00:00The NBA's Board of Governors voted overwhelmingly on Thursday
00:04to change the league's draft lottery format beginning with the 2027 NBA draft.
00:11So starting next year, there's going to be a new system for the lottery.
00:14The new format expands the lottery from 14 to 16 teams,
00:19including the eighth seed in each conference's playoff picture,
00:22and adds anti-tanking measures where the bottom three teams are dealt lesser chances
00:27for the No. 1 pick while flattening odds for teams that do not qualify for the playoffs
00:32or the play-in tournament.
00:35Got in just under the wire, K.
00:37We snuck it in.
00:38The Wiz got that tanking done right in time.
00:42And they also will not allow teams to have back-to-back top picks,
00:46so the Wizards would not be able to have the No. 1.
00:48Now, you would hope that they wouldn't be that bad where they'd be in the mix
00:53for the No. 1 pick, but you can't get back-to-back overall No. 1 picks
00:57in drafts.
00:58Yeah, the vote was 29 to 1 in favor of the new system.
01:02Oh, yeah.
01:03So the teams were clear that they wanted this in place.
01:06Yeah, so the worst three teams leading up to next year
01:10had a 14% chance of getting the top pick.
01:13So the Wizards had a 14, I think it was 14.1 or whatever.
01:15Now they have a 5.4% chance, so it drops 9%.
01:19Good.
01:20I like it.
01:21The worst three teams.
01:22So you've got a better chance being the 4th to the 10th worst team
01:28because now you've got about an 8% chance of getting the top pick
01:31as opposed to the worst three teams, 5.4% chance.
01:35It really kind of sucks if your season just goes south
01:38and you lose a couple players and you're not even trying to be bad.
01:42You're just bad.
01:43You're just so bad.
01:43You're just bad.
01:44You're getting penalized for that under this new system.
01:47So I understand why they have to put it in place
01:50because a lot of these games became farces that you're watching.
01:55You know, like all G League players, teams with no incentive to win whatsoever,
02:00actively trying to lose games.
02:03So I understand why it's being implemented,
02:05but it's going to penalize some innocent teams along the way
02:10that aren't trying to be bad.
02:12They're just organically bad.
02:14There were so many ideas thrown out there how to change it
02:17and how to prevent these teams from tanking.
02:19Fans were pissed that teams were losing on purpose.
02:22And we saw what happened to the Wizards.
02:24The Wizards lost 26 of their last 27 games.
02:27I mean, they were obviously trying to lose intentionally.
02:32Fans didn't like it.
02:33The media hammered the league for allowing it.
02:36And so they've come up with a system they think is going to work,
02:40the 3-2-1 system,
02:42referring to the amount of balls that will be in the draft lottery.
02:46But they can't take our number one pick away from us.
02:48That is in stone.
02:50That is solidified.
02:51Better nail it.
02:53Better get it right.
02:54And I think they will.
02:55I mean, I'm not saying this guy's going to be a future Hall of Famer,
02:58but I think that whoever they take at one is going to be a damn good player
03:01and be really good for them for a long time.
03:03I'm pretty sure it's down to Peterson and DeBonsa.
03:06I would agree with that.
03:07Boozer could be sneaking in there.
03:08If somehow the Wizards find a lemon at the top of the draft
03:13in one of the most loaded draft classes of recent history,
03:17Well, certainly front-loaded.
03:18Then I might start to buy into it's a cursed franchise.
03:24I don't think so.
03:26There's some sort of curse that will just never be lifted.
03:28No, I think this group's really good.
03:31I think they're really good.
03:32I think they're very sharp and smart.
03:34But, you know, I was listening to a ton of content yesterday.
03:38And Gary Parish, we've had on the show a bunch.
03:41I love Gary Parish.
03:42He thinks DeBonsa will go one, but he'll tell you he thinks the most talented player
03:49is Darren Peterson.
03:50But because of the questions like the Cakes has and others have about what the hell happened,
03:55it's enough to make him just take DeBonsa, who's been kind of like the number one guy
04:00all along, and there's literally no negatives, really.
04:03Okay, he doesn't shoot the three that great.
04:05So he thinks DeBonsa's a really damn good player.
04:07He just thinks Peterson's slightly better.
