00:15Hello and welcome to Kent Student 101 live here on KMTV. I'm Jude Moulton and
00:21this is a program for students made by students. We've got so much in store for
00:26you from making healthy affordable meals to showing you ways of how to
00:29make your space your own and answering any burning questions that students may
00:34have. We've got it all here just for you. First this week is Macro Meals where we
00:39show you ways of creating eating habits around your student life. An important
00:43thing to remember is that making a meal does not always have to be a solo
00:46activity and sometimes the best results can come from cooking with friends. So
00:50Leila Sparrow and Keris Hammond are here to show you exactly that. Let's see what
00:55they made. Hello and welcome back to Macro Meals. I'm Keris Hammond and I'm Leila Sparrow and
01:03today we're going to be making our own pizzas. It's a fun activity to do with
01:07your friends and everyone loves pizza. And you can add whatever toppings you want to
01:11using up your leftovers to catering for allergies. And to make it easier for
01:15ourselves we have bought pre-packaged pizza bases but it's all about the
01:18toppings. Right our hair is up and our hands are washed so let's get into it. We
01:25started by chopping up all of our ingredients to be the toppings on our
01:28pizza.
01:40The next step is to roll out our pastry. Our package came with a layer of baking
01:43paper underneath so it made it super easy to lay it out. You can reroll your dough to
01:48make it a deeper base or thin it out for a more crispy cook. I even decided to add
01:52layers of cheese strings inside the edge of my pizza to make a stuffed crust. Next up
01:57is your base. We use the mix of tomato paste and passata for one pizza and just
02:01barbecue sauce for the other. But you can add whatever you like. And of course we
02:05add the most important part of a pizza. The cheese. As it's your own pizza you can
02:09change it up for whatever you like. Maybe even plant-based for any allergies or vegans out
02:14there. Then finally we add our toppings. I did a little design with
02:17pepper to make our heart and added onion and jalapenos. I added pepperoni to mine
02:21which is completely customizable and you can put anything on there. Even pineapple
02:25if you're feeling wild. Then we put them in the oven for around 12 minutes or until
02:29the cheese and crust has gone all crispy and delicious. We can then take out the
02:33pizzas and cut them up to enjoy.
02:49So here we have it. A delicious homemade pizza. Cheers!
02:58That's really yummy. It's very delicious. Let's watch a film and enjoy the rest.
03:07Next is this week's Digital Gems where we spotlight some series filmed and produced
03:12right here in Kent. This week we are joined by Josh Colombell here to speak to me about
03:16a comedy drama series he has recently watched. So Josh, thank you so much for joining me.
03:22Can you tell me the Digital Gem you have found this week?
03:24So this week I took a look at The Larkins. It is a fresh adaptation of the classic novel
03:30The Darling Buds of May by H.E. Bates and it follows the iconic Larkin family in the Kent
03:36countryside. It is set in the 1950s with Pop and Ma Larkin along with their six kids living
03:43a carefree rural lifestyle. The comedy drama is a TV series for all ages and it shows the
03:49chaotic and comfy life of the Larkins for a nice feel good watch.
03:54Thank you so much for that. And what are your thoughts on the series? Who would you recommend it to?
03:59So I feel like it's something more wholesome with that classic British humour and if that's the
04:05sort of thing you like this is definitely the series for you. There's a storyline for everyone
04:10in the family from the naive Primrose finding her first crush to the independent Marriott debating
04:16whether to leave the village and start a new life or even just Ma and Pop trying to enjoy a
04:22beach
04:22holiday in Margate. There is a little bit of something for everyone. I'm sure many people have heard of
04:27the classic novel and maybe even the series from the early 1990s although I doubt a lot of students
04:33were alive during that time so they might have missed out on that one. The family like to stick
04:39to their strong sense of morals looking after one another with Ma and Pop helping plenty of strangers
04:45throughout the series giving us a window into the kind-hearted nature of the family. This is most
04:52evident when they're clashing with their rival family the Normans. They are you know very wealthy
04:58and they care a lot more about status. With the Larkins they're the polar opposite of that and doing
05:03everything they can to help the average person. We don't have a lot of time left but can you tell
05:07me a little bit of trivia just a tiny bit. As said before it takes place in Kent and it
05:12uses a lot of
05:13spaces from the Garden of England like West Peckham, Irinsford and Under River for their village scenes
05:17and there's also iconic Kent landmarks such as the Seaside, Wildpool Bay Hotel in Margate,
05:24Tunbridge Castle and Broadstairs Viking Bay. Thank you so much for joining me today Josh.
05:32Next up is this week's KMTV Quiz where we spotlight many ways students decorate their living spaces
05:37and why. One of the most important parts of the student experience is your room, be it campus
05:42accommodation or rented shared housing. Your space can be an escape from student life. So this week we
05:49visit Vanessa Milado, a forensic science student at the University of Kent to see how they carved out
05:54their own slice of home. Let's take a look.
