The Sports Junkies debate if the Washington Wizards should sign Lebron James.
Transcript
00:00it's a rumor it's probably unfounded yeah but lebron is a free agent and i can't remember the
00:10account that threw it out there but it was what about lebron to the washington wizards he'd be
00:15able to play with his buddy okay anthony davis they won a championship in the bubble for the
00:23lakers and then you have an ascending team in the washington wizards who are going to have the
00:32number one pick let's throw in debansa there and you have these players that are coming on i believe
00:38lebron on his podcast that he does with steve nash a few weeks ago was really complimentary of the young
00:47talent that the washington wizards have assembled what would it be he said very intriguing what
00:54would it be if you had a lineup of trey young uh let's put a.j debansa in the backcourt
01:01with him
01:02okay six lebron james guard yep small forward anthony davis and alex r where is that in the eastern
01:13conference is that a championship contending lineup it's an older lineup if you have both anthony davis
01:20and lebron in it it's kind of weird like putting those old guys you're gonna put a billion people
01:26in the seats the hard part for me to guess is you know anthony davis just doesn't play right he's
01:32always getting hurt but if they were all healthy if they were all healthy all right the knicks are in
01:39the nba finals in the eastern conference right now right are they as good as the knicks well
01:44they're certainly not as young but ad can match up with carl anthony towns if you just go down the
01:51list um uh you know mccall bridges and og ananobi you would have sar and lebron james kind of like
01:59the wizards there and then your backcourt all right it'd be young because you got debansa and young but
02:06it would be brunson and who am i missing josh hart yep hart i mean it actually lines up like
02:12just five for five i'm not talking about depth because i have a hard time suspending my disbelief
02:18but the knicks just last week we saw the study that said that the wizards were the second least
02:22attractive free agent destination for any player yeah yeah trailing memphis trailed them by a lot but
02:29i just find it hard to believe that lebron is going to look at the whole nba landscape
02:33all right just play the game with me though i gotta end my career how would they match up
02:38i mean they're they would be much better because of the names but the knicks are just a they're not
02:43just talented especially with brunson they're a good team these guys have never played together
02:50before besides lebron and ad right we don't have a mix would work but i mean the knicks are just
02:55a
02:55great team well coached really good team i don't know i mean based on the the names yeah i mean
03:01people would would love to see lebron here but are does lebron want to come here just because ad's
03:06here for like one year that seems weird are people like just assuming lebron's going to leave the
03:12lakers or they're just looking at the possibilities because he's an unrestricted free agent because i
03:17think there's don't want to play with the sun i i would probably be the assumption is his son
03:23would come his son would probably come um i think there's just some that believe that luca and lebron
03:28didn't mix great um now they won before luca got hurt they won what 14 out of 16 games when
03:37they
03:37were on the score they were playing great together maybe he doesn't really like being the the third
03:42guy you know he when he came back from injury uh it was luca's team with austin reeves is the
03:49two and
03:50he was kind of the third option when those guys got hurt at the end you got to see lebron
03:55uh reassert himself as the man and maybe he wants to be the man they didn't like that role
04:02it's all speculation but my question is let's just play the hypothetical game trey aj lebron
04:10saw an ad all right forget the knicks you say they're a better team how do they match up with
04:16the calves would they be better than the calves calves were just in the eastern conference finals
04:20a place that the wizards slash bullets haven't been to since we were all nine years old it's been
04:29eight or nine years old are they better than boston could they get to the eastern conference finals with
04:34that lineup if i look at cleveland backcourt james harden older uh donovan mitchell they got mobley and
04:42allen um could they be a 50 win team they've got mobley and allen which would be similar to anthony
04:51davis and saar right mobley uh former defensive player of the year anthony davis i believe former
04:57defensive player of the year uh jared allen kind of more of a rough and tough guy yeah yeah yeah
05:04rebounder but he's become a really good player i think that those uh the front court would match up
05:10pretty well and then you've got lebron yeah i mean lebron's here i think he would match up
05:15favorably with cleveland lebron's 41 he would be 42 i mean would you want that though would you want
05:21that one year run that's a different question doesn't it smack of michael jordan come here at
05:27the end of his run too like that's like we're gonna do that again well it feels like the run
05:32ending
05:32his career in washington it just seems bizarro or well charles barkley ended with houston right
