30were
11:30at 970 on the ops now maybe analytics are telling him something it is he's hitting the ball hard he's
11:36just having bad luck i don't know i can't explain it anymore i just wish it was done i thought
11:41this
11:41should have happened a month ago it still hasn't happened to uh to your point about using him less
11:47he's had two at bats in july that's it they have used him less because ben maljuri has now replaced
11:53him in terms of the pecking order of need a right-handed bat here comes ben maljuri 97-1
