00:00:00Rain is pouring off the back of the house.
00:00:02It rained in the house.
00:00:03Sam and Janice Oglesby's homestead
00:00:06is once again on the verge of collapse.
00:00:09You know, we talked about not quitting.
00:00:11There's times we thought about it.
00:00:12Five years ago, the Rainies found a cabin hanging on by a thread.
00:00:17The whole house moved that way.
00:00:19But since then, the Ozark homestead has grown.
00:00:23This is my lovely wife.
00:00:24And new life-threatening challenges along with it.
00:00:27In that upstairs bedroom, the bed is tilted.
00:00:30I would be devastated that her house would collapse.
00:00:34Now, I fell off the roof and broke my back.
00:00:38How far did you fall?
00:00:40Nine foot high.
00:00:41It hit concrete.
00:00:42This sent a lot of pain.
00:00:44In a race against weather and time,
00:00:47Quick, quick, quick!
00:00:48Marty must once and for all save not just one...
00:00:51Last winter, we didn't really haul water because it would freeze.
00:00:55But two off-grid families in this rugged wilderness.
00:00:59Let's go!
00:01:00Let's go!
00:01:00We're in the battleground.
00:01:02Mike, get back!
00:01:03Where's that big sweat?
00:01:04Four inches!
00:01:06Keep coming!
00:01:07Whoa!
00:01:07Whoa, you're pushing down the house!
00:01:08This cabin literally could fall any second.
00:01:12One, two, three!
00:01:17One!
00:01:22Last time that I rolled down this road, a young lady took me over to her cabin.
00:01:26Here's the problem.
00:01:28Half the house was connected to trees that moved and swayed in the wind.
00:01:31And we spent the better part of a week trying to get this house on a solid foundation.
00:01:37And I believe we fixed all of her problems.
00:01:40But something has gone wrong.
00:01:48I'm Janice Oglesby, and this is my husband, Samuel Oglesby.
00:01:52The rainiest visit last time was so amazing.
00:01:55They gave us a kind of infusion to our homestead.
00:01:58All the things they did just totally changed our lives.
00:02:01The whole time since they came and missed you to help me build the greenhouse,
00:02:04just every year my garden's gotten better and better.
00:02:06Matt built me a leather shop, which really took off.
00:02:09And I was so busy that I had my husband build me a store right next to it.
00:02:14They just gave me so much confidence.
00:02:16They inspired both of us just to keep going.
00:02:21But as their ambition grew, the Oglesby's failed to address the biggest issue facing their homestead.
00:02:28We love homesteading, but we didn't spend any time on the home at all.
00:02:32There was no time to do any of those things.
00:02:34We had a lot of rain, and so now we discover there's more problems with the cabin.
00:02:41Having such a big house with a 40-foot roof, all that rain is pouring off the back of the
00:02:47house.
00:02:47It even actually rained in the house.
00:02:49We've got a rotted beam that's actually holding up the house.
00:02:53It's causing the house to buckle in the back.
00:02:57Lacking the experience to manage the onslaught,
00:03:00one day their fate took a turn for the worse.
00:03:04Sam fell off a roof and broke his back.
00:03:09And the whole world stopped.
00:03:13Completely stopped.
00:03:15Sam is the provider.
00:03:16He is the leader of the home.
00:03:18And he could do nothing.
00:03:22All of a sudden, when Sam got hurt, I had to do everything on my own.
00:03:25And it was really, really hard.
00:03:29This, uh...
00:03:35It's been hard, huh?
00:03:37You know, we talked about not quitting, and there's times we thought about it.
00:03:41It's much different when your husband can go out and hunt and bring home food,
00:03:46and you work together, and you put it in a jar,
00:03:48and you put it in the pantry, and you're going to be okay.
00:03:51But all of a sudden, it's just me.
00:03:55And I can't do all those things all by myself.
00:03:58And we really needed family.
00:04:03So my son, Mike, moved here, built a cabin on the property, has a new wife.
00:04:08The two of them want to start a family on the homestead,
00:04:12but they've had a really hard nine months.
00:04:16Our cabin, like, long term, it's going to be a problem.
00:04:19There's just more than we can do.
00:04:21We need some help.
00:04:21So it's just become kind of like a nightmare for the last couple months.
00:04:26My mom and Sam, they're stuck.
00:04:29They're between a rock and a hard place.
00:04:31I would be devastated that her house would collapse.
00:04:34I don't know what to do.
00:04:36I'm at wit's end.
00:04:46Well, well, well.
00:04:48How are you, sir?
00:04:49Hey, Marty, how are you?
00:04:50Where's that crazy wife of yours?
00:04:55There she is.
00:04:57Did you miss me?
00:05:01I would never admit it, but I think I did in a way.
00:05:04Nice to see you again, Sam.
00:05:06And you!
00:05:07And who's that?
00:05:08This is my lovely wife.
00:05:09Hi.
00:05:10What's your name?
00:05:10Amanda.
00:05:11Amanda.
00:05:12Wow.
00:05:13So are you guys living here?
00:05:14We built a little tiny house over there on the other side of the property.
00:05:18A lot's happened since I've been gone.
00:05:20Our family's growing.
00:05:21And then I heard you had an injury.
00:05:23What's going on?
00:05:24What happened?
00:05:26Fell off the roof and broke my back.
00:05:29And how are you doing now with a broken back?
00:05:31I had another surgery in September.
00:05:32I'm just now getting where I don't have to walk with a cane.
00:05:35So he can pick up about 10 pounds still.
00:05:38He's still at the weight limit, but no cane, you know?
00:05:42I'm walking.
00:05:43He's walking.
00:05:44All right.
00:05:45I need to see with my own eyes what's gone wrong over there.
00:05:48Let's go.
00:05:49Let's go.
00:05:56So let me show you the house.
00:05:58Show me what's wrong with this place or what's right with it.
00:06:00Okay.
00:06:02So last time we were here, we had two big holes kind of in the side of the cabin just
00:06:06patched
00:06:06up and sliding glass.
00:06:07I've replaced all of those to try to get the house tighter and warmer.
00:06:10Mm-hmm.
00:06:11Beautiful thing to see.
00:06:12A transformation all done by the home setter since we left.
00:06:18I have to be honest with you.
00:06:20What am I doing here?
00:06:21Well, there's a couple things that you said to do or not to do, and we didn't listen.
00:06:26So here you are.
00:06:28Like?
00:06:28Like a big tree that you wanted to cut down, and you had cut down so many trees, I wanted
00:06:33to save this one tree.
00:06:37We were both wondering about this tree on the end here.
00:06:39We're getting more and more in the sun, so my question is, we have one tree left.
00:06:44Do we have to lose the tree, or can we just get disconnected from it?
00:06:48We have to do, we have to do, but we're more and more in the sun.
00:06:50We hid in the woods to stay cool.
00:06:52Okay.
00:06:52Now we're all exposed, we're in the sun, and that's the last tree.
00:06:58Does it have to go?
00:07:01Do you remember this tree?
00:07:03Oh, I do now, I remember.
00:07:04So when you wanted to cut this tree down, I insisted you didn't.
00:07:09So now it's a superhighway for animals.
00:07:14What kind of animals are we talking about?
00:07:16Squirrels.
00:07:16Rats.
00:07:17Squirrels, rats.
00:07:17Things that get into the house.
00:07:19All these animals, they're literally terrorizing.
00:07:22Look at, they're ripping all the paneling off the back of the house.
00:07:26Last time I was here, I didn't want to leave a tree that was much too close to the house.
00:07:30Besides animals getting into the house, it would rain down organics and the moisture and compromise the integrity of her
00:07:38home.
00:07:39So, you ever parked your car under a tree and it had that film on it?
00:07:44You're like, oh man.
00:07:45After one day, the tree for 10 years has been raining down, literally, organics, dripping off the leaves, sticking to
00:07:56the house, and it's not washing off.
00:07:58That entire house is capturing the moisture from the tree, frankly.
00:08:05Believe it or not, I do listen to all homesteaders.
00:08:08If they say, don't cut that tree, I won't.
00:08:11And Janice begged me to leave that tree.
00:08:13And I did.
00:08:15And guess what?
00:08:16I made a mistake.
00:08:19So what's going on right there with that bean?
00:08:21So the water's rotted and just broke this bean.
00:08:26It's just...
00:08:27Ants, termites, water.
00:08:31Do you see ants?
00:08:32Remember when I left here?
00:08:33There was 10 million of them.
00:08:34Yes.
00:08:34I thought we killed them all, but we didn't do anything with the bean.
00:08:37We just thought we killed the ants.
00:08:39The thing is, that's holding up the house, and you can tell when you're in that upstairs bedroom that the
00:08:43bed is tilted.
00:08:44This beam is also rotting.
00:08:47Here.
00:08:47This is part of the deck.
00:08:48It's got to be the water running off the...
00:08:50And, Marty, now, if you stand back, you can see the logs are bowing.
00:08:55The house has a bow.
00:08:59I see it.
00:09:00Wow.
00:09:02In five years' time, a beam rotted out.
00:09:05In five years' time, the side of this house has... is compromised with too much moisture.
00:09:12And that bowed wall is pretty insane.
00:09:15I'm not sure I've ever seen that.
00:09:17It is.
00:09:17It worries me.
00:09:17It worries me a lot.
00:09:19I get it.
00:09:20That's 12 Alarm, frankly, just like last time.
00:09:23In the next storm, I'm fully convinced that this house could topple over.
00:09:31So, that said, we'll get tools, we'll address that tree, and we're just going to have to get started.
00:09:37But, I think the first thing that has to happen is I'll look at your son's cabin.
00:09:42Okay.
00:09:49So, this is our small house.
00:09:54The hexagon got me the most square footage for the least amount of price.
00:09:59Hard to build.
00:10:00It was a lot harder to build.
00:10:02Just make sure you step right there, or else it'll wobble.
