Transcript
00:00:01Four extraordinary worlds steeped in tradition are opening their doors
00:00:07Hopefully it's not haunted.
00:00:08To four groups of young Brits.
00:00:10I'm a bit nervous now.
00:00:12Ready to take a giant leap out of their comfort zones.
00:00:15I'm just a 24-7 princess.
00:00:17What happens when a generation raised online
00:00:20All we care about is how we look.
00:00:22I've really rotted my brain from TikTok.
00:00:25Come face to face with regimes built on no-nonsense rules.
00:00:29How long I've got to spend in silence?
00:00:31Actually more than 10 hours.
00:00:33Where loyalty and principles really count.
00:00:36You had your blazer done up in my school.
00:00:38You was a weirdo.
00:00:39I don't want to do this anymore.
00:00:41Will this unique clash of values.
00:00:43Whatever I was expecting this is 50, 100% more.
00:00:46What the hell?
00:00:48And cultures.
00:00:50Lead to conflict.
00:00:51Everybody can stand right here and shut the f*** up.
00:00:54Or lasting change.
00:00:55There comes a point where it's not fun and cool anymore.
00:00:58Come on.
00:00:58And after each unforgettable week.
00:01:01This is amazing.
00:01:02We're top of the world right now.
00:01:03Will either side ever be the same again?
00:01:06I think I've just found three friends.
00:01:08It's been the most funniest, strangest, abnormal week of my life.
00:01:13I feel like I've had an epiphany.
00:01:15This time.
00:01:16You cannot tell me this is not stylish.
00:01:18Three shopaholics who like to splash the cash.
00:01:21I am obsessed.
00:01:23Step back to the 60s on a hippie commune.
00:01:26Oh.
00:01:27Where they always put the planet first.
00:01:30I'm not emptying out the toilet.
00:01:32No.
00:01:33No.
00:01:33We're not doing that.
00:01:34What type of hippie village am I at?
00:01:36Can these unashamed materialists.
00:01:39Why am I going to go and wee in a ditch?
00:01:43Been the designer brands to embrace peace and love.
00:01:47So you're not a cull?
00:01:48No.
00:01:49Oh no, that's grim.
00:01:51And when looking good meets feeling good.
00:01:54There you go.
00:01:55Will everyone break new ground?
00:01:58This experience.
00:01:59I can't quite.
00:02:00Has brought so many emotions you would never think of in your life.
00:02:09Om.
00:02:17Om.
00:02:18Om.
00:02:26Do you think they've got Deliveroo?
00:02:31Welcome to my closet.
00:02:34Saffron from Essex is the ultimate blonde bombshell.
00:02:38This is my buyer collection.
00:02:40A Christian Dior.
00:02:41Gucci.
00:02:42Gucci.
00:02:42Gucci.
00:02:43This room is my life.
00:02:45She's built an impressive haul of luxury goods.
00:02:48Mostly by wrapping men around her little finger.
00:02:51I am a sugar baby.
00:02:53A sugar baby is basically a companion.
00:02:56When I have a long term sugar daddy, then the items per month will be like a few Chanel
00:03:01handbags or a few Christian the boot on.
00:03:03Her life revolves around two things.
00:03:06Presence and being pampered.
00:03:08The men that I've dated, they've always looked past me.
00:03:11Like I'm just a 24-7 princess, so I don't know what life is without that.
00:03:19I don't think I've really ever been in the countryside before.
00:03:23This is my room.
00:03:25Come on in.
00:03:25I love shopping, so I wanted to make my room look like a shop.
00:03:29Criminology student Umar from Derby might work for TK Maxx, but his taste is strictly designer.
00:03:35I have a really bad shopping addiction.
00:03:38Something new to the collection.
00:03:39It's this Versace gown.
00:03:41You cannot tell me this is not stylish.
00:03:44This 20-year-old spares no expense on his looks.
00:03:47I would describe myself as selfish, materialistic, superficial.
00:03:53And I hate when people say it's a bad thing when it's not a bad thing.
00:03:56Especially when dad is picking up the tab.
00:03:59Be a good boy.
00:04:00Yeah.
00:04:00Yeah?
00:04:01I don't, like, contribute to anything, to be honest.
00:04:04And then when my paycheck runs out, I'll just be texting my dad,
00:04:07oh, can you buy me this?
00:04:08My sister, can you buy me this?
00:04:09Never say no.
00:04:10He does know the value of the money, but he doesn't know the value of my money.
00:04:14Yeah?
00:04:16I can't lie.
00:04:17I'm really hoping it's not a farm.
00:04:1922-year-old Bridie from Salford is a fashion student
00:04:23who makes no apologies for getting what she wants.
00:04:26My dad would definitely describe me as a bit of a diva.
00:04:28Maybe say I'm a bit of a brat as well.
00:04:30How cute.
00:04:32A TikTok influencer with over 10,000 followers and a serious unboxing habit.
00:04:37She rarely repeats an outfit.
00:04:39Fresh back from the gym to do.
00:04:43Even if it means spending money she doesn't have.
00:04:46I do not live within my means, but I'm young and I want to go out and have fun
00:04:51and I want to look really good while I'm doing it.
00:04:53Wish me luck.
00:04:54Won't need it.
00:04:56Our three conspicuous consumers are leaving their luxuries behind
00:05:00to live with people who see the world very differently.
00:05:06The whole idea of consumerism, of buying things, involves exploiting other beings.
00:05:16So we have to live differently.
00:05:21The inhabitants of Cheyenne Farm, a remote 25-acre site in Cornwall,
00:05:26live a proudly Back to Basics existence.
00:05:29We're a very simple farm and everything we do is eco-friendly as possible.
00:05:34It's more than a commune.
00:05:36It's not drink the Kool-Aid and welcome.
00:05:38It is a community.
00:05:39It is like stepping back in time.
00:05:41Inspired by the hippie communes of the 60s and 70s,
00:05:44they reject the individualism of the modern world.
00:05:48We're not designed to be isolated in little boxes.
00:05:51We're designed to live together, to solve problems together, to play together.
00:05:56That's, I think, the basis of humanity.
00:05:59At Cheyenne, they've ditched the internet for inner peace,
00:06:02with strict rules about living green and working for the common good.
00:06:06We're all here to make the world better for each other and for ourselves.
00:06:14What's up?
00:06:15I'm just packing my K.
00:06:18It's going to be a huge challenge for the new arrivals,
00:06:21who love nothing more than more, more, more.
00:06:24Haven't got a coat.
00:06:25Yeah, I mean, there's no coats in here, is there?
00:06:28Absolutely none.
00:06:29Probably no shoes either.
00:06:31She's quite opinionated.
00:06:32I'm not too sure how she's going to handle it.
00:06:34I can't imagine her without her creature comforts.
00:06:36It might be a wake-up call.
00:06:38Not everything in life is about designer things and pink.
00:06:41You know, there's more to life than that.
00:06:43Make sure you take some warm clothes with you, because it could be cold.
00:06:46Yeah.
00:06:47You've got to give your best shot.
00:06:48Although Umar is known to give up too easily...
00:06:51You have to carry on and keep trying.
00:06:54...he still manages to get exactly what he wants.
00:06:57My mum passed away, like, three years ago now.
00:06:59I live with my dad and my two sisters.
00:07:02Because they do everything for me,
00:07:03it feels like I'm just living in a hotel and doing my stuff.
00:07:05Whatever he asks for, he gets it.
00:07:08We won't say no to him.
00:07:09Because after losing his mum, we just don't want to upset him in any way.
00:07:14Maybe I'll have to take an extra case.
00:07:19This week-long walk on the wild side could make or break these committed shopaholics.
00:07:24I don't think a lot of people fully understand what they sign up to when they come and live somewhere
00:07:30like here.
00:07:31The off-grid element of it alone is quite a gnarly shock.
00:07:39If I was to change something about my current life, I'm feeling like it's a bit shallow.
00:07:45And I would like to be a bit more deep, because I have got depth.
00:07:49I might not look like it, but I do.
00:07:52I've always lived in this bubble.
00:07:54I've never really taken risks.
00:07:56I love my home comforts.
00:07:57I think I'm going to struggle for sure.
00:07:59I've never had to live a life where I'm not in control, or it doesn't revolve around me.
00:08:04I want to embrace their life.
00:08:06But I reckon it only gets to a certain point, and then you're like, oh, fuck this.
00:08:11If I don't walk out and go home, I've achieved.
00:08:16Still to come.
00:08:18For me, it's kind of tearing my life apart.
00:08:21Umar gets off to a bad start.
00:08:23I have to need my iron.
00:08:25And it doesn't take long for saffron to break.
00:08:29I don't want to do this anymore.
00:08:38Three cereal shoppers are ditching their Dior for dream catchers
00:08:42to spend a week with a hippie community in Cornwall.
00:08:45Hey, guys.
00:08:46Hi.
00:08:47Welcome to Cheyenne.
00:08:48I'm Brett.
00:08:49I'm Ben.
00:08:50I'm a fruit farmer.
00:08:51And I run a circus.
