00:15Hello and welcome to Kent Student 101 live here on KMTV. I'm Jude Moulton and this is a program
00:21for students made by students. We've got so much in store for you from making healthy affordable
00:26meals and trying new things to showing you around the best trails in the county we've got it all here
00:32just for you. First this week as of June it's important to get out and get some fresh air
00:37whether it be a small stroll through the park or a hike through the hills we're here to be the
00:41best
00:42place to rejuvenate around the county. This week Daniel Ward took us to Milton Creek Country Park
00:48in Sittingbourne. Let's see how it went. When looking for a nice day away from studying
01:01sometimes the immediate surroundings aren't enough traveling slightly further afield may just be
01:07what's needed to truly relax. A small train ride away from Medway Milton Creek Country Park in
01:15Sittingbourne may not be a student's first choice for a relaxing day out given its distance but it
01:21is no less a beautiful site ripe for exploration. Now the site that would later become the country park
01:30has a surprisingly detailed history of use dating back to the Victorian era. Then the region was used
01:36for barge building and gravel extraction for brick making. These barges transported the bricks to London
01:43and returned with London's domestic waste to be burnt or buried at the site. Afterward the site would
01:49change hands several times over the centuries eventually ending up as a landfill site until 1973
01:55when the site was closed. That was until 2001 where a project to rejuvenate the site and create a rich
02:03green space to meet the needs of Sittingbourne's mainly urban population was started.
02:10And what a green space it is. The amount of biodiversity is truly remarkable. The park we see was originally
02:19small upon completion however it was expanded in 2008 to include the Saxon Shoreway which runs along
02:25Milton Creek linking the town centre to the country park. As you walk along the winding paths that snake
02:32through the park you are treated to many different landscapes. From trimmed grassland with neat rows of
02:38trees flanking either side and vast marshland with wonderful views
02:45to dense shrubbery and smaller delicate waterways. There is a lot to see do and find.
02:56This has been Daniel Ward, KMTV.
03:06Next up is Macro Meals where we show you ways of creating healthy meals. We all hate washing up and
03:12sometimes when you're going full out on a delicious dish you may end up with so many pots and pans
03:17at the
03:17end of the day. But this week James Connelly is here to show you that just because something is tasty
03:22it doesn't have to be complex with a one pan meal. Let's see what he made.
03:30Hello and welcome back to Macro Meals where we teach you how to make cheap and affordable meals.
03:35This week we'll be showing you how to make gluten free chicken for heaters. Let's get started.
03:41To make this sheet pan dish preheat your oven to 200 degrees. You'll want to wash and chop up your
03:47vegetables first. Make sure to cut them into julienne strips so that they can cook evenly when in the oven.
03:58You'll want to cut your chicken thighs thinly to ensure an even cook.
04:11Roughly chop your coriander and save half a later when garnishing.
04:15You can save time and money buying pre-made spice mixes at the supermarket.
04:21Another time saving tip, leave your chopped up ingredients on the baking sheet and season
04:25directly after. This can also help lower your clean up time in the kitchen.
04:29Once seasoned add in juice of one lime and a tablespoon of olive oil and mix.
04:35The spices used include a combination of cumin, chili powder, onion powder, garlic powder and smoked paprika.
04:42Place into the oven at 200 degrees for 20 minutes but make sure to keep an eye on it to
04:47avoid burning.
04:53Once finished, heat up your tortillas in the oven or microwave and combine.
05:12Now it's time for a taste test.
05:30It tastes really really good.
05:31To make this at home, here are your listed ingredients but feel free to increase or decrease the contents to
05:36your liking if you're trying to boost your protein intake or if you have any other dietary needs.
05:42Note, an adult serving would reduce this to around two to three fajitas, reducing overall caloric intake.
05:48This recipe is very student friendly and budget friendly and is perfect for meal prep.
05:53But that's all we have now for today. Thank you so much for watching.
05:59Next, there's more to student life than just studying and revising.
06:04This is the time to try something new and learn more about ourselves.
06:08So this week, Marcellus Almazar is rolling out of his comfort zone and stepping onto a skateboard
06:13for the first time in this week's We Try Out. Let's see if it's a smooth ride.
06:19One, two, three, go.
06:21We try out. We try out. We try out skateboarding.
06:28My name is Marcellus Almazar and today I'm with a skateboarding enthusiast to teach me how to skate.
06:33But first, let's find out a little bit more about skateboarding.