00:10:06It's kind of sketchy.
00:10:07So, every corner has a live-edged tree in it.
00:10:10I think the entire house is 270 square feet.
00:10:15A loft?
00:10:16I do, yep.
00:10:16That's our bedroom upstairs.
00:10:18That's our bedroom upstairs, yeah.
00:10:18So, it's the same size as this with a shorter roof.
00:10:21I wanted to build a very specific house that had an aesthetic in mind that I wanted to accomplish, and
00:10:26I felt like I got really close to that.
00:10:56But, it's very tiny.
00:10:58What's happening with water here?
00:10:59You're hauling it?
00:11:00Yeah, we haul it from way over there.
00:11:01We have no water here.
00:11:02You just bring buckets?
00:11:03Oh, yeah.
00:11:03Hauling it from where?
00:11:04Um, I don't know.
00:11:06It depends on the time of year.
00:11:08What's that mean?
00:11:09Last winter, last winter, we didn't really haul very much water in.
00:11:13Because?
00:11:14Because we, it would freeze, and so.
00:11:16Yeah, you can't use the water.
00:11:17Yeah, we don't have it.
00:11:18When it starts to get blows you, we can't use the water.
00:11:21So, we brush our teeth at work, or.
00:11:23Or, I brush my teeth with a bottle of water, you know.
00:11:26I think our biggest struggle with the cabin right now is just the utter lack of water in the house.
00:11:33Yeah.
00:11:33So, we don't have to pack water 500 yards from mom's now.
00:11:36Uh, we almost, uh, pushed back our wedding because I was afraid to get married to her because I didn't
00:11:43have running water in the house.
00:11:44He wasn't going to propose until he got running water.
00:11:46I'm very glad he didn't do that.
00:11:48So, your mom has a water source.
00:11:50Mm-hmm.
00:11:51And how far away is that from this cabin?
00:11:54Probably a thousand feet.
00:11:55Holy moly.
00:11:56Probably a thousand.
00:11:56Where?
00:11:59Right there.
00:11:59You can't see it because of the tree.
00:12:00Can you show me?
00:12:01I can, yes.
00:12:02Can you, can't, do you mind?
00:12:03Yeah.
00:12:03Show me where that is.
00:12:05As far as I know, the waterline burst, uh, last year or the year before in the winter.
00:12:09They just didn't have the money or resources to repair it, to replace it.
00:12:16So, you see the house in the woods over there.
00:12:18This is...
00:12:19What happened here?
00:12:20I don't know.
00:12:21This, uh, I think the pipe burst when it froze this last year.
00:12:25Doing everything that it takes to make a house work is, is, is difficult.
00:12:29You can't cook in the house.
00:12:31So, all winter, I'm out there grilling with the, you know, my coat pulled up and I'm trying
00:12:35to keep the grill lit.
00:12:36And then you have to wash dishes.
00:12:38You've got, like, a couple hours where it's not so cold.
00:12:40And before that, uh, ice water freezes your hands to wash dishes.
00:12:45We'll try to make sense of what we can attempt to do, because we only have four days, and
00:12:52every second counts.
00:12:54When you hear Mike and Amanda talk about how they want to raise a family on this 40 acres,
00:13:00I'm thinking Sam and Janice, Mike and Amanda, and kids, three generations of family off-grid.
00:13:07I mean, that's music to my ears.
00:13:08The question is, in four days' time, can we fix the trauma on Sam and Janice's cabin
00:13:15and have time to come and help out Mike and Amanda for now, and maybe, more importantly,
00:13:21for the future?
00:13:27Show me what you've been up to in the last five years, please.
00:13:30I wanted to build our own mining town, our own boom town.
00:13:33I get it, but you didn't call me down here to work on a gold mining-themed family camp.
00:13:48This is always the concern, fall in a tree next to the house.
00:13:52Come over here.
00:13:53You want to have the advantage away, and I don't see a lot of advantage away, and I don't like
00:13:59that.
00:14:01Deep in Missouri's Ozark Mountains, Marty Rainey faces an unnecessary foe.
00:14:07We've got a house that is extremely unstable and can fall right off on the ground.
00:14:12Five years ago, the Rainey's went all out to ensure the Oglesby's treehouse cabin was safe from the 50-foot
00:14:19trees ripping it apart.
00:14:20This is the way Rainey's homestead. Face the challenge head-on using whatever is at your disposal.
00:14:30But the family pleaded to keep one tree standing.
00:14:34The trees are going away one by one, right?
00:14:36Do we have to lose the last tree?
00:14:39Now...
00:14:40We're going to have to take the fence out.
00:14:41Okay.
00:14:42I can do all that. I've got all the equipment to do all that.
00:14:44The cabin is again needlessly in jeopardy by the last remaining tree.
00:14:49Get in there.
00:14:49And correcting this will pose a challenge.
00:14:52All right.
00:14:53To re-stabilize the Oglesby's buckling 20-ton cabin, Marty plans to first detach, then fell, the 60-foot tree
00:15:02threatening the cabin's foundation.
00:15:05Next, he'll use Jax to lift the foundation off its posts, reinforcing any weakened beams and removing those that have
00:15:13been rotted out completely.
00:15:15Finally, he'll upgrade the foundation with a new 16-foot beam made from an upcycled telephone pole.
00:15:25You can kind of see it's leaning towards the house, so...
00:15:29Leaning towards the house. So how do we get an advantage to have it fall, lean away from the house?
00:15:34Wedges.
00:15:35Ah, do you have any?
00:15:36Yes.
00:15:37You do? Get them. I'll start making this undercut.
00:15:39I think when Marty first got here, he's seen an immediate threat. Like, the tree just has to go, you
00:15:44know?
00:15:44And honestly, it had to go five years ago, but my mom just had to have it.
00:15:55Rip that out of there, please. Quick, quick, quick. Back to business here.
00:16:03After five years of the tree growing and destroying my house, as I start to watch the tree come down,
00:16:10didn't know if it was going to take somebody out, knock the last post of the house out,
00:16:14and the house was going to come down.
00:16:15All right, now, a wedge and a hammer, please.
00:16:19Get that started in the back.
00:16:21No, go.
00:16:24Go!
00:16:26Okay, she's moving!
00:16:28Go! Get out of here!
00:16:30Go! Go!
00:16:31Mike!
00:16:33Mike, get back!
00:16:39Can I take a breath?
00:16:40Couldn't have done it without the wedges, that's for sure.
00:16:42Oh.
00:16:43We'll get the excavator or skid steer back here.
00:16:46We'll source this.
00:16:46We'll set it aside for firewood.
00:16:48Perfect.
00:16:48If we have time, we'll cut it into firewood.
00:16:50Meanwhile, I feel much better.
00:16:52I feel much better in the wind and the storm and the crazy that the tree's down.
00:17:03As day two begins...
00:17:05Let's talk.
00:17:05Good morning.
00:17:06...before work starts on either of the two failing cabins,
00:17:11Sam and Janice show off their most ambitious addition to the homestead.
00:17:16Show me what you've been up to in the last five years, please.
00:17:19It's amazing that it's been five years since the Rainies were here last.
00:17:24There's problems with the cabin, but we definitely want Marty to look around
00:17:29and see all that the two of us have accomplished here.
00:17:32Hold on, hold on.
00:17:33What's going on?
00:17:34I want to tell you about a huge dream I have for this land.
00:17:39I wanted to build our own mining town, our own boom town.
00:17:46So, behind this fence, this sign, there's a boom town?
00:17:50A dream.
00:17:50A dream of a boom town.
00:17:51A start.
00:17:52A start.
00:17:53Want to see?
00:17:54Of course.
00:17:54Okay, come on.
00:17:56It seems that Sam and Janice have been in the process of turning this 40 acres into a theme park.
00:18:05I see kids weaving their way through a tunnel with a mining cap and a bucket and a full of
00:18:11sand
00:18:11over to an essay office and a sluice and a water tank, and they're sifting.
00:18:16They're sifting for pyrite.
00:18:46It's fascinating.
00:18:48It's an old-school tool you can imagine.
00:18:50It's hanging on the wall or laying in a bucket.
00:18:53Yes, it's cool, but we've got bigger problems on this homestead.
00:18:57I get it, but you didn't call me down here to work on a gold mining theme family camp.
00:19:06I did not.
00:19:07You're dreaming big.
00:19:09You're dreaming big, real big, but at the same time, there's a house that needs help.
00:19:18You've got to love the energy that Janice has put into Boomtown.
00:19:23But here's the thing, I don't want the homestead to go bust because all of the efforts and resources
00:19:29and time is spent on Boomtown.
00:19:33It's boom or bust.
00:19:46Later that morning.
00:19:47So we got this guy on the ground.
00:19:49That's actually a pretty good sign.
00:19:51Count our blessings off to a good start.
00:19:53Yes, that's good.
00:19:54Marty and the family begin the process of stabilizing the main cabin, utilizing every resource at their disposal.
00:20:03I got me an old toolbox look inside there.
00:20:06Oh, that's so cool.
00:20:08Full of old antique hand tools.
00:20:12The real deal.
00:20:13Don't get hurt with that.
00:20:14Wow.
00:20:15And then look at this.
00:20:16I got a couple railroad jocks.
00:20:19This.
00:20:19Nice.
00:20:20Yeah.
00:20:21It's going to lift a lot of weight, and that's a good thing.
00:20:24We're going to try to pick this building up.
00:20:26Oh, my.
00:20:27So that we can address these rotten beams.
00:20:29We got sagging posts.
00:20:32We got the same thing basically saw five years ago.
00:20:36In the first rescue, Marty saw the alarming signs of a cabin on the verge of collapse.
00:20:43What's happening here?
00:20:44This building is slanted.
00:20:46This door is really hard to open and shut.
00:20:48That was kind of the indication that something was going on.
00:20:50You could feel what an incredible slant.