00:08:53And he's one of the founders of Cheyenne.
00:08:55And I live here, and I'm the community coordinator.
00:08:58So, yeah, welcome.
00:08:59Amazing.
00:09:00Do you need a hand with any of them?
00:09:01Oh, you can take mine.
00:09:02Thank you very much.
00:09:04Cheers.
00:09:04How long are you staying for?
00:09:05I'm moving in, babe.
00:09:09The things that come to mind when I think of eco community
00:09:11are chaining yourself to a tree, shouting probably at me
00:09:16for all the consumerism that I do.
00:09:20I feel like everything I say, you guys are going to be like,
00:09:24you don't know what hard life is, Gil.
00:09:26That's how I feel.
00:09:27Well, there's different flavours of different hard, isn't there?
00:09:30I wasn't really sure what I was expecting,
00:09:33but I think whatever I was expecting,
00:09:35this is about 50%, 100% more than what I was expecting.
00:09:38Do you know what I mean?
00:09:39So, it'll be exciting to see how they go on through the week.
00:09:42I did not bring appropriate attire for the week.
00:09:44I would rather be cold and look really stylish.
00:09:47This is the bee orchard.
00:09:49Bee aware.
00:09:51I think that hippies, they're a bit cavemen-like.
00:09:54I think we're from completely different worlds,
00:09:56so there's no similarities there whatsoever.
00:10:00I didn't know there'd be kids here. Hello.
00:10:03Oh, we all live here.
00:10:04We're like a village.
00:10:05These people, who are all very city-based,
00:10:08probably don't know a lot of things
00:10:10that they're going to experience here.
00:10:12And I think a lot of the experience will be very challenging.
00:10:16We're going to introduce you to Babu and Susannah,
00:10:18who are going to show you where you're staying.
00:10:20Hi.
00:10:20Hi.
00:10:21Hello.
00:10:22I'm Susannah.
00:10:23Do you hug?
00:10:24Yeah.
00:10:24Yeah, I'm quite amazing. I'm Susannah.
00:10:26You all right?
00:10:27I'm Umar.
00:10:28Hi, Umar.
00:10:28Welcome here.
00:10:30This is a bathhouse.
00:10:31In this community, chemicals are out and natural is in.
00:10:36So we use natural products in here,
00:10:38because all the waste water goes into that pond there.
00:10:42We've got three showers.
00:10:44Look at the mosaic.
00:10:45To be honest, my idea of hippies is very unhygienic people.
00:10:50And though it's called a bathhouse,
00:10:52our shoppers aren't actually allowed to have one.
00:10:55Best not taking a bath,
00:10:56because that zaps all the hot water,
00:10:58but there's always water for the showers.
00:10:59OK.
00:11:00I think I will struggle most with washing my hair extensions.
00:11:03This is a really, really real one.
00:11:05I don't know how I'm going to style my extensions
00:11:07without a curling tong and electronics,
00:11:09and how am I going to dry my hair?
00:11:11I'm getting stressed.
00:11:13While there are strict rules about the products,
00:11:16the rest of the bathhouse vibe is more liberal.
00:11:19The whole community uses this,
00:11:21so if someone's having a shower,
00:11:22someone else will come in and use another shower as well,
00:11:25because it's a community.
00:11:26Yeah.
00:11:27Wow.
00:11:29I think that's shocking.
00:11:31I'm not happy about in the bath,
00:11:33and I like to have one every night,
00:11:35so I don't want anyone disturbing me.
00:11:37I've just got here,
00:11:38and I don't really understand their choices and reasons and whatever,
00:11:41but to me, already, I'm like,
00:11:43oh, it just feels uncomfortable.
00:11:49And these are the compost toilets.
00:11:51So there's no flushing water.
00:11:53You're doing your business,
00:11:54and then when you're finished,
00:11:55you throw a handful of sawdust in after you.
00:11:59Right.
00:12:00You'll get the use to it.
00:12:01It's like at a festival.
00:12:02Yeah, it's like a festival toilet, but cleaner.
00:12:05I've never been to a festival.
00:12:05I've never been to a festival.
00:12:06Oh, come on, guys.
00:12:08Don't know about, you know,
00:12:09obviously it runs turds.
00:12:11I do not know about that one,
00:12:12but I'm just trying to be open,
00:12:14and it's not the end of the world,
00:12:16pooing in a hole.
00:12:17There's no flush.
00:12:19There's no flush.
00:12:20Yeah, because we're really conscious of water here.
00:12:22Right.
00:12:23When you've got to go for a poo in the middle of the night,
00:12:26and it's dark,
00:12:27they'll be moving into nature,
00:12:30and they'll enjoy it or they won't.
00:12:33I'm just going to have one minute,
00:12:35and then I'll join you.
00:12:37Less than an hour in,
00:12:39and Saffron's already hit her limit.
00:12:41I hate the wilderness so much
00:12:44that I used to live with a balcony,
00:12:47and the insects and the grass freaked me out so much
00:12:49I had to swap and get places out of a balcony.
00:12:52The reality of her new home is sinking in fast.
00:12:56Oh, my God.
00:12:59Into the middle of the steps.
00:13:00Oh, my God.
00:13:02Oh, my God.
00:13:02Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.
00:13:05I can't fucking do this.
00:13:07You got this.
00:13:08Come on.
00:13:08You got this.
00:13:11I don't like any of it.
00:13:13There you go.
00:13:16I don't want to do this anymore.
00:13:20No, I really don't want to do this anymore.
00:13:23Oh, my God.
00:13:27There's too much.
00:13:28I can't.
00:13:29What's too much, babe?
00:13:31Just all of it, like the bees,
00:13:33the walking, the climbing.
00:13:36We have had people that came here
00:13:39and before they even got out of the car,
00:13:41they were, you know, in shock,
00:13:43and they didn't even stay the night.
00:13:45They left.
00:13:46So it's not for everybody.
00:13:47I'm not used to quiet at all.
00:13:49Well, you don't get used to it, I'm sure.
00:13:50You got this, mate.
00:13:52Yeah.
00:13:53You really have.
00:13:54She's coming into an environment
00:13:55that's way out of her comfort zone.
00:13:57I hope she lasts the week.
00:13:59Saffron decides to stay,
00:14:01at least for now.
00:14:03We're here to support you in any way we can.
00:14:06Come on, then.
00:14:07Come on.
00:14:07You got this.
00:14:10While her shopaholic sidekick
00:14:12is struggling to face commune life,
00:14:14Bridie seems up for the challenge.
00:14:17Oh, my gosh.
00:14:18I love it.
00:14:19Why does it kind of smell like a greenhouse?
00:14:23I'd really like to be more sustainable.
00:14:24I'm hoping that this is really going to open my eyes
00:14:26and be like, hang on a minute.
00:14:27All this stuff I take for granted.
00:14:29I think there's going to be some tears.
00:14:31But, I mean, you can't grow without tears, so...
00:14:36Oh, is that the wardrobe?
00:14:37Er, there's not really a wardrobe, no.
00:14:41Image-obsessed Umar is seriously unimpressed
00:14:44with the lack of mod cons.
00:14:46Do you have an iron?
00:14:48Erm...
00:14:49I don't think so.
00:14:51Can I not get anything, actually?
00:14:53Er, you can...
00:14:54Well, the thing is, it takes a lot of electricity,
00:14:56but we can ask, OK?
00:14:59That's OK. See you later.
00:15:00See you. Bye.
00:15:01Bye.
00:15:02That's a joke.
00:15:04I actually need my iron.
00:15:05It's a fucking joke.
00:15:07It seemed to be a complete shock for them
00:15:10to come here
00:15:11and to see how different life is here to theirs.
00:15:17Creased clothes or not,
00:15:19all three guests are summoned
00:15:21to one of Cheyenne's regular community meetings
00:15:23to find out the grand plan for the week.
00:15:27Our visitors are quite extreme.
00:15:29Oh, that's exciting.
00:15:29They're a little bit different from what we used to do.
00:15:31When I say a little bit, I mean, wow.
00:15:36Cheyenne's rules and all its decisions are made collectively
00:15:39by the 15 adults and seven kids who live here.
00:15:44So all of us here have other jobs than working on the farm.
00:15:48So you're not a cult?
00:15:49No.
00:15:50We're not a cult.
00:15:52And the three new arrivals will be expected to get in line.
00:15:56So this week is the most important week in our year.
00:16:00It's apple season.
00:16:01And on Sunday it's apple fair,
00:16:03which is our annual celebration of everything that is Cheyenne.
00:16:06You're going to be helping us juice apples,
00:16:08bottle apple juice.
00:16:09You're coming to the market with us on Saturday.
00:16:12So we'll see how much juice you can sell.
00:16:14I think I'm going to be so good at that.
00:16:16Oh, yeah?
00:16:16I do.
00:16:17Do you think we should make it into a little competition?
00:16:18You should.
00:16:19You three will be meeting us two after yoga tomorrow morning
00:16:23to start on farm tasks.
00:16:25I have some concerns about some of the activities.
