00:00The Book of Jonah, the Authorized, 1611, King James Version, read by Justin Bible.
00:08May God bless you with an unquenchable thirst for his holy word, the Bible.
00:16Jonah, Chapter 1.
00:18Now the word of the Lord came unto Jonah, the son of Amittai, saying, Arise, go to Nineveh,
00:25that great city, and cry against it, for their wickedness is come up before me.
00:31But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the Lord, and went down to
00:36Joppa, and he found a ship going to Tarshish, so he paid the fare thereof and went down
00:41into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of the Lord.
00:45But the Lord sent out a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty tempest in the
00:50sea, so that the ship was like to be broken.
00:52Then the mariners were afraid, and cried every man unto his God, and cast forth the wares
00:58that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it of them.
01:01But Jonah was gone down into the sides of the ship, and he lay and was fast asleep.
01:07So the shipmaster came to him, and said unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper?
01:13Arise, call upon thy God, if so be that God will think upon us, that we perish not.
01:18And they said every one to his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for
01:24whose cause this evil is upon us.
01:27So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah.
01:30Then said they unto him, Tell us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evil is upon us?
01:35What is thine occupation?
01:37And whence comest thou?
01:39What is thy country?
01:40And of what people art thou?
01:43And he said unto them, I am in Hebrew, and I fear the Lord, the God of heaven, which hath
01:48made the sea, and the dry land.
01:51Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said unto him, Why hast thou done this?
01:57For the men knew that he fled from the presence of the Lord, because he had told them.
02:01Then said they unto him, What shall we do unto thee, that the sea may be calm unto us?
02:06For the sea wrought, and was tempestuous.
02:09And he said unto them, Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea, so shall the sea be
02:15calm unto you, for I know that for my sake this great tempest is upon you.
02:21Nevertheless the men rode hard to bring it to the land, but they could not, for the sea
02:25wrought, and was tempestuous against them.
02:28Wherefore they cried unto the Lord, and said, We beseech thee, O Lord, we beseech thee, let
02:33us not perish for this man's life, and lay not upon us innocent blood.
02:39For thou, O Lord, hast done as it pleased thee.
02:42So they took up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea, and the sea ceased from her raging.
02:49Then the men feared the Lord exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice unto the Lord, and made
02:54vows.
02:55Now the Lord had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah.
02:59Jonah, and Jonah was in the belly of the fish, three days and three nights.
03:13Jonah, chapter 2
03:15Then Jonah prayed unto the Lord his God, out of the fish's belly, and said, I cried by reason
03:22of mine affliction unto the Lord, and he heard me.
03:25Out of the belly of hell, cried I, and thou heardest my voice.
03:30For thou hast cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas, and the floods compassed
03:36me about.
03:37All thy billows and thy waves passed over me.
03:40Then I said, I am cast out of thy sight.
03:44Yet I will look again toward thy holy temple.
03:47The waters compassed me about, even to the soul.
03:51The depth closed me round about.
03:54The weeds were wrapped about my head.
03:56I went down to the bottoms of the mountains.
04:00The earth with her bars was about me forever.
04:03Yet hast thou brought up my life from corruption.
04:07O Lord my God!
04:10When my soul fainted within me, I remembered the Lord, and my prayer came in unto thee, into
04:18thine holy temple.
04:19They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy.
04:24But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving.
04:29I will pay that, that I have vowed.
04:33Salvation is of the Lord.
04:37And the Lord spake unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land.
04:51Jonah, chapter 3.
04:53And the word of the Lord came unto Jonah the second time, saying, Arise, go unto Nineveh,
05:00that great city, and preach unto it the preaching that I bid thee.
05:05So Jonah arose, and went unto Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord.
05:10Now Nineveh was an exceeding great city of three days' journey.
05:14And Jonah began to enter into the city a day's journey.
05:18And he cried, and said, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.
05:24So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth from
05:30the greatest of them, even to the least of them.
05:34For word came unto the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and he laid his robe
05:40from him, and covered him with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.
05:44And he caused it to be proclaimed and published to Nineveh by the decree of the king and his
05:49nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste anything.
05:57Let them not feed nor drink water, but let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and
06:05cry mightily unto God.
06:07Yea, let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their
06:14hands.
06:15Who can tell if God will turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger, that we
06:21perish not?
06:23And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way.
06:28And God repented of the evil that he had said that he would do unto them, and he did it
06:34not.
06:43Jonah Chapter 4 But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and
06:48he was very angry, and he prayed unto the Lord, and said, I pray thee, O Lord, was not
06:54this my saying, when I was yet in my country?
06:56Therefore I fled before unto Tarshish, for I knew that thou art a gracious God, and merciful,
07:04slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repentest thee of the evil.
07:10Therefore now, O Lord, take, I beseech thee my life from me, for it is better for me to
07:15die than to live.
07:17Then said the Lord, Doest thou well to be angry?
07:22So Jonah went out of the city, and sat on the east side of the city, and there made him
07:29a booth, and sat under it in the shadow, till he might see what would become of the city.
07:34And the Lord God prepared a gourd, and made it to come up over Jonah, that it might be
07:40a shadow over his head, to deliver him from his grief.
07:44So Jonah was exceeding glad of the gourd.
07:47But God prepared a worm when the morning rose the next day, and it smote the gourd, that
07:53it withered.
07:54And it came to pass, when the sun did arise, that God prepared a vehement east wind.
08:00And the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, that he fainted, and wished in himself to die, and
08:06said, It is better for me to die than to live.
08:10And God said to Jonah, Doest thou well to be angry for the gourd?
08:16And he said, I do well to be angry, even unto death.
08:21Then said the Lord, Thou hast had pity on the gourd, for the which thou hast not labored,
08:28neither madest it grow, which came up in a night, and perished in a night.
08:33And should not I spare Nineveh, that great city, wherein are more than six score thousand
08:39persons, that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand, and also much
08:46cattle?