04:08Does his push come to shove from just a pure talent?
04:10I mean, does he think there's a huge gap?
04:12No, I just said pure talent.
04:14If you were just saying, who's the most talented basketball player?
04:16Yeah, right.
04:16He says that I would say it's Peterson.
04:19But because of the questions, it's just enough to make teams...
04:23DeBonsa go one.
04:25To make DeBonsa go one.
04:26In his opinion.
04:27Yeah.
04:27We will see.
04:28Well, look, I mean, 95% of the league thinks Peterson's a really good player
04:34because he's going to go two.
04:35He'll probably go two.
04:36If he doesn't go one, he's probably going to go two.
04:39The one thing he did point out, I think, in his favor...
04:41All those other teams aren't that scared of it.
04:43Parrish hammered him for just not being up front and just the whole thing and the questions.
04:51I can't remember.
04:52Who would he play at one point where they were playing the number one team in the country at the
04:54time?
04:55And he pulled out an hour before the game.
04:57I can't remember who it was.
04:59Maybe it was Arizona?
05:00It might have been.
05:01Weber was number one in the country at the time.
05:03And everyone thought he was going to play.
05:04And he pulled out an hour before.
05:06And they said there were flu-like symptoms or something.
05:07He said it was a big question mark.
05:11But he did point out that once they figured it out, or at least he figured it out in his
05:15head,
05:15he played the last nine great games, averaged 28 minutes a game.
05:18He played a lot, yeah.
05:19Just down the stretch.
05:20I think he averaged 30 minutes a game in the tournament.
05:24So, I actually think they figured it out, but we'll see.
05:28The other factor is guys mature.
05:30So, let's put it on immaturity, or maybe voices from outside saying,
05:37hey, you're getting paid all this NIL money.
05:40You're going to be a top draft pick.
05:42Don't risk it.
05:43Versus playing.
05:44Well, here's another.
05:45Might have matured.
05:46Now, the weird part about it is, in the NBA, there's load management.
05:51In the NBA, guys are missing games all the time.
05:54I don't think he wants to miss games.
05:55I mean, if you look at the All-NBA team, which just came out,
05:59remember Luka Doncic and Cade Cunningham both had to file waivers
06:06and go through some sort of arbitration so that they would be eligible for the All-NBA teams,
06:11which required a minimum of 65 games, which, by the way, is missing 17 games.
06:17So, they ended up being granted those waivers,
06:21but they missed more than 17 games during the year, which is a pretty good percentage.
06:26I don't know what the exact percentage, but what is 65 over 82?
06:30I'm sure I can do that.
06:31You're missing like 17% of your games?
06:33Ask the spelling bee, kid.
06:34Here's another theory.
06:37Oh, by the way, I think the game you're talking about was when Kansas played Duke.
06:41I think probably.
06:42Because he did not play in that game.
06:44Yeah, probably.
06:45Yeah.
06:46And I will kind of hammer Peterson a little bit.
06:48Now, look, it's the NCAA tournament.
06:51But when they lost to St. John's in the second round, he played a lot of minutes.
06:55He played 36, but he didn't play very well.
06:57Well, fair.
06:58Can't always play great.
06:59And so they lost to St. John's.
07:02I listened to so many Hoop podcasts yesterday, and it was crazy.
07:05I was riding my bike, and I put things on 1.5, so you can listen to stuff fast.
07:10But one of the Wizards pods, I think it was by that guy, Greg Finberg.
07:13I'm not sure what the name of his pod is.
07:15It was great.
07:16Enjoyed it.
07:16Very nerdy.
07:18Had a guest on, and he basically said he had reason to believe, from people he spoke to,
07:22that there was an early season kind of like conditioning incident.
07:27This is kind of what he gathered.
07:29That happened at Kansas, where he locked up on the cramping and everything,
07:34and he kind of lost faith in the training staff at Kansas, right?
07:38So whatever happened, he just kind of lost faith because he cramped up so bad,
07:44thought he was going to die, whatever, and it just kind of marred sort of the trust.
07:49Mike marred it.
07:49It kind of Mike marred the trust.
07:51Yeah.
07:52And that's kind of what happened.
07:54So what if that happens when he's with the Jazz?
07:57That's why I'd be scared off by him.
08:01Okay.