00:20:54This entire building is slanted.
00:20:57It's sloped.
00:20:57Welcome to the leaning tower of Ginny.
00:21:02So many things are done right, and it's so quaint, and it's so cool.
00:21:07But the most critical, important part of your house is your foundation.
00:21:11The problem isn't inside the house.
00:21:14It's under the house.
00:21:16This is one of the main supports of the house.
00:21:20Cameraman, get out from underneath there.
00:21:23Seriously.
00:21:24I mean, that looks really dangerous to me.
00:21:26I mean, that's serious business.
00:21:29Look at that.
00:21:30I know.
00:21:31More than 50% of this house is bolted to a tree that sways and moves and grows.
00:21:40Catastrophe.
00:21:41You have an unsafe home.
00:21:43This is the most dangerous thing I've ever seen.
00:21:45And it's only a matter of one or two storms, a lot of movement on the trees,
00:21:49and this whole thing's going to break off like an iceberg.
00:21:54We've got to fix it somehow.
00:21:57Now.
00:21:59All right.
00:22:00The decaying supports signal an even more imminent collapse.
00:22:05Marty must first stabilize the structure before addressing its rotting support beam.
00:22:10See if this jack will work.
00:22:12We're going to try to use a train jack that might have been used 100 years ago.
00:22:17I've reached that point where I'm getting a little nervous.
00:22:21Getting sketchy.
00:22:22Let's try that bar, please.
00:22:24Where did you find this?
00:22:25I've been using it to put fence in.
00:22:27This bar is amazing.
00:22:30This bar probably could bend.
00:22:32Let's not get our heads near it.
00:22:33Sure.
00:22:34Ready?
00:22:35One, two, three.
00:22:39That's a long ways up there.
00:22:40Yeah.
00:22:41Okay.
00:22:42Okay.
00:22:42Me and you.
00:22:43Ready?
00:22:44Ready?
00:22:46Okay.
00:22:48See it coming off that beam right there?
00:22:50All right.
00:22:50Let's go on.
00:22:52Clint, what do you think?
00:22:52I think we can go another one.
00:22:54What do you think?
00:22:56Yeah.
00:22:57Yeah.
00:22:58Hesitating?
00:22:59A little bit.
00:23:00Okay.
00:23:01Appreciate the honesty.
00:23:02Let's go.
00:23:02Me and you, sir.
00:23:03Everybody ready?
00:23:05Slowly.
00:23:06Ready?
00:23:06One, two, three.
00:23:08Oh!
00:23:09Whoa!
00:23:09Whoa!
00:23:09You're pushing on the house!
00:23:21We're kind of in it right now, where there's no margin for error.
00:23:28Stop!
00:23:29Let's go.
00:23:29Me and you, sir.
00:23:30Ready?
00:23:31One, two, roll.
00:23:33Whoa!
00:23:33Whoa!
00:23:33You're pushing on the house!
00:23:36We're going for it.
00:23:37You ready?
00:23:38Yeah, I'm ready.
00:23:39Slowly.
00:23:40I think we can go another one.
00:23:43A little bit further.
00:23:44One, two, three.
00:23:46Whoa!
00:23:50Oh!
00:23:51Oh!
00:23:52I like it.
00:23:53Wedge it, please.
00:23:54Wedge it, please.
00:23:57Oh, so much.
00:23:59It's just so much.
00:24:01It's the whole house.
00:24:02We'll come on there.
00:24:04All right.
00:24:04We're just enough.
00:24:06Watching the house that I built.
00:24:09Let's shim that.
00:24:10It's hard.
00:24:11We have to stand back and, you know, watch and wait.
00:24:15You know?
00:24:16It's hard.
00:24:17It's really hard.
00:24:18Young lady, come in here.
00:24:19Quickly.
00:24:21You come here.
00:24:22You have to see what's going on.
00:24:24You see what's going on?
00:24:25What's going on?
00:24:26You're lifting the whole house.
00:24:27Yeah, get over here, please.
00:24:28So what we're going to do, we'll worry about getting it level and all that later.
00:24:32We just want to get up for now.
00:24:34Get it close.
00:24:34Out there, probably an inch.
00:24:36Right here, about three-eighths.
00:24:39And we'll just shim and go until something goes wrong.
00:24:45Okay.
00:24:45Fair enough.
00:24:46We're going to do the same thing over here under this board.
00:24:48Quickly, quickly.
00:24:50We're going to, about this far back, need a flat spot.
00:24:54Put a log in another jack, and we're going to, you know, I don't believe in luck, but it
00:24:59looks like we're holding together.
00:25:08Get lost, please.
00:25:11Let's roll it over there, me and you.
00:25:15Don, me and you.
00:25:20Ooh!
00:25:22Can you guys get this centered and leveled?
00:25:24Young lady, you know what to do.
00:25:26Almost.
00:25:26A little more this way.
00:25:27A little more this way.
00:25:29I think that'll work.
00:25:31That's good.
00:25:32Please get it level.
00:25:33I want it flat as a pancake, please.
00:25:36Flatter than a fritter.
00:25:38Okay.
00:25:39Well, we can't get rocks under it unless we lift it.
00:25:42After looking at the fact that these rotting beams under the house are taking more of my
00:25:47time than I expected, Mike and Amanda, you can see they're invested, they're workers, they're
00:25:53smart.
00:25:53That looks good.
00:25:55Where's that 20-ton jack, please?
00:25:58Hey, young lady.
00:25:59Since you guys have done everything over here so far, you're going to jack it up.
00:26:04So why not ramp up their skill set?
00:26:07Because a confident homesteader is a competent homesteader.
00:26:13Okay, I'm just going to sit here and watch for a second.
00:26:17You guys got it.
00:26:19So you'll go in like this.
00:26:20This is how you go up.
00:26:25There you go.
00:26:26Good job.
00:26:28Amanda is doing great.
00:26:29She's been a trooper.
00:26:30You're lifting up the whole house.
00:26:31See it?
00:26:33Having her here around all this stuff has definitely pushed her out of her comfort zone.
00:26:37I'm really proud of her.
00:26:40Stop right there.
00:26:41Now, let's talk a little bit.
00:26:45We've got kind of a dangerous thing going on.
00:26:49The house now, at least this portion of it, is sitting on two jacks.
00:26:52All right?
00:26:53So is this earthquake country or...?
00:26:55It can be, yes.
00:26:57It is?
00:26:59The San Madrid Fault, part of the new Madrid Seismic Zone, is an active fault system that
00:27:05runs from northeastern Arkansas through southeastern Missouri, covering 150 miles.
00:27:12The fault was responsible for a series of quakes in 1812 that were some of the strongest in
00:27:17U.S. history, reshaping the landscape of the region, including the Mississippi River.
00:27:25You guys are in Tornado Alley and earthquake country?
00:27:29I'm pretty sure we just had an earthquake recently, within the last month, maybe.
00:27:33The San Madrid fault line comes right.
00:27:34For real?
00:27:34Yeah, yeah.
00:27:35Well, let's pray the San Madrid fault line stays calm until we get some beams in here.
00:27:41I've got to find these beams.
00:27:44We are working right on top of the San Madrid fault, and here we are jacking up a house.
00:27:52We're going to leave it on the jacks.
00:27:53I don't want to leave it on the jacks, but we have to source the right beams and support
00:27:58this house with the correct cribbing before we let the jacks back down.
00:28:11As day three begins on the Oglesby's 40-acre Missouri homestead,
00:28:16Let's go.
00:28:17Quick, quick, quick!
00:28:18Marty makes a troubling discovery.
00:28:27Look above it, how rodded.
00:28:30All right, so this problem's worse than we thought.
00:28:36How long ago did you build this house?
00:28:39Maybe eight years ago.
00:28:40So this is tragic.
00:28:42In eight years' time, if your house is rotting away, something's wrong.
00:28:46Okay?
00:28:47Yes.
00:28:47In five years, whatever was going on is worse, to the point where now we have a real problem.
00:28:53The next thing I need to know, I'm looking at a...
00:28:57Drain pipe from the shower.
00:28:58Drain pipe from a shower.
00:29:00Do you use this shower?
00:29:01We do.
00:29:01Is it draining on the ground?
00:29:03It is.
00:29:03That's not even sanitary.
00:29:06I'm just going to say it.
00:29:08We are going to hook up that two-inch drain from the shower, from the tub, to that sewer line,
00:29:14right?
00:29:15Perfect.
00:29:15But I'm thinking it would take me on my own, with all the pieces here, I'm thinking I could do
00:29:22it in 15 minutes.
00:29:28Now, why isn't it done?
00:29:32None of this should have happened.
00:29:34And please don't let anything ever leak.
00:29:37A sink, a faucet, a shower, a tub, anything.
00:29:40Because that little leak over eight years is the beginning of what could be a disaster.
00:29:48The long list of challenges on this homestead keeps getting longer.
00:29:54Freaking disaster.
00:29:56The next few days are going to be the most challenging.
00:30:00Without water, it's just so difficult to make anything happen.
00:30:03What would it mean to you if you could walk in there and turn on water?
00:30:06It would change our lives completely.
00:30:08We're going to see if you guys are interested in...
00:30:23Let's talk.
00:30:24We're looking at a full-blown, raging, 12-alarm disaster, as far as I'm concerned.
00:30:30As we peeled back boards and saw completely rotten beams and lumber, I realized that this cabin literally could fall
00:30:38any second.
00:30:40I'm going to be honest with you.
00:30:42I did buy some material.
00:30:44I did have some plans on building stuff.
00:30:47But this is more crazy, dangerous, and involved than I thought.
00:30:51I don't want this building to go like this.
00:30:53And there's not a lot of structural anymore because the bottom's right on that, right?
00:30:57We're going to scrape that foam out of the way.
00:31:00Then we're going to sheet this building right here.
00:31:03We're going to make sure the end of that plywood is up against those logs.
