00:48you're a busy man you cover the wizards and the wizards have the number one overall pick
00:53what do you think mike wingers will dawkins where's their head right now
01:00i think they know what they're going to do they're just not going to tell anyone
01:05um i think they understand that holding on to that information would potentially have benefits
01:12and no real drawbacks um you know to holding on to it i think it's possible maybe they're trying
01:18to extract value in a trade but i think the most likely scenario is they know what they're going to
01:23do they just um are keeping that close to the the chest um and you know it's it's an unusual
01:30if
01:30there's anyone out there who's wondering like is this is this common it isn't uh usually we know who
01:35the number one pick is going to me probably by the end of the combine in most years oftentimes
01:40on lottery night you know and then pretty often you know by like the end of november and the
01:46college season but this is an unusual year where there's a lot of really good options at the top
01:50uh very little separating them and so i think the wizards took their time but i have to think they've
01:55made the decision they're just not going to share it all right when it comes to guys who are 1a

02:01when it's close what usually wins in today's nba in the end like if it's going to be debansta
02:11it does the extra notch of athleticism that he showed with some of his dunks and explosiveness
02:18does that win what wins in a tie chase i think it would be intangibles who they believe loves the
02:28game the most is going to work the hardest and is most likely to reach their potential you know
02:33will dawkins their gm soon after his introductory press conference in 2023 said something that i've
02:41always come back to which is a lot of guys basically everyone for the most part who's
02:45picked at the top of the draft or throughout the first round they all have the same starting point
02:49and what's happened it's what happens after that with player development and they take a long view
02:55look at this where you know they don't believe that guys reach their peak until seven eight nine years
03:00down the road so they're doing tons of background research i mean i know chris miles was on your show
03:06recently talking about being in an aau showcase and hearing from people that the wizards were
03:11checking in on guys like that's what they're trying to find out is who's who's going to maximize their
03:17potential with their love for the game and their competitiveness and i think that becomes a real
03:22separator in the top 10 of the league like there's a lot of guys with a lot of talent there's
03:27a lot of
03:27guys that love the game but i think it's the ones who truly hate to lose that end up being
03:32you know
03:32the separators in the top five top 10 of the league the guys who compete for mvps i think to
03:37get to
03:37that level you really have to love the game because obviously you know a lot's going to be thrown your
03:42way not just pressure but you know they make huge contracts and that can breed complacency so they're
03:48trying to find the guy who will work hard and love the game no matter what kind of trappings come
03:54his way
03:56you did a deep dive analytically into kind of all the guys you think are are possible at number one
04:02what did you learn about all these guys
04:08well uh the scoring obviously stands out for all the guys at the top so i think it kind of
04:13goes beyond
04:13that and for aj debonta it's the passing he was one of the best players in the country at generating
04:20assists on corner threes i think that's a really cool aspect of his game and something that i
04:25you know jumped off the screen when i was watching him he was really good at getting into the paint
04:29and then finding his teammates on the perimeter so to see that backed up by stats i thought was
04:33very interesting he also um got a lot of assists on not only threes but shots around the rim
04:39and so those are the shots that you're looking for so i think he's a very underrated passer
04:44um for darren peterson it's really the three-point shooting i mean everyone knows he's a shooter but it
04:51just gets even more impressive when you break it down he was like 39 overall but even better from
04:57nba range um he was terrific in transition in half in half court threes so he's just a big time
05:04three-point shooter it kind of reminds me of trey johnson last year and we saw him hit the ground
05:09running as a three-point shooter i think the same thing's going to happen uh when it comes to darren
05:13peterson and then with cam boozer you know he shows up really well across the board even better as a
05:20three-point shooter than darren peterson um but one thing i found really interesting is he gets
05:25knocked for his defense all the time but he has the most steals of all the top prospects beyond the
05:31three-point line so we think of him as this big man this lumbering guy who's 255 260 um but
05:38he can go
05:39out and he can disrupt the offense on the perimeter so i think that bodes well you combine that with
05:44the
05:44defense and he might be an underrated defender how many years do you think it'll take for us to know
05:50who is the best let's say of the three let's put boozer in there i think we'll know soon or
05:57is it
05:57going to take a couple years to let it sort out it'll take a couple years i think it might
06:03take
06:03three four years to really get a good grasp of it i mean it's possible that someone really stands out
06:09as soon as summer league right that happens but you know you got to see it play out over a
06:14few years
06:15and then you know they're probably not going to reach their peak until they're 26 27 28 years old
06:20that's you know the average age of an all nba player is about 27 so you know these guys come
06:26into the league so young um but it takes time for them to learn how to win and that's obviously
06:31the
06:31most important thing like you see like an anthony edwards who has already played enough of his career
06:37to become a household name and he's still only 24 you know a lot of the best players of all
06:41time
06:42didn't break through into the conference finals the finals so they were 26 27 28 like even michael
06:47jordan didn't do that so it's going to take time um and i think it'll be fun to watch whoever

