00:14actions against the leader of the revolution, Claude Castro.
00:21In Chile, members of the Association of Families of Political Executions and Detainees who have
00:26disappeared held a protest to denounce the persistence of the historical debt in the area
00:31of human rights.
00:37And over 10 people have been killed by Israeli forces in southern Lebanon, including several
00:42paramedics in targeted attacks.
00:51Hello, welcome to From the South.
00:52I'm Luis Alberto Matos from Derezo Studios in Caracas, Venezuela.
00:56We begin with the news.
01:11Cuba reaffirms its commitment to defending the homeland and condemns the United States' actions
01:16against the leader of the revolution, Raul Castro, from an anti-imperialist standpoint.
01:21Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel led a mass rally in Havana on Friday to protest U.S.
01:26aggression.
01:27Thousands of Cubans joined the rally at the José Martí Anti-Imperialist Tribune, where
01:32they displayed banners and held events honoring the memory and legacy of Raul Castro, as well
01:38as demonstrating the people's unity in defending their sovereignty.
01:41During the event, protesters also denounced the economic, financial, and commercial blockade
01:47imposed by Washington against the Caribbean island.
01:58And as part of the mobilization that took place in the early hours in Havana, hero of
02:02the Republic, Gerardo Hernández communicated a message from Army General Raul Castro.
02:15People of Cuba, friends around the world.
02:29I have the honor and privilege of delivering a message that has just reached us from Comrade
02:34the Army General.
02:36He tells us that he's deeply grateful for the solidarity of our people and our friends around
02:41the world.
02:47And he has told us that as long as he lives, he will continue to lead our people, defending
02:52the revolution with unwavering determination.
03:02And the Young Communist League, mass organizations and students and youth movements also gather
03:08at the historic José Martí Anti-Imperialist Tribune to condemn the actions by the U.S.
03:13Department of Justice against Army General Raul Castro.
03:15Likewise, the event marks the celebrations of Raul Castro's 95th birthday, with participants
03:20reaffirming their determination to defend the revolution against threats, the blockade,
03:25and unfounded accusations.
03:35And as we reported, in the Havana youth called for a demonstration in the early hours to defend
03:40the revolution.
03:41Leader Raul Castro ran the revolutionary process in the face of recent U.S. escalation.
03:45With more on this, our correspondent, Belén de los Santos.
03:50Hello, the studios.
03:51How are you?
03:51I come to you from Havana, Cuba, particularly from the anti-imperialist tribune.
03:57Here, a demonstration took place just hours ago, a demonstration that was summoned by the
04:02young generations of Cuba.
04:04The youth organizations that have come out here in defense of the revolutionary process,
04:10but particularly in defense of revolutionary leader Raul Castro, who was the target of a
04:17latest series of accusations by the United States that is in the latest series of aggressions
04:23that have been mounting for the past month from the United States against Cuba.
04:27Let's recall the imposing of a total oil blockade in January that has deeply affected the livelihood
04:36of everyday life here in Cuba.
04:39Also increased sanctions.
04:40Of course, all of this on top of the over six decade long blockade against the island.
04:46And the latest of that series of attacks were the accusations that the Department of Justice
04:53of the United States presented against revolutionary leader Raul Castro Ruz over an incident in 1996
04:59that Cuba has maintained for decades now that it was an act of sovereignty, that these accusations
05:04have absolutely no legal grounds, no legitimacy, and that they are just another of a series of provocations
05:11that are targeting the island, trying to threaten the entire population with the possibility of an imminent attack.
05:19Also we've seen an aircraft carrier that the U.S. moved into the Caribbean area in the past hours.
05:25All of this a series of provocations that Cuba has continued to resist.
05:31And this demonstration was called precisely in defense of Cuba.
05:36In their right to peace, their right to defend their land, their sovereignty,
05:42and they not being able to be next in the list of countries that the U.S. have been targeting
05:49lately.
05:50They do not want to be attacked, as was Venezuela, as was Iran.
05:54And they are willing to defend their process, defend their land, and continue to say that Cuba is ready to
06:01defend itself,
06:01but is a nation of peace.
06:03That was the heart of the demonstration that happened here in Havana that we're seeing in the Anti-Imperialist Tribune.