00:16:28Some of the more farmy bits getting down and dirty
00:16:30might be a bit harder for them, but we'll see.
00:16:33Thank you very much for all of your time.
00:16:36And let's have dinner.
00:16:37Welcome the guys.
00:16:43Cheers, big ears.
00:16:45Do the nails have to stay on?
00:16:47Listen, if one comes off, it comes off.
00:16:51As the shoppers sit down for their first community meal,
00:16:54host Susannah wastes no time digging into Saffron's
00:16:57slightly unusual career.
00:16:59Is it your sugar baby?
00:17:02Basically, I am a sugar baby,
00:17:03so I have, like, guys that just fund my life.
00:17:07I will meet a married guy.
00:17:09Yes, they're always married, don't freak out.
00:17:12And he will just need to let off some steam.
00:17:14Now, it's easy to think that more is happening than I'm saying,
00:17:17but this is where you'd be very wrong.
00:17:19It's nothing intimate.
00:17:21Right, yeah.
00:17:21Yeah, it's conversational.
00:17:23It's getting glam on a night out, making them feel good.
00:17:27I also have paypigs too,
00:17:29which are men who basically want to be humiliated,
00:17:31and I will humiliate them and they will gift me items and money.
00:17:35So do you just work at night then?
00:17:36Mm-hm.
00:17:37I'm like a little entrepreneur girl.
00:17:39I do many things.
00:17:40Coat Hanger Man is mine and my best friend's favourite customer.
00:17:45We meet him in a hotel, but this is all above board, OK?
00:17:47There's nothing weird going on.
00:17:48The only weird bit is that he likes to be hung up
00:17:51inside the closet on a hanger.
00:17:53And then we're on the bed ordering room service,
00:17:55like, with his cards, drinking bottles of champagne,
00:17:58like, rinsing his card out, laugh at him.
00:18:01And then when, like, the time's finished,
00:18:02we get him out of the wardrobe and then we go home.
00:18:04You'd be so surprised how many people seek it out, yeah.
00:18:09There just seemed to be a big gap between their lifestyle
00:18:12and this type of lifestyle, especially for saffron.
00:18:16So it's just financial.
00:18:17Yeah, yeah.
00:18:20My ambition is to actually find what I'm supposed to do in life
00:18:23and I really haven't found it,
00:18:24and I'm hopeful that I will find it one day.
00:18:27Thanks very much, you guys, for coming down.
00:18:30I will be knocking on your door to take you to yoga with Brett.
00:18:32Then we'll be at work from 10.
00:18:34I'd recommend an early night.
00:18:35Let's have a great week.
00:18:36Woo!
00:18:46Used to starting their day at 3pm,
00:18:49our night owl shoppers now have to rise with the sun at Cheyenne.
00:18:53Oh, lovely.
00:18:55Let me show you the toilet,
00:18:56because I don't even think you've actually seen it properly.
00:18:59You lift the lid,
00:19:02and it's the ground.
00:19:05I actually fell asleep fine,
00:19:07but Uma, next door,
00:19:10snores like my granddad.
00:19:12It was so cold here.
00:19:14I don't know how people do it.
00:19:15Like, I'm literally sleeping outside.
00:19:17But look at that.
00:19:18I never wake up this early,
00:19:20and right now I look like a mess,
00:19:22and I feel like a mess.
00:19:24I feel like they're going to start sleeping in the real me.
00:19:28Oh, shit.
00:19:30This morning I woke up and I just want to run away again.
00:19:33I've only been here one day,
00:19:34and I'm so grateful for my actual life.
00:19:37Morning.
00:19:38Morning.
00:19:38Morning.
00:19:40Hello, mate.
00:19:41Come on out.
00:19:42You ready for some yoga?
00:19:43Yeah.
00:19:43You can leave your phone behind, Uma.
00:19:45There won't be an opportunity to look at it.
00:19:47And the doom scrolling detox starts now for our trio.
00:19:51We're about people finding themselves.
00:19:54You know, because you can't really live a full life
00:19:57without knowing yourself inside.
00:20:00And to do that you need to have some space and some calm.
00:20:04To show that fulfilment doesn't always come with a price tag,
00:20:07Ben and Brett kick off a week of mindful activities
00:20:10with a sunrise yoga class.
00:20:12Oh.
00:20:17For Bridie, this enforced phone break comes after two years
00:20:21of non-stop content creation.
00:20:23My attention span is non-existent.
00:20:25I've really rotted my brain from TikTok.
00:20:28And I've tried to meditate and I just can't seem to,
00:20:31and then I get frustrated with myself.
00:20:33But it's because of the phones.
00:20:35Take your head down a little bit.
00:20:40Breathing out.
00:20:42Open those lungs.
00:20:44Open the chest.
00:20:46I'm breathing out.
00:20:48Stop it.
00:20:49It's all right.
00:20:50Good.
00:20:50Let the laughter out.
00:20:52Hug your knees in this position.
00:20:54We're just going to roll on our back.
00:20:56My bum might explode in the video.
00:20:59Any sort of sports I've ever done in my life,
00:21:01because I'm just crap at it,
00:21:02it becomes sort of a mindset thing of like,
00:21:04oh, well, I just won't bother then.
00:21:06And I think that I've done that a lot in my life as well,
00:21:08which is a downfall, I think.
00:21:10It's important that we allow ourselves
00:21:13to experience things without judgement.
00:21:16Just gently have a go.
00:21:18Do it as best you can.
00:21:19No-one's judging round here.
00:21:21It's fine.
00:21:22So just hold the leg wherever you can
00:21:25and see if you can balance on that leg,
00:21:28breathing in.
00:21:30And breathing out.
00:21:32Bridie seems to be the only one
00:21:34properly embracing the stretch.
00:21:37I kind of thought that that was going to be a bit silly,
00:21:39but it actually wasn't.
00:21:40Just feeling, like, really relaxed.
00:21:42Very zen.
00:21:44Erm, namaste.
00:21:49So, Uma, do you not cook at high?
00:21:52I've never cooked in my life.
00:21:53One time when I tried to make a pot noodle,
00:21:55it got ruined.
00:21:56I just can't believe I've met someone worse than me.
00:21:58Yeah.
00:21:59Like, I don't cook, but I could probably do a pot noodle.
00:22:02Well, what's up?
00:22:04As they all took into breakfast, Uma's mind is on more pressing matters.
00:22:09I need an iron.
00:22:11You need an iron?
00:22:12Yeah, I need an iron.
00:22:12I've got an iron.
00:22:13Can I borrow it?
00:22:14Shall we talk about what you can do for me first?
00:22:16Yeah, well, it depends.
00:22:18Just trade.
00:22:18No, no, all of you.
00:22:20So we've all got to work for his iron?
00:22:21I've got to work for my iron.
00:22:23Well...
00:22:24Ben wants Uma and the others to learn the hard way.
00:22:28At Cheyenne, the group always comes first.
00:22:31We're going to do a little task this morning
00:22:32that everyone who comes to join us here at Cheyenne
00:22:35has to do at some point.
00:22:37It's the least pleasant task of living here.
00:22:40Oh, no, no, no.
00:22:41No, I'm not going to...
00:22:42I'm not doing it.
00:22:43I'm not emptying that at the toilet.
00:22:44No, I'm not doing it either, babe.
00:22:45No.
00:22:46We're not doing that.
00:22:46So, when we finish with the compost loo,
00:22:49we close it down and it stays for a few months.
00:22:53It's just closed.
00:22:55One of the main things you need in community
00:22:58is you need a sense of joined-up purpose.
00:23:01People have to be happy to help other people,
00:23:04which is a big ask often.
00:23:06And when you open it up, inside, it's just soil.
00:23:10At the moment, we ask for five hours a week.
00:23:13You might do apple pressing or cleaning or building.
00:23:18Lots and lots of jobs.
00:23:20So we're going to dig a hole,
00:23:20then we're going to fill it up with the contents of a loo.
00:23:23The job has to be done.
00:23:28Still to come.
00:23:29Wow.
00:23:29Smell it. It doesn't smell.
00:23:31Honestly.
00:23:31We're going to say no to that.
00:23:33There's a close encounter of the turd kind.
00:23:35Oh, no, that's grim.
00:23:37Look at that.
00:23:38That is that mouldy diarrhoea.
00:23:39And Bridie starts to question her lifestyle choices.
00:23:43Sorry, I don't know why I'm going to cry.
00:23:44Oh, thanks.
00:23:52Guys.
00:23:54Oh, my days.
00:23:55Look at that.
00:23:57Down in Cornwall, our unrepentant shopaholics are trying to come to terms with commune life.
00:24:02This is a look.
00:24:04Trust me, girls are going to be walking around with their hair next on after this.
00:24:09They may never think about what they throw away at home.
00:24:12But here, the reality of waste is inescapable.
00:24:16Here's going to be a hole.
00:24:18Yeah.
00:24:18And then we're going to put the contents of that in the hole.
00:24:22And then we're going to put the soil over the top of it.
00:24:25And forget about it for about three years.
00:24:28Compost loos may be green, but they come with one very real responsibility.
