Chris Miller joins the show to preview the Wizards draft and discuss the NBA playoffs.
Transcript
00:00We are going to the phones, the rude guest hotline, to the coolest man in the world, our man C
00:04-Mill.
00:05C-Mill, what's up?
00:05How are you, buddy?
00:07Man, I don't know how you follow that up, trying to get somebody whatever you call that drink was.
00:11A bull shot.
00:12I don't know how you follow that up.
00:13Yeah, you know I don't drink V-Mitch, so have one on me.
00:16Don't worry, Mike don't drink two for you.
00:18We'll catch up for you, Chris.
00:20Don't worry about that.
00:21I may have caught up a little too much last night.
00:25Dude, I mean this in the best way, because you are such a professional.
00:29I've said this repeatedly, the way you and Drew handled the end of the Bam Adebayo game was a master
00:35class in broadcasting.
00:36What did it feel like for you when the Wiz got the number one pick?
00:42It's a great question, and I appreciate the compliment, JP.
00:46It was, you know, I've been doing this a long time, and I pour everything into this job, because it's
00:56a dream job for me.
00:57Not being a play-by-play guy in the NBA, it's a dream job to be the play-by-play
01:02guy for the Washington Wizards, because, like me, I got it out of the mud.
01:06And that's kind of like how I want to be a part of a winning team, is getting it out
01:11of the mud.
01:11So, I'm standing, actually, next to a friend of mine off stage when the announcement happened, and I saw, well,
01:21first of all, going to the commercial break, Washington was still in the mix.
01:24So, I was super excited.
01:26Absolutely, dude.
01:27Absolutely.
01:27And then, you know, for that break, which felt like 10 minutes, you know, you just sit there, you're just
01:32waiting, and you see four, you see three, and you're like, come on, man, this is not possible, right?
01:39And just like John, John told me, you know, he peeked to the side, and he saw the purple on
01:46the card, and that's when he knew that Washington won it.
01:49And when I saw the card come up, and I saw purple, I just bent over.
01:55Like, I just bent over, because I just couldn't believe that it happened.
01:59And, you know, I thought of a lot of people when that happened, and Walter Wiggins was the first person
02:09I thought about who passed away this time last year.
02:13Pump him up.
02:14Everybody knows him as pump him up.
02:15Yeah, yeah, yeah.
02:15Go to Commander's game.
02:16Yeah, yeah.
02:17Maryland, you know, but he was always somebody when I was doing sideline that I would always have just a
02:24little time with before a game or during a game.
02:27And no matter if they won or lost, that man was in the building showing love.
02:32So he was kind of the first person I thought of.
02:35And then, you know, I've had experiences in the past, you know, when the Cavs got LeBron, I was there.
02:41Obviously, in 2010, when the Wizards won the lottery, I got John Wall.
02:45So I've had experience with this.
02:47And it just changes everything.
02:50And you're noticing it now, guys.
02:52Like, I just, I'm consuming all of this content.
02:56People are talking about the Wizards in a way that they haven't talked about in a long time.
03:02And it just feels good.
03:04And it's like, locally, I hear you guys talking, you know, Kevin Sheens, the Junkies, you know, shout out to
03:10them for 30 years.
03:11Because everyone's talking about the Wizards in a way where it just feels good.
03:16And it's almost like we deserved it.
03:20I know the other 29 teams feel like they should have won a lot.
03:22But we deserved it.
03:24So that's kind of how I was feeling.
03:26Dude, I'm with you.
03:27It was like, I'm thrilled with Trey Jobson.
03:31But they kind of got kicked in the gut last year.
03:33You know what I mean?
03:34To slide backwards.
03:35And there were a lot of people that were like, it's going to happen again.
03:38They're going to get kicked in the gut again.
03:40And it didn't happen.
03:40And it felt rewarding.
03:42I don't know.
03:43I don't want to put you in a bad spot.
03:45And I know I was watching the clip of you and Chase on Instagram with Drew.
03:50And I know you're high on Caleb Wilson.
03:51I don't think you want him to go one.
03:55Do you have a pick at one?
03:57Is there somebody you want more than anybody else?
04:00I mean, listen, I'm only speaking for myself.
04:04It's A.J. DeBonta for me.
04:06And it was for pretty much the whole season by just watching his body of work.
04:11And then it just revealed itself more and more the last couple of weeks.
04:16And, Brian, don't laugh because you know how I am about this.
04:20But something as small as he showed up in Chicago to meet the media in a suit.
04:26Like, it's something as little as that going to a job interview that just verified.
04:32And I told Chase this, and I've said it to my friends.
04:35It's like, this young man was going to a job interview.
04:38And I'm sorry.
04:39In 2026, if you're going for a job interview, dress for the job you want, not the job you have.
04:46And that was a separator.
04:47And then his metrics came out, and he blew the roof off of all of his measurables.
04:5542-inch vertical, 8 feet, 10-inch standing.
04:58You know, everything about what I thought I saw throughout the years, it was just validated in Chicago.
05:04So, the thing about, like, when you, they talk about the trading back and possibly doing that thing.
05:14Do you think that would be of any value if they decided to go that way?
05:19Let me just say this.
05:21The people that are in charge of making the basketball decisions for the Washington Wizards today
05:27are some of the smartest basketball minds in the league.
05:31And that's not hyperbole.
05:33You know, I don't shower compliments.
05:36But I've seen the work that Winger and Dawkins and the front office does on a daily.
05:43And I see how they have changed the culture and the perception of this team brick by brick.
05:50So, when Winger said that, he essentially is telling people, listen, we're open for business.
05:55If you have an offer, we'll listen.
