00:16Hello and welcome to Kent Student 101 live here on KMTV. I'm Julia Dweemore. This is a program
00:22for students made by students. We've got so much in store for you, from making healthy affordable
00:26meals to trying out new things and answering any burning questions students may have, we've got
00:31it all here just for you. First this week is Macro Meals where we show you ways of creating better
00:36eating habits around student life. Now we all know about prepping for exams but how about prepping
00:41for meals? Whether you're in a rush or simply want an efficient meal, Jude Moulton is here to show you
00:46how a little bit of preparation can go a long way. Welcome to this week's Macro Meals where I show
00:52you
00:53ways of creating healthy eating habits that can fit in your student lifestyle. Now we've all been
00:58there, a 9am lecture and you don't have time to make a healthy breakfast to start your day. Well
01:03I'm here to show you that in just 10 minutes of preparation the night before we can make a nice
01:07and affordable healthy breakfast. I'm here to show you how to make a cookies and cream overnight oats.
01:14Let's get started. First gather your ingredients, only six are needed for this recipe.
01:21Put 60 grams of rolled oats in a bowl or container, followed by 180 grams of no fat greek yogurt,
01:29then only 20 grams of light cream cheese. Add 65 millilitres of milk, any milk is fine,
01:39I've used semi skimmed here. Mix it all together. Then add a vanilla protein powder,
01:45you can get this from any local store and give it another mix. Then add a crushed up biscuit,
01:53preferably one with cream but any will be good. Mix again, then add another crushed up biscuit as a
02:00topping. Put this in the fridge overnight or for at least six hours and you'll have a tasty breakfast in
02:07the morning. And here is the final product. Let's give it a little bit of a taste test.
02:14Now this breakfast only has 515 calories with 40 grams of protein, 60 grams of carbs and only 18
02:21grams of fat. And you can find all this information on NHS website. Wow that's a really nice and healthy
02:29way to start your day, especially if you have a lot to do on the go. But that's all we
02:33have time for
02:34in this week's Macromills.
02:40Next, there's more to student life than studying. It's also one of the best times for trying
02:44something out of your comfort zone. With the rise of online podcasting there's also been a resurgence
02:49in radio broadcasting. So James Connolly and Izzy Kenny went down to Canterbury Student Radio to see
02:54if they have what it takes in this week's We Try Out. One, two, three, go.
02:59We try out, we try out, we try out radio hosting. Hi and welcome to this week's We Try Out
03:08where we
03:08try out a new activity each week. I'm James Connolly and I'm Izzy Kenny and we're going to be speaking
03:13to the president of the Radio Society here at the University of Kent. Let's go have a look.
03:18I've kind of always loved to talk ever since I was young. It's kind of a thing I get from
03:22my dad
03:23and so I thought oh radio would be such a fun thing to get into at uni. We do a
03:27range of stuff
03:28so we've got kind of like normal radio shows, drive-timey ones that I do, we've got specific
03:33indie rock ones, we've got specific musical theatre ones, we've got a couple of kind of like
03:38experiential ones where people do a different theme every week. I mean I can show you all our
03:43broadcasting equipment if you'd like.
03:47Student Radio goes back decades in Canterbury with both universities of Kent
03:51and Canterbury Christchurch work in different stations. Whilst the studio is located on the
03:57UKC campus, both universities can volunteer to take part in building their own programs for the
04:02station. This can be either live segments or pre-recorded shows and podcasts that can be
04:07shared on their website and radio. For Christchurch undergrads you'll need to give a heads up before
04:11joining. First thing I'd recommend doing is stick on those headphones. Right. Just because you'll want to be
04:16able to hear what's going in to the mic from your voice but also the music play out system so
04:21stick
04:21them on. Awesome. The fader to your left that will control the microphone volume so if you just want
04:26to whack that up and just practice speaking to the mic see if you can hear yourself now. Hello,
04:30hello, testing, testing. If you just press play you should be able to hear it hopefully.
04:46That was amazing. So what advice would you have for somebody who's a little bit radio shy?
04:52Um I think I would just say have fun, enjoy yourself, you don't need to take it too seriously.
04:57Now it's time for me and James to have a try. Hello and welcome to Kent Student 101 Radio live
05:05for the first time. I'm James Connolly and I'm joined with Izzy Kenny and we're going to be bringing
05:10you all of the hot hits from around the county. Stay tuned. That's all the time we have for now.
05:21Thank you so much for listening. And for watching. We try out.