00:31:06And once we do, all these logs that can flex and fail will be bound together with a sheet of
00:31:14plywood.
00:31:14Right?
00:31:15That's the plan.
00:31:18Marty's simple but effective plywood fix will keep the cabin stable while they install and level the new beams.
00:31:26Here we go!
00:31:27When the Rainies righted the foundation five years ago, they relied on another simple but effective bit of homestead ingenuity.
00:31:36Teeter-totter, teeter-totter, teeter-totter!
00:31:38The house is actually trying to rock and fall off of the existing good posts.
00:31:44See that gap?
00:31:45That's because this whole thing's going...
00:31:50It's totally, completely insane, and it's going to take a totally, completely insane person to fix it.
00:31:58My dad!
00:31:59Slow and steady, no margin for error.
00:32:03Yep!
00:32:07We're there.
00:32:08We're there.
00:32:08We're there.
00:32:10Okay, we're going to let it down.
00:32:12Break out that water level, please.
00:32:15Good!
00:32:18What did I tap into to fix this major cluster of a problem?
00:32:24A single playground apparatus.
00:32:28Which one?
00:32:31The teeter-totter.
00:32:33Yeah!
00:32:35Look at that!
00:32:36We're right...
00:32:37It's on the nuts.
00:32:39Nice, nice!
00:32:40The house is level.
00:32:43My house is level.
00:32:44The very best post that we could put under this cabin is right here, because of its longevity factor.
00:32:52Hedge.
00:32:53It's better than cedar, and it's better than locust.
00:32:55It'll be on concrete, on a piece of rebar, and it will be protected from all the elements.
00:33:05I want to spin it into place.
00:33:06Please come over there.
00:33:09Yep, I like it.
00:33:11I love it.
00:33:12Don't be shy.
00:33:14We're good.
00:33:14This building's...
00:33:15We own this building now.
00:33:17Get some screws and pin this down, please.
00:33:19A very dangerous structure, swaying and moving, creaking and popping, is now stable.
00:33:24It's beautiful!
00:33:26And it will be in that position, firmly implanted for eternity.
00:33:31Give that a big hug.
00:33:35Your dream has just been regrounded, if you will.
00:33:43Up and over, set it on those beams that are sticking out.
00:33:46Now, with the cabin hanging in the balance, Marty, Mike, and Amanda move quickly to reinforce the crumbling walls.
00:33:56This perimeter's kind of important, because what we're trying to do, we'll put another sheet here.
00:34:00We'll put one on top, and the idea is to make this wall strong so it can't go like this.
00:34:07Because there's no support, right?
00:34:09Mm-hmm.
00:34:09Okay, don't be shy.
00:34:10Grab another screw.
00:34:13Very, very good.
00:34:14We're gonna need it up here in a minute.
00:34:21While work continues on the main cabin,
00:34:25Marty pulls Mike and Amanda aside to discuss a new development on their homestead.
00:34:31When I came to the homestead, I had no idea I was gonna be meeting you.
00:34:34Yeah.
00:34:34I didn't know you existed.
00:34:36And I didn't even know this guy had a house here.
00:34:38Right?
00:34:38Yeah.
00:34:39And so, uh, we're going to see if you guys are interested in a water line.
00:34:49Buried two feet deep.
00:34:51Yeah.
00:34:51We'll put in a spigot, cross-free, and we'll introduce water to this cabin under pressure.
00:34:58What would it mean to you if you could walk in there and turn on water?
00:35:02It would mean a lot.
00:35:03It would change our lives completely.
00:35:05Without water, it's just so difficult to make anything happen.
00:35:08We want to have kids and we want to be able to take care of them and to keep them
00:35:12clean and to keep them healthy.
00:35:14And it just seems impossible without water.
00:35:17But this has just changed everything.
00:35:19It's just changed everything.
00:35:19In the short time we've been in Missouri, while Kai was looking for some telephone poles or beams to shore
00:35:26up your mom's house, there was a guy that had beams.
00:35:31And then he started asking, what are you guys doing?
00:35:34And, uh, when they brought the beams over, you know, he looked around and he said, what can I do
00:35:40to help?
00:35:41So that gentleman's walking over here right now.
00:35:45He is actually your neighbor.
00:35:47Oh, yeah?
00:35:47And he's bringing his own excavator to dig this water line.
00:35:52What's happening, Mark?
00:35:53Kai.
00:35:53Hi.
00:35:54Introduced to these guys.
00:35:55Hey, this is Justin.
00:35:56He's here to help us out.
00:35:58Out of the woodwork, when this happens in Montana or Missouri or Virginia, it happens all the time.
00:36:04And it reminds me that good people are out there.
00:36:08And so you guys can talk about that water line.
00:36:11You four.
00:36:11I'll go back to work over there.
00:36:12You guys got it covered.
00:36:15I've noticed something out here in rural America that happens all the time.
00:36:22Neighbor does help neighbor.
00:36:25I don't have a clue who Justin is or where he came from, but I know this.
00:36:31Somewhere along his life, he learned this.
00:36:34There's more happiness in giving than there is in receiving.
00:36:42Sam, sit down.
00:36:44Sit down, please.
00:36:46Sam, he's on the sidelines.
00:36:49Just had a lot of pain.
00:36:50Okay.
00:36:50And he can't help.
00:36:51So he's feeling...
00:36:52And it's driving me crazy not being able to get in there and help.
00:36:54I'm a worker.
00:36:55I want to work.
00:36:59I'm still a heel.
00:37:08How's it going?
00:37:09Making progress.
00:37:10You can't tell me you're all the way.
00:37:12Darn near.
00:37:14On the Oglesby's homestead in southwest Missouri...
00:37:17How deep are you?
00:37:18About three feet.
00:37:19I like your style.
00:37:20Appreciate it.
00:37:21Efforts to reinforce the main cabin continue.
00:37:24About the skid steer with a backhoe attachment?
00:37:27Yes.
00:37:28Get that one.
00:37:29Get it over there, honey.
00:37:30Good.
00:37:31Let's go!
00:37:31While build crew member Kai, along with neighbor Justin, pushed to complete a vital waterline
00:37:37to Mike and Amanda's cabin.
00:37:39We dig a trench right to here and have the waterline sticking out.
00:37:43Does that work?
00:37:44I think so.
00:37:45When I showed up here in Missouri, I had no idea that Mike and Amanda had already built
00:37:50a home, but for me, the number one problem on the homestead is Denise and Sam's cabin.
00:37:56I'm hoping that Mike and Amanda can take care of their cabin on the backside of the property.
00:38:02How long?
00:38:05Okay.
00:38:06Let's talk a little bit.
00:38:07Where's your kitchen at?
00:38:07Yeah, so my long-term plan, we're gonna pull the porch out.
00:38:10I want a sink on the other side of this window, right where my countertop is, and then I
00:38:15want to build an outdoor kitchen right here.
00:38:17Okay, so your water source, how far away is that from this cabin?
00:38:20Probably 1,000 feet.
00:38:22And it looks like you can get here.
00:38:24Yes.
00:38:27With the treehouse cabin his primary concern, Marty must rely on Mike's off-grid skills to
00:38:34connect the 1,000-foot waterline.
00:38:37The good news.
00:38:3812 by 20, right?
00:38:39Yes.
00:38:40On the first rescue, Matt helped Mike gain confidence in his skill set when laying the
00:38:45foundation to a new workshop.
00:38:48I know it's not as big as what you guys had initially planned out, but this is big.
00:38:54What you guys had out here was massive.
00:38:57We got a good footprint.
00:38:59Let's get the materials out.
00:39:00We'll start laying it in place.
00:39:02We're laying out our flooring, right?
00:39:05You ever done any framing?
00:39:06No.
00:39:06All of our joists.
00:39:08I'm sure the board's running basically in between our box.
00:39:11Yeah.
00:39:12The ones that fill in all the gaps and add all the structural support.
00:39:16All the joists are together.
00:39:17All I need now is a foundation.
00:39:20Some posts on the ground that aren't going to rot.
00:39:22Keep this thing up off the ground and super sturdy.
00:39:26I've been able to source this local tree called Osage Orange, what the locals call hedge.
00:39:32And it's great for fencing.
00:39:34It's great for foundations.
00:39:35And it's really what's going to keep this shop in the ground and sturdy for years to come.
00:39:40All these posts are all leveled, but here's the moment of truth.
00:39:44Is this going to sit on there perfectly?
00:39:46I think it will.
00:39:47We might have to fudge it around, but we're not going to know until we try.
00:39:50So let's lift it.
00:39:51Is it heavy for you?
00:39:53I'm strong.
00:39:55Look at me.
00:39:56Okay.
00:39:58I'm on this corner.
00:40:01Okay.
00:40:01Hold on, guys.
00:40:02Is it level?
00:40:04This is perfect.
00:40:05I say we start laying down this deck.
00:40:07Hopefully we can have this thing sheeted and maybe stand a wall up before the day's over
00:40:10because time is ticking.
00:40:12We only have so much time left.
00:40:13I got Mike working side by side with me.
00:40:17And he's got a strong back.
00:40:18He's fast.
00:40:19He's smart.
00:40:20And that's what it's going to take because we have so much work to do and not any time
00:40:25to do it.
00:40:30Okay.
00:40:31So we'll not compromise your foundation.
00:40:33Please.
00:40:33We'll come right in here.
00:40:34I think that I've got plenty of work down there.
00:40:38Young lady, how do you guys feel about putting in your own water line?
00:40:41Yeah.
00:40:42I've never done it before, so I don't really, but I'm, you know, we'll figure it out.
00:40:46We can do it.
00:40:46What'd you say?
00:40:47We'll figure it out.
00:40:48Ah.
00:40:49See you later.
00:40:50Get on it.
00:40:51Get on it.
00:40:52Good.
00:40:53So this one's only buried 18 inches.