08:01Well, I'm sure he's hired some really good people around him.
08:06That incident is not necessarily indicative of the kind of kid he is.
08:10I think they're probably very confident that they corrected it.
08:13Yeah.
08:13But I would just say that since you're going from a season where you're playing 40 minutes,
08:1940-minute games, and he was playing about 23 to 26,
08:24to 48-minute games and almost triple the amount of games, or double,
08:31it's a long haul, man.
08:33It's tough with all the travel.
08:34So there's questions.
08:35I get it.
08:35Yeah.
08:36But maybe they feel like they corrected it.
08:37I don't know.
08:37We'll see.
08:38I literally can't wait for it.
08:39I'm so intrigued by this draft.
08:41Yeah.
08:42That's what happens when you land the number one pick.
08:44Very intrigued.
08:45Yeah, but I feel like in other years, you kind of knew.
08:48I mean, not every year, but you kind of know who's going to go.
08:51There's definitely intrigue here.
08:53But there's just an extra buzz about having the number one overall pick.
08:55For sure.
08:56Instead of having, like, two or five.
08:59I mean, two's pretty damn good.
09:00Two's not bad.
09:01Two's great.
09:02But number one's better.
09:02And they got Sar, and Sar looks like a really good player.
09:04I do sometimes wonder now recently, when I'm watching the Spurs, if they should have drafted
09:10Castle.
09:12Castle's really good.
09:13Yeah, he's a good player.
09:14Yeah, I don't know.
09:14He's really good.
09:16I don't know.
09:16Really good on defense, too.
09:18But Sar's a good...
09:19Yes.
09:19He's good.
09:20And Sar had a big jump from year one to year two.
09:22I suppose we'll see a big jump from year two to year three.
09:25I would agree.
09:25I would think.
09:27By the way, I slipped out because, thank you to our listeners, but Tim is a body shop
09:31guy.
09:32He's going to take a look at your damage.
09:33This is the show.
09:34We've met him a few times, and he was going to take a look-see.
09:36He's a great guy.
09:37Here's what I don't know.
09:39So, I was just going to plan...
09:41Can you fix the check engine light?
09:42I was just going to plan to call the insurance company, right?
09:45Yeah.
09:45But he's almost advising, well, you don't have to call your insurance.
09:49You can just probably avoid paying a deductible this way.
09:53Right.
09:54Just go direct.
09:54But what if they call their insurance, and their insurance calls my insurance?
09:59Yeah.
09:59I mean, you're...
10:00Take me his brains in a pretzel right now.
10:01Yeah.
10:02How long have you had that...
10:03I'm out of breath.
10:03I just ran back here from the garage with Tim.
10:06How long have you had that car for?
10:08Like two months.
10:09Yeah.
10:09What happened on the back left bumper?
10:11Yeah.
10:11That's another little issue.
10:12That was just backing up.
10:14But that's not an accident.
10:16Who'd you back into?
10:16Well, he said that's more expensive than the thing on the front.
10:19Yeah.
10:19I'm not going to fix that.
10:20What did you do?
10:22Just...
10:23It's backing up in a soccer practice.
10:27But what did you do?
10:28Did you hit a pole?
10:29No, no, no.
10:30Just touched one of my teammates' cars.
10:33Oh, my God.
10:34Oh, that's kind of a fender bender.
10:36Yeah, but there's...
10:37A fender bender.
10:38Yeah, yeah.
10:38He touched.
10:39He touched.
10:39I like the word touch.
10:41Touched it.
10:42You're on fire, bro.
10:43No, that was not...
10:44Today was way more serious.
10:46I mean...
10:46He's slow rolling.
10:48Yeah.
10:48He's slow rolling the fact that...
10:50It definitely is all scraped up in the back.
10:52He's got damage on the front and back end.
10:54Hey, don't tell Geico or whoever you have.
10:57We didn't even know.
10:59We were about to leave and Yard goes, what about the back?
11:02And I go, there's nothing back there.
11:03He goes, oh, yeah, yeah.
11:04Two weeks ago.
11:05I get goofed on for backing my car in all the time.
11:07I'll never...
11:08I mean, unless I actually have to.
11:10You don't partner people.
11:11I'm sorry?
11:11You don't like to partner people.