06:11Again, just meters away from the U.S. Embassy, so a symbolic place to deliver this message.
06:17That is what is happening here in Havana.
06:20We will continue reporting off course.
06:22For now, I go back to you.
06:28Let's now take our first break.
06:30Stay with us.
06:44Welcome back.
06:45In Chile, members of the Association of Families of Political Executions and Detainees, who have disappeared,
06:51held a protest to denounce the persistence of the historical debt in the area of human rights.
06:56With photos of the victims held high on chanting the slogan,
07:00the memory cannot be erased, the protest demanded the opening of military archives' effective sentences
07:06for those responsible for crimes against humanity and the location of the bodies that remain missing.
07:11Spokespersons for the organization identified the Navy as a key player in the state repression carried out between 1973 and
07:181990.
07:19Furthermore, the petition linked the past to the present by denouncing acts of contemporary institutional violence linked to the Mapuche
07:27territorial conflict,
07:28the criminalization of environmental activists, and the abuses committed during recent social protests.
07:52And on Thursday, Venezuela's acting president, Rodriguez, led the great national economic and productive pilgrimage,
08:00starting from Guayana City in Bolivar State.
08:03The acting president, accompanied by the alternatives of Venezuela's major productives, industrial workers, and social movements in Venezuela,
08:12demands through this pilgrimage the total lifting of the unilateral coercive measures imposed by the United States against Venezuela.
08:19The choice of Bolivar State for this new phase is symbolic as it is the home to the country's major
08:25basic companies and heavy industries,
08:27a fundamental pillar for development and economic independence.
08:32In this sense, the goal is to consolidate a united front that defends sovereignty and the right to development of
08:37the Venezuelan people.
08:45We are here to listen to each other, despite our differences and disagreements,
08:51and to consign hatred, intolerance, and extremism towards those who think differently or are different to the past forever.
09:02We must never again see a Venezuelan burn because of their skin color or political beliefs.
09:10We must listen to one another here because extremism has caused great harm in Venezuela.
09:17The halted intolerance of those who have called for invasion, economic blockades, and further sanctions have caused immense damage.
09:26As the people tell me, haven't we all suffered from the call of perverse extremism to harm Venezuela?
09:33Perverso! A dañar a Venezuela!
09:36And the acting president of Venezuela, Nelson Rodríguez, promoted productive projects in the state of Bolivar
09:42that aimed to counter sanctions and reiterated the call for an end to the economic blockade.
09:47During her visit to the Guerreros del Comandante Chávez commune, the acting president emphasized that the second phase of the
09:54national pilgrimage
09:55is a space for national unity, for a Venezuela in peace and free of sanctions.
09:59In addition, Nelson Rodríguez urged the communes to export their products and become extraordinary ambassadors of Venezuela to the world.
10:07It is worth noting that the acting president also stressed that national production has grown despite the imperialist siege.
10:22The Colombian Minister of the Interior, Armando Benedetti, announced the establishment of a dialogue table between the indigenous communities
10:30in dispute over territories in Cauca.
10:33Benedetti warned that there is an insurgent armed group behind this conflict, possibly with political interests, just days before the
10:40presidential election.
10:41The irregular situation has so far left a total of three dead and 44 injured.
10:45The territorial crisis in Cauca evidenced the persistence of the armed conflict in Colombia,
10:51where indigenous peoples are victims of violence by illegal groups seeking to control strategic regions.
10:58Meanwhile, the communities are demanding security, guarantees and respect for their ancestral territories.
11:12And ten days before the presidential elections in Colombia, polls revealed that the candidate for the historic back party, Ivan
11:18Cepeda,
11:19leads voting in tension with more than ten points ahead of the candidate for the defenders of the homeland movement,
11:25Abelardo de la Espriela.
11:27According to the polls, the representative of the first round with more than 44% of the polls, which represents
11:36an increase compared to the previous poll from April.
11:39It is followed by the right wing candidate for the defenders of the homeland movement, Abelardo de la Espriela, who
11:46holds 31%.
11:48In third place is the representative of the Democratic Center, the Urubista Paloma Valencia, with 14%, which represents a drop
11:55of nearly six points compared to the previous measurement.
