00:16Hello and welcome to Kent Student 101 live here on KMTV. I'm Julia Dweemore. This is a program
00:22for students made by students. We've got so much in store for you, from making healthy affordable
00:27meals to showing you the best trails around the county, as well as answering any burning questions
00:32students may have, we've got it all here just for you. First this week is Macro Meals, where we show
00:37you ways of creating better eating habits around student life. While often the staple of student
00:43experience is fast food, it tends to not be one of the healthiest options, nor the most cost effective.
00:48So Josh Cullen Bell is here to show you that a homemade guilty pleasure meal can be made without
00:52breaking the bank. Let's see what he made. Hello and welcome back to Macro Meals. I'm Josh
01:01Cullen Bell and this week I'm going to be showing you how to make some of your guilty pleasures at
01:05home.
01:06Everyone loves a takeaway, that is no surprise to anyone, but they can get expensive and they can
01:11be full of saturated fat. So this week I'm going to be showing you how to make your very own
01:16chicken
01:17strips at home. So to start you want to take your chicken breasts and slice them into long strips.
01:24You can cut them smaller if you want and you'll get something more similar to chicken bites. Next you
01:29want to take these strips and dip them into one well beaten egg and this will allow for the coating
01:33to stick better. After dipping in your egg you want to take the strip and coat in flour mixed with
01:38a
01:39seasoning of your choice. There are many different ways you can coat your chicken for a different
01:43texture like with breadcrumbs. It all comes down to your own personal preference. Now fully deep
01:50frying chicken can use up a lot of oil which can get expensive so we're going to be shallow frying
01:55as not to waste as much. Using some tongs carefully place the strips into the oil making sure not to
02:01overcrowd and allowing them to stick together so you might need to cook the strips in batches. Cook for
02:07three and a half minutes on each side and then place onto a separate lined baking sheet so that we
02:12don't
02:12get loads of oil clinging onto the strips. The ingredients for this are on screen now and
02:19any nutritional information is available on the NHS website. And here are the chicken strips and I've
02:29quickly mixed up some sriracha mayo for a dipping sauce so let's give them a try.
02:41Yeah they are amazing and it's not something I would traditionally consider a healthy food but
02:46it is a great alternative if you're craving something that is non-processed. But that is all
02:51we have time for this week on Macro Meals. See you next time.
02:58Next there's more to student life than studying. It's also one of the best times for trying
03:02something out of your comfort zone. So Marcellus Almazar and Izzy Kenny went down to Canterbury
03:07Fight Club at Lifestyle Fitness Gym to have a jab at boxing in this week's We Try Out.
03:21Welcome to We Try Out where each week we try out new activity. I'm Izzy Kenny and my name is
03:26Marcellus
03:27Almazar and today we're here with Canterbury Fight Club at Lifestyle Fitness to give our best shot at
03:31boxing. But first let's find out a little bit more about it. Most of the people I coach they don't
03:36fight
03:36they're just doing it for enjoyment you know for fitness and and just as a way to kind of
03:41de-stress and and also feel empowered. I wanted to do something that would be empowering that would
03:47make me feel empowered as a woman and confident. I think you're just able to cope with things better.
03:53The stress relief obviously the physical benefits are huge. The mental benefits probably even outweigh
04:00the physical if I'm honest. But there are so many reasons and that's why I'm so passionate about
04:05getting people in to to try it out because you don't have to fight. Getting into this wasn't easy.
04:10I was the person in classes going the opposite direction to everyone else. I didn't know my left
04:17from my right. I was dyspraxic. I had learning difficulties. I struggled with coordinated
04:23movement and spatial awareness. I still do to an extent but this has helped me massively.
04:28So Marcellus what kind of things do we need for this activity? You're going to need a large open space,
04:32some pads and gloves and some comfortable clothing. Speaking of which let's get changed.
04:37Now we feel ready. To start off we learned how we should keep our stance with feet shoulder width
04:43apart and changing our stance according to left or right-handed preference and remembering to keep
04:47our gloves raised just beneath our chins. We were then given one-to-one training with Dee to jab our
04:52opponent or as you can see padding held by the other person. As it was non-contact we both felt
04:57really
04:58comfortable with boxing with training gear and had tons of fun sparring with each other.
05:04We learned the double jab and dodge as well as foot movements. Even for beginners like us we managed
05:09to quickly learn a new routine used by boxers in the ring. I had so much fun Izzy what about
05:15you?
05:16Honestly I had such a great time. How do you think we did? I think you did really well. Obviously
05:21the more
05:21you come back the more you're going to learn. It's only your first session so you've got to be
05:24comfortable with being uncomfortable at first. It all feels awkward because it's new to you.