11:13You park far away.
11:14That's true.
11:15Yeah.
11:15But I also back my car in, so I don't have to back out.
11:18Because that happened while you're backing out.
11:21Yeah, yeah, yeah.
11:21Oh, usually I actually back my car in.
11:23In theory, couldn't it happen when you back into the spot, too?
11:25I mean, you're kind of...
11:26You're backing...
11:27I mean, you...
11:28Only if you're not paying attention.
11:30Only if you're clueless and you're backing way too fast.
11:31It's the same thing with backing out.
11:33Well, you have a camera that you should be able to see how close the car is.
11:37When you're pulling out and you're backed in, unless you're just a complete clown and don't
11:43know how to drive, you're not going to hit anything.
11:44Your chances of hitting something when you're backing out ass first, I think, are way higher
11:49than when you're pulling out if you've backed into a spot.
11:52I suppose.
11:53But again, with the cameras, it's so hard to really hit stuff.
11:56Exactly.
11:57You've got so many alarms going off and lights going off.
11:59But I know I'm not hitting anything when I'm pulling straight out.
12:04Unless I'm just driving with my eyes closed.
12:06Maybe you should just keep both dents.
12:10I mean, keep them one.
12:11Have two Richards?
12:12Yeah.
12:12I don't have a dent.
12:13Why would you fix one, not the other?
12:15I guess I could.
12:16No, you'd have to fix both.
12:17But why did you decide that you're adamant the back one's staying?
12:21Because it...
12:22That Richards is staying.
12:23It's not a big deal.
12:24He does think it's very minor.
12:25It's nothing.
12:26It's just...
12:27Is one more of an eyesore than the other?
12:29No, this one's not even really an eyesore.
12:31It's almost hard to see the damage.
12:34Just Tim...
12:34Well, Matt saw it.
12:35Tim, I guess, sent a text.
12:37The one today is you can barely see.
12:38Yeah.
12:39That's what I'm saying.
12:39Matt, you saw it.
12:40The one on the back left bumper that he's hiding and embarrassed about?
12:44Yeah.
12:44It hurts me.
12:45It's way worse.
12:46It looks terrible.
12:47You just don't want to deal with that because you know that's more expensive.
12:50I mean, I don't think it looks terrible.
12:51Is he trying to claim that it's not visible?
12:53Well, it's definitely visible.
12:55The one he got in the accident this morning is kind of hard to tell.
12:57Right.
12:59So I would do the one that's more visible.
13:02Martin Truex gets in less accidents.
13:04I like how he was really selling that first time in 30 years this morning when he got
13:08into a wreck two weeks ago.
13:09He was definitely slow playing that.
13:11That wasn't a wreck.
13:12Yeah, but it's an incident.
13:14It's an incident.
13:15I don't know what you call it.
13:16I'd like to see the other car.
13:17They kiss bumpers.
13:18Yeah, they touch.
13:19Just kiss it.
13:20The other car wasn't moving.
13:21It's a parked car.
13:22No, I'm just talking about the car you get through.
13:24You can have a single car accident.
13:26Okay.
13:27Yeah.
13:27Hold on.
13:27So you were moving.
13:28When you backed into the teammate's car, was there any damage to that car?
13:32No.
13:33Are you sure?
13:34Just to your car.
13:35Believe me.
13:36That can happen sometimes.
13:38That's strange.
13:39You know what I did the other day?
13:40I was looking for a Mother's Day gift for my wife, right?
13:45So I went to the mall.
13:46I haven't been in the mall in months.
13:48Went to the mall.
13:49Parked near Macy's.
13:52Struck out.
13:53Frustrated.
13:54Got in the car.
13:55And there's just space in front of me.
13:57So I just said, I'm just going to pull forward.
14:00I went.
14:00I pulled forward.
14:01Bam!
14:02I drove right into something.
14:03I don't know what the hell was underneath my car.
14:05There was something underneath me.
14:06You could not go forward.
14:07It looked like you could go forward to what I could see.
14:11A curb?
14:11I don't even think it was a curb.
14:13I think there was some metal thing, something there.
14:15It was a weird spot.
14:17My dumb ass.
14:18And I startled two old people that were walking right past me.
14:21And I went, my bad.