11:57It is worth noting that the survey also indicated that the other candidates did not exceed 2% of their
12:02preferences.
12:09The practice of journalism in Honduras is rapidly becoming dangerous, and the atmosphere is beginning to resemble that of Juan
12:16Orlando Hernández's government,
12:18when social and human rights organizations accused him of establishing a dictatorship.
12:24Gerardo Torres Salaya reports from Honduras.
12:28Some journalists asked President Nasri Esfura for money because of how expensive everything is in the country.
12:34I speak for the entire press. If you could encourage us to continue supporting you as we've already done, gas
12:40is expensive, you see.
12:42Have no doubt about it. That's how it's going to be.
12:46Others suffer violence when trying to do their job, as was the case of Eddie Quintero, who was violently attacked
12:53by the presidential honor guard
12:54while trying to do his job during a presidential event.
13:09What happened to our colleague, Eddie, is also a proof of this.
13:14We've seen an unattractable honor guard that does not allow the press to move about and do its job freely.
13:22As happened in the previously government, which we lived, a very different reality.
13:29And we deeply regret that happened to our colleague, to whom we express our solidarity from this space.
13:38Ricardo Elner is the director of a newspaper in Honduras and explains how the dangerous situation for the press has
13:46always existed in the country
13:47and tends to worsen when the national party governs.
13:53In a country where speaking out these dangerous practicing journalism is an act of resistance.
13:58In the last 20 years in Honduras, more than 100 journalists and media workers have been murdered,
14:07with a reported 95% impunity rate, particularly during the period of the narco dictatorship under the national party.
14:19What is happening today is not coincidence. The national party is once again in government.
14:26And we see how the violence they perpetrate from within state institutions and generating fear among media workers and journalists.
14:38In recent weeks, new laws have been introduced in the national congress to control social media,
14:44declare anyone who opposes the government as a terrorist and increase penalties for defamation.
14:50It appears that the groundwork is being laid for a policy of greater social control.
14:58Freedom of expression and the practice of journalism have always been dangerous in two ways.
15:05One is that in this kind of dictatorial governments with social control,
15:12there is generally one press with a narrative favorable to the regime and another press that questions it.
15:22And that's where great danger lies. In political crisis, the press always suffers from both sides.
15:29On the one hand, control, but on the other, a disguised control through advertising or purchases.
15:36And we have lived through these experiences for many years.
15:40This committee has been around for 44 years, and we have the names of disappeared journalists on our walls.
15:47Human rights organizations in Honduras are concerned on how very quickly freedom of press and freedom of speech
15:54is being deteriorated in the very first months of this new government
15:58that is quickly reproducing the same behavior that we saw during Juan Orlando Hernández's narco dictatorship.
16:05For Telesurian English from Tegucigalpa, Honduras, Gerardo Torres Zelaya.
16:10Let's now take our final break. Don't go away.
16:42Welcome back. Over 10 people have been killed in the past few hours
16:46by Israeli forces in southern Lebanon, including several paramedics in targeted attacks.
16:51According to the Lebanese National News Agency, a total of six people, including two paramedics and a child,
16:57were killed by an Israeli attack in their kingdom, Ardnach, while six were also wounded, including three paramedics.
17:03Moreover, an overnight airstrike targeting an Islamic Health Authority center in the Tirith district
17:08killed four people and wounded two paramedics in yet another sirenist aggression against healthcare facilities.
17:15At the same time, another paramedic was killed and four were injured in an attacking Tirith district
17:20when Israeli forces targeted the rescue workers that were trying to aid a victim of a previous strike.
17:33In Lebanon, Hezbollah issued on Thursday a statement which affirms that the sanctions issued by the U.S. Departments of
17:39State and Treasury
17:40against Lebanese members of the parliament elected by the people, officers in the Lebanese army,
17:45and general security and officials in Hezbollah and the Amal Movement constitute an attempt to intimidate the free Lebanese people
17:53in order to reinforce a sirenist aggression against the country.
17:58In this regard, the Hezbollah leadership stated,
18:00These sanctions are a source of pride for those against whom they are directed and further confirmation that our decision
18:07was the right one.
18:08Their effects will have no practical impact on our decisions or on the ongoing work of our brothers and officials
18:15in the service of your people and in the defense of your interests and sovereignty.
