Tigers were one of four MLB teams to not play on Memorial Day.
Transcript
00:00Welcome back from a long weekend. Jim Costa, Stoney in for John Jansen, Heather Park, Gov
00:06and Greg behind the glass as we are ready to roll on a Tuesday. Stoney, good morning.
00:10Good morning. Always good to be with you guys. Heather, did you have a good time on your
00:16Memorial Day? Memorial Day, yes. We had a great Monday. The rest of the weekend kind
00:23of sucked. I know, the weather sucked. I drove back in the rain from Cleveland on Saturday,
00:28so it was just icky. It really was. Swampy, humid. Dreary, kind of. It just, yeah. Yesterday
00:35was fun after getting out of here. Went, took a nap and I couldn't, there weren't tea times
00:41where I played, I couldn't play golf till like later. So I got up and went to the pool and
00:46that was it. Not a bad day. I know. Pool day is a great day. Well, he's not letting on.
00:53We're
00:54dinner plans. Oh. Yeah. We're a little different, that's all. That's okay. You had to go rogue
01:00and I support you. We'll get to it later. Yeah. We didn't have the Tigers' background
01:04noise yesterday. Are you upset about that or is it a relief? Well, as Mike always says,
01:12two things can be true. It was a relief you didn't have to watch the game. But there are
01:15certain things, you know, old school like, you know, Memorial Day baseball. And yes,
01:22our team is not really good. We understand that. But, you know, they've had years where
01:28they were not really good also and they've played on Memorial Day. I wish to go back to
01:34the, you know, time that they used to have Memorial Day, you know, double headers, you know,
01:41not the single, well, the single admission where you get two games. That'll never happen again.
01:47That's what Memorial Day was when I was a kid, you know, or we played, we had a little league
01:52game. That's like when the season actually started was like Memorial Day. They had the parade and all
01:57that kind of stuff. I love that. Yeah. I wish they played yesterday. I ended up watching like a little
02:02bit of Yankees and Royals just because I was looking for some baseball. I didn't watch any baseball
02:06yesterday. Okay. I did. I did watch the basketball and the hockey and my sister texted me. She was
02:11put on ESPN news. What? I said, put on ESPN news. They had on the Ocho, they had the world
02:18championship of table hockey. And I used to play a lot of table hockey when I was a kid. Like
02:23the
02:23bubble hockey? Well, it's like that, but it wasn't without the bubble, like the old school. Right.
02:27Like foosball, but an announcer and the hockey maven Stan Fister was doing the color and was one. It was
02:33bizarre. Was this live? No, I don't think so. No. People can spend their holiday weekend. Yeah.
02:39Good. No, that was, that was last night after dinner. It was like while the, uh, the hockey
02:44game was in between periods and the basketball game was already a blowout. So I actually watched
02:49some of that Yankees Royals too, from the, basically the seventh inning on the Royals were
02:55pretty tigerish. That was, did you see the end? No, I didn't see it. Okay. So Bobby Witt hits
03:00a home run in the bottom of the eighth. So they take a three, two lead. And then, uh,
03:05the Yankees scuffled a few runs together. The Royals bullpen is awful too. It was precious.
03:11Hey, there's nothing like Memorial Day and watching American league central baseball. Yeah.
03:16Like was it an O2 pitch down the middle? There you go, Greg. Are you kidding me? How about
03:20cows? Cows are how to walk off yesterday too. We woke him up against Tampa Bay back to back
03:27walk-offs. You know what it is, Tony? I would have liked to bitch about our baseball team
03:30yesterday. I know, exactly. Oh, we bitched about it enough yesterday when I was in with
03:35you and we can, you know. We can light those lines up today if you'd like, but look, I,
03:39I do wonder, are people writing off the summer? Have we reached that point? OTAs are this
03:45week. Um, so how many days till the NBA draft? Yeah, right. Free agency. NHL draft we don't
03:53care about because the line, the Redleys don't have a first round pick, but yeah, I think a lot
03:59of people are writing it off. But the other thing is a lot of people say, well, you know,
04:02remember what happened in 2024? They're looking for that again. You know, they did pick up a half
04:07game yesterday. They were only a five out of the wild card. Now about 80,000 teams in front of
04:11them,
04:12but you know, uh, I'm pretty close to writing it off and I'm pretty close on saying, you know what,
04:18just pick up the phone, Scott, and start taking offers. And it ain't just, just Scooble. I mean,
04:23Casey Mize was, you know, you know, he had that fight with them over, what was it? 25 grand?