00:40:56You'll want to build this area up a little bit.
00:40:58So it does add another foot of dirt above it.
00:41:00So we won't have to worry about it freezing if we like...
00:41:03If you build it up and put things in here, so.
00:41:06It'll unroll.
00:41:07There we go.
00:41:08When I think about trying to raise kids in the house without water, I just can't imagine,
00:41:13like, changing diapers and cleaning up, you know, the mess that they make.
00:41:17I just can't imagine doing it in our current setting.
00:41:19You want to just keep all those coils unrolling.
00:41:24We have to walk up a hill a thousand feet with two five and a half gallon water containers,
00:41:29and we're doing it every week because washing dishes and cooking.
00:41:32I just figured we just keep going until we've figured it out.
00:41:36And if I have to carry water up until the kids are old enough to carry their own water,
00:41:41then that's what the plan was.
00:41:42It'd be great to have an actual working kitchen in the house, cook in our kitchen,
00:41:47wash dishes in the kitchen, brush our teeth in the kitchen.
00:41:50I think that'd be a really big help.
00:41:53All right.
00:41:54So what's the next step?
00:41:56We'll pat it, make it a nice good spot for it so that way we're not on this rock,
00:41:59since it is Missouri and we do have rocks.
00:42:01Yeah.
00:42:02Let's do it.
00:42:07Let's go.
00:42:09Over at the main cabin, as Marty and the family push to repair and fortify the failing structure...
00:42:16You want that beam on there?
00:42:17I don't.
00:42:18You do.
00:42:19...they make final adjustments to the new support beam before installation.
00:42:24Sam, sit down.
00:42:26Sit down, please.
00:42:29There's a lot of work to do, but I can't help but feel empathy for Sam.
00:42:37He's a good man, he's a good husband, he's a good provider, and he's a good worker.
00:42:43But, he's on the sidelines.
00:42:46What's going on over here, please?
00:42:48Just, just in a lot of pain.
00:42:49Okay.
00:42:50And he can't help, so he's feeling...
00:42:52Driving me crazy not being able to get in there and help too, so...
00:42:54I understand, but listen.
00:42:56I told you this yesterday.
00:42:57Listen carefully.
00:42:59Somebody put a porch on that in the last five years.
00:43:02Oh, you.
00:43:04Somebody was putting on that green board up there.
00:43:07What?
00:43:0830 feet in the air?
00:43:10Oh, you.
00:43:11So, I know you want to get in here right now and, you know, get dirty and get crazy, but
00:43:16just pace yourself.
00:43:17Yes.
00:43:18Marty being back, I feel like I haven't done as much as I should.
00:43:23Sam needs to rest, and we can do this.
00:43:26Copy that.
00:43:27That's what we're going to do.
00:43:29It's tough watching them do all the work, and I can't do a whole lot.
00:43:33I've had to sit down a lot.
00:43:34I've had some pain, and I'm a worker.
00:43:36I want to work.
00:43:42I'm still healing, but I'm going to come back.
00:43:46And we're going to hit it again and not give up, you know?
00:43:54Sit it long ways.
00:43:56So what are we doing?
00:43:57Come up a little bit.
00:44:00Hey, stop everything.
00:44:02How are you going to roll that log?
00:44:03I want that flat surface on top, right?
00:44:05Okay.
00:44:06How are you going to do it?
00:44:07This is called a cant hook.
00:44:08You ready?
00:44:09Flat side up.
00:44:11It's for loggers.
00:44:14A log canting hook, or cant hook, is a log turning device developed in the mid-19th century when logging
00:44:22expanded in North America during the Industrial Revolution.
00:44:25The term canted refers to logs that have been squared on one side, and early loggers used these hooks to
00:44:32turn the logs for milling.
00:44:35Cant hooks are still used today, particularly in areas with rugged terrain that large machines can't access.
00:44:43What is this called?
00:44:45Uh, can hook.
00:44:47Cant.
00:44:48You got it.
00:44:49Quickly!
00:44:51I can tell.
00:44:52Its real name is cant.
00:44:53Oh, I know.
00:44:54But you said cant.
00:44:55Yeah.
00:44:55You knew it was cant?
00:44:56I did.
00:44:57And you were, like, joking?
00:44:58Yeah.
00:44:59That's so good.
00:44:59I do okay.
00:45:00But we don't have time for jokes.
00:45:02Of course.
00:45:02So, if, I'd love you to roll this log if you can't.
00:45:07You got it.
00:45:08Quickly!
00:45:10I can tell in five minutes or less if I'm working with a good man.
00:45:16They don't have to be the smartest guy in the room, but they've got to be listening, and I'm more
00:45:23than confident that Mike is a good man.
00:45:32We're gonna break these off.
00:45:34We're gonna put that bean back under that subfloor.
00:45:36But these are in the way.
00:45:37You know what's going on.
00:45:40Okay.
00:45:40We're gonna actually come back here, too.
00:45:42I don't like the sound of this.
00:45:44Knock on wood.
00:45:47What's going on with that bean?
00:45:50I don't know how they get the holes in Swiss cheese blocks, but I do know how you get holes
00:45:56in the beans under your house.
00:45:59Insects.
00:45:59Do you see ants?
00:46:01Nope.
00:46:03I think I remember on the last day I was here, I pulled the plywood back.
00:46:06There was 10 million ants.
00:46:09I gotta tell you, I'm not happy.
00:46:10By the way, there's a lot of ants here.
00:46:14Is that common here?
00:46:15Yes.
00:46:16Are they poisonous?
00:46:18I don't think so.
00:46:20That's a lot of ants.
00:46:22Do they bite?
00:46:23Yes, they do.
00:46:26Remember when I left here?
00:46:27There was 10 million of them.
00:46:27Yes.
00:46:28We poisoned them all.
00:46:29So you got rid of them?
00:46:30We got rid of them.
00:46:31I'm not sure that Sam is convinced there's still ants and termites eating away at their foundation.
00:46:38But I'm convinced they're still there.
00:46:42See the holes in this insulation looks like Swiss cheese.
00:46:46Right?
00:46:47Yeah.
00:46:48Looks like Swiss cheese.
00:46:49Things born around in here.
00:46:52All right, we still have, what's that thing right there?
00:46:57Woodroach.
00:46:58So, we got a woodroach.
00:46:59What's that right there?
00:47:00Woodroach.
00:47:01Good.
00:47:01What are these?
00:47:03Big black carpenter ants.
00:47:05Okay.
00:47:05This guy's carrying eggs.
00:47:07That's great.
00:47:08So he's going to some little ant colony somewhere.
00:47:20What are these?
00:47:22Big black carpenter ants.
00:47:24So here you go.
00:47:25Just, you know, this is the proof, right?
00:47:28Here's some evidence that you got termites and ants, rotten boards and water.
00:47:32In the insulation.
00:47:35Well, they're just trying to hit the wood.
00:47:38You told me you got rid of the ants, you didn't.
00:47:41Marty finds evidence that water damage isn't the only culprit threatening to take down Sam and Janice's cabin.
00:47:49Let's talk.
00:47:52That little ant right there and his buddies did basically enough damage here to destroy this place.
00:48:04I don't think it would go, maybe another year, but you have a lot of storms here, right?
00:48:09We do have a lot.
00:48:09So all this craziness and all this movement, you know, something could have happened that, on this corner that could
00:48:16have been pretty bad.
00:48:18I think if we would have waited any more time, I think the house, so overwhelming.
00:48:28It's so overwhelming.
00:48:29I just was crying my eyes out because I felt helpless and transparent and exposed and I couldn't fix it
00:48:36myself.
00:48:41The only thing I want to hear is did we learn a lesson?
00:48:43Yes.
00:48:43Did we learn a lesson?
00:48:44Yes.
00:48:44Yeah.
00:48:45I learned a lesson.
00:48:46Okay?
00:48:47And that's all I need to, that's all I want to say.
00:48:49And now let's see if we can beat these ants.
00:48:52Yeah.
00:48:52Okay?
00:48:55I peeled away a little bit of the spray foam insulation and there they were.
00:49:00Millions of ants, some termites and bugs I've never seen before in my life.
00:49:07All right, so when I see people use urethane in the floor, that's amazing, this is really cool.
00:49:14But this urethane shows us just how much bug, ant, termite, whatever activity there is.
00:49:21There's a labyrinth, a maze of bugs just trying to get to the house through the urethane to try to
00:49:28eat and, you know, destroy this house.
00:49:33Burrowing bugs, such as termites and ants, dig complex tunnel systems to protect the colony from predators and allow a
00:49:42safe environment for nesting and food storage.
00:49:45Once a colony is established, termites can spread throughout a house in just a few months, threatening its structural integrity.
00:49:52It's estimated that termites cause over $5 billion of damage a year, affecting more than 600,000 U.S. homes.
00:50:03So this is a combination of ants, termites, and water.
00:50:13All right, so family, get in here, every member.
00:50:16Where's Kai?
00:50:17We're going to see if we can fog this.
00:50:19He's going to start right now trying to schedule an appointment to fog this.
00:50:24As the crew makes arrangements to fumigate the home for bugs.
00:50:28Holy!
00:50:29Ah!
00:50:30Ah!
00:50:31I don't like bugs.
00:50:34Marty brings Mike and Amanda up to their cabin to discuss the state of the water line.
00:50:40As you guys can see, we're getting closer and closer to introducing water in the kitchen.
00:50:46We're running out of time.
00:50:47If you need anything, you've got to let me know and we'll do what we can to help you.
00:50:51What do you guys really need?
00:50:54We're in probably the most, the biggest thing is an outhouse right now.
00:50:57The outhouse that we were using, which is like a mile away, it's shut down right now and so we
00:51:01have to walk all the way over to his mom's to use the bathroom.
00:51:04And when it's pouring rain, you can't really do anything cause you're going to get soaked.
00:51:08You ever read that book?