18:20It continues, as for the decision to sanction Lebanese officials on the eve of the meetings at the Pentagon,
18:26this is a blatant attempt to intimidate our official security institutions and subject the State to the conditions of U
18:32.S. Germany.
18:33To conclude, the statement added,
18:35The Lebanese authorities must defend their constitutional security and military institutions
18:40to preserve the national sovereignty and dignity of Lebanon and the Lebanese people.
18:53And from Turkey, the evacuation of hundreds of activists from the Gaza-bound humanitarian fortela to their home countries
18:59is underway after they were kidnapped by Israel in international waters.
19:04422 activists have been evacuated from Israel on charter flights, arriving at the Istanbul airport
19:09throughout Thursday to be returned to their home countries.
19:13Turkish authorities are managing their evacuation with some Spanish activists already arriving in Madrid
19:18early evening on Thursday.
19:19Several participants denounced abuses and human rights violations by Israeli forces
19:23with a video published by National Security Minister Itamar Benvir, sparking global outrage.
19:29In this sense, these deportations were the fastest Israel has ever carried out
19:33as it scrambles to contain the public relations damage caused by Benvir's video.
19:45And Italy's Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani formally requested that the European Union impose sanctions
19:50on Israel's Minister of National Security Itamar Benvir.
19:53The request comes after the Israeli Minister released a video showing the mistreatment of detained activists
19:58on the global summit fortela, which was illegally intercepted by the Southeast forces in international waters
20:03while transporting humanitarian aid to Gaza.
20:06In this scenario, Ireland and Spain have joined the call for the European Union to condemn these actions.
20:11If approved by the international organization, the Italian initiative would mark a milestone in diplomatic pressure
20:17against the Southeast regime for its crimes.
20:28And in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the suspected death toll from the latest Ebola virus outbreak
20:34has risen to 160 with number of suspected cases reached in 670.
20:39According to the Central African Nations Ministry of Communications and Media,
20:43the health zones of Mangualu, Rampara, Bunia, and Yankunde in the Etude province
20:48are among the worst affected, with cases also suspected in the North Kibu province.
20:53Uganda has also confirmed two cases in Kampala, including one death from two people who traveled from the DRC.
21:00Health authorities say the outbreak is being fueled by the Bundibukio strain,
21:04a type of Ebola virus for which no vaccine or treatment exists.
21:08Given the seriousness of the situation, the World Health Organization declared a public health emergency
21:13due to the extreme risk of regional spread.
21:22An violence erupted in the Etude province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo,
21:27and tensions arose over the handling of victims of the latest Ebola outbreak.
21:31Protegers in the town of Rampara wanted to recover the bodies of relatives who had died of Ebola in order
21:36to bury them.
21:37When this was the night, they set fire to the hospital, according to local reports.
21:41Efforts to contain the latest outbreak of the deadly hemorrhagic disease have been hindered by the DRC's ongoing conflicts,
21:48including those between the Congolese army and the M23 rebel group.
21:57If the government doesn't take appropriate measures in response to this situation,
22:03this case will multiply and people will be frightened because it's not easy to behave like this.
22:08It won't be good.
22:10It won't be good.
22:11We ask the government to take all necessary steps.
22:13First and foremost, to ensure security and to understand that this is a truly deadly disease, a serious one.
22:22People are dying, and all measures must be taken to find a solution to this illness.
22:32And in Greenland, on Thursday, hundreds rallied through the streets of the capital, Nook,
22:37as the United States officially opened a larger diplomatic consulate on the island.
22:42Protegers waved Greenland's flags and carried signs while chanting slogans.
22:45The upgraded U.S. council, relocated from a small facility on Nook's outskirts to a large downtown office,
22:51has become a symbol of Washington's increasing focus on the island's geopolitical importance.
22:56Greenland Prime Minister James Frederick Nielsen and several senior government officials declined invitations
23:00to attend the opening ceremony.
23:02As tensions with the U.S. continue, the protest highlights growing local opposition to President Donald Trump's
23:08renewed interest in expanding his government's influence over the island.
23:18Like this, we have come to the end of this news review.
23:19You can find more on our website at telestoreenglish.net and also on our social media.