05:29But the more you come back the more you're going to learn and in a few weeks time you'll look
05:33in
05:33the mirror and you won't recognise yourselves. And that was this week's We Try Out.
05:43Next up whether it be a small show on the park or a hike along the river we're here to
05:47show you the
05:47best places to rejuvenate around the county. So Daniel Ward took us down to a riverside path
05:52in Greenhithe in this week's Walking the Garden. Let's see how it went.
06:10When looking for a day away from the stresses of student life sometimes it takes going a bit
06:15further out to find what you need. A small train ride away from Medway and a stone's throw from
06:30Bluewater is a coastal path in Greenhithe village and is perhaps not what you would imagine for a
06:36relaxing day in the sun. But don't let the industrial surroundings fool you for there's a
06:42lot of sights to see along this small slice of nature. This walk is part of the wider recently
06:50named King Charles III coast path which spans an incredible 2700 miles across not just Kent but
06:58the entire country. While not fully complete just yet the finished trail will be the longest managed
07:03coastal path in the world. Our focus is on this peaceful four mile stretch of it along the river
07:12thames. Here a long winding path takes you from the village up to the dartford crossing. On the way
07:19you are treated to unfettered grassland, patches of dense shrubbery full of flora and of course the
07:25river thames itself which never fails to disappoint. Nestled between heights of urban industry there's
07:31a lot to do, see and find. This has been Daniel Ward, KMTV.
07:49And finally as the temperature continues to climb it's important to keep track of both your physical
07:54health and mental wellbeing. So in this week's student 101 support I'm here with James Connolly to speak
08:00about ways for students to stay healthy and safe in the summer heat.
08:11So what are some of the main symptoms that students should look out for if they are being negatively
08:15affected by the heat? Well according to the NHS some of the symptoms that students should be looking
08:21out for is increased tiredness and headaches as well as feeling nauseous or being sick themselves.
08:27There's also excessive sweating or potentially your skin starting to turn pale, faster breathing,
08:33increased heart rate as well as being very thirsty are all symptoms students should be looking out for.
08:38And how can students enjoy the sun while staying safe? Well it's really important to stay safe
08:43during the sunshine whilst you are enjoying it you know not spending too much time in the sunlight.
08:47You know moving to shadier places to stay a bit cooler you know wearing appropriate clothing that's
08:53you know loose breathable to get some air circulation flowing as well as making sure to stay hydrated
08:59throughout the day. You know drinking water plenty of water and even some electrolyte drinks can help
09:04throughout the day but making sure to limit your coffees as well as high sugar drinks as these can have
09:09a
09:10hydrating effect on the human body. Are there any misconceptions about heat waves?
09:16Yeah there so there are a few misconceptions according to gov.uk even healthier people can
09:21succumb to heat illnesses on even higher temperatures and even when doing strenuous activities and when
09:29it's hot outside a lot of people think that it's the best idea to open all of your windows to
09:33let in some
09:33fresh air but a lot of the times the air outside the building is a bit warmer so you risk
09:38just bringing in
09:39more and more of that warmer air and you won't really cool down that efficiently. Also you know
09:45to stop heat entering a lot of people think it's a good idea to use their curtains to cover their
09:49windows
09:50but these have an insulating effect on the indoors and it's much more recommended to use shutters or
09:55blinds to you know keep you cooler when you're indoors. And what other issues does a heat wave bring?
10:02Well not only is it extremely hot you know it's going to be much more sunnier you know these sunnier
10:07months
10:07there's more UV rays so more UV ray exposure means we're increasing the likelihood of getting sunburns
10:14or you know heat strokes or in sometimes worst cases skin cancer symptoms and the NHS recommend that
10:20everyone be using SPF especially a minimum of SPF 30 to protect themselves from UV rays especially
10:27four star UVA protection and to make sure to apply roughly six to eight teaspoons across your whole body
10:33and make sure it's a nice thick layer and not too thin as this can rub out or wear out
10:38throughout
10:38the day much quicker meaning you're not fully protected during the day. And finally are there
10:43any budget friendly tips that students can do to make this time a bit easier for them? Yeah absolutely so
10:51like I said staying hydrated throughout the day not just having lots of water at certain points of the day
10:56but making sure to stay regularly hydrated all throughout the day and you know sometimes it could be a good
11:01idea to
11:02cool down with some ice packs just wrap it in some tissue and just tap yourself with them
11:06also spray bottles of water can be nice to help you cool down during the really hot temperatures
11:11and making sure you have a fan on your hand to help circulate some of that airflow to you. Thank
11:16you so much James
