00:00This is Elephant Odyssey at the San Diego Zoo.
00:04We have seven awesome elephants here.
00:10One male elephant named Ron Jafor, who just celebrated his 50th birthday.
00:18And six female elephants, both African elephants and Asian elephants.
00:25Mila is the newest member of our elephant herd. She's an African elephant.
00:30You can tell because her ears form the shape of the continent of Africa.
00:35This is Mary, an Asian elephant.
00:38She's also the matriarch or leader of the elephant herd here at the zoo.
00:43This means she's in charge and the other elephants look to her for her calm and wise guidance.
00:51When Mila met Mary for the first time, they were introduced through a safety wall.
00:56Mila was a bit unsure and put her ears out at Mary.
00:59But Mary stayed cool as a giant cucumber, reassuring Mila that there was nothing to be scared of.
01:09The next time they met was through an open fence line.
01:12Mila and Mary hit it off.
01:15First, being curious by smelling each other.
01:19And then showing affection by hugging trunks.
01:22Did you know that elephants are very tactile and have a great sense of smell?
01:27They use their trunks for many things.
01:30From bathing, to gathering, eating and hugging.
01:37Mary and Mila hang out together all the time.
01:40They sometimes share the same hay feeder, which is a great sign that they are pals.
01:47Mila is a smart girl.
01:49And as the newbie, she watches and learns from what the other elephants in the herd are doing.
01:55Female elephants form strong bonds with one another.
01:58They each have unique personalities and relationships.
02:02Sometimes, they have little disagreements.
02:06But mostly, they just hang out together.