00:24:33Sharing the load.
00:24:35I've not had, like, a proper labouring kind of job in, like, two years.
00:24:40I've been making TikToks.
00:24:42So, the most manual labour I'm doing is tidying my bedroom.
00:24:46So, Bridie and Umar get in there a little bit and then...
00:24:49Oh!
00:24:50..saffron.
00:24:51Sorry!
00:24:52See?
00:24:53Everyone's doing it.
00:24:55Umar's also unfamiliar with hard labour.
00:24:58Though he works part-time in retail, he believes he's destined for greater things.
00:25:04I've always had this thing that I'm not meant to work.
00:25:08There was just something inside of me that was like,
00:25:10no, there's something else meant for you.
00:25:11So, I think, in my brain, I'm just like, why am I working when I already know
00:25:16it's not something I'm going to do forever?
00:25:19Has anyone ever left after doing this?
00:25:21No.
00:25:22Oh.
00:25:23You might get a first today.
00:25:25I don't really understand how cleaning the loo makes me at one with the loo.
00:25:30It's because we feel better knowing that our turds aren't floating out into Falmouth Bay.
00:25:36We're in, like, a pressure cooker with everything in life.
00:25:40So, to then add this into it, why am I going to go and wee in a ditch
00:25:45when my life's already hard?
00:25:47I think we're good for the hole now.
00:25:49The next part is move the soil.
00:25:53Oh, that's shit. Oh, that's shit.
00:25:56You good?
00:25:56It's not shit.
00:25:57Yeah, what's that?
00:25:58It just, like, looks like soil with sawdust in it, to be honest.
00:26:01Come here, come here.
00:26:02I'm good.
00:26:03No, come see it.
00:26:03I'm real good.
00:26:06Ben's message isn't exactly sinking in for Saffron and Umar.
00:26:10I don't know why they have these toilets.
00:26:12Like, why are you doing that?
00:26:13Like, 20 people really aren't going to make that much of a difference.
00:26:15So, it's not really helping the environment, is it?
00:26:19You're basically torturing yourself.
00:26:21It's weird.
00:26:23Couple of shovels.
00:26:24But yet again, Bridie is the one getting stuck in.
00:26:28This is actually so minor.
00:26:29I can't lie.
00:26:31Oh, good on you, Bridie.
00:26:32There's still chunks of poo, like.
00:26:35There's no poo in there.
00:26:37That's just all broken down into soil.
00:26:39Oh, wow.
00:26:41It doesn't smell.
00:26:42No, we're going to say no to that.
00:26:44Right, guys, who's going next?
00:26:46I can pull the wheelbarrow.
00:26:47Yeah, do that.
00:26:48Yay!
00:26:49Oh, no, that's grim.
00:26:50Look at that.
00:26:51That is that mouldy diarrhoea.
00:26:53Ben, I'd better be getting my iron for this.
00:26:56I'd better be getting my iron.
00:26:57When you move the wheelbarrow, you're one step closer to the iron, yeah?
00:27:01Eventually, the lure of borrowing Ben's iron means Umar grudgingly gets his hands dirty.
00:27:08Was that as bad as you thought, yes or no?
00:27:10No.
00:27:11Hey!
00:27:12There you go.
00:27:13So, saffron, now it's your turn.
00:27:15I'm just going to respectfully decline because I want to be able to, like, eat later and,
00:27:18like, sit in my bed and not feel dirty.
00:27:21I thought it was going to be, like, log, log, log, piss, all flooding towards me, and the fact
00:27:31I was just stood there like, yeah, let's go with it, is actually a bit baffling.
00:27:35But I'm really glad that I did.
00:27:37There we go.
00:27:39I really needed that iron so bad, so I'm okay with getting my hands dirty for it.
00:27:43As long as I never had to pick it up with my own hands, I'm fine.
00:27:48Surprise!
00:27:48Yes.
00:27:49You kept your promise.
00:27:50Thanks.
00:27:51I'll keep mine.
00:27:52Bye!
00:27:52So happy with this.
00:27:54And I'll be putting it to you straight away.
00:27:58It's not a spectator sport, being at Cheyenne.
00:28:00It's a full contact sport.
00:28:02People either get that or run away screaming.
00:28:09Even with a perfectly pressed outfit, Umar is still not happy.
00:28:14Can't lie, I am in the slump right now.
00:28:17This feels like human torture.
00:28:19Every day I wake up and I remind myself, OK, four days left, three days left, two days left.
00:28:23I can't wait until the day where it's, like, no days left.
00:28:26Hi!
00:28:26Hi!
00:28:27Ben, Tash and their daughter Lola have lived at Cheyenne for almost two years
00:28:32in a customised old American school bus.
00:28:35But Umar doesn't get the appeal.
00:28:38I'm really intrigued though.
00:28:39Like, did you guys always want to live the simple life?
00:28:42We used to live in London.
00:28:43You worked in advertising.
00:28:45I worked as a dancer in the city.
00:28:48We went and got a house.
00:28:49And then came lockdown.
00:28:51Ben lost his job.
00:28:52We couldn't pay the mortgage.
00:28:53And we had to do something.
00:28:54We had to change our lives.
00:28:55So we ended up buying the bus.
00:28:56That's really cool.
00:28:59Tash runs the year-round allotments.
00:29:01And she's on a mission to show our shoppers that not everything worth having comes ready-made.
00:29:07I probably get about two to three takeaways a day.
00:29:10As a single person, to buy your own food shopping, it costs you more money.
00:29:16And you guys are just going to fill up, scoop it up, pop it on and pass it down.
00:29:20Why would I cook when I can just Uber everything in?
00:29:23I don't really save that much by cooking and I also waste my energy.
00:29:26So, yeah, thank God for Uber Eats.
00:29:30Tash wants to persuade her novice gardeners that good food comes from the soil, not a delivery app.
00:29:37So, part of the wonderful thing about living at Cheyenne is that we can pick them fresh.
00:29:42And they're not treated with chemicals, so they do go off quickly.
00:29:46But you've grown them and you eat what you can and you share out.
00:29:49So, there's no waste.
00:29:51Just popping it under the soil a little bit, making sure.
00:29:53One per square?
00:29:54One per square.
00:29:55I like to be busy.
00:29:57Boring to me.
00:29:58This whole life is very still and that doesn't pump me of anything.
00:30:04It doesn't make me feel like, yes, I love this.
00:30:06It's the opposite for me.
00:30:08Busy makes me feel like, yes, I love this.
00:30:10Well done.
00:30:11Your first baby plants.
00:30:13Aw.
00:30:14Two out of ten.
00:30:17Job done.
00:30:19Tash wants to know if any of her green-fingered wisdom is beginning to take root.
00:30:23Cheers, everybody.
00:30:25Well done.
00:30:26Cheers.
00:30:27Do you think spending a bit of this time at Cheyenne will make you any more interested
00:30:32in going out and sitting on the grass or maybe looking at the stars a bit more?
00:30:37I think no.
00:30:40I love this for you guys.
00:30:41I think it's beautiful but I don't see this working for me.
00:30:45We're doing this lifestyle not just because we enjoy it but because it's sustainable for
00:30:51the planet.
00:30:51When I'm not here anymore I'd like there to be somewhere nice for other people to live.
00:30:55That's the complete opposite of me.
00:30:57Mm.
00:30:58In what way?
00:30:59I do live life for myself only but it's my own life.
00:31:03Who else am I going to live it for?
00:31:04Do you know what I mean?
00:31:06Former convenience queen Bridie is starting to see the light.
00:31:09I think it's quite inspirational.
00:31:11What you guys have got going here.
00:31:13I am worried about like, sorry I don't know why I'm going to cry.
00:31:17Okay.
00:31:18It's deep things.
00:31:19It's emotional.
00:31:20It's funny yourself.
00:31:20If you feel it, you feel it.
00:31:23I often feel like guilty like getting like parcels, like PR, get sent to me, I wear it
00:31:31for a video, chuck it in the bin.
00:31:33Packaging, packaging, packaging, the amount of rubbish.
00:31:36It makes me feel like shit but it's my job.
00:31:40Initially you're like, yeah, parcels.
00:31:42And then you unbox them and that tiny five seconds of dopamine that you get is over.
00:31:47I've got all this packaging.
00:31:49That's kind of disgusting.
00:31:51Yeah, when I worked in events, you know, it was, you know, we put on a multi-million
00:31:55pound event and half of it would go in the bin because it was just for one thing
00:31:59and that's one of the other reasons that we thought we'd leave that.
00:32:02I feel your pain.
00:32:03But it's learning to be kind to yourself because it's not just our individual choices.
00:32:07We haven't made the society.
00:32:09I feel it.
00:32:10I feel it.
00:32:10I'm going to come and squeeze it because it's how we're living.
00:32:15Go and give her a hug.
00:32:16He's so cute.
00:32:18I just felt this like urge to cry and like, I'm really not cry baby.
00:32:23I don't cry like that.
00:32:24There comes a point where it's not fun and cool anymore.
