Chris Miles joins the program to recap the Wizards season and preview the prospects they could draft in the first round.
Transcript
00:00All right, the Wizards rolling into the station
00:02with a very successful tanking season.
00:05How would you rate it for what they have executed?
00:11I mean, it's funny because I wish they would have done this this season
00:15to get Wimby, right?
00:17Like, that would have been crazy.
00:20But, you know, 8, 9 out of 10, right?
00:22Like, you're right there in the mix.
00:24I just got to see the lottery.
00:26If the Wizards end up with the number one pick,
00:28then we give them the 10 out of 10, right?
00:30If they end up at 5 or 6 again, it's like, all right, enough of this.
00:34If they end up at 5 or 6, that means the league's screwing.
00:37Okay, here's –
00:38All right.
00:56Yeah.
00:57So here's the question I have.
00:58What is the disaster line for the lottery?
01:01Is it three?
01:02Is it four?
01:04Is it – like, what number ball would be a disaster if the Wizards pull it?
01:10You said five, right?
01:12So is top four okay?
01:15I look at the top four players as being equal.
01:18Who are they, by the way?
01:19Like, the – well, I mean, for me –
01:22In your mind.
01:23And some people, like, there's, you know, Darren Peterson, A.J. DeBansa, Cam Boozer, and Caleb Wilson.
01:30Caleb earned that right for me to put him there, right?
01:33I look at those four guys as, like, I don't know who's going to be the best one,
01:38and I don't know who's going to be the worst one, and I think it depends on their situation.
01:43Yeah.
01:44Do you see what I mean?
01:45So, like, if Cam Boozer goes to the Pacers, we may look at this kid as being the best one
01:50from this class.
01:51But if he goes to the Kings, we may look at him as being the worst in that group.
01:55Do you see – I mean, of the four players.
01:56So, for the Wizards, it's like, who cares if you're one or four?
02:01You get one of those guys, you're cooking with fish grease.
02:04Any one of them.
02:05Okay.
02:06But I think once you get to five, now you can make a mistake.
02:10Because you could draft – like, you just traded for Trey Young.
02:13So, what, are you going to draft?
02:14Darius Acuff?
02:15Right, like, he's the guy that should be sitting there.
02:17Not ideal.
02:18Or, like, there's too many question marks.
02:21Once you get to five, I'm like, I don't like it.
02:24I don't like it.
02:25Keaton Wogler would not – how would that play at five?
02:28Look, this is what I'm saying.
02:30You get into a whole different – what you're doing is I don't want that for the Wizards.
02:35Yeah.
02:35The Kings need that.
02:36The Kings need that in their lives.
02:37For the Wizards, it's been enough heartache and pain.
02:40It's been enough, you know, sitting there.
02:42No offense to Johnny Davis at 10.
02:45No offense to which my guy that they traded, Corey Kispert.
02:49Like, I don't know.
02:50We don't want any more of that.
02:52We're done with that.
02:52Give them a bona fide John Wall or at least, like, Bradley Beal-level, like, all-star, you know, potential
03:01superstar in the NBA.
03:02Because I don't know about you guys.
03:03I view John Wall as the superstar.
03:05I view Bradley Beal as an all-star.
03:08That's what you need.
03:09You need one of those guys.
03:10Like, a perennial all-star or a potential superstar in the NBA.
03:14Okay, so if it's 1-1, your pick, your preferred pick, Chris Miles, is?
03:21I'm biased.
03:22Just like I was biased with Giannis.
03:25You know, I'm a Darren Peterson slash Cam Boozer camp person.
03:30So I'm looking at the Wizards as they're currently constructed.
03:35Like, the Wizards are interesting because, like, I like all the players that they have now who haven't developed into
03:40it.
03:41But, man, give me a Darren Peterson or I wouldn't take Caleb one.
03:47I would take Darren Peterson one.
03:48And I know that's not popular, and I don't think the Wizards would do that.
03:51Okay, so.
03:51But I think the best fit for the Wizards is Caleb.
03:54What's the knock on Peterson over it?
03:56He doesn't seem to want to always go.
03:59Look, man, I don't know what people talk about.
04:01First of all, I've heard that, and I remember the first time I had the privilege of going into a
04:06gym.
04:07I heard about him when he was a sophomore in high school.
04:10And this is what I'm trying to tell you, B-Mitch.
04:11You know I'll give you the real.