07:15the bonsa at one that doesn't necessarily mean it's the bonsa to the wizards at one how much
07:21if at all do you think a move is possible where maybe the wiz select the bonsa but he ends

07:28somewhere else i'd say that's unlikely i mean it's possible i think it's probably a small percentage
07:36um it just doesn't happen very often where teams trade the the first pick and there's a lot of
07:42different reasons but i think one that maybe fans have overlooked is you usually don't get a lot like
07:49you think like okay you know we're all around for like the rg3 trade you know you're going to get
07:53three first round picks and what have you and like if the wizards got that that would be great but
07:58generally the going rate is another first round pick like when the celtics moved back from one to three
08:04and got jason tatum they got a first round pick that ended up being like 19th overall
08:08uh when the hawks moved back from three to five to get trey young they got a first round pick
08:13that
08:13ended up being 10th overall it was cam reddish and romeo langford were the players so you could
08:20really second guess that if you move back you get say the 11th pick and you get a good player
08:25but the
08:26guy who went in the spot that you were in is even better it just kind of adds to the
08:30risk i think if
08:31the wizards got more than you know a late lottery pick then obviously they'd have to consider that
08:37offer and you know that would be a win in and of itself but i think the expectation for what
08:43you
08:43would get in a trade back probably needs to be kept in check and when you look at it through
08:47that lens
08:48and then you think about okay well very often the best player in a draft when you look back
08:54is significantly better than the second best player even when it doesn't seem like that at first glance
08:59it's just a very risky proposition one that they have to consider but it there's reasons why it's
09:05rare can i get can i put a quarter into the chase hughes jukebox on the totality of the trey
09:12young
09:13opt-out and whether you were surprised not surprised mildly so and where you see this going
09:22sure i would say i wasn't surprised at all um because the expectation when he arrived was that
09:29they would try to negotiate the new deal and that was a necessary step to do that you know so
09:34he has
09:35to opt out in order to get a multi-year contract extension and by all accounts it seems like both
09:42sides are interested in doing that you know they had i think a pretty good partnership down the stretch
09:47last year um he does something that they really desperately needed when they acquired him which is
09:52get into the paint and set things up for others in their offense and i don't think they're going to
09:57find
09:57that very easily either on their roster or in this draft like i think long term both the bonson
10:03peterson could be that guy maybe even boozer could but that's still a need that they would have to fill
10:08if they didn't have trey young so um if he opts out if that becomes official then that would just
10:13be
10:14step one towards them negotiating a new contract so i hear you and i understand that but the report
10:22from shams this morning is that yannis is either going to miami or boston and we've heard the
10:28reporting that miami's interested in trey if they don't get yannis there's there's zero to stop
10:35trey necessarily maybe just going and signing with the heat right
10:41he could walk in free agents if he wants to yeah um but i'd have to you know look into
10:46the salary cap and
10:48what the destinations would look like how much money could he make compared to what he could make
10:51in washington um it seemed like he really liked it here down the stretch yeah um he fits in really
10:58well with their offense you know we've discussed how far he goes back with their gm will dawkin so
11:02i i think all signs point in the direction of him playing for the wizards next year
11:07but certainly that is a possibility that's got to be acknowledged well what about ad
11:15well i thought what uh michael winger told you was very interesting in your interview with nbc4 that
11:22you know he's received strong signs that ad wants to be here next year and we've had that that clue
11:29we've
11:29also had anthony davis wearing wizards gear in instagram stories i don't know um if that holds up to
11:36michael winger's own words but and then you know they got the number one pick after he kind of had
11:40left
11:40the door open about the future and he wanted to see the plan i think that helps solidify the plan
11:46so i also expect him to play for the wizards next year and i have to say i feel um
11:50more confident
11:51saying that after hearing what michael winger told you yeah he said that the interactions with ad
11:58you're going to hear that at one o'clock my conversation with michael winger but he said
12:00they've been delightful which i thought was such a delightful interesting word what are they dating
12:07um chase i know you a long time i know you well you tend to cut against the grain it
12:15seems like
12:16the people have landed on the bonsa's number one pick if you were the gm who would you pick
12:24i think the bonsa's got a really strong case man um you know i think if i were to cut
12:31against the
12:31grain maybe at certain points of the season it would have involved the bonsa and specific to him
12:37um i'm a believer in his three-point shooting i see everyone online being like why would you take
12:43this guy he can't shoot it's like what are you talking about he can't shoot he shot 33 from three
12:47last year that's not terrible like he's not a bad shooter he was great from all around the court you
12:54know from around the rim the mid-range the three-point shot what happened is he started slow and he
12:59ended
12:59slow if you look at his numbers from late december to late february when conference play began he had
13:06a 17 game stretch where he shot 39 from three on five attempts a game that was the meat of
13:11the
13:11schedule right he's going up against other big 12 teams he shot 42 from three in transition i think
13:18he is going to be a fine shooter at the next level and going back to stuff that will dawkins
13:23has said
13:23before he said something really interesting about a year ago about teaching players how to shoot he said
13:28you can shoot you can teach a bad shooter to be good you could teach a good shooter to be
13:32great you
13:33can't teach a bad shooter to be great i would say that debonsa is a good shooter not a bad
13:39shooter so
13:40i think you take his starting point i think you can get him to become a very good three-point
13:45shooter
13:45maybe not great i always stop short of using the word great because you got to leave room for
13:49the true greats and whatever they're doing but i think he could be a very good three-point shooter
13:54and then if he becomes that well you've got one of the best athletes to enter the draft
13:58in decades legitimately if you look at the combine numbers plus the handle plus the passing um so
14:05that's how i would push back and go against the grain to say that actually aj debonsa is a good
14:10shooter
14:10all right what is the dream lineup that chase hughes is excited to see on the court for the first
14:19time
14:19this coming fall for the wizards give me this give me the five that you'd be like oh here we
14:25go
14:27well i feel very confident about four of them at this point trey young at point guard okay i think
14:34keshawn george is going to be in there regardless he's the best combination of offense and defense
14:40that they have plus he's got the size uh and then alexar and anthony davis so my question is
14:47is if it's aj debonsa he's probably the three keshawn moves to the two but if it's darren peterson he's
14:54probably the two and keshawn moves to the three but basically it comes down to size and physical
15:00defense and the ability to play both on and off the ball keshawn george is i think quite easily their
15:06most versatile young player he's also their oldest young player he's he's the guy who could swing to
15:12either spot and i think complement the rest of the players in that lineup really well so they have
15:20it's hard to say they're loaded when they lost the most games but they have a lot of interesting young
15:27players and it's also hard to know what reports are bogus this time of year but there was a report
15:33that they want to get back into the lottery in this draft do you think they could put bub or
15:39riley or or somebody else on the move over these next 36 hours to get back into top 10 top