00:32:27I mean, I don't think it aligns with what my values are.
00:32:39The outfit today is so good.
00:32:42I'm really enjoying being here.
00:32:44I had a bit of a moment yesterday where I cried.
00:32:46The others, it's kind of reaffirmed how much they love their life and I think for me it's kind of
00:32:51tearing my life apart and I'm kind of figuring out what I want and stuff.
00:32:58Cheyenne's survival literally grows on trees.
00:33:01There's over 650 of them bearing apples waiting to be turned into juice and vinegar to keep the whole community
00:33:08afloat.
00:33:10Apple juice production is our main source of income.
00:33:13We mix these together to make a blend of Cornish apple juice which we sell.
00:33:17Our first call is always washing.
00:33:20It's Apple Fair Week.
00:33:22Cheyenne's biggest chance to turn Apple products into cash.
00:33:25So they need stock ready in bulk.
00:33:28Roll up your sleeves.
00:33:29It's muddy, right?
00:33:30Yeah, it's muddy but we're cleaning the mud off.
00:33:32It's important.
00:33:32Do you not put any chemicals in there to wash it?
00:33:35It's an organic farm.
00:33:36Just like the rest of Cheyenne's residents, Ben expects Bridie, Umar and Saffron to put in an unpaid shift to
00:33:44help with the business.
00:33:45We're at the Seven Dwarfs.
00:33:47Something Umar still can't wrap his head around.
00:33:50Better than working at TK Maxx?
00:33:52It's better at TK Maxx because I get paid and I don't have to do like a lot of work.
00:33:56Yeah, but this is our job.
00:33:57Yeah, but do you get paid for it?
00:33:59Well, we get to live here.
00:34:00We don't get a minimum wage.
00:34:01The way the community works is we don't see the money, we don't have to pay rent.
00:34:05Because it goes back in.
00:34:06Yeah, so it's like you living at TK Maxx.
00:34:08Right.
00:34:09Yeah, you live upstairs.
00:34:10They don't give you any wages, you live in a cupboard upstairs.
00:34:13So you work to live here then?
00:34:14Yeah.
00:34:15I don't really understand what they're trying to do because like, yeah, you're living here and you have to work
00:34:19to live here.
00:34:20I don't work to live at my house.
00:34:22Do you know what I mean?
00:34:23Imagine doing this like twice a week.
00:34:26No, that's an absolute joke.
00:34:28Get me out of here.
00:34:29Yeah, that's it.
00:34:30Keep going.
00:34:31Come on, we got it.
00:34:33I think we're there, aren't we?
00:34:35Though unimpressed with the compost loo or gardening, put a pile of apples in front of Saffron and watch her
00:34:41go.
00:34:41Right, go on then you two, off you go.
00:34:44All right, Mum.
00:34:45Uma, give me a crate and get a crate for yourself.
00:34:48Right, put these there, stack that on there.
00:34:51This is the first time I've seen Saf get into something and kind of have her thing.
00:34:55Do that one, babe.
00:34:56She was kind of like bossing Uma around.
00:34:58He was like her little assistant and I think she quite likes that.
00:35:01I think she likes bossing men around.
00:35:04You're loving it. Why so much?
00:35:06I think because I found that I could be a leader in this and that's my natural habitat to lead.
00:35:11You and I shouldn't work together to clash.
00:35:13No, no, no, because we're both alpha so we'd clash.
00:35:16But we could still be friends.
00:35:18When we was in there I was just thinking, these guys actually want to sell these products.
00:35:22This is a real thing that they really do so let's actually help because they're accommodating us so we can
00:35:27do it back.
00:35:31Oh, it's quick.
00:35:32I thought this was like a whole long process.
00:35:35Do you know what surprises me, Babu?
00:35:38The fact that you all do this just for the sake of living here, the community.
00:35:44Rather than it be, because I'm only used to seeing people doing things for a profit.
00:35:48Have you ever had no money?
00:35:50Yes, I grew up with no money.
00:35:51That's dire.
00:35:52That's really bad.
00:35:53And some months I'm in a real bad situation myself.
00:35:56Which is why I have a lot of assets, things that I can sell.
00:36:00So if it gets that bad.
00:36:01It's always on your mind and you're aware of it.
00:36:03Every single month I am constantly thinking about how do I get this money.
00:36:07I think I enjoy buying very expensive things because, and this is the real truth,
00:36:12because I was brought up with nothing and so being able to provide for myself is quite astonishing.
00:36:18Sometimes things would get bad, like we'd have to have water with our cereal because there was no milk that
00:36:22day or that week.
00:36:23And I saw my mum struggle, but I also saw my mum being such a strong power unit.
00:36:29And so I took that, span it a little bit, and now here I am.
00:36:33And what bits of the lifestyle that you've got that don't resonate with you?
00:36:37I'm asexual and celibate.
00:36:39Oh, babe. That's cool.
00:36:41Yeah, which it is, but the whole job is extremely sexualised.
00:36:44Yeah.
00:36:44So then I have to put on this constant persona of something that I don't even believe in.
00:36:48You're selling your soul, girl.
00:36:50Oh, babe, I know.
00:36:51I know.
00:36:52And it is for finance and it is for money, but it also is the only thing that I've ever
00:36:55known how to do, really.
00:36:56God bless you, babe.
00:36:57When I was at school, I really wanted to be a journalist and I still stand by that.
00:37:01I think I would be a fabulous journalist.
00:37:04But that just never worked out for me.
00:37:05I needed money and I needed money fast.
00:37:07You need to look after yourself first and foremost.
00:37:10Have strong boundaries.
00:37:11Yeah.
00:37:12Definitely.
00:37:13And you're a beautiful soul. You've got it.
00:37:15From the moment I got here, Babu, we gravitated towards each other.
00:37:19And I think that's because he just strikes me as someone who's had a complicated life as well, who has
00:37:25overcome it.
00:37:26And I think he sees I am not the overcome yet and he wants to try and get me there,
00:37:30which I really deeply appreciate.
00:37:32But he's also got a really, like, soft, understanding, patient energy.
00:37:36And that's something that I need.
00:37:38Well done.
00:37:39We've made 162 bottles of juice.
00:37:42Wow!
00:37:43That's it!
00:37:44If we sold all that, you'd be...
00:37:46Over the moon.
00:37:47Okay, that's a challenge.
00:37:48Thank you very much, guys.
00:37:50Well done.
00:37:51Still to come.
00:37:52I feel like something's been lifted off me.
00:37:54Umar is still not at one with nature.
00:37:57I'm not an animal.
00:37:58I don't deserve to have a spider on me when I'm in a shower.
00:38:02And what starts as a fun trip to the circus ends in tears.
00:38:06This experience has brought so many emotions you would never think of in your life to the surface.
00:38:19Three compulsive consumers have given up shopping sprees to try living with less for a week.
00:38:25My body clock's not used to this life.
00:38:27The sun, the bright daylight, I'm like, meh!
00:38:31After getting their hands dirty, Bridie and Umar brave the communal bathhouse.
00:38:37Wow!
00:38:37Look at that!
00:38:39Oh, and they've put a little bit of incense on for me.
00:38:42Definitely gonna be super relaxing.
00:38:44And Bridie's starting to see the upside of going back to basics.
00:38:48Shower complete.
00:38:50Sorry, look at that in the back.
00:38:52I'm loving all this scenery, honestly.
00:38:54It's literally magical here.
00:38:55I've not even dried myself properly.
00:38:58It's because of the walk in fresh air, just wearing towels.
00:39:03Erm...
00:39:04I'll let nature dry me.
00:39:05But for city boy Umar, the great outdoors has officially gone too far.
00:39:11The most traumatic thing happened to me.
00:39:14I was having a shower outside like I'm an animal.
00:39:17And an actual insect, like a massive spider came and landed on me once I was like...
00:39:22I'm washing my hands.
00:39:23Oh, it was gross.
00:39:24I quickly smacked it out.
00:39:26I don't even know if it's dead.
00:39:27So now it's probably, like, bad luck for me for eight years.
00:39:30It's a joke.
00:39:31I'm not an animal.
00:39:32I don't deserve to have a spider on me once I'm in the shower.
00:39:39Money is always a bit of a juggling act at Cheyenne.
00:39:43Wow!
00:39:45That'll be you in a minute, babe.
00:39:46Yeah.
00:39:47So, alongside the apple farm, they fundraise with a summer circus,
00:39:51as well as teaching acrobatics and aerial skills all year round.
00:39:56The circus and the farm pick up the slack from each other.
00:39:59The more strings to your bow you have, the more likely you are to survive
00:40:02in this cost of living crisis world that we live in.
00:40:06After a long day's work, Umar, Saffron and Bridie are heading even further out of their comfort zones.
00:40:13Hello.
00:40:14Welcome, guys.
00:40:15This is where we have all of our shows.
00:40:18And today we're going to do an aerial workshop.
00:40:21Former dancer Tash and pro-acrobat Rachel want our image-obsessed trio to ditch the mirrors
00:40:27and discover a whole new way to express themselves.