05:58Would I be surprised if they moved down?
06:02No, because these are really smart people.
06:05They definitely know way more than me.
06:07They know more than really everybody else that's analyzing this because they've done the work.
06:11So, I wouldn't be surprised if they did it.
06:14But you've worked three years to get this opportunity to get the number one pick.
06:19And if they feel like AJ is the guy, they're going to pick him in June.
06:24If it's Darren Peterson or somebody else, they're going to pick that player because they feel like that's the best
06:30player for this team right now.
06:33Hey, Chris, we had this debate.
06:34We're talking with our friend Chris Miller, Monumental Sports Network, voice of the Wizards.
06:38We had this debate the other day, and I'm not going to tell you where we all landed.
06:41Who would you say is the face of the NBA right now?
06:46Victor Wimbanyama.
06:47And I don't even think it's close.
06:48Another vote for Wemby.
06:50Wemby is the answer.
06:52I don't think he's a face at this point, Chris.
06:55I think you've got to go a little farther than the face.
06:57D-Mitch, it's as simple as this for me.
07:00Victor Wimbanyama is the perfect combination of a 20-26 basketball player that is highly skilled,
07:08but he has the mentality of an 80s basketball player.
07:13His competitiveness is old school, and he has a new school game.
07:20He blends it all together.
07:21And when I really looked at him the first time, I was amazed at the size, obviously.
07:28But during the All-Star game this year, he was the one that set the tone for enough of this
07:36BS of just running up and down,
07:38just throwing the ball off the backboard, shooting from half court,
07:40all this nonsense that made the All-Star game for years unwatchable.
07:45He said, no, we're going to go compete.
07:48One of the youngest kids in the All-Star game.
07:50And what happened?
07:51Everybody started leveling up their play.
07:54And then this guy doesn't like Chet Holmgren.
07:57I love that.
07:58I don't like him.
07:59So when they compete against each other, he's going after him.
08:03To me, that's like, okay, it's refreshing that in 20-26, there is a competitive person out here that doesn't
08:11like his opponent,
08:12but he's super skilled, and he's taller than everybody else.
08:15To me, he moves the needle.
08:17He's got the Q rating.
08:19Even being in a small market in San Antonio, everybody on the planet knows who Victor Wimbanyama is.
08:26Absolutely.
08:27What is your pick kind of down the stretch here?
08:29The Knicks look great.
08:31This first Thunder Series is going to be great.
08:32Who do you have winning it all?
08:35Man, OKC showed championship medal coming back in game two.
08:38It showed some great.
08:38So I think it's going to be a long series.
08:41There are a couple of injuries on both teams that concern me.
08:44So the depth, we're going to just see how deep OKC is.
08:48I think they have the most-
08:50They are deep.
08:51You know, A.J. Mitchell, what they were able to get for A.J. Mitchell, he's amazing.
08:58You see what the man's last name is, Chris.
09:01Well, you know, listen, you can't go wrong with a Mitchell, right?
09:04You should have known right there.
09:05I'm going to take the Spurs.
09:09If they can get Dylan Harper back and if De'Aaron Fox can just give them something, I'm going
09:15to give the Spurs the edge because they beat OKC more than any other team did in the regular
09:20season.
09:21So I think they have the secret sauce.
09:234-1 against them in regular season.
09:25Yeah.
09:26In the East, I think it's the Knicks.
09:27I don't know if it's in four or it's in five, but I'm still happy for Josh Hart, the kid
09:32from Silver Spring, went off last night for 26.
09:34So I'm always happy to see the local guy.
09:37So I'm going to say Knicks, Spurs, and I think Wimby's going to get that chip.
09:43I do too, man.
09:44Like, B. Mitch's claim is that he's not the face yet.
09:48When he holds that Larry O'Brien in three weeks, then he is.
09:51You know what I mean?
09:52Well, the scary thing is if he doesn't get it this year, he's going to get it eventually.
10:00Right?
10:00And I think the league is really kind of on notice of what he is.
10:05He doesn't know how to fall.
10:07Stop falling on your face.
10:08Yeah, I'm kind of worried about that, man.
10:09There's a lot of timber when it comes to him, right, B?
10:12A lot of timber.
10:13A lot of timber.
10:14Hey, Chris, you're the absolute best.
10:16Thank you for making time for us, dude.
10:18Always love and respect, guys.
10:20Enjoy your weekend.
10:21And B. Mitch, do not fall asleep driving back home.
10:25I know you as a joke on JP.
10:26I heard you before.
10:27JP can sleep anywhere.
10:29But if B, if you're driving, make sure he gets home.
10:31Oh, no.
10:32I don't sleep when I'm driving.
10:33I'm rolling.
10:34But for the record, B. Mitch can sleep anywhere.
10:37We were at a very fancy dinner in Beverly Hills, California, a place called Spago.
10:41People have heard of it.
10:41And Brian was asleep at the table.
10:43Yeah.
10:43So B can sleep anywhere.
10:45I can sleep anywhere.
10:46It wasn't loud in there.
10:49Or, Chris, you'll like this.
10:51I don't know that we've said this on air.
10:52B went to the bathroom, found Paul Pierce at the bar, and they did a bunch of tequila shots.
10:57And when he came back to the table, he was spent.
11:00He needed a quick nap.
11:01I took a nap.
11:01Yeah, yeah, yeah.
11:02Yeah, that really was.
11:03Oh, I got to hear that one.
11:04I got to hear that story offline because I know he can put it down.
11:08Oh, yeah.
11:08Yeah, indeed.
11:09There's a reason he walks to work.
11:11That's all I'm going to say.
11:11That's all I'm going to say.