00:51:11No.
00:51:12What book?
00:51:13Forty Yards to the Outhouse.
00:51:15No, I haven't.
00:51:16It was written by Willie Make It and illustrated by Betty Won't.
00:51:24So, how about showing me a place that's closer and we'll build an outhouse.
00:51:29Awesome.
00:51:29Okay.
00:51:30Fair enough?
00:51:30Yeah.
00:51:31All right.
00:51:31Where are we doing it?
00:51:33We'll go right around this.
00:51:34Sure, sure.
00:51:36All right.
00:51:37So, usually outhouses are three by three, four by four, about six feet deep.
00:51:43Now that you have water, it would not take much in time for you to have an indoor flushing toilet.
00:51:51But in the meantime, a nice clean outhouse structure hopefully will suffice.
00:51:56We'll have Clint dig a hole, but I have a rule.
00:51:59Okay.
00:52:01Any nice young couple that says, hey, we need an outhouse, quite frankly, has to build their own outhouse.
00:52:08Awesome.
00:52:08Okay.
00:52:09Fair enough?
00:52:09Yeah.
00:52:10Can you?
00:52:10Yeah, you can trust us to build our own outhouse.
00:52:13Yes.
00:52:13Get on it.
00:52:14Grab some tools.
00:52:15Let's do it.
00:52:15Hit it.
00:52:16A new outhouse will make the homestead more livable for the young couple.
00:52:22But during their last visit, Mike and Matt focused on a new shop to make the homestead more viable for
00:52:29Janice.
00:52:30I would get a little further to the left, baby.
00:52:32If it gets heavy, grunting helps.
00:52:35Okay.
00:52:35And the more it sounds like you're in pain, the better.
00:52:39Okay.
00:52:40Janice's workshop is a shed they actually rent.
00:52:43If we build a workshop ourselves, that's extra money that they're not going to be spending on that shed that
00:52:49they can actually use to improve this homestead.
00:52:52All right?
00:52:52All right.
00:52:53Here we go.
00:52:54Okay.
00:52:55Three, two, one.
00:52:56Ah!
00:52:58Ah!
00:53:00Ah!
00:53:01Ah!
00:53:02Ah!
00:53:02Ah!
00:53:03Ah!
00:53:04Sweet.
00:53:10Yeah, this is really going to help her now, because now her business can grow, too.
00:53:14She was just trapped in that little tiny shed, very little room.
00:53:18Getting rid of that old shop, you know, that's a bill that's just completely gone.
00:53:22You could save a lot.
00:53:24I mean, if you had three grand, that's money that, you know, could just be saved and put into the
00:53:29next project.
00:53:29Exactly.
00:53:30So, this is really cool that we're actually to the point where you can start to explore the space.
00:53:36Yeah, you can start to see where stuff's going to go.
00:53:38My mom, she's always really struggled for so long, she's had to make a decision on, do I pay the
00:53:42shop bill or do I pay the water bill?
00:53:44And then you just go by whichever one has the best grace period, and she's been living like that for
00:53:49a long time.
00:53:49But here's the thing, we're not done.
00:53:53We've got to sheet this thing, get the roof on, have this thing dried in.
00:54:01Now...
00:54:02Why don't you go get a drill and get those things out?
00:54:05Mike takes the wheel, leading Amanda as they build a necessity for their homestead's future and their families.
00:54:13Having an outhouse is probably one of the most needed options.
00:54:16It'll be nice to have someplace closer that we can use the bathroom instead of having to walk a year
00:54:21and a half.
00:54:22That was just one more thing on our list that we needed to get done before we have kids.
00:54:26So, we're as excited as you can be for an outhouse.
00:54:31Ready?
00:54:32Yeah.
00:54:37Cool.
00:54:38This is where it gets sketchy.
00:54:40Come on.
00:54:41Oh.
00:54:42The lumber's a different size.
00:54:43Oh, my God.
00:54:43Where's that big sled?
00:54:46Keep coming.
00:54:56I hate putting this back together with the ants still here, but I don't really have a choice.
00:55:00We're just gonna go for it.
00:55:01It's a final day scramble on the Oglesby's 40-acre Missouri homestead.
00:55:06Let's go.
00:55:07With work full steam at Mike and Amanda's small cabin, Marty clears out the final section of bug-infested flooring
00:55:15underneath Sam and Janice's home before attempting to stabilize the foundation with new beams.
00:55:22What's with all those holes?
00:55:24It's all bugs and stuff?
00:55:26All getting into the spray foam?
00:55:30I mean, that was so solid, and now you see all these holes that you can't see anything in the
00:55:38inside.
00:55:38You only see them underneath the house.
00:55:41I want to get in there so bad.
00:55:43I know you do.
00:55:45Are we cutting that insulation out?
00:55:47Is it hanging there?
00:55:48Don't leave it.
00:55:49We're leaving.
00:55:49Okay.
00:55:52Watching everyone work is very hard.
00:55:54When I got hurt, I had a lot of pain, and I want to get right in there and do
00:55:58it.
00:55:58I'm so overwhelmed with everything, you know, and it's very hard.
00:56:04But I'm getting better, you know, and I'm encouraged.
00:56:06Why are you asking?
00:56:07I was gonna use a soft saw to try to cut it.
00:56:09You want to get in there.
00:56:10Go.
00:56:11It's been a really hard nine months.
00:56:14Sam couldn't walk for six days.
00:56:16He couldn't sleep.
00:56:17He couldn't keep any food down.
00:56:19But my husband is in one piece, and he is able to walk without a cane.
00:56:25And he's gonna be okay.
00:56:29He's such a hard worker, and it's humbling.
00:56:33An inch and a half back at least, because that's a three more, that's four and a half inches.
00:56:37He wants to get in there and do something.
00:56:39I'm not saying that it was supposed to happen that I got hurt, but it's made me slow down
00:56:43and really appreciate what's most important, my marriage, my home, my homestead.
00:56:50Watch your fingers.
00:56:54Okay.
00:56:55Who's ready to set this beam?
00:57:01Um, can he pull those lines back?
00:57:03They're gonna be in the way of the beam.
00:57:05Quick, quick!
00:57:08To upgrade the stability of the cabin's weakened foundation,
00:57:12Marty will first install a new 20-foot beam where the water and bug damage took place.
00:57:17Then, to strengthen the foundation further,
00:57:21he'll stack a 16-foot up-cycled telephone pole underneath it,
00:57:25as well as new posts made from the same poles.
00:57:36Which side's up? Everybody get a hold of it.
00:57:38And I mean everybody. Where's Clint?
00:57:40Cool.
00:57:41Which side's up?
00:57:43This side.
00:57:45Janice, you want part of this?
00:57:47Yes.
00:57:47Get in here, darling.
00:57:49If you built this house by yourself, we could use that expertise.
00:57:54This is where it gets sketchy.
00:57:56Come on.
00:57:57Oh, Dave.
00:57:59Can you guys hold it?
00:58:00Yeah.
00:58:01I got it. I got it.
00:58:01You sure?
00:58:02Yes.
00:58:03That might not...
00:58:04We might have to cut that.
00:58:06The lumber's a different size.
00:58:07Can we push on the back?
00:58:10The sledge?
00:58:11There we go.
00:58:12We'll move it.
00:58:12We'll move it.
00:58:13We'll move it.
00:58:13All that foam.
00:58:14I'm not happy.
00:58:14Where's that big sledge?
00:58:20One foot.
00:58:21Keep wiggling it though.
00:58:22Keep laughing.
00:58:27Give him a hand.
00:58:28Relieve it.
00:58:29Relieve it.
00:58:33No.
00:58:35We're so close.
00:58:35We're going to go on this plug.
00:58:37We're going to have to have the chainsaw.
00:58:48All right.
00:58:49That'll do it.
00:58:50Strike pound, Dave.
00:58:52Four inches.
00:58:54Yes.
00:58:55Almost.
00:58:56Four inches.
00:58:57Almost.
00:58:59Almost.
00:59:00So close.
00:59:00Oh, it's so close.
00:59:02One inch.
00:59:03Keep coming.
00:59:04Hang on.
00:59:04One more hit.
00:59:05Yep.
00:59:06Oh!
00:59:07Okay.
00:59:09Now, Clint, ready for a log.
00:59:15Reinforcing the foundation will ensure the cabin's survival for years to come.
00:59:20Where's that handle at?
00:59:21Right down there, please.
00:59:22Five years ago, Misty taught Sam a hack to ensure the vital greenhouse will
00:59:29stand its own test of time.
00:59:32Couple foundation posts right there.
00:59:35So what?
00:59:36If you take off all the bark, it adds life right to the wood.
00:59:41Yeah.
00:59:42So we'll just take off every bit of bark.
00:59:45We'll cut this guy in half and we'll stick him in the ground.
00:59:47And boom, we got a foundation.
00:59:49You want to do that side?
00:59:50Sure.
00:59:51Okay.
00:59:53Give me a break.
00:59:54Sam works really hard.
00:59:56He's really smart.
00:59:56But I think there is a lot that he has to give.
01:00:00So it's really exciting to fill this greenhouse and help him find his role here.
01:00:10Whoa!
01:00:12Nice!
01:00:15So we got these cedar posts.
01:00:17We'll get them below the frost line.
01:00:18Get some rocks in there.
01:00:19Get some dirt in there.
01:00:19I really like that you can get your foundation pretty much from the woods.
01:00:24Pretty cheap foundation.
01:00:26A foundation is the most important part of your structure, as we've learned from the cabin.
01:00:31So for me, I want to use these cedar posts for the greenhouse.
01:00:35It's rot resistant, it's water resistant, it's insect resistant, super durable, last a really long time, and they're free on
01:00:44the homestead.
01:00:44You don't have a tamper, you just grab a shovel and you turn it upside down.
01:00:47And then as we get towards the top, we can put a little bit bigger ones, right?