00:40:31So, first of all, thumbs around the bar.
00:40:34And then you tuck into a little ball and flex your feet so they come underneath the bar.
00:40:40And hocks your knees on.
00:40:43So, this is called hocks.
00:40:46You then try and let go and see if you can hang by your knees.
00:40:49I need to get my foot up a little bit.
00:40:52Okay, who wants to do the first hocks?
00:40:54I'm wearing.
00:40:55You're wearing?
00:40:57Yes.
00:40:58Boom.
00:40:59And then knees on.
00:41:00And see if you can let go.
00:41:01Ah, this hurts.
00:41:02It does hurt.
00:41:04Well done!
00:41:05Woo!
00:41:08So, if you sink down, so you've got straight arms.
00:41:11He's got this, he's so got this.
00:41:13Now, see if you can get one foot to the bar.
00:41:15That's it.
00:41:16Yes!
00:41:18Well, I'm not even going to try, babe.
00:41:21So...
00:41:21You're going to try?
00:41:22Oh, I'm not going to.
00:41:23I love it, I watch it.
00:41:25True to form, Bridie jumps right in.
00:41:28Yes!
00:41:31And at last, Umar's discovered an activity he seems genuinely enthusiastic about.
00:41:37Umar's absolutely killing it.
00:41:40And I'm loving seeing this, like, really confident side of him come out.
00:41:45It's really nice to see.
00:41:47The morning was a big struggle for me.
00:41:49I was ready to pack my bags and go home.
00:41:51But coming here, this has probably been the most fun I've had.
00:41:55Meanwhile, Saffron is hanging back.
00:41:57Do you want to have a go?
00:41:58No thanks, babe.
00:41:59A little go?
00:42:00I'm alright, thank you, honey.
00:42:01No worries.
00:42:01Being around children reminds her of her unhappy school days.
00:42:06When I was growing up, I was extremely bullied, to the point of, I had no friends, I wouldn't leave
00:42:12the house, I was literally her mirror and my family were very concerned about me.
00:42:15I've never even done a roly-poly in my life, let alone all this.
00:42:20I think that's probably a lot of, like, missing a lot of school.
00:42:24Because you do all them kind of, you know, that hands-down roly-poly.
00:42:27Yeah, that's where I learned gymnastics.
00:42:28Yeah.
00:42:29Are you going to go again?
00:42:31It frightens me, honey.
00:42:33So, I love watching you, I think you're brilliant, but it really, really frightens me.
00:42:38OK.
00:42:40It's the weirdest thing, because going into this, I thought that this would be fun, I knew I was going
00:42:46to be terrible at it, and that would have been banter.
00:42:48But I think what I quickly realised is that tiny things like roly-poly and hands-down, you're, like, taught
00:42:54that in school and you're taught that amongst friends.
00:42:56And I think because, I don't know why this is getting me sad, because I don't even care anymore, but
00:43:01because I was so, so atrociously bullied and, like, every lunch I'd sit in the bathroom on my own.
00:43:09Like, I never had that opportunity to, like, play and learn these things.
00:43:15I think I started crying at how good you was.
00:43:19A lot of my life has just been me being an adult, and so when I get into these very,
00:43:24like, playful situations, I don't know how to cope.
00:43:26It's just made me upset, and I didn't want to get upset in front of the kids, so I just
00:43:29took myself away.
00:43:31I really, really hope that you carry on with this, because you're so good.
00:43:35You really are, and you look so pretty in your dress.
00:43:39This experience has brought so many emotions to the surface, because I've just suppressed everything, and now I'm like a
00:43:46boiling kettle.
00:43:47HE LAUGHS
00:43:49HE LAUGHS
00:43:57With the Apple Fair only days away, Ben and Brett need help with constructing one of the big tops, but
00:44:04one of the shoppers is a no-show.
00:44:06What's happened to Saffron? Is she taking the morning off?
00:44:09We're just giving her a bit of space, and hopefully she'll be back with us later.
00:44:13I think I could do with that.
00:44:14Don't leave us. So, yeah, look, here you go.
00:44:16This is one of our big tops. She's called Sunshine, and I'm going to teach you how to hit a
00:44:21tent pegging.
00:44:22Umar and Bridie lend a hand.
00:44:25That's it. That's the swing. It's heavy, isn't it?
00:44:34HE LAUGHS
00:44:35But after last night's circus class brought up unexpected emotions, Saffron steps away from the commune to reflect on the
00:44:43direction her life has taken.
00:44:45I know that I need to do work on myself, for sure.
00:44:52Their work done, Bridie and Umar are about to get mystical, because at Cheyenne, it's not about stuff, it's about
00:45:00spirit.
00:45:01The place where my yurt is, it's just got such a magical energy. You can just feel it. It's supercharged,
00:45:08and it's otherworldly.
00:45:10Susannah, the resident shaman, has decided they are ready for some feather smudging and aura cleansing.
00:45:18Have you worked much with energy before?
00:45:21I'm dipping my toe into the spiritual world.
00:45:22Are you? Yeah.
00:45:23But I'm very much a beginner.
00:45:26TikToker Bridie's time at Cheyenne is reminding her that life didn't always revolve around likes and followers.
00:45:32I could feel it from you. Could you?
00:45:34Yeah, when I first met you, you have really good energy, good aura.
00:45:37Oh, thank you.
00:45:37She may have thousands of fans, but somewhere along the way, she's lost touch with herself.
00:45:43I would absolutely love to meditate. I definitely have time for it. I just need to put my phone down,
00:45:48bet you.
00:45:48Yeah, I believe in God, so this is different.
00:45:52So, as a shamanic practitioner, I help to shift energy through the body.
00:45:58If you'd like to stand there, Bridie.
00:46:01Put your arms out.
00:46:03So, it's the smoke that helps to cleanse your auric field, and then we use this tool, too, to move
00:46:10the smoke and move the energy around.
00:46:12So, just around your head and then down your centre.
00:46:16If it's all right, I'm just going to go outside for one second.
00:46:18You OK, yeah? Yeah, yeah.
00:46:19OK.
00:46:21While Bridie continues to embrace her smudging, Umar's spiritual spring clean is over.
00:46:29When she lit the stage up, I got like this tightening in my chest, so it was like something was
00:46:35telling me that that's not the environment for me.
00:46:38How does that feel?
00:46:38Yeah, I feel like quite calm.
00:46:40Yeah? Oh, good.
00:46:41I feel like, I don't know, something's been lifted off me.
00:46:45Yeah.
00:46:45Oh, good.
00:46:50Bridie's not the only one thinking about her life choices.
00:46:53Umar's circus class has reconnected him with what really makes him happy.
00:46:59When I was younger, I was always into art, fashion, acting, so it was all really different.
00:47:05Since his mum died three years ago, he started studying criminology, but Cheyenne has him wondering if he's really on
00:47:12the right path.
00:47:13My mum wanted me to go to university and get a degree. I never really wanted to go to university.
00:47:18What?
00:47:19It's like her last wish that I want to fulfil. I know that she's up and down on me, I
00:47:23just want to do it for her.
00:47:24But, would I rather focus on the creative side of things?
00:47:28Babu wants to give him another chance to scratch his creative itch by introducing him to Rick, a musician who
00:47:35handcrafts Native American instruments.
00:47:40Hey.
00:47:40Hey.
00:47:41Come on in.
00:47:46I'm going to play some flute and then you guys just sort of come in and accompany me.
00:47:51If you just pick that one up from me and you match me and play what I'm playing.
00:48:01How's that feel?
00:48:07I'm going to play to what you're playing, so don't even worry about me. You just keep that solid.
00:48:27It's definitely surprised me. I thought I had no musical talent. I tried to play the guitar once, just gave
00:48:32up.
00:48:33But yeah, it was actually, the drums are a lot more easier to play than I thought that they would
00:48:36be.
00:48:36How's that, man?
00:48:38Yeah, yeah, that was good.
00:48:39We're going to be playing at this apple fair here.
00:48:41Right.
00:48:42Will you come join me?
00:48:43Yeah, for sure.
00:48:44Yeah?
00:48:44Yeah.
00:48:46I feel like coming here has definitely made me tap into my creative side again and I definitely want to
00:48:53try and pursue a little bit more.
00:48:58With saffron still missing in action, Babu invites Bridie and Umar to trade chores for a Cheyenne style night out
00:49:06on the beach.
00:49:08We're going to have a fire and share some cacao around the fire.
00:49:13I'm going to start passing this road.
00:49:15This isn't your average hot chocolate.
00:49:18Drinking cacao is a sacred Mayan and Aztec ritual said to open the heart.
00:49:24I'm going to have oak first.
00:49:29Love and connection and being to us all.
00:49:33Do I just pass it?
00:49:35Say something in your mind or out loud.
00:49:37OK.
00:49:38Love and light.
00:49:39Love and light.
00:49:40The less sacred ritual of the silent disco has its roots in the 90s rave scene.
00:49:45And DJ Babu is the man to kick off the party.
00:49:50Dancing on the beach.
00:49:57The music's really good.
00:49:59Good, isn't it?
