The Sports Junkies react to the Washington Wizards selecting AJ Dybantsa.
Transcript
00:00The Wizards got who they wanted and who the fans clearly wanted.
00:04We were there at the Anthem, obviously, and the place exploded when they announced...
00:10What's AJ's first name? Anse?
00:12Is it Anise? I think it's A-N-I-C-E-T, I believe is how it's spelled.
00:17I had never heard his name. I actually didn't know what his name was.
00:20I just thought... I just referred to him as AJ DeBonce, like everybody else on the planet.
00:25But when they announced it, everybody went wild.
00:28When he announced it, I was like, whose name?
00:31You thought it was someone different, didn't you?
00:33Whose name is that? I'm so reading.
00:35Did we turn in the wrong card?
00:36And then I heard DeBonce, and I was like, okay, we're good. We're good here.
00:40Yeah, well, the crowd said clearly who the crowd wanted.
00:44I watched Will Dawkins later. He's going to be on our show.
00:47I think he did a thing with the media around midnight or so, or well after midnight.
00:52And he kind of alluded to, you know, he's been watching this kid.
00:56He had notes on him for four years.
00:59And he'd been watching all these guys.
01:01And it seemed like people kind of trying to hint at, like, when was it done deal?
01:06And he basically said when he came in, because you got to meet him,
01:09and he did the workout and everything,
01:11and just alluded to all the statistical things that he did that were anomalies,
01:15you know, as a freshman.
01:17The numbers he put up, the way he led the team when Richie Saunders went down,
01:22the way he handles himself, the way that he works, his goals that he has,
01:28how he fits in with the culture.
01:29We're going to talk to Will.
01:30We'll get all that from him ourselves.
01:33But they felt pretty good.
01:35Although Will did acknowledge he looked at his notes one last time the night before
01:41because he wasn't sleeping a while.
01:43Like, you know, everybody had a little anxiety.
01:45And it just reassured him when he looked at his notes, yeah, we're getting the right time.
01:49And how great was it that Michael Winger, who's clearly a busy person on draft day,
01:55stopped by the broadcast, like, less than an hour before the pick was being made.
01:59And honestly, he didn't stop by to be interviewed.
02:02He just came by to say hello, which is a classy move.
02:06And then, you know, thank God we had the foresight and GP and Jason.
02:11Hey, stay here.
02:12Let's ask you a few questions.
02:14And he sat down and answered.
02:17Yeah, great.
02:17Did we ever have him on the show when he was first hired?
02:20Yeah.
02:20I think so on the phone.
02:21Maybe once.
02:22Maybe once.
02:22Yeah.
02:23I think so on the phone.
02:24Yeah, we haven't.
02:25But we haven't had him.
02:25It's the first time I've, you know, seen him.
02:27Every time we go out there, it's always Will, Will, Will, and Will calls us.
02:30Yeah, yeah.
02:31Hey, I'm just glad all the Wizards executives got parking because they were down there near the anthem.
02:37Doing the actual picks.
02:39Yeah.
02:39They weren't doing it, like, from Capital One Arena or their offices.
02:41They, like, rented out, like, a conference room.
02:44Oh, I've never seen a bigger cluster than those garages.
02:50I just went into one.
02:51Yeah.
02:51Apparently, there are a bunch of them.
02:53And there's no people down there.
02:56Like, in a day like that, when you know it's going to be packed, you see a few people normally
02:59in a garage.
02:59They'll point you and go here, go here.
03:01There was nobody helping anybody.
03:03People were just driving in circles.
03:04There was green signs that say, like, 19 spaces.
03:08You drive down, there's no spaces.
03:10There's nothing.
03:11There's the Hunger Games down there.
03:12It was the Hunger Games.
03:13I was behind you guys.
03:15And I knew I was going to be behind you guys because I had to drop off my kid in
03:17their soccer practice.
03:18And then the messages start flooding in as I'm about two miles away.
03:23EB's in a panic.
03:24Can't find a parking spot.
03:25Well, here's the problem.
03:26Then Cakes is recommending parking behind the Anthem.
03:28Then he says, no, not behind the Anthem.
03:30Park on 7th Street.
03:31And so I'm following all this stuff.
03:33And there was not any parking.
03:35Here was our fatal flaw.
03:36We tried to park in the garage that was closest to the Anthem initially.
03:42That was our mistake.
03:43We needed to park at the one off 7th Street that was, like, two or three blocks down the Wharf.
03:48This is why it was.
03:49I didn't think it was going to be that crowded.
03:51I didn't know.
03:52So usually when I go there for company holiday parties, there's a lot of people there.
03:57You easily get a spot.
03:58I mean, every restaurant.
04:00Last night was a joke.
04:01Every restaurant was crowded.
04:02Nobody cooks anymore.
