00:15Hello and welcome to Kent Student 101 live on KMTV. I'm Julia Dwimor. This is a program for
00:22students made by students. We've got so much in store for you from exploring our wonderful county
00:27to do-it-yourself solutions and learning how to make a quick healthy meal. First up in this week's
00:33Created by Kent, James Connolly caught up with Candy Dowson, a student choreographer who formed
00:39the University of Kent Society UKC Street Dance. This past weekend the group not only competed in
00:45but took home first prize in the nationwide street dancing competition called Go Big or Go Home.
00:51James sat down with her earlier in the studio to talk about the lead up to the team's performance.
00:56Let's take a look.
01:20So what we just saw there was rehearsal of the winning choreography at Go Hard or Go Home.
01:25So we're now, we're sat with a team choreographer and captain, Candy Dowson. So could you tell us a
01:31little bit more about what it was like when you heard your team name?
01:34Yeah, it was really, it was quite emotional. I think we practiced a lot and really, really hard
01:41and it took us, it was a lot of, there were a lot of issues but you know it ended
01:47up being worth it in
01:48the end and I'm happy about that.
01:50You mentioned the practice. What did the rehearsal process look for you?
01:54Oh, every single rehearsal looked a bit different. Obviously like this is the first time I've ever hosted a rehearsal.
02:04And so there was a lot of planning that went into it. I kind of went through what was, what
02:10I was going to teach or what I was going to introduce.
02:14Yeah, that sounds really good. Could you tell me a little bit about how you started to get into dance
02:19and choreography?
02:20Um, I got into dance when I was very young. I started with ballet when I was very young. I
02:27don't remember much about that. But then I think I started doing street dance and hip hop when I was
02:33about 12 years old.
02:35Um, which is a bit late for some people. But yeah, I went to a dance school and I would
02:41have weekly classes there. It was quite intense to be honest.
02:44And for any future dancers, what advice would you give to them that are maybe interested in starting out in
02:50street dance?
02:51Just start from somewhere because I know, at least for me personally, I had always been insecure about my dancing.
02:57Being taught from like a school, everybody was so much better than I was. And I'd always thought that kind
03:04of brought me down a little bit.
03:06And then I would just watch a bunch of my friends being so much better than I was, even though
03:10I went to a school that actually taught me the basics.
03:14But I learned that it's best not to care about how other people dance. At the end of the day,
03:20everyone dances differently.
03:21And you're never going to find your own niche or your own style until you just do it.
03:28It comes with practice and it's, you just have to do it, I guess. You have to start somewhere.
03:33Thank you so much, Candy, for joining us today.
03:35Thank you very much.
03:43Next is this week's Macro Meals, where we show you ways of creating healthy and filling meals without emptying your
03:48pocket.
03:49This week, Jude Moulton shows us that a sweet treat doesn't have to be a cheat on your diet with
03:54brownies that look just as good as they taste.
03:56Let's see what he made.
04:00Hello and welcome back to this week's Macro Meals, where we'll show you how to make cheap and healthy dishes.
04:05Now, we know that desserts usually get a bad reputation for when you want to have a healthy lifestyle.
04:09But today, I'm going to show you that is not the case, as we are going to make some low
04:13calorie, high protein chocolate brownies.
04:15Let's get started.
04:16First, let's start by preheating your oven to 180 degrees.
04:20Add 55 grams of cocoa powder and 60 grams of chocolate protein powder into a mixing bowl.
04:25Then add 110 grams of plain flour and 60 grams of sugar.
04:28Crack one small egg into a bowl and one teaspoon of mineral extract.
04:32Add 75 grams of chocolate chips to add extra sweetness.
04:35And then pour in one cup of almond milk or any type of milk.
04:40And mix everything together until the batter becomes smooth.
04:46Line an oven proof dish with baking paper, pour in the brownie mixture and spread it out evenly.
04:52Then you want to place the dish into the oven and bake for 25 minutes.
04:57Once ready, carefully take out the brownie dish.
05:00To check if they are actually baked through, use a fork into the centre and if it comes out clean,
05:05it is fully cooked.
05:06Now leave it at cool for 5 minutes.
05:07Customs are 8 squares and they are ready to enjoy.
05:10And here is the finished product.
05:12It makes 8 servings and the macros will be on screen for you now.
05:15160 calories, 9.5 grams of protein, 17 grams of carbs and only 6 grams of fat.
05:22And for only 160 calories, I'll definitely be making them again.
05:26But that's it for this week's Macro Meals.
05:32Now, we know that studying all day can get so monotonous and sometimes the activities you want to do can
05:38be expensive.
05:38But this does not always have to be the case when getting creative with photography.
05:43Whether it be a camera or your phone, anyone can try their hand at being a photographer.
05:48So in this week's We Try Out, Leila Sparrow and Marcelis Almazar got picture perfect and took portraits of each
05:54other.
05:54Let's see how they did.
05:56One, two, three, go.
05:58We try out.
06:01We try out.
06:03We try out photography.
06:06Welcome to We Try Out where every week we try out a new activity.
06:09My name's Leila Sparrow.
06:10And my name's Marcelis Almazar and today we're here with a photography enthusiast to show us around the camera.
06:15But first, let's find out a little bit more about photography.