00:49:59Yeah.
00:50:00How often have you done silent disco on the beach?
00:50:02Never.
00:50:04Come on.
00:50:07Good music, isn't it?
00:50:08Yeah.
00:50:08It's a good evening.
00:50:10It's a good evening.
00:50:10Hopefully they'll embrace it and enjoy.
00:50:13Just let the music move them.
00:50:14Do you want to get in the water?
00:50:21We're going to get a panoony off.
00:50:24It takes a little warming up, but the Cheyenne effect is kicking in and Umar and Bridie are
00:50:29getting into the rhythm of it.
00:50:32Oh, it's the entreeing.
00:50:33I really love it here.
00:50:34You feel really grounded.
00:50:36This is so good.
00:50:37I know that it is an aphrodisiac, so it does make you feel those, like, love emotions.
00:50:42But I'm definitely feeling it.
00:50:44Different to anything I've done before.
00:50:46I do like it.
00:50:50Feels like there's no judgement and you can kind of just, like, do what you want.
00:50:53I'm enjoying it.
00:51:00Still to come, Saffron is welcomed back into the fold.
00:51:04It's an emotional experience here.
00:51:06I needed to sort of take a minute and now I'm ready to come back.
00:51:09And the super shoppers get a chance to put their retail skills to the test.
00:51:14Do you like it?
00:51:15We worked really hard for it.
00:51:16No, I'm all good at it.
00:51:18Alright, that sounded a bit desperate.
00:51:27The peace and quiet of the Cornish countryside has given Saffron a chance to reflect.
00:51:32Did you have a good rest?
00:51:33I did.
00:51:34I had a really lovely rest and I kind of needed it.
00:51:37I know.
00:51:38I saw that.
00:51:38Yeah, it's an emotional experience here.
00:51:41I needed to sort of take a minute and now I'm ready to come back.
00:51:44That's beautiful.
00:51:45It's time for a heart-to-heart with her favourite Cheyenne resident, Babu.
00:51:50We all had some cacao.
00:51:51OK.
00:51:52I'd like to share some with you.
00:51:53Yeah.
00:51:54I'm scared.
00:51:55Don't be scared.
00:51:56It's just hot chocolate.
00:51:57OK.
00:51:57Posh hot chocolate.
00:51:59Posh.
00:52:00Who seems to be able to see into her soul.
00:52:03I think your energy is so calm, so real.
00:52:06I've got some health problems and being stressed doesn't help any of them.
00:52:10I'm sorry.
00:52:11Yeah, that's scary.
00:52:12It's part of life, isn't it?
00:52:13We all carry these bits of luggage with us.
00:52:16Luggage.
00:52:16You can either wear it on your arm or just get on with it.
00:52:20I used to be self-sabotaging all the time without even realising it, you know.
00:52:24Sometimes I can be that way too.
00:52:25Even with this experience, I think that I'm self-sabotaging.
00:52:29You are a bird.
00:52:30Yes.
00:52:31I think that Babu is probably just the most purist soul.
00:52:36Like, he makes you speak and he makes you talk and he makes you think about things.
00:52:39I keep repeating patterns.
00:52:42Mm.
00:52:42So in my actual life, I have like this character, this role that I'm very good at playing.
00:52:48And I was hoping to come here and shed that person entirely.
00:52:52But I keep going back to it because it's where I feel safe.
00:52:55Yeah.
00:52:56It's one step at a time.
00:52:58Mm.
00:52:59Yeah.
00:53:00We're all here to help you.
00:53:01Even after this.
00:53:03Oh.
00:53:04I mean that.
00:53:05I believe I felt that one in my soul.
00:53:07I did.
00:53:08I see you.
00:53:09Not you.
00:53:10I see you in there.
00:53:11I know.
00:53:12I know.
00:53:12There's so much more to you than what you've portrayed.
00:53:17You know, you said, at one point you said, this is all I know and it's not.
00:53:20I think the lines get blurred when I say, oh, I'm being this character, I was hoping that
00:53:26that was a facade.
00:53:27The suitcases you came with, that's like a year's supply.
00:53:30That's probably all my clothes.
00:53:33And then I kind of wanted to run away from the experience because I was a bit disappointed,
00:53:38which would have been self-sabotaging.
00:53:41But now I'm back, so.
00:53:44Probably.
00:53:44It's probably about like 1% of my wardrobe.
00:53:48Probably.
00:53:49I go with a couple of carrier bags.
00:53:52Saturday is market day.
00:53:55Umar, Saffron and Bridie have been tasked with trying to flog Cheyenne's apple juice and
00:53:59cider vinegar to locals at a farmer's market.
00:54:02We're here to try and sell as much as we can to as many of the people who are here.
00:54:06Finally, it's their natural habitat.
00:54:09A chance for our trio to dust off their retail know-how and put it to work.
00:54:14Would you like a try of the apple juice?
00:54:16Oh, yeah, I love it.
00:54:17We made it ourselves.
00:54:18Do you like that?
00:54:19Yeah, I do.
00:54:20I'll have a small one.
00:54:21Amazing.
00:54:22Ben's thrown down the gauntlet.
00:54:24Outsell last week's £120 takings.
00:54:27So let the competition begin.
00:54:30And it's organic.
00:54:32100%.
00:54:32While Bridie mans the stall, Saffron takes charge of the mobile sales team.
00:54:38Does anyone want to try some apple juice?
00:54:40Right now we've got a very good deal on.
00:54:42So this bottle here is only £3.
00:54:45All the stockbroker customers always say to me, you should work for us.
00:54:48I guess my skill set is getting things out of people.
00:54:51She's even managed to whip the normally work-shy Uma into shape.
00:54:56I want to go shopping, though.
00:54:57I don't want to keep selling stuff.
00:54:59No, you can't start moaning now, Uma.
00:55:01It's not the time.
00:55:03£4.50 for the big bottle.
00:55:05Excellent.
00:55:06I'll buy the bigger one.
00:55:07We worked really hard for it, so...
00:55:09I'm all good, actually.
00:55:10Aww.
00:55:11All right, that sounded a bit desperate.
00:55:13Don't do that.
00:55:13Well, I am desperate.
00:55:15Well, you could just buy it right here.
00:55:17And you do take cash.
00:55:18Enjoy!
00:55:19Cheers.
00:55:19Bye!
00:55:21With sales going well, Saffron tries her hand at the art of the deal.
00:55:26Right, we've got a proposal.
00:55:28So we'll swap here a small bottle, and then in return...
00:55:32How much are these little tiny things?
00:55:33So the basil is...
00:55:34Well, you can have three of those.
00:55:35Let's do that, and then there's one each medium wider here.
00:55:38Yeah.
00:55:39That's what market's about, isn't it?
00:55:41I mean, we all do need a break.
00:55:43Me and you have been working really hard.
00:55:45It might.
00:55:45We've done it for about one minute.
00:55:47That's a lot more than I do at my other jobs.
00:55:49So let's just...
00:55:50Cheers.
00:55:51Cheers to working hard.
00:55:54So...
00:55:54Hi, we got you one of these.
00:55:56Have we got you a cake?
00:55:56Oh!
00:55:57Well, we've done a trade.
00:55:59OK.
00:55:59So we gave them a bottle of apple juice for three cakes.
00:56:02Is it lemon?
00:56:02Yeah, it's so good.
00:56:04What's going on here?
00:56:0525 minutes in, and you need to sit down?
00:56:06We've done a trade for trade.
00:56:08Oh, what did you trade?
00:56:09I traded one of your small apple juices.
00:56:11That cost £3.
00:56:12Yeah.
00:56:13For three snacks that cost £3.75.
00:56:16So I actually got a 75p...
00:56:19For who?
00:56:21For me, Umar and Brent.
00:56:23Well, I'm sharing mine with you.
00:56:24I like the philosophy, but now one of you needs to pay.
00:56:28I'll give you it.
00:56:28I'll give you the money back, Ben.
00:56:30I'm going back to work now, guys.
00:56:32After literally eating into Ben's profits, Saffron and Umar head back out to sell more juice.
00:56:39Would you like to try some apple juice?
00:56:41This is organic, and I made it myself.
00:56:44Half an hour on, they're back with the takings.
00:56:47Profits well and truly squeezed.
00:56:50Ben!
00:56:51Do you know what this means?
00:56:52What does it mean?
00:56:53We've just gone over last week's total.
00:56:55Congratulations.
00:56:57Yay!
00:56:57But it's still not high fives all round.
00:57:00One of you owes me £3 still.
00:57:02Who's paying for that juice?
00:57:03Umar is.
00:57:03Oh, come on, Umar.
00:57:04I can't believe you're making his way.
00:57:06I know, I can't believe that.
00:57:07I can't believe you're giving away my juice for free.
00:57:10I'm trying, I'm trying.
00:57:11Yes, but it's not your juice to give.
00:57:13We've been very unfairly treated today.
00:57:15You think you've been unfairly treated?
00:57:17Not how you treat your stuff at all.
00:57:18Well, this is a product that we've made, right?
00:57:20We made.