04:29Yeah. Kind of like the Jeff Harding's deal back in the day when he left the Lions for the Steelers
04:33for a stupid, a little amount of money. Yeah. I think it was over pizza toppings. They, uh,
04:39they, they, they couldn't come to terms initially. Casey Mize and the Tigers. It's silly,
04:43silly business. What's he get on it? Yeah. I mean, look, we're about to hit that point,
04:50but if you're Casey Mize, I mean, your worth is at least what Flaherty's making. Oh yeah.
04:55So you're probably talking, I need a deal of at least four years and I need to be making at
04:59least
04:5925 a year. I need a hundred million dollar contract or I'm hitting free agency. And I don't
05:04know if the Tigers should do that either. I mean, so you get what you can. I don't know what
05:08you can
05:08get. You know, maybe you can find a team that you pack a package, Scooble and Mize together. That
05:13would be, you get a pretty decent haul for that. I would try to juice the return.
05:18Yeah. We're being forced into this lane. Yes. Nobody thought when the season started,
05:25they would be here. No, that was the whole purpose of everybody. Not everybody. A lot
05:29of people say, you know, you keep Scooble, just make a run at it. And you know, you saw
05:33what he did with Valdez. So maybe you'll do something at the, you know, the deadline. I
05:38just, I wonder, you didn't think the bats were going to be quite as bad as they are.
05:42No, look, they weren't good enough when healthy. And then the injuries have only made it
05:46worse. It is the worst offense in baseball in the month of May. An entire month, by the
05:50way, we're wrapping up the month this week. Yeah. It's the worst offense in the month
05:54of May. We're at the third quarter or the third pole, if you want to call it. The one
05:59third pole. Yeah. It's their one third of the season has officially just ended. So I
06:03don't feel like it's quote early anymore. We're past the Sparky 40 game mark or a third
06:07of the way through the season. This team's a dozen games below 500. Stoney, that's the
06:12difference. In 2024, where they made their miraculous comeback, at no point that year
06:16were they this far below 500. True.
06:21Now they got more time, but time's only as good as the baseball team is. If they don't
06:24play well, it's done. So you say like teetering, maybe they're teetering. Yeah. Like we're not
06:30into June yet. I kept saying like seven to 10 days. Well, they lost two or three to Baltimore.
06:34They lose two or three to the Angels. They lose two to three to the Angels. It's
06:38over. Yeah. You know, so weird. I was looking when the schedule came out and you
06:42don't look at it like football, but when the season started, you looked a little
06:45bit, you know, who you want to go see and things like that. And I said, well, you
06:49know, the Tigers are right. They didn't add a bat quality enough, obviously at all
06:55at all. And I don't know if he would be willing to do it, but if the Tigers at the
07:00deadline were in this thing, I mean, and the Angels are the Angels, what could
07:04you, you know, would you, what would you give up for Mike Trout if he played
07:09well? And he is, he's cooled down a little bit, but he's, you know, he's still
07:13playing, he's still a quality player. So we could get young McGonagall and old
07:16McGonagall on the same team. Yes, absolutely. They're both from roughly the same
07:21area. I know that's your neck of the woods. So that's not the same street
07:24corner. No, one's from the Jersey side, one's from where I grew up or close to
07:28where I grew up, but yeah. And now there's no way, I mean, you're looking
07:33at saying, well, you go down to the ballpark because it's always fun at the
07:36ballpark and you, you might see Mike Trout for the last time. Back it up
07:39because you're talking about if only that we were in a position where we
07:43could buy. Yes. That's a way of kind of reverse engineering where the Tigers
07:46are at. Yeah. Is there a world, do you think this team is buying at the trade
07:50deadline? That seems so foreign to suggest. So if they're not going to be
07:54adding, they're not chasing a world series. Scooble's going to leave.
07:58Like you, while you might not be ready to say season's over, I'm writing
08:02them off. You kind of know all these things to be true. If you're not adding,
08:06you're not in contention and then you might as well be selling at that. So,
08:09okay. So we're a third when they get to the two thirds, Mark, we're still
08:14before the deadline, right? I would think. Sounds, sounds right. So if they're
08:18within, I don't know, a game, two games of the wild card, you have to at least
08:23buying. I don't know if you're buying, but then you're selling, you're
08:26thinking about it. You have to figure, have these discussions, figure out the
08:29real, realistically, what can we do? Greg is wincing, shaking his head.
