00:15Hello and welcome to Kent Student 101 live on KMTV. I'm Jude Moulton and this is a program for
00:22students made by students. We have so much in store for you from exploring a wonderful county,
00:27to do-it-yourself solutions, and learning how to make quick healthy meals. But first up this
00:34week's We Try Out comes back with a swish. Student life is all about trying something new for the
00:38first time. So this week Keris Hammond and Marcelo Almazar took it to the court to become the best
00:44basketball players they can be. Let's see if it's a slam dunk.
00:51We try out, we try out, we try out basketball. Welcome to We Try Out where every week we try
01:01out a new activity.
01:02My name is Keris Hammond and my name is Marcelo Almazar and today we're here with Medway Basketball to find
01:07out the rules of the game. But first let's learn a little bit more about basketball. Basketball was
01:12invented by Dr. James Neismith while teaching a class at Springfield College in Massachusetts. It
01:18was during the winter of 1891 he looked at his restless students and decided to create the indoor
01:23activity for the cold New England winters. We spoke to Rebecca, the president of the society, to find out
01:28more about it. I go into basketball because I have a lot of family members who play basketball and
01:33everyone's really tall so I kind of just followed my older cousins and my siblings. Yeah I would
01:38definitely recommend the sport and the team. The team is like a little family. You get to stay active.
01:43It's also a good way to interact with people because a lot of people come to university and they can
01:48find it lonely so it's a good space to meet and interact with other people. It's not really about
01:52skill, I think it's more about the attributes of the person and what you bring to the team. So support,
01:58love, encouragement. So Keris, what kind of things do we need for this activity?
02:02Do you need some comfortable gloves, a ball and a hoop and a basketball court if you can find one?
02:07And don't forget some squeaky shoes. We began the session how they usually do with stretching.
02:19How are you feeling Marcelence? I'm feeling energetic so I think I can beat you. Bring it on.
02:25And now we're putting our skills to the test with a basketball game of our own with the team. Let's
02:30see how we do.
02:55So that was so much fun. How do you think we did? You guys did really good for your first
02:59time.
02:59Yeah, it started slow but you got there, yeah. And do you think that we could make it onto your
03:04team?
03:05A few more sessions. We have weekly sessions on Tuesdays, so for more practice you guys, you guys really improved
03:11it.
03:11You know what, Unexpectedly I really enjoyed this. What about you Keris?
03:14I had a lot of fun but I'm very tired. You need a lot of stamina to play this, honestly.
03:18But I think we did well for our first try. We did get better.
03:21And that was this week's We Try Out. We try out.
03:29We know that moving into your own place can feel super daunting.
03:33How would you make your room truly feel like your home without breaking the bank?
03:37How can you spruce up the place without remodeling the whole room?
03:40Well, Nicole Stewart Cupidon is here to answer some of those questions and more in this week's How to Adult.
03:51This week we're looking at how to make your home away from home really stand out.
03:56Offering up some tips and tricks to decorate your room without breaking the bank.
03:59There are likely restrictions as what you can add or remove from your room.
04:04But this depends on your university. So please check what they advise before making any kind of modifications.
04:11For decorating your room you might want to find things like blue tack and command strips.
04:17They're easy to remove at the end of your tenancy. And they're pretty easy to find in all sorts of
04:22places
04:23from corner shops to supermarket chains. You want to be careful not to leave your room in a state
04:27because you don't want to be fined at the end of the year.
04:30Now when it comes to cheap decor your best bet is a secondhand shop.
04:35Thrifting is getting more and more popular and for good reason.
04:38Getting items secondhand is not only great for your budget but also great at sustainability
04:43as it reduces the amount of unwanted items in landfill.
04:47Looking around it's just incredible. I mean I can see China galore, there's a bunch of mugs,
04:56there's a couple of really cute dolls and there's like a bunch of books.
05:00And looking behind me there are a large amount of games, board games that you can play with some
05:06of your housemates which would be a great way to bond with people especially if you're moving to
05:11university for the first time. There's also a bunch of art as well so if you really want to get
05:16something secondhand and put it on your walls this is the best place to do it.
05:22But for inspiration your best bet are social media apps like TikTok or Pinterest which are a great
05:28way to start thinking of what you want to add. Maybe you want to go for having bright colours
05:34or keep it simple with some vinyls. Alternatively you can cover your entire shelf with trinkets
05:40or just keep it really really simple. A couple of family photos with picture of your dog. Your room
05:47is a reflection of yourself so make it a space that you want to be in.