06:07Hi I'm Vanessa Milado, I'm a third year forensic science student. Let me show you around my crib.
06:14Pink is my favorite color which is why you can see it all around my room.
06:20So this is where I study, I also do my skin hair here, I eat here and I also like
06:25to relax here as
06:26well. So I've made it so that it's always clean and empty so I can sprawl out all of my
06:30work and
06:30I've got a lot of pens and colorful things to keep me motivated. Since I'm a third year student there's
06:35a lot of work to do especially with the new timetable. Whenever I'm not dancing I am usually
06:40doing coursework. Compared to first year I now consider what I can carry in the car as well because in
06:46first year I just brought whatever made me feel safe. Up here I've got a couple of certificates
06:50from the kpop dance society. I've kept them on display so we can show off all of our hard work.
06:55I keep this calendar because I have a lot of performances, we have a lot of kpop stuff to do
06:59and our showcase and all of our rehearsals and it reminds me of everything I need to do. This is
07:03my bed
07:03and I've brought a couple of plushies from home. This is only a few but these are my favorite ones
07:07because I got them as gifts from my parents. This one I've had since I was a baby and this
07:12is a gift
07:12from my best friend as well. I also like to read and journal here. It helps me wind down from
07:16the
07:17really busy days that I have. This is where I do my makeup. I like to do it here because
07:20I get the sun
07:21in so that's the best lighting. I have a little shrine of all of my friends and these are some
07:26really fun memories that I've made. Most of these are actually memories from uni. The reason that I've
07:31done all of this to my room is because I'm away from home. I used to feel really homesick and
07:35I found
07:36that decorating it kind of similar to my home to my room at home has made me feel happier here
07:41as
07:42well. Come take a look at my closet. Okay so these are all the clothes that I bring to uni.
07:47I
07:47unfortunately could not bring everything because I have to be a little bit more space cautious.
07:51I bring my clothes termly so when it's winter term I change so that I have all my winter clothes
07:56here.
07:56For my course I do a lot of lab work so I keep my items here to get me ready
08:00for class.
08:00Let's see what I look like going to class. This is what I look like when I have long lab
08:05days.
08:05The advice that I have for people who are decorating their room is to bring white tack and be gentle
08:10with the walls and bring anything that reminds you of home. Thanks for coming to my room,
08:14this has been this week's KMTV Cribs. Bye!
08:27And finally, we all know that sometimes student life can be a struggle and that's okay. Whether
08:32it's deadlines, coursework or study material, there's a lot to deal with. So in this week's
08:38student 101 support, James Colony is here to speak to me about some help that students can get through
08:42academic advisors. So James, thank you so much for joining me today. What academic support can
08:48students get from their academic advisors? Yeah, so all university students are given
08:53academic advisors at the start of their degrees and they're there to sort of answer any questions
08:58about the course that you may have and they're also there to support a student who might be struggling
09:03with engaging any of the taught content. The advisor is normally a member of faculty and within your
09:09department of degree and so they've got loads and loads of experience with this sort of stuff
09:13and they're definitely trustworthy sources of information. And sometimes students may feel
09:18like they're imposing if they consistently email their academic advisors. When would be the right
09:23time for you to get a meeting with your academic advisor or get some advice from them?
09:29Yeah, so it's important for all students to build a healthy relationship with their advisor early on.
09:34It will help to know the structure of each semester throughout the course. It's also very important
09:40for struggling students to reach out to advisors before things get too overwhelming,
09:46especially with exam seasons and end of course deadlines approaching near the end of the year.
09:51It can make a big difference with tackling any fast approaching academic concerns on revision,
09:57perhaps, as well as any outside responsibilities that are impacting your ability to study.
10:02And you touched on exam deadlines and coursework deadlines. Can you give me some examples of
10:08how students can prepare for those? Yeah, so some examples I've used while studying as a student are
10:13making planners that are easy to follow, as well as setting digital reminders on calendars so they're
10:18easy to get in touch with. Also students can break down bigger chunks of work into smaller chunks of work
10:25that may seem a bit more easy to complete and more feasible to complete in a smaller amount of time,
10:31as well as setting realistic goal posts for what work can be completed first.
10:35And what advice would you give to students with that bit of exam stress or deadline stress that they're going
10:40to have at university?
10:42Some advice I'd give to students is to not overwork yourself. Studying for exams or completing coursework is important,
10:48but you can only do so well if you make yourself take breaks in between. This could be, you know,
10:54with academic advisor meetings or getting in touch with other course mates that are going through the same thing.
10:59Or sometimes it's just good to take some time off and spend time with your friends,
11:02make sure you're making enough memories at university that are worthwhile.
11:06Thank you so much for joining me. That's been really informational. Thank you.