00:57:21That we made.
00:57:22No, we have collectively made.
00:57:24No, we made, so we gave our one.
00:57:26Okay, so how did you make it without my apples?
00:57:28It was a trade.
00:57:30And we did.
00:57:30So you have traded our juice for a cake for you.
00:57:35But this was ours.
00:57:36We made it.
00:57:36No, no, no, no.
00:57:38You are mistaken.
00:57:39You've taken £3 from the Cheyenne community
00:57:42and used it to get cake for yourself.
00:57:44I didn't think you cared about money, Ben.
00:57:45No, you're misunderstanding.
00:57:47You're misunderstanding.
00:57:47We do care about money.
00:57:48We care about the money that we need
00:57:50to keep our community upright and working.
00:57:52Sorry, I don't agree.
00:57:54I'm sorry, I don't agree.
00:57:54You don't understand?
00:57:55Do you understand?
00:57:56I understand.
00:57:57Unlike Saffron and Umar,
00:57:59Bridie's now got both her feet inside the Cheyenne camp.
00:58:03You can't trade someone else's thing
00:58:04and then expect to be praised.
00:58:06I think it's ridiculous and maybe a bit immature
00:58:10that they can't see that it's not theirs.
00:58:12So I do not feel a part of this community,
00:58:14so I'm going to quit my job right here, right now.
00:58:16Let's go, Saff.
00:58:17OK.
00:58:17We're quitting two.
00:58:18I've quit as well.
00:58:21I don't think they're quite understanding the community vibe.
00:58:24I don't know whether deep inside they knew that they had done wrong
00:58:28and they were trying to be defensive
00:58:29or whether they didn't understand.
00:58:31But, yeah, we can't be having that.
00:58:34Still to come, the apple fair is on the way.
00:58:38She looks like a queen.
00:58:40And Umar is ready for his drumming debut.
00:58:43I would very much like to invite Umar and Babu
00:58:45to come up here and join me.
00:58:58The final day of our Shopaholics week in a Cornish commune
00:59:02culminates in a celebration of all things apple.
00:59:05The devil works fast, I work faster.
00:59:09Away from the preparations, Umar has asked to speak to Ben alone
00:59:12to clear the air after the bus stop at the market.
00:59:15I think there might have been a bit of change during the week.
00:59:18Do you think, you know, how are you feeling?
00:59:21Coming here has made me realise that time is money, like...
00:59:25Yeah.
00:59:25A piece of paper is just not money, like, multiple things can be money.
00:59:29Yeah, yeah.
00:59:29So it kind of opened my eyes to that.
00:59:31Do you ever, like, miss your old life?
00:59:33Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't.
00:59:35I do think I'm a better person for having given that lifestyle up
00:59:39and I feel more able to help people,
00:59:41which is what I've found that I like doing more
00:59:43than being successful.
00:59:45Right.
00:59:46So the fact that you're saying that you're taking positive things
00:59:49away from living our lifestyle is, like, amazing for me.
00:59:53Yeah, that's like me dropping, like, a grand on shopping.
00:59:56Yeah. Yeah.
00:59:56So do you think maybe you might be able to replace that feeling
01:00:00of, you know, happiness with stuff that's just good about you,
01:00:04not just stuff that you're having to buy?
01:00:06I'd like to think so because when I buy something,
01:00:08that happiness only lasts a good ten minutes.
01:00:11You remember the beginning of the week when we were talking
01:00:12about finding, you know, more of your inner self
01:00:14and your inner happiness.
01:00:15Do you think you've found any of that?
01:00:17Yeah, I think so.
01:00:18Well, I pushed away, like, my creative side.
01:00:20I think being here, not having my phone
01:00:23and actually getting to explore more of that,
01:00:25it's been really fun and I just realised that I still have that in me.
01:00:30Meeting the new people has been quite life-affirming.
01:00:34I hadn't really quite appreciated how much change there would be
01:00:38to actually affect other people
01:00:40and to help them along their journey is quite empowering
01:00:43and it's quite deep.
01:00:48Visitors are beginning to arrive to the Apple Fair,
01:00:50so it's all hands on deck.
01:00:52Hi, yeah, you all right? You here for the Apple Fair?
01:00:55Great, thank you. Thank you.
01:00:57And there's your wristband.
01:00:58And if you would like to just drive down that way...
01:01:00It hasn't all been smooth sailing,
01:01:02but avid TikToker Bridie's found that the real connections
01:01:06she's made at Cheyenne are better than anything online.
01:01:10Picture of an apple.
01:01:11OK.
01:01:12And then Cheyenne Apple Fair.
01:01:15It's harder than it looks.
01:01:17There's the dots making it look mouldy.
01:01:20The thing I'm going to miss the most from being here is
01:01:23if you ever just want to talk to someone,
01:01:24you can go talk to someone and it's a real conversation.
01:01:26They look into your eyes, they hear you, they feel you,
01:01:31they embrace you.
01:01:32No judgement whatsoever.
01:01:33I'm going to really miss that.
01:01:36Straight down the middle like that.
01:01:38Just get your fingers in here and pull this out.
01:01:40For label junkie Umar,
01:01:42time at Cheyenne has been a bit of a personal rebrand.
01:01:45How's this week been for you?
01:01:47It's not as easy as you think, is it?
01:01:52This week has been one of the most craziest experiences of my life.
01:01:57When I first came to Cheyenne, I was like,
01:02:00what type of hippie village am I at?
01:02:02And I thought that this week would be hell for me.
01:02:04It would be torture.
01:02:05But it really wasn't.
01:02:07But you challenged yourself.
01:02:09You know, you could have left.
01:02:10Yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:02:10Oh, I wanted to leave.
01:02:12I saw that.
01:02:13Yeah.
01:02:14But you didn't.
01:02:15I didn't, yeah.
01:02:16It's all the stuff that you've done here, hopefully,
01:02:18helping you move forward in life.
01:02:21And for pampered Princess Saffron,
01:02:23a week away from her home comforts,
01:02:25has given her time to think.
01:02:27You're just going to snip that.
01:02:29There.
01:02:30And then...
01:02:31Beautiful.
01:02:32I think it's just quieter here.
01:02:34And the slower pace of life brings up more.
01:02:37Now we need about...
01:02:38That's the tiara.
01:02:3950.
01:02:4050!
01:02:42The biggest challenge of this week
01:02:44has been the whole bloody week.
01:02:47I know that everyone thought I was going to leave day one,
01:02:51myself included.
01:02:52But no, I stayed the week.
01:02:55We're just going to start gently bending it between our hands
01:02:57so it curves round.
01:02:59We're trying to, yeah, avoid completely snapping it,
01:03:01but just get a bit of movement in it.
01:03:04I'm not proud of myself this week.
01:03:06No.
01:03:07I'm going to be real.
01:03:08I think there's a lot more I could have tried,
01:03:10but there was so much emotion that kept coming over me every time.
01:03:14In every single activity I was finding bits of myself that I'd hidden for so long.
01:03:19Yeah, she looks like a queen.
01:03:22With the prep out of the way, it's time to stop working and start enjoying.
01:03:26The fun of the fair can begin.
01:03:37They've grown.
01:03:37I feel they've all grown.
01:03:39The things that they've taken from here, I hope they take into their own life.
01:03:42They won't even know that they're there, these things that they've taken
01:03:45to make a slightly different choice.
01:03:48I hope that Saffron, Bridie and Umar take from this that there is another way of life.
01:03:54There is a way of life that has less impact on the planet,
01:03:56that is about community.
01:04:02Umar has been keeping his creative talents under wraps,
01:04:05but it's finally his chance to shine.
01:04:09Never?
01:04:10No.
01:04:10Look at you.
01:04:12You're breaking it.
01:04:13I would very much like to invite Umar and Babu to come up here and join me.
01:04:19CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
01:04:32Before coming in here, I used to think that money is everything.
01:04:36And I used to be like, money can buy happiness.
01:04:37I don't think it can, because when I was here,
01:04:40I wasn't even thinking about money, I was thinking about my family.
01:04:42So, there's definitely more important things than money.
01:04:53CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
01:04:55Amazing.
01:04:56Boom there!
01:04:57Yeah! Go on, Umar!
01:05:00Three deers.
01:05:01Three deers.
01:05:03Aww!
01:05:04Nice!
01:05:06Yeah, I think I've just found three friends, to be honest.
01:05:09Yeah, they're all lovely in their own ways.
01:05:12Yeah, when's the next show, guys?
01:05:14Underneath all the masks and everything,
01:05:16they're just like the rest of us,
01:05:18just muddling our way through best we can.
01:05:20Yeah, let me put your hat back on.
01:05:22Cheers.
01:05:23We've crowned the Cheyenne King.
01:05:28I'm feeling quite sad.
01:05:32I just feel really grateful.
01:05:35It's really put things into perspective for me.
01:05:37I think when I get back, there's going to be a few changes.
01:05:41I'm going to be more sustainable.
01:05:42I'm going to try and sit outside with my bare feet in the grass
01:05:45to feel grounded.