05:56Next up is Macro Meals where we show you ways of creating healthy meals without emptying your pocket.
06:02A common worry for students is that nutritious meals simply take too much time. So Daniel Ward is here to
06:09show you that is not the case with an affordable delicious and quick recipe for you this week.
06:14Let's see what he made.
06:19Today we're going to be looking at a meal that can be cooked quickly so if you're in a rush
06:23this is
06:23the meal for you. Today we're cooking egg fried rice with salmon. The meal we're making today is
06:30enough for two portions so keep that in mind. Start by boiling water in the kettle and wash 150 grams
06:37of rice.
06:40Once the water is boiling add your rice to the pan. It will take roughly 10 to 15 minutes on
06:46the medium
06:46heat but make sure to check on it regularly. Whilst the rice is cooking fry two pieces of salmon.
06:52Set the hob to medium heat and add some butter to the pan. Once it's heated place the salmon into
06:59the pan.
07:10Make sure to turn the salmon regularly so it cooks evenly. This will take roughly 10 minutes to cook
07:16and should look pink in the centre once it's done. When your salmon is ready put it to one side.
07:25By this point your rice should be almost done. When done drain in the excess water and put it to
07:29the side as well.
07:32Then crack two eggs into a mug and whisk. We used one egg per portion but feel free to use
07:38more if you
07:39want more protein. Using the same pan add extra butter if needed before adding the egg and scrambling it.
07:48Once it is half cooked add the rice from before to the pan and mix.
07:55Then add a tablespoon of dark soy sauce. For extra flavour I've also added some mixed herbs,
08:02pepper and garlic granules. Finally add some frozen peas and mix thoroughly.
08:13Once the peas are cooked you're done. Serve with salmon and enjoy.
08:20And here we have the final product. Let's see how it tastes.
08:30Yeah it's actually delicious. And if you want to make this at home the ingredients are on screen now.
08:36In just one of these portions there is 53 grams of protein, 72 grams of carbs and 25 grams of
08:42fat.
08:43And that's all from me on Macro Males.
08:49Now something many forget is that there's more to student life than just studying.
08:54Which is important, which is why it's important to take a break.
08:57Whether it be a small show in the park or a hike through the hills.
09:00We'll show you many of the sights to see in Kent.
09:03This week Josh Colombell took us through Canterbury where students in Canterbury
09:07can have a well-deserved break. Let's look at where he went.
09:19If you're looking for one of the most serene and picturesque spots in Kent,
09:23Westgate Gardens in Canterbury is the perfect place to begin.
09:27Set along both banks of the river store with beautiful lawns and riverside paths
09:32that take their name from the medieval Westgate towers, which overlook the park
09:35and is a stunning landmark to behold. But what makes Westgate Gardens truly special
09:41is the way nature and history come together so effortlessly.
09:48As you stroll beside the river store, it's hard to imagine that much of this peaceful landscape
09:53was once submerged beneath the water right alongside the Roman city wall.
09:57This was once the western entrance to Roman Canterbury, marking the start of Watling Street,
10:02the great road leading all the way to London.
10:05The Williamson's gifted the house and gardens to the people of Canterbury, ensuring it would remain
10:10a public space forever. Catherine Williamson herself went on to become Canterbury's first woman mayor,
10:16and she helped shape the gardens into the riverside park we enjoy today.
10:20As you wander, there's so much to notice. A plaque marks the site of the old Roman London gate.
10:26A charming 17th century brick cottage stands on the site of a medieval mill. A 25-foot oriental plane
10:34tree, possibly 200 years old, spreading its branches over the lawns. The garden is scattered
10:39with numerous pieces of deep history, complemented by many different creatures for any animal lovers.
10:47Following along the river, you are led to Hanbrook Marsh, which itself has a number of great sights
10:52and open landscapes to explore, such as the views from the defunct Harbledown Junction. The vast
10:58greenery is a pleasant breath of fresh air that makes exploring Westgate Gardens all the more worthwhile.
11:05In a city famous for its cathedral and medieval streets, Westgate Gardens offers something just
11:10as memorable. Space to breathe, reflect and connect with Canterbury's story in the most relaxing way possible.