04:04Plus the Anthem, there were 5,000 people there.
04:06So you have a nice summer night comboed with the fact that the Wizards are hosting this major event down
04:12at the Wharf.
04:13And there were a billion people down there.
04:15Well, and everybody was at restaurants watching on the big screens and everything following along.
04:19Yeah.
04:20I think that's part of the reason why.
04:21And watching the World Cup.
04:22I actually thought I was going to die in the garage.
04:25That I just would never get out.
04:27I didn't know how to get out.
04:28I pulled the ripcord.
04:29I was like, there's no spots down here.
04:31So I was like, I have to bail on this first garage.
04:34Pay $6 to drive around a labyrinth for 16 minutes, I believe.
04:41And then I just went to the garage.
04:44You should expense the $6 too.
04:46I'm expensing both.
04:47Yeah, you should.
04:47If I can figure out how to expense them.
04:49Right.
04:50I'm giving my ticket to Drabby.
04:51And here's the worst part.
04:52The second ticket, the more expensive of the two, is just the ticket.
04:56It doesn't have any details.
04:57It doesn't have to say it.
04:58So I'm going to have to write on it, Wharf, date, Wizards event, and it'll probably get denied by a
05:04bean counter somewhere in New York.
05:06I already threw away my ticket.
05:08I'm going to be better.
05:09The donk move for me was I waited around for Dylan, who has an internship at Monumental Sports.
05:16And so you guys were gone.
05:18Dylan and I walked to the parking garage, get the car, drive back.
05:21Now, he takes the Metro in to work.
05:23So he's at Metro Shady Grove.
05:25So the donk move was because it was late, I actually pulled into Park and Ride, not Kiss and Ride.
05:33Kiss and Ride is a free drop-off.
05:35Park and Ride, I had to pay full $5.60 for Park and Ride that I was there for two
05:43minutes.
05:44Yeah, that stinks.
05:44Drove in there, dropped him off in his car.
05:46I was like, oh, I pulled into the wrong zone of the parking lot.
05:51You boned yourself.
05:52Yeah.
05:52These things happen sometimes.
05:53What are you going to do?
05:54Well, when we checked into the media section, the lady gave Drove and I free parking passes.
06:00Well, she didn't give me any sort of thing like that.
06:03I'm salty.
06:04So I was like, okay, cool.
06:05It didn't work.
06:07When I showed up, Drove told me to meet, I guess, probably the lady who hooked you up because you
06:12guys actually had credentials.
06:13Sure.
06:14I got there and these guys had no clue who I was, what station I worked for.
06:20They told me to go to the third floor in the elevators.
06:22There was the elevators you needed to pass.
06:25And then the next thing I know, I'm backstage with cheerleaders.
06:29You should have come out.
06:30And then I saw some guy who vaguely knew who I was.
06:34And he finally guided me over to where we were doing the show.
06:38But hey, AJ DeBotts is a Washington Wizard.
06:40Yep.
06:41It's exciting.
06:42We'll play some audio throughout the show.
06:45We're all going to talk to the general manager, Will Dawkins.
06:47It's a big GM day.
06:49Paul Timoni is going to join us.
06:50Yep.
06:50Not a good bullpen day.
06:52One guy is happy.
06:53One guy is not.
06:53When I left the wharf, I think it was when I left the wharf, I looked over at the TV
06:59at one of the bars as I was walking by.
07:00And it was 4-3 in the eighth inning.
07:02What happened?
07:04The bullpen sinks.
07:05Your boy Brad Lord, who's been good.
07:07Yeah.
07:07He's like their six runs.
07:09He had a rough evening.
07:10They were one strike away from a win.
07:12Yeah.
07:13One strike away from a win.
07:14That's a terrible loss.
07:16And it's the bullpen.
07:17The bullpen is their...
07:19They have a couple of Achilles heels, but the biggest Achilles heel is the bullpen.
07:24Maybe Brad Lord had parked at the wharf and he was just tilted.
07:27He was just going to find a spot.
07:29You know what?
07:29You want to look for another...
07:30Dylan Cruz heating up.
07:32He had a couple hits.
07:33He had a two for four.
07:33Nunez had a couple hits.
07:35They actually...
07:35Somebody put out some graphic about just how Dylan Cruz has been smoking the ball and just been unlucky.
07:42Kind of what Taboni was referring to.
07:44He was talking about.
07:45So we'll talk to Taboni at 9 o'clock.
07:48The president of baseball operations for the Nationals.
07:50I know a lot of people on social media were like,
07:52You got to ask him if he's going to go get some arms.
07:55He knew bullpen.
07:56We've been asking him every week.
07:57He gives us the same answer.
07:59Will Dawkins at 8.
08:00Paul Taboni at 9.
08:01We're the junkies.
08:02Keep it here.
