00:15Hello and welcome to Kent Student 101, live here on KMTV. I'm Jude Moulton and this is a program
00:22for students, made by students. We've got so much in store for you, from making healthy, affordable
00:28meals and spotlighting degrees, just showing you the cutting edge of creativity from across
00:33the county. We've got it all here, just for you. First this week is Macro Meals, where
00:39we show you ways of creating healthier eating habits. A common view is that vegan meals,
00:44although healthy, are not very flavourful. So Leila Sparrow and Keris Hammond are here
00:49to show you that nutritious vegan meal can be made without sacrificing taste. Let's see
00:55what they made. Hello and welcome back to Macro Meals. I'm Keris Hammond. And I'm Leila Sparrow
01:03and today we'll be making our own stir fry. We're using tofu as our protein, but you can
01:08change it for any meat or even just vegetables. We've chosen this meal because it's really
01:12quick and simple to make and a great way to get in loads of vegetables. You can also buy
01:16the pre-packaged deals from supermarkets, which include the noodles, the sauce and the vegetables.
01:21But today we're going to be making ours from scratch to show you how easy it is to use
01:26up all your leftover veg. Our hair is up and our hands are washed, so let's get started.
01:31To begin the meal, we start by chopping all our ingredients. We have a red onion, bell peppers
01:36and mushrooms, which we chopped into rough thin strips. Then for the carrot, we decided to
01:41use a grater to get thin slices. So it should cook evenly, but you can grate it or chop it
01:46by hand.
01:48Once you're finished chopping your ingredients, we start with coating the biggest pan you can
01:52find in oil and letting it heat up. You want the heat to be quite high during the whole process,
01:57so keep the hob on medium to high. We cut our tofu into strips, but they often broke apart,
02:02so to keep them from burning, you can try cooking it slower prior to the stir fry or cut into
02:06cubes to
02:07make it harder to break. We had ours in for around five minutes before adding the other ingredients,
02:11but as soon as it looks crispy, the others are good to put in. Following that, we add the vegetables
02:18and keep them moving for around 10 minutes as the heat should be high enough to burn them if they're
02:23not moving. Next will be the noodles. We bought ready to add noodles, but this can be changed for
02:27any type, so make sure to follow the instructions on the packet. We left the noodles to soften and cook
02:33for a further two to three minutes as the instructions told us. Finally, add your sauce. We used a garlic
02:38sweet
02:39chilli packet, but make sure to look at your options to be sure they are vegan or vegetarian friendly
02:43if that's what you want. Once the sauce is in the pan, heat it up while mixing it to cover
02:47all of your
02:47ingredients. Now dish up and enjoy. You can easily bulk make this to reheat for meal prep too.
02:58It was quite a messy one to make, but it was very easy and quite simple. Well, should we give
03:02it a try?
03:03Let's do it. That is very flavourful. I very much enjoyed. It tastes so fresh and healthy as well.
03:13And that is the end of this week's Macro Meals.
03:20Next up is this week's Created by Kent, where we spoke with Inno, a Biomed student at the University of
03:26Kent who owns a crocheting and art business called Innovative Arts. Our reporter Marces Almazar
03:32sat down with her earlier in the studio and they talked about how she got her start in crocheting
03:37and what her business looks like today. Let's take a look at that.
03:47Hello and welcome to Created by Kent. Today I'm joined by Inno to talk about her crocheting and art
03:52business, Innovative Arts. So tell me a little bit about what you do, Inno. Okay, hi guys. I make
04:00specifically crochet pieces and I knit. I also do art pieces and polymer clay jewellery. So how did you
04:07get your start in doing all of these pieces? So I found these cute little old ladies that were able
04:12to teach me how to knit and then from that I learned how to crochet. I learned how to crochet
04:17in sixth form
04:18specifically to help with like charity pieces. So some of these pieces I've made for are for different
04:24events like these are for like markets to sell, runways like these ties and this hat as well.
04:32I made it for a specific runway, the last runway I had. What drew you to crocheting specifically?
04:37Specifically because it was it was cheap. You don't need to, all you need is a truly a ball of
04:42yarn
04:42and a hook. Like I could do it on the go. I could just pick it up whenever so it
04:48never stressed me out to
04:49actually invest into it. So you you've made um pieces for so many different people. How did it
04:55feel getting your pieces sent to New York Fashion Week? Tell me a bit about the process and how it
04:59felt. That was, that made me so giddy and it was it was literally just a simple thing of putting
05:04myself
05:04out there and actually reaching out. It's because when it was my Instagram, my business Instagram had
05:08like like almost not even a hundred followers. I had like um almost 50 something and I reached out
05:16to one of my favorite creators Carlita Landrum and I was like I've made I've made quite a few things
05:21and would you be interested in me making something for you and um like having you showcase that on
05:27your own platform and she was like yeah I'm so down with that. So I made her a spider top
05:31but then I also
05:31made her a cute little satin bag because I like I got into crocheting with satin and ribbon and it
05:37was
05:37inspired by one of her um outfits that she's done in her um in her platform and then she took
05:44that
05:44bag and she created an outfit around that for New York Fashion Week and then next thing I know she's
05:48she's wearing it there she's showcasing it there and then I'm getting tagged and stuff and a bunch
05:52of people coming towards me and I'm like oh my gosh this is this is so amazing like I literally
05:56um
05:57felt I felt so giddy like like a little girl realizing her dreams truly. Awesome well thank you so much
06:03for coming in today you know I've been eyeing this piece since the beginning and it matches your
06:07outfits. Well thank you so much for speaking to us today. I'm so happy to be thank you for having
06:12me.