06:18The basis of photography dates back all the way to the 1800s with the French inventor Niepce
06:22after using a sheet of pewter covered in bitumen and then exposing it to light for eight whole hours, creating
06:28the first photograph.
06:30Since then, the art form has flourished into a beautiful activity that many take part in during their day-to
06:34-day lives.
06:35We spoke to photography enthusiast Adriana Lawson to find out more about it.
06:39Well, I go into photography mostly because it's just like a really relaxing hobby of mine.
06:44I would 100% recommend it to other students.
06:46I think it's just such a good stress-free activity.
06:48A good photographer, I don't think there actually is such thing.
06:51You know, I feel like we see the world in lots of like different angles and perspectives.
06:55If you have an eye for something, that's your eye for something.
06:58So don't let other people sort of judge and be like, you know, that's not a good picture.
07:01It's your sort of perspective on it.
07:03So Adriana, what kind of things do you need for this activity?
07:06Well, all you really need is just your phone.
07:08You don't need a tripod or a professional camera.
07:09Just your phone and you have a camera.
07:11Adriana taught us the basics of photography, including composition, which focuses on where the subject is in the frame.
07:17And also, I didn't realise how important light was because it totally changes how the subject is perceived.
07:29Okay, so we've learned the basics and now we're going to try it out on each other.
07:32So I'm going to take a picture of you on a camera.
07:34And I'm going to take a picture of you on my phone.
07:35And let's see how it comes out.
07:37Can't wait to see it!
07:38She also went through how to focus the camera.
07:40For example, for this camera here, you twist the lens until your subject looks crystal clear.
07:44And it's really interesting because these are things that you don't really think about when taking a picture.
07:47But if you apply them all, you can get a great photograph.
07:50Shall we show each other?
07:51Yes.
07:52Three, two, one.
07:55Oh, I look so cute!
07:56That's really cute, I like that.
07:57You know what, there's not much of a difference between them.
08:00No, I mean, we've gone through different styles, but I wouldn't say one's better than the other.
08:04So, do you think we could be professional photographers?
08:06Oh yes, absolutely.
08:07This is just the beginning of your brand new photography adventure.
08:10I had so much fun, I learned so much today, and I think this is a skill that anyone really
08:14could pick up.
08:15We both did really well.
08:16And that was this week's We Try Out.
08:21We try out.
08:24And finally, while at university, it's not uncommon to experience loneliness, anxiety, or a period of low moods.
08:30For some, it's their first time away from home, and for others, it's their first time living in a different
08:35country.
08:36So, this week's Student 101 support, Nicole Stewart-Couperdin is here to speak with me about some advice on how
08:43to help yourself and others when we might not be feeling our best.
08:47So, hi Nicole, thanks for joining me today.
08:51Thanks for coming.
08:52Recently, it was University Mental Health Day.
08:56What makes this year's University Mental Health Day special?
08:59So, this year, the theme was actually quite unique.
09:02It is human connection.
09:03Nearly three million adults across the country, and around one in three students, have reportedly felt or feel lonely while
09:11at university.
09:11And this is according to the charity Student Minds, who organise the day.
09:16Earlier, I asked Jackie Middleton, who is the head of the University of Kent's student mental health team, on what
09:22advice you'd give to students who feel anxious or lonely while at university.
09:27There's so much going on when you come to university, freshers week, etc.
09:31But if somebody's feeling really anxious, it's important that they take time to actually find out what the different services
09:38are that can support them.
09:40And to talk to as many people as possible.
09:43So, to talk to their academic advisors or supervisors, whoever it may be, to ensure that they are keeping hold
09:49of any kind of reference that they have to wellbeing services.
09:53We do our best to kind of educate students as to us being here, why we're here and who we
09:58are.
10:00But there's a certain element of that where we expect students to kind of reach out to us as well.
10:05Being anxious at university is quite normal, but sometimes people get a little bit too much of anxiety.
10:10So, registering with a GP as well is another really good step.
10:14Once they've done that, they can then get some support moving forward.
10:18And for anyone watching today who is trying to be a better support person for a friend or maybe a
10:25fellow student, how might they go about doing that?
10:29So, in my conversation with Jackie, we actually discussed this quite a bit.
10:34You can always direct them to the student support services that are available on campus.
10:38Maybe even tag along if they feel comfortable in you doing so.
10:43But try to talk to them.
10:44Conversations are really important when it comes to this kind of thing.
10:48Be non-judgmental.
10:49Listen to them without interrupting.
10:51Because being there for someone is so important.
10:54But it's also important to know your own limits.
10:57Don't take on too much of the burden.
11:00You need to make sure that you set boundaries at the very beginning to know what topics you are most
11:05comfortable talking about with them.
11:08And what's the importance of having a week dedicated to the mental health of students?
11:12Well, it's a very important week to a lot of people.
11:15One in five or around 20% of adults in England have a common mental health condition.
11:20This can range from depression, anxiety, OCD.
11:23And this is according to NHS data.
11:25There are an increasing number of students accessing university support services
11:30and an increasing amount of students who are leaving university due to mental health difficulties.
11:35Thank you. Thank you so much.
11:37You've been watching Kent Student 101.
11:41Goodbye.
12:05Goodbye.
12:06Goodbye.
12:06Goodbye.
12:06Goodbye.
12:06Goodbye.