05:28Next is Created by Kent which highlights local artists and the work that they make right here in
05:32Kent. Marcelus Almazal went down to Canterbury to interview the Brothers Beulah, a brother duo
05:38musical actor, to have a chat about their experience as an indie band since graduating university.
05:49Hiya, welcome back to Created by Kent. My name is Marcelus Almazar and today I'm with two former
05:55Kent graduates who are now in a band. Let's find out more about them.
05:58Well I've known Toby for 22 years since he was born and at some point in those 23, 22 years
06:09we
06:10decided to play music together. From Jackson 5 to Oasis, bands composed of family members have
06:17been popular for ages. Let's find out what inspires their music. We've done like a whole load of stuff
06:22to do with children's TV themes and sitcoms from the 70s. It's kind of about taking something that
06:30people know and then really ruining it. And we've got another album that we're writing at the moment
06:36and I think that's going to be the first sort of more formal like go into a studio or go
06:43into some
06:43different studios. Probably a different shade. There are so many different types of performance out there
06:48from small stages to large arenas. They told us struggles that they faced moving from venue to
06:54venue. I think we've always kind of struggled with gigs where we're on a stage and they're like the
07:02audience. Yeah we don't really like that because I like it on a kind of level floor because then it's
07:07kind of a bit more like personable. Yeah. As a band has played all over Kent from Dartford to Dover,
07:13they tell us some advice that they have for local Kent artists. The community is like increasing is
07:20like quite small. Yeah. So you need to just talk to anyone. Yeah. Anyone that you think could be
07:27potentially useful. If you're playing like electronic music there's go to Whitstable and there's stuff
07:33happening. If you want to play post-punk music I guess go to Thanet and there's stuff happening. Or Medway
07:40actually there's some good stuff happening in Medway. Thank you for having us on this week's Created
07:47Bye. Kent. Bye.
08:02And finally with the stresses of day-to-day student life it can be easy to lose track of your
08:07physical
08:07well-being. But this doesn't mean that it's any less important. So in this week's Student 101 Josh
08:12Colin Bell is here to speak with me about some of the ways to keep on top of your health.
08:17So thanks
08:18for joining me here today. Why is physical exercise important? So coming from the NHS website regardless
08:25of age there is strong scientific evidence that physical activity can help lead a happier and
08:32healthier life. Physical exercise can reduce risk in several illnesses such as coronary heart disease,
08:37stroke, type 2 diabetes and cancer. Not only can it reduce the risk of illness but also boost positive
08:43aspects of your life such as self-esteem, mood, sleep quality, energy and stress levels. As for how
08:49much exercise is required to improve your health the gov.uk website recommends that adults should try to be
08:55active every day but aim for around 150 minutes of exercise a week. And where's a good place to start
09:03if
09:03you want to improve your physical health? So I would say start small and build yourself up. It should
09:10be something that can be easily implemented into your life if you make sort of huge drastic changes to your
09:15routine it's going to be a lot harder to maintain. For the average person the easiest way to get more
09:21active is to implement it into your everyday life by walking or cycling for short journeys and any sort of
09:29activity that can raise your heart rate makes you breathe heavier and makes you feel warmer and
09:34that will count as a moderate exercise. A good way to tell is if you can still talk but you
09:39couldn't
09:39sing any song lyrics. Another good starting point is by having a friend who can help you know they can
09:46help you with exercise routines or with meal plans and they can be a good source of motivation and
09:51inspiration. They can also support you if things get you know get a bit tougher and they can really help
09:56motivate you through those darker times if you are really struggling to maintain it. And having
10:00a familiar face can help alleviate some of the pressure when being in a new environment that
10:05you're not familiar with. Are there any benefits students can take advantage of to help better
10:10their health? So a lot of places will offer day passes if the gym is not a place you're familiar
10:16with
10:17and you sort of want to get to grips with it first then you can get these day passes which
10:20are a lot
10:21lower in price so you know fill your way through and see if it's the thing for you. Many places
10:26also
10:26offer student discounts for your monthly gym membership so if you are ready to fully commit
10:31you can get a smaller price and you should really take advantage of that whilst you're studying.
10:36For university students many places offer benefits on campus that coincide with a student budget for
10:42UKC and CCCU students they offer a free membership to first year students and to anyone living on campus
10:48on campus accommodations. And where's a good place to find information about fitness?
10:54So a good place for your own personal health is always your GP you know they are medical experts
10:59and they'll know what is best for you but if you're wanting something that's a little bit less serious
11:04you're just trying to do a bit of research then the NHS website is always a great resource for
11:08reliable information. Thank you for joining me here today. You've been watching Kent Student 101 live on KMTV.
