Transcript
00:05we'll explain why stony was pulling up his college transcript off air we'll do that at 8 35
00:11how do you still have that i was cleaning out some i keep a lot of stuff right you know
00:17ticket
00:17stubs and cards and all this stuff and i had my college transcript in this shoe box so i
00:23took some pictures i took a pictures of it and sent it to my friends and they left what year
00:28was
00:28it what 1976 or 1980 also what year in college like was this like your that's the whole thing
00:36it's a whole thing four years yeah and uh including my semester at temple my semester at ucla the reason
00:44we're going to summer school the reason we're going to talk about it ties into something going
00:47on in sports today so we'll do that coming up at 8 35 we've asked people football mode or baseball
00:52mode i'm ready for some kneecap soup signed balake
00:59uh it's certainly not baseball mode release jansen get us back ken of my ada
01:07bb that was a good signing too boy it's amazing he's so good at getting young players and drafting
01:13and developing but man oh man the free agent signings have just been abysmal well you're
01:19get the bargain bin i know you don't want term right you know that's what the one a lot of
01:25these free agent signs have been they're band-aids well my ada was two or two to three years right
01:30yeah well they've had i think the tiger situation they had to throw on an extra year a few times
01:35they did it with flary right and again i think the optimistic way of looking at it would be if
01:40they
01:40develop pitching the way they did hitting they will have a surplus and you'll end up kicking
01:44failed starters to the bullpen that long term it could work out but i gotta tell you band-aid's a
01:50good word for it last year at the deadline this off season bullpens are volatile by nature yes
01:55nobody's bullpens worse than the tigers correct they were never i've said at the gym a thousand
01:59times since we worked together they were never going to jeopardize 2027 and beyond no that was that
02:05to me that almost is that's like in scott harris's office don't jeopardize 2027 and when you get that
02:12temptation to make this move or that move to make maybe that bigger signing i get it for your top
02:17few you know maybe five guys but after that especially since they have so much uh similarity
02:25positions yeah i remember that was what we talked about at the deadline two years ago was no one
02:30suggested trading clarker mcgonigal no and and i don't even think we wanted to trade melton the point
02:35was maybe they didn't want to trade melton and they should credit for holding on him but i don't believe
02:40that was our our push you got to trade melton it was hey if you have loranza and you had
02:46uh
02:46well percent you were both right of catcher types could you pick one or more so it was hey
02:51the guy everybody wanted was suarez and teams were giving up their like seventh and eighth best
02:55prospect could you give up those kind of guys whatever we don't need to revisit suarez but
03:01they they do have to look at this bullpen and when i say they're the worst in baseball it's not
03:05by era
03:06but you've you've laid it out the blown saves the leads in the seventh or later their bullpen
03:11is terrible they've converted 48 of their save opportunities they've blown the majority of them
03:17yeah yeah that's a problem uh baseball mode football mode 248 539 97 97 text says i'm ready for my
03:23lord
03:23and savior dan campbell to rescue us okay uh and another says everybody was clamoring for these young
03:30players enjoy the ride with the ups and the downs relax this is what you wished for
03:34well that's true but it's still if you want your team to win there's still games that
03:38the young players aren't screwing up no they're really not they're not the young players are fun
03:45to watch the future of this team is great well that's so greg called out john the other day because
03:50john says this is a fun team but then like a day later he'll say this is a frustrating team
03:54and
03:55they're both they're both fun and frustrating careful uh and this text says my heart is always in
04:03hockey mode unfortunately not looking forward to this season so football mode well the owner of
04:08the red wings isn't in hockey mode because he won't even interview a general manager candidate we've got
04:12an update on that we'll do it later in the hour whenever we finish your transcript discussion
04:17someone wants to know if it's written on parchment paper no it's written on regular paper get to it
04:22but first heather with the news handwritten no
04:29in cursive hard to read fading it is typed it isn't okay anyway uh detroit public schools is getting
04:36ready to go phone free in the classroom the district has announced its new cell phone policy
04:41for students with the changes taking effect when the school starts on august 24th so the district says
04:47under the new state policy students are expected not to use cell phones from the entry bell all the
04:53way through the dismissal bell so all day in school the goal obviously is to create a more distraction
05:00free school environment and the new rule comes after michigan lawmakers passed legislation requiring
05:06public schools across the state to adopt policies restricting cell phone use during the school day
05:12so it's kind of up to the school i've seen different different uh policies to decide how this is
05:17going to work um whether they're going to like keep their phones in their lockers whether there's going