14:23Had to reverse out of the spot.
14:25At least you didn't hit the old people.
14:26No, I didn't hit the old people.
14:27That's good.
14:28That's solid.
14:29As far as I could tell, it didn't really scratch anything.
14:30I think my car was raised up high enough that I dodged it.
14:33My brain, though, isn't a pretzel.
14:34So thank you to Tim.
14:35But what happens if I have Tim take care of my body work and I pay him so I don't
14:40call
14:40my insurance, but they call the insurance and contact my insurance, right?
14:44You're boned.
14:44Yeah.
14:45So it almost makes me feel like I should.
14:47Unless they contact you and you just write a check yourself.
14:50Like you could say, you know what?
14:52It's better for me to pay the $500.
14:53You can bypass.
14:53Not call them.
14:55It's cheaper than my $1,000.
14:56That way your rate doesn't go up.
14:57Am I right?
14:57Yeah, right.
14:58It sounds like JP is such a doo-doo driver.
15:00He needs Tim's number on speed dial.
15:02Yeah.
15:04Apparently at age 55, I do.
15:06It's probably too late now, but just say, hey, whatever the damages are, call me, send
15:10me the bill, and then you'll figure out if you either send it to insurance or if you'll
15:14handle it yourself.
15:14Yeah, this was my botch again.
15:16You get flustered.
15:16I don't have their phone number.
15:18Right.
15:19I have their driver's license, and I have an insurance card of a different car that they
15:23say is the same insurance.
15:25He's probably going to have paralysis by this afternoon.
15:30I mean, it can happen, though.
15:32If your neck hurts now, it will get worse.
15:35I don't know if it's psychosomatic or not.
15:37You just start...
15:38It tends to get a little stiffer.
15:40All right, let's go to...
15:41Actually, Tim is calling in.
15:43Tim for the body shop.
15:44All right.
15:45Tim.
15:47Yes, sir.
15:48Hey, Tim.
15:48All right, buddy.
15:49Tim, by the way, has a smoking ride.
15:51Oh, he does?
15:52He has like a green Mercedes.
15:53It looks really good.
15:55Really?
15:55Body shop business is good business, huh, Tim?
15:59It's okay.
16:00It was a lot of effort to get this far into it, yeah.
16:03All right, so what'd you see when you saw JP's vehicle?
16:08Well, JP probably gave somebody a good little nudge this morning with the front end.
16:13Mm-hmm.
16:13Yeah.
16:14And then your guy from the garage was nice enough to show us the one on the rear that
16:19might...
16:20It probably costs more to get the rear done than to do the front.
16:25Why?
16:26What's wrong with the rear?
16:28Well, you got all the sensors back there, and he's probably got...
16:32You say you got something on the dashboard now, too?
16:34That might be related to sensors in the rear.
16:38That's where things can get really expensive.
16:40What do you mean by the dashboard?
16:42I don't think he mentioned a dashboard.
16:45Oh, it was just a check engine light, maybe?
16:48Oh, I have that one.
16:48That was EB.
16:49Yeah, that's EB's problem.
16:51I told you my wife called me.
16:52She said, check engine light.
16:53When I said, don't worry about it, it'll probably go off.
16:57No, no, no.
16:58I don't have any problem with any sensors.
17:01Just my brain.
17:02Well that you know of.
17:03Yeah.
17:04Understood.
17:05Yeah.
17:06All right, so are you going to take care of him or what?
17:09That's up to him, but I'm certainly available.
17:12I would treat him fairly.
17:14I'm not doing it for publicity or whatever.
17:17I'd do it because you've brought me a lot of entertainment over the years, and if I can
17:22help out somewhere, I will.
17:24I appreciate it.
17:24He's working the trade, this guy.
17:26I appreciate it.
17:27Are you at his number?
17:28Yeah, yeah, we have Tim's number.
17:30Oh, yeah, we have Tim's number.
17:31Yeah, yeah, yeah.
17:32Oh, you do?
17:33Yeah, yeah, yeah.
17:34Because you guys are bumping into stuff.
17:36Yeah, but I don't hide it.
17:38I know I'm a bad driver.
17:40I smash stuff all the time.
17:42Or someone else I used to know did.
17:47Used to know.
17:48Yeah, gotcha.