15:47one of these michigan bigs i i think you get one of those dudes you really help alexar a lot
15:53um do you think there's a possibility that that happens i want landon born personally but i'm open
15:58a suggestion it's crazy when you say michigan bigs who could go in the lottery you're technically
16:04talking about it's like that's how good michigan was last year coach coach is calling it a day at
16:11michigan and going to the mavericks um but um yeah i mean i think it's possible they have traded back
16:17into the first round each year the lottery's tough though i mean look what they had to do to get
16:23into
16:23the lottery two years ago in a much less heralded draft was give up denny avia who was on a
16:30great
16:30contract and was clearly an ascending player so like if that's what it took to get the 14th pick
16:35two years ago you can imagine what it would take this year with a better draft where you might get
16:41a
16:41guy 14th who would usually go 10th or who in that draft might have gone eight right like the difference
16:46in these drafts is significant so it's that would be really tough um but certainly they'll try i mean
16:52i think it's probably more likely that they get a second first round pick that's like in the 20s
16:57um but you know might as well shoot for it do you are there any trading back up targets you

17:04like at 20 or 22 kind of that will riley zone
17:10i think jayden quaintance is a really interesting player um his range the potential range in the
17:16draft seems like it's really wide he started my attention chase it's a big yeah he is he
17:22is a big man he's very physical he had a torn acl in college so i think that's affected his
17:28stock a
17:29little bit but he's really young he's big he's very strong he forces a ton of turnovers he's not
17:34even uh he's one of these guys who's built like a football player but can jump um so i think
17:39he would
17:39give them something that would complement alex star really well and give them some physicality you know
17:45they they're gonna have to beef up at some point they were the lightest team in the league last year
17:49in
17:49terms of average weight so i like the idea of bringing a guy who's like 270 and can move people
17:55um so that would probably be what i would i would look for if they were to trade back into
18:00the first
18:00round get some physicality all right i i'm on record as wanting landing board but you've got me quite
18:06interested in jayden quaintance i gotta tell you that um dude i'll see you tomorrow you excited to
18:11have me lawyer around absolutely i look forward to it i don't get to see you as often as i
18:17used to
18:18i know jp is looking more forward to a steak dinner than the actual draft the steakhouse better be
18:25good you know it's just cow by the way it's just cow apparently jackson dark can't get in but somehow