04:13Okay?
04:14Sam Mitchell, NBA Coach of the Year, calls me up.
04:18Chris, Chris Miles, man, let me tell you.
04:20I've got these kids in the gym.
04:22I'm coaching them for Team Adidas and for getting them ready for USA.
04:25I need you to come and see this kid in the gym right now.
04:28So I'm going.
04:29And it's Darren Peterson, but I don't know who this kid is yet, right?
04:33And he's telling me, I got the best player from this class.
04:52Like, this is how incredible of a talented kid is.
04:56When I see the cramps and stuff, I'm like, guess what you didn't hear?
05:00You didn't hear him complaining.
05:02All these grown men saying he's not this, he's not that, and he's like, hey, I'm just
05:06going out trying to win.
05:07I'm trying to get my body right.
05:09Clearly, there's something going on with him physically, right, where he's coming out
05:13of games, and they're like, oh, he tapped the coach to come out of the game.
05:16I'm like, did you watch the footage?
05:18Because he's standing there, clearly can't move, hits the jumper, and is like, coach,
05:22I can't move.
05:24And then the rest of the season, he finishes the games.
05:28I would label that player as a tough-minded individual with something going on with him
05:33physically.
05:34Now, do you want to deal with that, right?
05:37You got to find out what's going on with him, though.
05:40And as NBA players have told me, and Greg Anthony, for one, is a guy that I called on this.
05:46He's like, look, Chris, when they get this man into the NBA, they're going to do the little
05:50test where they test your blood, and they're going to figure out what's wrong with him.
05:53They're going to tell him, you're allowed to eat this, this, and that, and you need to
05:56stay on this program, and that thing's going to go away.
05:59Now, it's up to him, if he's that disciplined, to make that go away.
06:03And I was like, oh, okay.
06:04He's like, I'm drafting him first.
06:07I'm taking a kid that's probably going to average 30 a game and is the most elite guard
06:12prospect, as far as talent is concerned, we've seen in 25 years.
06:16So that's my take on it.
06:18But A.J.
06:19DeBansa came in and just did it, right?
06:21And he's 6'9", and he's strong.
06:24So it's like, but Darren Peterson cooked A.J.
06:28DeBansa.
06:29Yes, he did.
06:29And he cooked him, you know, three times in high school and did it again in college with
06:33his body apparently not being right.
06:35So, like, this is what I mean.
06:38This is a good problem.
06:39So if you have one, these are things you have to factor in.
06:42Plus, A.J. is Jamaican.
06:43So he's my country man, my fellow country man.
06:46I'm going to say, you know, I'd love for him to play for the Wizards.
06:49All right.
06:50Do you have any preference on the three proposed sort of tanking fixes or lottery tweaks?
06:57No, I don't like any of those, but something needs to be done.
07:02And the one thing that I do see...
07:03Why don't you like any of them?
07:05I don't like them.
07:06I don't think they fixed the problem.
07:08Are they too complicated?
07:08I think they're too convoluted.
07:10Yeah.
07:10There's for fans.
07:11And the thing is, the lottery is for the fans.
07:13The lottery is for the fans.
07:15If you want to fix the problem, then you just, you know, okay, here's the records.
07:19And if you really, really, really just want to fix it and not make it a fan thing, all
07:24right, the team's vying for the playing spot.
07:27If you, you know, when you're in 7, 8, 9, and 10, if you beat out the other teams that
07:32are 9 and 10, all right, you get the top three picks, right?
07:39So, like, the teams that are fighting, like, I would say it was like the Hawks and the Bulls
07:44last year or whatever it is this year.
07:46I'd have to, like, really look at the standings again, right?
07:49But it's like the Hawks and the 76ers.
07:52Whatever team fights and gets that seventh spot, then you get a higher draft pick.
07:59And then if you're in the 10th spot, it gets lower.
08:02Do you see what I mean?
08:02So, now teams are fighting to win at the end of the regular season.
08:05Now the GMs are putting pressure on the coaching staff instead of trying to lose games.
08:11Because right now, that's what's happening, right?
08:13The front office is like, hey, we need to get one of these elite kids that we just discussed.
08:18And then the coaching staff is executing that.
08:21And it's tearing down the team morale.
08:25It's hurting the development of players.
08:28All of these things are going wrong because of this at the top.
08:32I think if you fix it at the top, then everything works out.