06:36Skateboarding found its following in California in the 1950s, but the skateboard itself has a very
06:41unknown origin. There are many theories on how the skateboard came to be, including a roller derby
06:46skate underneath a wooden crate. But Southern California made the clay wheels with a wooden
06:51board that has remained the same till this day. I spoke to Fatima Mirza to find out more.
06:55I've been skateboarding for about a year and a half. It's really fun. It's got a great community.
07:01Yeah, it's a great hobby. I think it's less fitness and more kind of resilience that it builds up
07:06because you fall over so many times. You have to like scrape your knees, scrape your elbows and then
07:11just get right back up. What better way to just hang out than just skating with your friends?
07:17So what kind of things do you need for this activity? A skateboard, some thin sole shoes,
07:22and some knee pads and a helmet if you're a beginner. Awesome! The activity is now seen on
07:28the daily basis as a fun hobby, a mode of transport and even seen in the Olympics. Most universities have
07:35student societies to meet people with the same hobby and there are even annual competitions to join
07:39all over the county. So here she's teaching me how to get on the board, teaching me how to balance.
07:44It was quite scary. I quite have really bad balance as you can see when I'm getting on the board.
07:49I'm quite shaky and I have to keep my arms out. Most skateboarders, you know, keep their arms down
07:53quite casually. I'm so scared! There I was really scared. I hate not having my feet on the ground. I
08:01was
08:01very much stepping outside of my comfort zone. She's teaching me how to kick off and move forward. I was
08:07struggling quite a bit to get my balance. It's much shakier than you think it is.
08:11Okay, and here's my final attempt at skating.
08:22So Fatima, how do you think I did? I think you did great, especially from the beginning.
08:25So do you think we could skate together sometime? Maybe with a little bit more practice.
08:30Well, thank you so much for today. So there we go. I think I did pretty well for someone who
08:33was
08:33pretty scared in the beginning. And that was this week's We Try Out. We Try Out.
08:42And finally, life at uni is as fun as it is short, and we as students are all aware of
08:47this bittersweet
08:48end. No one really talks about what life is going to look like after graduating and looking for your
08:53first job post-study. So in this week's Student 101 support, Josh Collinbell is here with me to speak
08:59about some tips and tricks when it comes to looking for jobs after university. So Josh,
09:04thank you so much for joining me today. So we're covering postgraduate life today,
09:08and how to begin that job search. What should students try to do after leaving university?
09:14So obviously it is really tough for students out there. From the Office of National Statistics,
09:19unemployment for youth, that being 16 to 24 year olds, is up to 16% as of the end of
09:262025.
09:27The first thing I would say is to get on those job search websites, that being LinkedIn, Total Jobs,
09:32Indeed. Get on those as quickly as you can. You're going to go in there and you've got to cast
09:38a broad
09:38net so none of those opportunities slip through the cracks. Next, I would say not only look outwards,
09:43but look inwards as well. Start building that profile. Have a nice clean picture that you can show
09:49people, have a nice banner, and also make sure you have a bio so you can tell them a little
09:53bit about
09:54yourself and then start putting some of those relevant skills and experiences on there.
09:58So you're talking about skills just then. How are students going to get those skills and experiences
10:02that you're just on about? So if you're not in university anymore and you're looking to still
10:06build up some of those extra skills, there are some things that you can do in your own time just
10:10to make sure, you know, that you're keeping up to date. One thing I would say, if you're in more
10:14of
10:14like a corporate setting, I would go for something like spreadsheets, you know, Google Docs and Excel.
10:21But if you're something in more of a creative industry, I would say go and build your portfolio,
10:27show your style, how versatile you can be, make yourself that much more appealing to employers.
10:32And a massive thing for the job search is networking. How can students go about networking
10:38themselves? So I would say get on social media as soon as you can. There are so many like-minded
10:44people,
10:44out there and they want to share all that information as they're in the same boat as you.
10:49You broaden those horizons and you'll never know who you're going to meet out there. And you know,
10:54you could meet someone who could lead you to your next future opportunity. So, you know,
10:57get out there and get involved with those groups. And we haven't got a lot of time left,
11:01but what are some things that people can gain confidence in interviews for? I would say go and
11:06find those jobs that you're not necessarily interested in and just, you know, start interacting with
11:11hiring managers. Maybe you don't want to go through with the job, but you'll get
11:14lots of opportunities and lots of experience and confidence with the interview process and
11:19preparing questions and things like that. Thank you so much for that, Josh. It's been
11:22an interesting conversation. And you've been watching Kent Student 101 live here on KMTV.