05:37um i mean it happens sparkly's great but he's not lebron where'd patrick ewing end up seattle
05:42again great lebron's another level orlando or then arguably the greatest of all time he went on an
05:47odyssey toward the end of his career he's already been on a million teams and where did shack end up
05:51he was in phoenix for a while he was in boston i know they all but they kind of like
05:56those guys
05:57are just like barely in the league at that point those are like i don't know it would be fun
06:03but i
06:04think it's i think it's a pipe dream i just don't i don't want it i don't think what i
06:08want
06:09wasn't the paul pierce year one year the paul pierce year was it two years i mean paul pierce
06:17led him to some playoff success and you can make an argument i'm not saying that i would do it
06:22okay
06:23i probably would but i could make an argument that paul pierce showed the young guys this is how you
06:31win
06:31yeah so argument would be yes lebron's probably going to be here for a year or two i think he's
06:36maybe going to play two more years which would get him to 25 if he wants to add on a
06:41nice number
06:41you know you and i like to end on nice numbers so 25 years and he showed in the playoffs
06:46he's still
06:46got plenty in the tank right now he could smash into the wall next year but if you look at
06:51his
06:51playoff numbers take a look at lebron james playoff numbers this year i know he didn't play a 41 year
06:56old you're right um so let's say he's two years well you want to show aj debansa you want to
07:03show
07:04uh trey johnson you want to show alexar how to work what's a better example than lebron james
07:10he'd be the gold standard no doubt but yeah those young players that you're trying to build around i
07:16mean that they're with trey young davis and lebron they're just never going to i just feel like you're
07:20throwing away the whole like we're going to start with building but these young players
07:24didn't you do that by bringing in trey young and anthony davis in the first place i think you're
07:29barely you could barely hang on to it kind of did 1-800-636-1067 would you be intrigued to
07:37see
07:37lebron james come look it's probably a pipe dream and then how good would the team be i'll tell you
07:43if you just lined up rosters there's intangibles and we're not talking about depth well but if you
07:50just lined up starting five they would match up with everybody in the east
07:54with anthony davis and sar i mean okay but and then trey young and debonsa in the backcourt
08:00now debonsa assuming you know debonsa is going to be a rookie but let's just assume he's a decent
08:06rookie number one pick i would be better than and then lebron i mean i think he'd be really good
08:12even with the knicks i think they would match up right brunson better than trey young much better
08:19okay debonsa heart i mean i would i would give the backcourt to the knicks but then lebron
08:30and let's just say ad is the four versus town and anobi and no no and mccall bridges okay i'd
08:39give
08:40the edge to lebron and ad and then sarvers towns all right i'll give towns the edge but it's close
08:47and that's the team that is just tearing apart the eastern conference right now in the playoffs
08:51it's because they play you're just kind of basing it off names and reputations they play
08:56an awesome brand of basketball because they're all playing together as a team they're not just
09:01individuals you might get a lot of individuals uh individual efforts if you put all those guys
09:07here in washington that's just my opinion certainly and they've never played together before could
09:13they be a 47 to 52 win team probably doesn't mean they're going to these conference finals but lebron
09:20has always lifted his teams sure so i think they would figure out how to play basketball i just think
09:26it would be like a sugar high it would be a one year it would be wild seeing lebron around
09:31the city
09:31i would say two years okay i mean the city would go i think the city would go crazy i'm
09:38sure we'll
09:38get calls that say they don't want to see lebron but if he was here that city would go nuts
09:421-800-636-1067
09:44but would it hurt you i mean if it lebron hasn't hurt his teams when he has joined new teams
09:52like
09:52you could make an argument that kevin durant has like kevin durant joined the rockets this year i think
09:58the rockets were two seed last year this year there were five and they got bounced out by the lakers
10:03yep and lebron now um they want to play some games kevin durant played like a game and a half
10:10of the
10:10lebron hurt a team that hasn't accomplished anything in the wizards so would you be pro or con sure i
10:17mean
10:18you're adding one of the greatest superstars to ever play the game to your roster i would want him to
10:23play
10:23two years though i the one year would seem like just a novelty act i wouldn't want the two
10:27two-year commitment if i could get that let's go to the phones 1-800-636-1067 let's go to
10:34curtis
10:35in dc hey curtis what's up buddy y'all with the junkies good morning how y'all doing
10:40i don't want no no bond here i mean for what we don't we don't take all year to get
10:46young
10:47now y'all trying to bring the old guy on the team so people come out and put people in