01:00:50Yeah.
01:00:53The dirt just will naturally kind of fall in there.
01:00:55You have some pretty stable ground, too.
01:00:59Okay.
01:01:00We did it!
01:01:01The foundation is pretty much in.
01:01:03We're ready in frame.
01:01:04Are you ready?
01:01:05Yes.
01:01:05Okay.
01:01:09Now.
01:01:10All right, Clint, you know what to do.
01:01:11See if you can get centered, please.
01:01:12Up against that beam.
01:01:15With the first beam in place, Marty and the crew must fasten the 1,500 pound telephone pole beneath the
01:01:22cabin before securing it with three new posts.
01:01:27This is at least one day beyond what I thought it would take to fix it, because the problem was
01:01:33ten times worse than I thought.
01:01:36Water, ants, and termites together have created a huge problem for us.
01:01:41All right.
01:01:42Bring it in, please.
01:01:43Lift it up.
01:01:49Walk it in a little bit.
01:01:50Come on in.
01:01:51How close am I to the jack?
01:01:53Stop right there.
01:01:55Pushers and pullers.
01:01:56Dan, can you get underneath this?
01:01:58We're going to try to slide it this way.
01:01:59One, two, three.
01:02:02One inch.
01:02:03You got it, Indian?
01:02:06One, two, three.
01:02:08Done.
01:02:09Done.
01:02:09Done.
01:02:09Nope.
01:02:09That's it.
01:02:13Okay.
01:02:14Good job.
01:02:15All right.
01:02:16It's going to be strong enough?
01:02:17Yes or no?
01:02:17Yes.
01:02:18Yes.
01:02:18Okay.
01:02:18On that note, let's get some measurements and get some posts built.
01:02:21Thanks for your help.
01:02:22Let's go.
01:02:22Quick, quick, quick.
01:02:23Let's go.
01:02:29Marty, I brought some help.
01:02:31You're a worker?
01:02:32Yes, sir.
01:02:33Good.
01:02:33We need some.
01:02:34The pendulum is swinging.
01:02:36We're running out of time.
01:02:37What about this?
01:02:38Can I take this off?
01:02:38Yes, please.
01:02:39We came a long ways to help you and I think we're going to.
01:02:42That said, we're in the battleground right now, sir.
01:02:55Listen, you think you're the first person that ever built a log cabin and, you know,
01:02:59might have had some leaks inside, might have had a tree too close and some of the floor
01:03:04might have rotted out.
01:03:05With only eight hours remaining before Marty must say goodbye, the Oglesby's re-rescue
01:03:11is far from over.
01:03:13What about this?
01:03:13Can I take this off?
01:03:14Yes, please.
01:03:15Mike and Amanda's much needed outhouse begins to take shape.
01:03:19Money.
01:03:19And while Marty sources material for a last minute addition to the couple's property.
01:03:24Where's the plywood at?
01:03:26Sit down there.
01:03:27Amanda calls in valuable reinforcements for the all hands on deck race to the finish.
01:03:34Hope we got some 12s in here.
01:03:37Okay.
01:03:38Hi, Marty.
01:03:39Hello.
01:03:40I brought some help.
01:03:41We could use some help.
01:03:42Who are all these people?
01:03:44This is my sister-in-law, Michelle.
01:03:46Michelle, did we meet before?
01:03:47We did.
01:03:49Who's this?
01:03:51Michelle.
01:03:51This is Michelle.
01:03:52Nice to meet you.
01:03:53You're...
01:03:53Janice's daughter.
01:03:54Is he a good worker?
01:03:55Let's go.
01:03:56Okay.
01:03:58Janice's daughter.
01:03:58Yep.
01:03:59It's so good to see you again.
01:04:00Who's this?
01:04:00This is my dad Leonard.
01:04:02Leonard Ann.
01:04:02Patty.
01:04:03Patty, my mom.
01:04:04Patty, what are your skills?
01:04:06What do you do for a living?
01:04:07Fat old truck driver.
01:04:09Fat old truck driver?
01:04:10Yeah.
01:04:10We need one.
01:04:11We've bitten off a lot of work.
01:04:14I'm not sure we're going to pull it off.
01:04:15Who's this guy?
01:04:16This is Sam's son.
01:04:17You're Sam's son?
01:04:18Yes, sir.
01:04:19Oh, nice to meet you, man.
01:04:20You're like a big strapping guy.
01:04:22You're a worker?
01:04:23Yes, sir.
01:04:24Good.
01:04:24We need some.
01:04:25Young lady, follow me.
01:04:27Family, let's load this truck.
01:04:28Please.
01:04:29Let's go.
01:04:30One at a time.
01:04:30Right on the truck.
01:04:32Right?
01:04:32Yep.
01:04:33All right, keep them coming.
01:04:33Keep them coming.
01:04:34What do you do for a living, young lady?
01:04:36I underwrite risk.
01:04:37Oh, no.
01:04:39And you're going to work alongside me?
01:04:41It's over.
01:04:43Oh, no.
01:04:44Today, it's all about family.
01:04:46They're bringing lumber.
01:04:47They're bringing supplies.
01:04:48Go.
01:04:50Leonard!
01:04:51Yeah?
01:04:52Drive it like you stole it!
01:04:54Woo!
01:04:55At the end of the day, they're helping their mother.
01:04:59It doesn't get better than that.
01:05:04Hey!
01:05:05Let's do one more!
01:05:07Let's go!
01:05:13Are we cutting rebar?
01:05:14Yes or no?
01:05:15As the rotting foundation underneath Sam and Janiece's cabin becomes more secure...
01:05:21Let's talk a little bit.
01:05:22Marty addresses the biggest threat that remains.
01:05:26When I was here five years ago, that place was full of ants.
01:05:29Right after you left, we killed a bunch, and then we didn't have hardly any, and then
01:05:32we're starting to see them again.
01:05:33Out of all the hats I wear, exterminator isn't one of them.
01:05:38So, if you look right here, these are some exterminators, local Missouri guys that know
01:05:44exactly what's going on in Missouri.
01:05:46What's your name?
01:05:47Zachary Martin.
01:05:48Zachary Martin.
01:05:49Yes, sir.
01:05:50My name's Matthew Brock.
01:05:51I'm the service manager.
01:05:52Matthew Brock.
01:05:53Hi, Janiece.
01:05:54This is Sam.
01:05:55Nice to meet you.
01:05:55Nice to meet you.
01:05:56Welcome to our homestead.
01:05:5740-acre paradise right here.
01:06:00Yeah.
01:06:00Yes.
01:06:00Except, we got some pests.
01:06:02That's where you guys come in.
01:06:03What we're here for.
01:06:06A colony of ants.
01:06:07A colony of termites.
01:06:09Woodroaches.
01:06:09It was crushing.
01:06:11Then pulls up these two amazing men, ready to go to work.
01:06:15They're gonna bomb the house.
01:06:16They're gonna take care of the land.
01:06:18They're gonna educate us.
01:06:19We're gonna win this battle against these bugs.
01:06:21We're kicking these bugs out of our house.
01:06:24Out.
01:06:25We need to go ahead and get the termites addressed for you right away at least.
01:06:28What damage has been done.
01:06:29Treat that area.
01:06:30Yeah.
01:06:30Okay.
01:06:30That, that's, that's a relief.
01:06:32Okay, that's good.
01:06:39Where's the buckets at?
01:06:40I don't want, hey, let's get the bucket on.
01:06:43Thanks to that amazing neighbor Justin Bach, Amanda and Mike now have a 350 foot water line and all the
01:06:51water they could ever use.
01:06:53However, how are they getting rid of that water?
01:06:56We're thinking about putting in a kitchen and a little gray water leach field.
01:07:03Every time that I talk to Mike and Amanda about the future and their cabin and what their dream is,
01:07:09Mike does most of the talking.
01:07:11And the little bit that Amanda says always seems to center around a kitchen.
01:07:18A simple sink inside the cabin and not outside.
01:07:24Every time she says that Mike says, I want to cook outside.
01:07:26I want to be outdoors.
01:07:27I never hear her say she wants to cook outside.
01:07:32P.S.
01:07:32Unless I've forgotten.
01:07:34This is Missouri.
01:07:36Tornado alley.
01:07:37What's for dinner, honey?
01:07:39Honey?
01:07:41Honey?
01:07:42Exactly.
01:07:45The new indoor kitchen is the first step towards fulfilling Mike and Amanda's dream of raising a family on the
01:07:51homestead.
01:07:54Five years ago, Matt and Mike completed their workshop project, fulfilling a dream for the other important woman in Mike's
01:08:02life.
01:08:02She had her little workspace, but it was only probably about four feet wide.
01:08:06We're going to triple that with these massive planks.
01:08:10And this window is a six-foot wide window.
01:08:13That's going to give her all the light she could possibly need.
01:08:16This is looking real good.
01:08:17Yeah, this is great.
01:08:21Go ahead.
01:08:22Take a look around.
01:08:24Ta-da!
01:08:25What do you think, huh?
01:08:29Wow.
01:08:31Look at all the space.
01:08:32Your last workbench was only this big.
01:08:36Yeah, I gotta really...
01:08:37Right next to the window.
01:08:38Right out the window.
01:08:39I didn't see that coming.
01:08:41Did you see the skylight?
01:08:42Okay, now that's cool.
01:08:44Yeah.
01:08:45I just can't even take in how much room is in here.
01:08:49Oh, you're so...
01:08:51This is amazing.
01:08:52Giving her this shop 100% free and clear for her to have.
01:08:57I mean, it's the best thing for this homestead.
01:08:59Look at the amount of work that has happened.
01:09:01Yeah.
01:09:03It's more than incredible.
01:09:08Now, as Mike puts the finishing touches on the new kitchen sink,
01:09:12he sees his plan accelerating before his eyes.
01:09:16Sure?
01:09:16Yeah.