08:34What's going on? You're doing one or the other. Yeah. I don't think you're
08:38standing pat. Oh no, I don't think you're standing pat either, but the
08:41discussions have to be made. Are we in this thing or are we not in this thing?
08:44And, you know, one and a half, two games out of the wild card come the end of
08:49July. What do you say? I'd say they, you're probably still selling, right? I'm
08:53still selling. So even in this world where they've clawed and scratched their
08:56way back, we're still talking about selling because they're not in good
09:00conscience, a world series team, right? So at that point, you can't, you can't
09:04risk having Scooble walk while you don't contend for the world series, but
09:08which is, is the painful realization we find ourselves dealing with now today,
09:12post Memorial day. I do think though, what Stoney's doing is the
09:17equivalent of it's like back to the future too. This is what 2015 is going
09:22to look like. Well, that's what 2015 was going to look like to someone in
09:241985. Like you are having the emotions of today and just putting on, they're
09:32going to be a game back. So you still have the emotions of they're not a good
09:36baseball team, right? Well, what it's going to take to get to a position where
09:40they are contending a game back of the wild card, they will have improved and be
09:45playing better. And these bats are going to wake up a little bit.
09:47And they'll get some injuries, you know, and your players back and maybe
09:50they'll do the right thing and send Zach short to Timbuktu and we can get
09:54Max Anderson up here maybe. Well, you can't do that, Stoney. Come on now. You saw
09:57AJ's quote from Friday. This is from Evan Petzl for people who had lost in the
10:01wash of a long holiday weekend. AJ said, it's not as simple as just try
10:05something. There are roster ramifications. There are playing time
10:08ramifications. Yeah. Okay. So there's also win loss ramifications. There's also, you
10:15got to see how some of these guys can look at the major league level when there's
10:18still something to play for, not just September crap. Yeah. I don't understand
10:21when the organization has already DFA'd Zach McKinstry once this month. What
10:25ramifications are there? If he were to disappear tomorrow and Max Anderson was
10:30added to the 40 man, which is what you could do. Right. You'd still have
10:34McGonagall to play shortstop. And then if you're curious about playing time off
10:37date, first of all, they've said they're not resting McGonagall right now. Right.
10:40But if you needed to, Zach McKinstry played shortstop. Well, Javi will be back
10:45eventually too. So he can play shortstop. Max Anderson, I just want to see him
10:49play. I think it's time. You know, he only had 69 at bats at AAA this season, but
10:55he's, you know, his OPS is what? 787. He's hitting 319. I mean, come on. He's a
11:01second baseman. Even if you can switch him with how you leave for crying out
11:06loud. It's the ABs this season and the minors for him is why he's not. Yeah, I
11:11know. Doesn't that feel rigid? Yes, it does. That's their philosophy. I'm not
11:15saying that's the right thing to do. I've called for it since mid last week. They
11:19have the player on the 40 man that they can dispose of, wipe their hands with
11:25Zach short and call it a day. If you have a problem down the road because
11:29Anderson doesn't work out, there's 5000 Zach shorts out there. Right. In fact, I
11:34will put you out there, Costa. You're still young and athletic enough. I
11:37would. A little lateral quick. Seriously, I know. I'm joking, but it's just, I don't
11:41buy it. It's their philosophy. I understand the Max Clark philosophy of
11:45not bringing him up till late in the year and not bringing him up at all this
11:48year. I really do understand about him being younger. He's 20 or 21, right?
11:53Anderson's 24. Right. There's a maturity level here to this a little bit. I
11:57understand why they don't bring up Clark. I can't understand Anderson. Me
12:00neither. I mean, obviously the injury hurt him a little bit, but still, it's
12:04ridiculous. I don't, I don't get it. He's, he's, he can hit the one thing they
12:10don't have throughout the lineup is guys that can actually see the ball, hit the
12:15ball. And like we say, every day, you don't make these moves every day. You
12:20lose every day. You drift further and further away. You cement yourself as
12:23sellers because you can't in good conscience. Imagine this team as a buyer to
12:27bring Greg's analogy full circle. We dream of a future with flying cars. Well, then you
12:32get to the year and you go, Oh, we don't have flying cars. So like you dream
12:35of a world where this team's in contention. No, it's hard to see right
12:39now. Two, four, eight, five, three, nine, 97, 97. Talk of tigers to start the
12:43show. We've got some Pistons talk at six 35, the conference finals. Are they
12:48making you feel better or are they making you feel worse? It's 97 one.
12:52One.