05:23to be like a locked bag whether they're going to get access to their phone during breaks or lunch or
05:29things each school can kind of decide what would you recommend if they put you in charge i would say
05:35um they can have their phones while they're walking to and from class they can have it during their
05:39downtime during lunch but then when you enter a classroom there should be a place that you put your phone
05:44whether it's a charging dock which would be fine or somewhere where they don't have it sitting with
05:49them at their desk in their hands i think that during classroom time you should be focused on
05:53the instruction from the teacher in some of the schools where i've been a substitute teacher
05:59they have some of them have like a setup where they have like slots where you just put your phone
06:05yeah that would be great i think that's fine and then then they're there in case of an emergency
06:09because i know that's what some parents are worried about that if they need to contact their kids or
06:13heaven forbid there's an emergency at the school they'd be there in the classroom with the kids
06:18they'd still have them if they need them but they're not focused on that during instruction time i think
06:24about like if there is a reason that you want to be able to contact your kid or if your
06:27kid needs to
06:28contact you that it's in the room just not the temptation to be scrolling or looking at stuff or texting
06:32exactly uh police in dearborn heights and melvindale are investigating and reviewing evidence after
06:38flyers advertising for the kkk were found scattered around both cities tuesday evening dearborn heights
06:45police say that somebody called after seeing these flyers being thrown from a vehicle residents say they
06:51found business cards as well containing kkk contact information um also thrown around that area so they
06:58were found in people's front yards like in playgrounds even um in the streets uh here's one resident
07:04janice townsend discuss discussing uh what's been going on
07:11so
07:35yeah it's disgusting uh hey you can catch uh shaquille o'neal shack aka dj diesel in detroit he's
07:43coming he's coming to the uh container globe in detroit on october 10th uh bringing a show with
07:49them so if you're a fan i've never heard his i've never heard his uh his music is have you
07:57ever been
07:57the container globe no i never actually heard of it i did i did google it because i didn't know
08:02what
08:02it was um never even heard of that but either way tickets are on sale 54 for general admission 102
08:08for
08:09vip uh sounds like it would be a good time dj diesel dj diesel shack just makes everybody smile he
08:17does
08:17great things for people you know you you see the video some of it's stuff on his own some of
08:22it's
08:22corporate but a lot of it's on his own where he goes in he's shopping he just randomly buys things
08:27for
08:27people oh yeah you hear about that all the time seems like a good dude we were talking about phones
08:31in the classroom well listen to this this is a little depressing news for anyone who actually
08:35remembers uh when hanging out with people meant actually being in the same room with them
08:39there's new analysis of u.s census data that finds that about 10 of gen z adults
08:45report having zero face-to-face interaction with other people on a regular typical day
08:51so this is so before the pandemic that number was just three percent among young people who were
08:57having zero contact with others um by late 2021 it climbed to about nine percent peaked at 10 percent
09:04in 2023 so it's come down a little since then but it's still above pre-pandemic levels um
09:13and it's not just gen z the average amount of time americans spend socializing with each other
09:18has dropped from about 45 minutes to 35 minutes over the past 20 years and young people are seeing
09:24the biggest decline in that is that online classes work from home because you're not getting any like
09:30we see each other we're in person but if you don't even have this is a work environment to go
09:36to you
09:36it would be easy to just if you're home it's one screen to the next yeah they say those um
09:41age 15 to 24
09:43now spend about 35 minutes a day hanging out with other people compared to about an hour
09:47previously okay sad it is sad and a lot of people don't know how to communicate that's a huge issue
09:54which is tough too yeah i noticed i mean i noticed that even among young people in retail or working
10:01at restaurants and just like interesting they don't get a lot of younger people don't use the phone to
10:10talk it's all texting so then you call and they're just like uh yeah they don't answer hello or they
10:19use it to voice message one another oh oh you know what i've never like where you actually listen to
10:25the voice or voice yes yeah you know what i haven't gotten into that but i have received a couple
10:30i'm
10:30like what is this i don't like just call me what is this i'm listening to your message when you
10:34could
10:34have just we could be having a conversation exactly but that would just use the voice to text and text
10:39it to me i would be i'd be annoyed if someone was sending me voice messages i've only received one
10:44in my whole life well at least with voice messages you can't they can't screw up the spelling well
10:51voice to text yeah anyway that's heather with the news coming up next why are we looking at tone
10:56stoney's transcripts and it deals with something going on with a college athlete today it's 97 one
11:01one