01:09:17You don't see any gaps?
01:09:19Having water there is everything.
01:09:21It's so great.
01:09:23Our house is way, way ahead.
01:09:25I mean, we're...
01:09:26I feel like they've taken years off my 10-year plan
01:09:29in just, like, a couple days.
01:09:30It's incredible.
01:09:37What happens on this stage?
01:09:39One day Sam was at work, and I built a stage.
01:09:42And the kids dress up, and they come and they do a skit.
01:09:45And sometimes there's parents here...
01:09:47Give me an example.
01:09:48Okay, okay.
01:09:49Of what happens here, please.
01:09:50I want to see it.
01:09:51I'm the audience.
01:09:53Okay, ready?
01:09:55Hey!
01:09:58Another thing that's important, I think, in the woods is sound.
01:10:01So I offer the kids all kinds of instruments.
01:10:04Drums, maracas, tambourines.
01:10:08I put costumes in there, too.
01:10:10Then they can go a little further.
01:10:11I gave them all tails from my store.
01:10:15See?
01:10:16We had a couple little girls over, and they said that they can only be themselves when they're here.
01:10:21What's it like being married to this amazing creature?
01:10:24It's amazing.
01:10:24She's in the clouds, and I'm down here, and we bounce each other up.
01:10:36Okay.
01:10:38As the dust settles on an epic four days in southwest Missouri, Marty meets Mike and Amanda to check out
01:10:45their newly upgraded homestead footprint.
01:10:48The very first day, I was brought over to this cabin, and I barely could climb into your cabin.
01:10:57But that said, I thought, man, before we leave here, I don't care how busy it gets, we have to
01:11:02leave them with a legal, safe set of stairs.
01:11:05So, my lady, see if you can make your way up after you, sir.
01:11:10All right.
01:11:11Now, just for me, just for me, is that porch big enough so you guys could come out here and
01:11:17take a break and enjoy Missouri, the sunset, et cetera?
01:11:20Yes.
01:11:21Look right over there, because I remember asking, is there anything we can do for you guys?
01:11:25Both of you said, how about an outhouse?
01:11:28Yeah.
01:11:28So, every time you make your way over there with a roll of toilet paper, you can say, my husband,
01:11:36Mike, is a hero.
01:11:39Yeah.
01:11:39Okay.
01:11:40I'm so excited.
01:11:42I can't wait to use it.
01:11:44Having an outhouse is definitely a weight lifted off of our shoulders.
01:11:48It'll be nice to have someplace closer that we can use the bathroom instead of having to walk the other
01:11:53outhouses on the property.
01:11:55Oh, wow.
01:11:57Feel free, please, to let your husband show you, introduce you to your new place to wash kitchens.
01:12:04It's nice.
01:12:05There is water right to the faucet.
01:12:08There is all the water you will ever use.
01:12:12This is incredible.
01:12:13And then also, if you look under here, please look underneath your sink.
01:12:18Your husband has hooked that up.
01:12:19Look right there to a drain.
01:12:21Uh-huh.
01:12:21And we have a little leach field out there.
01:12:25Five years ago, Mike helped the Rainies rescue his mother's 40-acre homestead.
01:12:31We're gonna go fix that floor.
01:12:32But over the last year, his efforts to develop his own piece of the property have slowed to a standstill,
01:12:39as the lack of water and basic utilities made it next to impossible.
01:12:47Now, with a 300-foot water line that goes directly to the cabin, a brand-new outhouse, and a fully
01:12:55functional indoor kitchen, Mike and Amanda have the resources to thrive as their family grows in the future.
01:13:04Thank you so much.
01:13:05Don't thank me.
01:13:06Yeah.
01:13:06Give that guy a hug right there.
01:13:07Thank you so much.
01:13:08Can I kiss him?
01:13:10Friendly?
01:13:11No.
01:13:12Friendly?
01:13:14No.
01:13:14Even it out.
01:13:15Even it out.
01:13:16All right, now even it out in the middle.
01:13:17Love you, babe.
01:13:18I am hopeful for the future here.
01:13:20There's just so much potential in this property.
01:13:23Like, even in just mine and Mike's little corner of it.
01:13:26You know, now that we're married, it's even more fun to see it grow, because it's something we're building together.
01:13:30I'm very grateful for it.
01:13:31Thank you so much.
01:13:32You're quite welcome.
01:13:33But the sun is going down, so...
01:13:35Yeah.
01:13:35Let's go find the parents.
01:13:46All right, so, scene of the crime.
01:13:49I've been here twice looking at this beautiful cabin.
01:13:52And by the way, I love this cabin.
01:13:54It means a lot to us.
01:13:56However, this was kind of the trouble area, right?
01:13:58Yes.
01:14:00And I learned a few things here, because I would have never dreamed that in just a few years' time,
01:14:06those ants or termites could literally bring down a house.
01:14:38Right.
01:14:39Since then, the foundation deteriorated once again due to severe storm damage and insect infestation.
01:14:47Now, with a fully reinforced beam and posts made from upcycled telephone poles, the Oglesby's can count on their home
01:14:56being safe and secure for years to come.
01:14:58So much has happened in just days.
01:15:01Marty got to work, and he did what he had to do.
01:15:04So, at the end of the day, the house is sound, and that's the most important thing.
01:15:09I'll forever be grateful.
01:15:11I noticed on day one, you were lifting stuff.
01:15:14And I was like, oh, I guess he's recuperated.
01:15:16And then I noticed.
01:15:17I'm not.
01:15:18Yeah, I'm hurting pretty good.
01:15:19So, I appreciate your efforts and all your help.
01:15:22You're completely insane.
01:15:23I know.
01:15:24Isn't it great?
01:15:26But in a good way.
01:15:27Look at you.
01:15:28Look at you out here.
01:15:28You started all this alone.
01:15:30And I'm so happy you found a nice, hardworking, logical, pragmatic, normal person.
01:15:38To balance me out.
01:15:39To balance you out.
01:15:40To balance me out.
01:15:41On that happy note, if you don't mind, please wait for me at the truck.
01:15:45Okay.
01:15:46Fair enough.
01:15:46Okay, we'll see you in a bit.
01:15:48See you.
01:15:59Well, on every homestead, there comes a time when the sun sets and we've got to say goodbye.
01:16:07Five years ago when I came here, it was just the two of you.
01:16:09Yes.
01:16:10The population of this 40 acre homestead doubled in the last five years.
01:16:14Yes.
01:16:15Got married.
01:16:16Your son came to help you out.
01:16:18Now he's on this homestead with his own cabin on this 40 acres with his own family.
01:16:22Yes.
01:16:23What do you think of this lifestyle, Amanda?
01:16:25I'm growing to love it more and more every day.
01:16:28What do you guys think about raising a family on this 40 acres?
01:16:31Oh, we look forward to it.
01:16:32Yeah.
01:16:32Yeah.
01:16:32We can't wait.
01:16:33Yeah.
01:16:33Be great.
01:16:34Having grandma G and grandma Sam.
01:16:37Yes.
01:16:37You've got water now, you can spray with the hose.
01:16:39Yeah.
01:16:39That's a great idea.
01:16:40On that note, is getting water a big thing or not?
01:16:44Oh, it's the biggest.
01:16:44It's huge.
01:16:44I just don't know how we could have raised kids without it.
01:16:49We couldn't have.
01:16:50Even to get our own water onto the property by ourselves, we would have had so much harder
01:16:55time.
01:16:56If you don't mind, would you accept that water line?
01:16:59Yes, I accept that.
01:16:59The kitchen sink?
01:17:00Yes.
01:17:01And the outhouse as our wedding presents?
01:17:03Wow.
01:17:03Yes, absolutely.
01:17:04Wow.
01:17:04Okay, so that's from us as a crew, as a team.
01:17:07Thank you so much.
01:17:08We really appreciate it.
01:17:08You're quite welcome.
01:17:09I appreciate it.
01:17:09You're very deserving.
01:17:11And I feel bad for you because you were sidelined with an injury.
01:17:15You'll be back in the game and someday you'll have little helpers.
01:17:19Yeah.
01:17:19And you'll pass on all these little-
01:17:21That's awesome.
01:17:21All these homestead hacks and tricks.
01:17:23Lifestyle.
01:17:24Yeah.
01:17:25There's no doubt in my mind that when Sam gets better, he's healed up, he'll strap
01:17:30back on the tool belt and he'll go to work on this homestead.
01:17:34And by the way, not alone because Mike and Amanda are here.
01:17:38I'm very grateful and I'm just determined to heal up completely so I can just continue
01:17:43doing what I need to do.
01:17:45Good man.
01:17:46Young lady.
01:17:47I hate this part.
01:17:48I don't like the part when you leave.
01:17:50Well, who knows?
01:17:51I might be back here in five years.
01:17:54I'm thinking that if I rolled onto this homestead five years from now, that Mike and Amanda
01:18:00would show me a few little homesteaders running around in the front yard.
01:18:05Three generations.
01:18:07We might be building a tree fort.
01:18:10Ooh.
01:18:10A swing set.
01:18:11There we go.
01:18:12There we go.
01:18:13Bedrooms.
01:18:13Bedroom.
01:18:14Ooh, now we're talking.
01:18:16On that happy note, thank you.
01:18:18I know you'll be back in the game.
01:18:20Thank you, young lady.
01:18:20I'm not much of a hugger.
01:18:21I don't care.
01:18:22I don't care.
01:18:22I don't care.
01:18:26This is the show me state.
01:18:28Thank you so much.
01:18:29And these people in Missouri have shown me that homesteading is everything to do with family.
01:18:40All right.
01:18:42Till next time.
01:18:43Till next time.
01:18:44And now, I'm going to show myself to the next homestead.
01:18:49Bye, Marty.
01:18:50We love you.
01:18:51Call me in the morning.
01:18:53Woo!
01:18:54Woo!