10:53the seats
10:53that don't make any sense i kind of am with you it just doesn't make sense of what they've been
10:57trying to do the last three years well we can do without him let him go to cleveland somewhere i
11:02mean he want to keep chasing these rings that he ain't gonna get let him go to cleveland and
11:06retire two years but not here because you can't become here you're gonna take the development of
11:10the young guy that you get you drafted lebron will still want his shot and then we're used with
11:14stuff to go wrong he's gonna point fingers i mean come on i mean enough is enough with him
11:19let him retire i'm sick of him thank y'all good morning yeah all right thank you buddy
11:23appreciate lebron to just go away yeah i mean that's the that's the thing if you're gonna build
11:28around the sars and the aj's or peterson whoever they draft or boozer you kind of want to let them
11:35develop and and handle the ball and take shots and get better as players you bring lebron in with
11:40ad and trey i mean those guys are never gonna touch the ball i mean how's that gonna help yeah
11:45well if ad by the way if ad and trey play let's say they're healthy and they play all the
11:53games
11:53without lebron those guys aren't touching the ball much either that's true well you're gonna
11:56bring in lebron i mean trey's gonna take lebron's gonna average 23 i mean i'm i'm just spitballing
12:02here but i'm gonna average that trey young averages 18 shots a game and probably anthony davis is probably
12:09a 14 to 15 shots a game it's not much left after that not much to go around let's go
12:15go to go to brendan in dc brendan what's up 800-636-1067 do you want to give this any
12:23real
12:23thought lebron potentially coming here to dc brendan gentlemen good morning can i ask you guys a
12:32question have we forgotten what lebron said to gilbert at the free throw line in those playoff
12:38series that we lost back to back the crap yes i have i don't understand how we were talking about
12:44this absolutely not do not step foot in the city we don't want you i don't want you i mean
12:50i don't
12:50know if i speak for myself lebron is one of those figures he's like what tom brady is to the
12:56dolphins
12:56to the jets absolutely not are you cool with anthony davis and trey young playing together all season
13:03okay maybe it's a dream but do you want those guys playing all season with these young guys
13:10uh absolutely i'm i'm for that i'm for seeing i mean you have you know a proven winner and
13:15anthony davis an experienced point guard and trey young these two guys give us something that we
13:19haven't seen in this area with this team for a while so why not give it a chance and see
13:23what it is
13:24that they can give if it doesn't work you know you've got multiple pieces to move but absolutely
13:28we have two all nba players at their respective positions this is something that we haven't had in
13:34this town on this team in years what if what if i tell you what if i tell you they
13:39move anthony davis
13:40would you be okay with lebron here i would not know okay so you're okay with the two vets being
13:46anthony davis and trey young even though lebron plays on average way more games per season than
13:51anthony davis well he's got a personal vendetta against lebron yeah absolutely it's 1000 personal
13:57and i don't see how anybody else not in this city doesn't have that same vendetta due to what that
14:02guy did and what happened and what he would like i've already forgotten to be honest with you
14:06i don't know i will say this i think i think the city would go nuts i've gotten over it
14:10i think the
14:11city would go nuts if lebron came i don't want him because i want to stay with the youth and
14:16and
14:16see this thing through at this point but if they brought lebron here can you imagine how nuts the
14:21city would be just even on offense there would be i just i just want to i just want to
14:25quote quote the
14:26show i don't want lebron here because it will impact alex sar's development yes i just i just
14:33want to it's really crazy at the very end of his career be different if it was in the prime
14:37of his
14:37career or something oh no man they would match up and i just don't know that having lebron james
14:42there really hurts i mean will riley and queshawn george yeah they wouldn't get as many minutes but
14:50if you're willing to play with trey young and anthony davis i just looked at it i was right
14:55trey young averages 18.3 shots per game in his career anthony davis is at 17 so that's 35 shots
15:02on average every game will riley queshawn george bub all those guys they're already going to be
15:09getting limited shots because your top two dogs are going to be anthony davis and trey young if
15:13they're on the court together right i assumed uh davis would be on the court half the time
15:19it's a reasonable assumption 40 to 50 games that would be my assumption yeah so you're probably
15:23you're willing to play ball with anthony davis on the court not hurting the development but not
15:28with lebron i would that actually seems personal too i wouldn't have acquired anthony davis but they
15:33did 1-800-636-1067 remember paul damoni president of baseball operations for your washington nationals
15:41he'll join us at nine o'clock
15:42you