06:16Next we have degree of the week which looks at a degree that you might have not ever considered
06:22before. This week James Connolly spoke with Daisy Page and found out how the course that she completed
06:27on her undergraduate degree in wildlife conservation and how she now uses it in her personal and
06:33professional life. Let's see what he found out. My favorite thing to study when I was studying wildlife
06:44conservation was about animal behavior it's really interesting so different things about animal can
06:50change like coloration behaviors all to do with different times of the year food resources and
06:56competition I found that really interesting but also how humans react to animals as well. So for my
07:02dissertation I studied two European brown bears they came from canned hunting facilities and was brought
07:08to a local zoo here in Kent so for that I had to look at their behavior every minute and
07:14whether that's
07:14a natural behavior such as foraging or unnatural behavior such as pacing. Following the completion of
07:20her degree Daisy now works in the media industry but how has her course informed her work skills now?
07:25I still film and do photography for wildlife and I try and enter as many photography competitions as
07:33I can and I'm constantly talking about animals as well but inside work even though I'm studying
07:37journalism now I use that to kind of tell stories in nature and educate people as well. For nature lovers
07:44out there that want to pursue this course what advice does she have for prospective students? I think if
07:50you're wanting to study anything related to animals the best thing I would do is just basically go out
07:55into nature and learn about it because there is so much to learn whether that's different leaf types
08:00different trees how the river flows what lives in the river there's so much to do with nature and
08:05everything kind of relates back to nature. There might be some misconceptions people could have about
08:10the degree let's see how different it was for Daisy's expectations. My degree when I was studying it
08:16obviously it was a little while ago now so it might have changed but when I was there it was
08:20a lot more
08:20writing and reading than I expected but it's actually a very scientific course it's not just
08:27about being out in the wild and learning about the environment which you do do you go out on bat
08:31surveys and looking at plants and signs of wildlife and life around you but it's also a lot of reading
08:38looking at research which has already been done. As of the 2023 academic year over 65 students enrolled for
08:45this degree at Kent. Data from CCU suggests that 80% of graduates are in work or further education after
08:51taking the course at university. Students of Kent are global leaders in wildlife training and study
08:56with over 1,600 former students now working in conservation across the world. This has been
09:01James Connolly for degree of the week.
09:08And finally student life is more than just studying and exams in fact one of the biggest parts of the
09:13university experience is the social aspect but many struggle on actually where to start. So in this
09:19week's student one-on-one support Izzy Kenny is here to speak to me about some of the social options
09:24for those who might not know where to start growing their social circle. So Izzy thank you so much for
09:29joining me today. What can students do to break their kind of social barrier? Yeah so adjusting to university
09:36can be a really overwhelming experience I think and so first of all don't worry about it. Everyone goes at
09:42their
09:42own pace but I think starting with your housemates your flatmates is a great place to start. These are
09:48the people that you're going to be living with for a year so kind of maybe leave your door open
09:52whilst
09:52you're moving in then you can say hi to everybody. Also in Freshers Week go to the Freshers Week events
09:58you can go to the Freshers Fair and talk to societies joining a club or society is a great way
10:04to meet
10:04people and also on your course if your course is doing any introductory events make sure to go along
10:11to those and you'll meet people in your projects in your lectures seminars and that can be a lot of
10:16people who have like similar interests to you as well. That's amazing but with the drinking culture
10:21around the university that we see what can someone do if they don't like to drink how can they still
10:25get
10:26involved with that kind of lifestyle? Yeah I think it's a very common misconception that university social
10:32life completely revolves around drinking but it doesn't and I think you need to remember that you
10:36can also go out to clubs and bars and be sober and that's okay and you can still have a
10:40great time
10:41but if you don't want to be around that kind of environment there's also so much going on like
10:45clubs and societies they're always doing activities that obviously don't involve drinking
10:51yeah I think joining joining those and be don't be scared to go for something that you've never done
10:56before so many people will join a sport that they've never done in their life and they really enjoy it
11:01now we don't have a lot of time left but what advice would you give some more experienced students
11:04at university? I think don't be too worried if your first year didn't go completely how you expected
11:10it to go um pressures week is still applicable to all years of university so yeah just get yourself out
11:16there thank you so much for joining me today Izzy
